How does one get xfractint to run without a graphics window so that in can
run in the background and create the images as gifs on disk? Preferably,
the formula and parameters should be in .frm and .par files, and the names
of these files passed as command line parameters to xfractint.
Does anyone have an example that works? Preferably Linux, but Solaris also
OK.

Randall,
Enter: "xfractint -disk" on the command line. xfractint will then use dis=
k
space to create your fractal rather than a video window. The status
display will replace the menu screen. When it completes, press 'Esc',
then 's' to save the image as a gif file.=20
I don't know of a way to run it in the background, though. If you enter
"xfractint -disk &", it doesn't start up in another window. A process id
will appear on the screen, xfractint will be listed when you do 'ps', but
you can't interact with it.
If you are running Linux, you might want to take a look at my page about
xfractint running in Linux/KDE at:
http://www.fastlane.net/~sdboyd/xfractint.html .
I have available a binary of xfractint, and I also have some info and
some tips about running xfractint in Linux.
Good luck,
Scott

Actually, alpha is approx. -2. The one FractInt mentions (4+) is the
delta constant.
Actually, delta = 4.

What's on? No interest in the finite-attractor-bug?
However I'd recommend having a look at

You will see an example for a magnetic julia generatet wit V15.3 and

The a's can be taken to be the centers of the disks in the Mandelbrot set
in the sequence that starts with the main cardioid (center = 0), then the
large circular disk to the left (center = -1), then the smaller, near
circular disk left of that (center ~ -1.28), etc. Or, the a's can be
taken as the branching points in a bifurcation diagram. The two are
equivalent, or at least related.

Subject: (fractint) Difficulty generating Fractals
I have a real puzzle. Up until recently I had no trouble using Fractint
on my Dell Pentium 200mhz machine running Windows95. My 17" monitor was
just great for viewing the color cycles. A few months ago I downloaded
and installed an updated device driver for my Number Nine Reality 332
Accelerator (Windows Driver Version: Hawkeye for S3d v1.33.05a) with 2
megabytes of DRAM and 64 Megs of RAM. Lately, when I load a GIF and
hit "-" or "+" the screen goes crazy! It flips rapidly through a
succession of horizontal stripes which makes the image impossible to
view. Yet when I hit the space key and stop the cycling, I can see that
each moment of the cycle is generating a new image color. My resolution
is 1024 x 768 @ 75hz VESA and 65K colors. The only change I am aware of
is the updated driver.
Does anyone know if the new driver is to blame? Is there a
work-around? Should I look elsewhere in my system for an answer?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try running Fractint in DOS mode. Click the Start button and then Shut Down. Choose
Restart in MS-DOS Mode. Click Yes or OK (whichever you have in the dialog).

Subject: (fractint) naming fractals
Some time ago (actually back in January 1999) some of us had an
interesting discussion about naming fractals.
I took the liberty of quoting from those messages on my new website,
Jacco's Fractal Kitchen. At this website I keep an archive of fractals
that I have send to newsgroup alt.binaries.pictures.fractals as
'Fractals Of The Past' and I also add some pages with hints.
The page about naming fractals has URL
http://www2.crosswinds.net/~jacco/hint2.htm
On this page I carefully removed or scrambled all email addresses and
ICQ numbers. Yet if you have any objection against your message being
quoted, please let me know.
By the way, isn't the Fractint Mailing List having its second birthday
of these days?
Bye!

Thank you very much for your suggestion. It worked perfectly! I should have thought
of it myself, since Fractint is a dos-based program. I am very grateful to you.
I'm still puzzled by the sudden difficulty I had with Fractint under Windows95, but
life is full of mysteries. At least now I can enjoy Fractint as I did before.
