Subject: RE: (fractint) Fractal Art 1999 contest
Hi Tom,
- I am posting this to the list as I have not had any success sending
- mail to the address listed to enter the contest or to dmj's address.
- What's going on?
What's going on is that your messages are being delivered through a server
(mail.netpath.net) which is misconfigured as an open relay and which, if
spammers discover it, can be used by any spammer anywhere to spam
absolutely anyone on the net. For this reason, fractalus.com's mail server
does not accept mail from open relays. Complain to NetPath's sysadmin and
get them to fix their problems.
(There is absolutely no excuse for an open relay in today's Internet, and
the ORBS site, www.orbs.org, does have tips on securing one's server. In
the case of NetPath, it looks like they have a modern mail server program
but with an old buggy config file. Rebuilding their config file for the
current version of sendmail and submitting their site to ORBS as fixed
should permanently fix the problem.)
This is not some personal vendetta directed against you, Tom--just against
people setting up servers incorrectly or deliberately looking the other way
and allowing spam to continue.
As a *temporary* fix, I've lifted the block for mail.netpath.net for my
server only. Anyone else using the ORBS database to block spam will still
block your mail.

To whom any of this may concern;
I'm a beginner in fractals, have a 350mh presario w/ Windows98,
dabbled w/ Winfract, and am currently trying to figure out how
to get frain196(Fractint for DOS) to run.
I have minimal DOS experience, but have been successful running
DOS generators that auto-start. Frain196 and a few other generators
like it remain 'un-openable' for me.
If you can tell me in sub-layman/'duh,duh' hand-held English(even
ebonics)
how to begin running Fractint, I will be most grateful!
Thanks!

I had the same problem and someone suggested that I reboot in DOS. When
I did that and arrived at the DOS screen I was able to get Fractint 19.6
to work without a problem.
Just in case you might not know how, call up the Windows Start Menu
either by clicking on the "Start" button on the lower left-hand side of
your task bar. Alternatively, you can press the "Windows" key (it's the
key with the Windows logo on its face) between the "Ctrl" and "Alt" keys
on either side of the space bar.. This will also bring up the Start
menu. Choose "shut down" on the bottom of the menu and then click
"Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode". Good luck and enjoy Fractint.
The DOS version is much better than Winfract.

Did you unzip the file? If I remember correctly, frain196 is a
compressed archive file which must be unzipped before it can be run.
The actual Fractint executable file is <fractint.exe>

I unzipped it incorrectly the 1st time around, so I
re-downloaded it, followed your instructions(unzip to Fractint folder
in C directory) and now it auto-runs perfectly when I double-
click it while in Windows98! One question, though. Will I get
deep-zooming ONLY if I restart in MSDOS mode, or can I
still do that while in Windows98?
Anyway...THANKS!!!

You can still get deep zooms while in Windows 98. You may wish to read
the following "tips" for running FractInt under a Windows environment:

You could try this,
If you find the file fractint.exe, with Explorer, right click on it you will
have the chance to set the properties for this executable file i.e.
fractint.exe. By juggling the settings found there, you create a .pif file
(program information file) which then runs the program when you execute it.
I've had no problem since - have fun!
