I'm now working on a new version of my Fractint Screen Saver, that some
of You may have seen. And I have a few questions that I hope some of You
can answer.

1.    When running Fractint in disk-video mode. What is the fastest
setting for the PASSES= parameter. My guess is that it is the 1 or 2
passes setting. Are there any circumstanses where I can't use these
settings?

2.    Is there any way to get rid of the warning message that one gets
when trying to generate IFS fractals in disk video mode? I would like to
allow these in my screen saver.

Greetings folks,

For those of you wondering where the contest entries are... I thought I'd
fill you in a little bit. I've gone through all the contest entry
submission mail over the past two months and verified the files for each
entry. I currently have 401 images and animations, amounting to over 76M of
material, in compressed form. This is a few more than Kerry has in his
database, because there were some stragglers that he doesn't have yet.
There are still a few minor changes we need to make before we can pour all
the entries into the web site.

There is a reason we didn't just put everything up right away and then make
corrections later, and that reason is the CD. With this year's contest
being so large (downloadable packs will probably total 80M, twice the size
of last year's) I expect people to be very interested in ordering that CD,
and once it's burned, it becomes very difficult to make changes. :-) So we
want to get it right the first time, and if that means taking a few extra
days to get everything lined up... then I think it's for the best.

Since I don't actually *have* the database yet, I don't have listings of
how many entries are in each category. I'll let you know once I have that
information. I do expect to have the entries online before the end of the
week; right now I'm projecting Thursday evening, possibly *late* Thursday
evening, but it may be Friday. CD-ROM information will be posted at that
time. Downloadable packs will likely take an extra day.

Based upon a recent email from one of the Developers, there is a
"proposed Xfractint" that is "is still pretty rough".  But they "are
inches from releasing a new version of Fractint.  The only reason it
isn't released now is that" two individuals involved "have requested
time to make some evolver and sound demos."

There will be an announcement in this Discussion List, so look for it in
the near future.

I downloaded frain196.zip at college and unzipped in a NT machine. It worked
fine, except for teh video modes. In that machine I had only permissiona to
save files in the temp directory.

As Paul quoted me, I called this "rough", although it is cleaner than
past Xfractint packages. I am not too pleased with the Makefile,

reasonable SRCDIR and BINDIIR locations?


Also, we are putting all of Wizzle's maps in this release. For
Xfractint, I just dumped them all into the release package. I should
probably do something more elegant. For the DOS package, right
now

put them in a text file to be placed in the distribution?

I think Fractint, at 1024 x 768 only supports up to 256 colors (.gif). Try
resetting to that and see if that works.

Umm... fractint has extremely limited support for anything other than
8bit pallette-based image output.  All of fractint's video output is
built around <= 8bit deep displays.  This assumption permeates all of
the fractint code.  16/24/32 bit deep displays (64K/16.7M colors) just
weren't around when fractint's video code was written.  The developers
of fractint are working on changing this situation, but its slow
going because of the amount of code that needs to be changed.

Also, in 16/24/32 bit video mode there is no longer any colormap to
modify, so there is no way to change the colors the way fractint knows
how to change them (modifying the colormap).  The only "truecolor
support" in support in fractint is the ability to write out the
iteration value to a targa file called iterates.tga.  You enable this
with the truecolor=yes option.

I'd appreciate confirmation from a few of the early downloaders that
the integrity of the package looks OK.

The best way to get into the new features is to run the evolver and
sound demos. These are accessible from demp.bat run in a clean
directory with all the distribution files.

The Xfractint release needs a day or two to finish, however the file
tw04.zip at my ftp site is nearly complete. It just needs the
help?.src files updated from the DOS package andf some Makefile
cleanup. Please don't upload tw04.zip anywhere since it is not
quite final. The final version will be along very soon.

It's OK to upload frain200.zip and frasr200.zip to other sites, but
prudence might dictating waiting 24 hours or so to see if I screwed
up in any big way putting the package together :-)

True. However the truecolor drivers are implemented, and some
reasonable truecolor support would not be hard to implement, even
within the frustrating confines of the DOS existing medium memory
model architecture. It's just that nobody has jumped in to do it.
We'd probably have to save the files as Targas for know and
convert to PNG offline.

However I think we have a consensus that moving Fractint to a flat
memory model is the highest priority. That's were I will focus my
efforts, although I have a steep learning curve no matter which way
we go. Once we are in a decent platform, we can do a massive
cleanup. Of course Rich knows all about this :-)

Hi, I used this option and found the iterates.tga in my \fractint\temp
directory. Now what can I do with it, since I don┤t even now what *.tga
means...

Oh no !

I just tried V20 (on a Vectra/Windows NT 4.0/Integrated SiS video)
and the first thing I noticed was that I'm not able to get SF5
(640x480x256) anymore !!! It says "This video mode is not available
with your adapter", but it worked on v19.6 !

A little conspiracy theory is in order. Since this happens on the
PC at my work, I'll be forced to do medium and high-res Fractint
only at home. Maybe my boss asked for this on the wish list ...

BTW, the new features look awesome in the help file, I can't wait
to get home to try them...

If you don't have any programming knowledge, then it won't do you any
good.  See the help file where it states that truecolor=yes writes the
last iterate out to an iterates.tga file and then it directs you to
consult a C code source file in the distribution that will show you
how to write a program to read the iterates.tga file and then do
something with it.  In other words: this truecolor=yes feature is for
expert programmer types, not the typical user.

 - prudence might dictating waiting 24 hours or so to see if I screwed

For recent newcomers to Fractint (aka ME), the Evolver feature is a real
timesaver,

I am surprised that anything about 20.0 would have different video
performance from 19.6, but anything is possible, especially under
NT.

I doubt this will help you, but might be of general interest. Version
20.0 comes with a program called makefcfg.exe that reads your
VESA Video BIOS and writes a fractint.cfg file. I suggest you try
this and tell us what modes are produced.

This is a quick way to see what video modes fractint supports -
better try this in the store before buying a computer :-) It is also a
handy way to get set up for semi-standard VESA modes such as
1600x1200.

So far no show stoppers. There are a few places in the docs that
say the pixel limit is 2048, and  there are a few glitches in the
demo.bat file, so I think we're safe from an immediate release of
a bug fix 20.1 (knock on wood) :-)

The event, which so far isn't scheduled for an actual date, was started
in anger over the discovery that Unisys <http://www.unisys.com> is
making a new effort to extract royalties out of US patent 4,558,302,
commonly known as the LZW compression method.  Created by Terry Welch of
Sperry Corporation in 1983, LZW eventually became Unisys property when
Sperry merged with Burroughs Corporation to form Unisys in 1986.  LZW is
at the heart of the GIF file format.  If you make or store GIF files,
you're using patented LZW formulas -- and Unisys wants money from you.

Of course, this means that GIFs are off-limits to open source users, who
aren't used to paying for licenses.  The League for Programming Freedom
(LPF), which is closely related to the GNU project (LPF was co-founded
by GNU leader Richard Stallman), is trying to fight this kind of
technology hoarding.  And, as a result, you'll see no GIFs on the GNU or
LPF Web sites.

As far as the GIF-using community knew, no terms existed on using the
GIF format until 1995, when CompuServe shocked its community by
revealing its deal with Unisys and spelling out terms by which
developers would pay licensing fees.

But that agreement covered only CompuServe users.  The rest of the
online community was -- and is -- still open to attack.  While
maintaining that users of GIF viewers were safe, Unisys began pursuing
its patent claims against companies whose graphics software was capable
of writing GIF-format files.  To let everyone know it was serious,
Unisys in 1998 went after Corel and was able to get retroactive fees in
an out-of-court settlement.

Unisys now says that it wants a $5,000 license from anyone running a Web
site that contains GIF files made by unlicensed creation software.

I had a minor problem.  When in evolver mode, I invoked the
Ctrl-E command to modify things, and Fractint failed to switch
video mode back to text 320x200.  While accessing both the
first and F6 screens, all text was written over the prior image.
I had to quit and restart to clear the bug.  I was not able to
reproduce the problem.  I was running an AMD 80 Mhz 486DX2,
with MS.DOS v6.22 and a Trident 8900-based ISA video card,
in SF5 mode.

Here's my sstools.ini:

Also, an observation/request/complaint (choose one):
it would seem to be more natural to use the p(n) data for the
