  58. every Unix)   called XFractint which is a bit hard to use (2 windows, one
  59. for image, one for text input.)  Plus you have to run your X-Windows in
  60. 8-bpp mode to avoid the whole image being blue AND you have to use 
  61. command-line options to change the image size and get all 256 colors.  I'm
  62. personally still waiting for the SVGALib version (graphics without having
  63. to start X-Windows) that acts exactly like the DOS version.

  98. graphics window to change the image size.

  104. I'd like that too.  Even an X version that acts a little more like the
  105. DOS version (you know, displaying text and graphics in the same window,
  106. accepting keystrokes in that window, etc.) would be a big improvement.

  115. I *have* tried it.  Fractint 19.5 under DOSEMU 0.66.7 works mostly
  116. fine, but can't color-cycle, and occasionally seems to freeze
  117. temporarily, and sometimes the graphics screen is displayed
  118. incorrectly.  And it's hard to use with the mouse, because the mouse
  119. tends to escape the Fractint window while you're moving.
  120.  
  121. More and more people are going to want to run Fractint in Linux --
  122. there would be more Linux users as MS-Windows users in 2002 if Linux's
  123. current rate of growth were to remain constant -- so we need to find
  124. better ways of doing things.
  125.  
  126. Linux and Fractint have a special kinship; they both share the same
  127. "stone soup" method of development.

  248. My last transmission HAS the dreaded spaces if I get the file via
  249. Communicator, but it didn't when I tested it via Eudora. Blech. This is
  250. the best I can do!! I'm  going to try an upgrade of Communicator tonight
  251. and maybe life will be better.

  280. I'm a bit unsure about your problem, but I've been able to get partobat
  281. to work peachy on 95 and NT using the Disk Video modes.

  423. Upgrades are sometimes nice to do, but try this first:
  424.  
  425. 1.  Under the menu of EDIT, select PREFERENCES.
  426. 2.  Expand the MAIL & GROUPS category and select MESSAGES.
  427. 3.  Now change the number of characters under the section:
  428.     "Wrap long lines at _____ chatracters"
  429.     Make it somewhere around 70.
  430. 4.  Now hit the OK button.

  521. I'm hardly a wizard with xfractint, but I compiled it and got it running
  522. on Solaris 2.5.1.  The only problem I've found is that it doesn't read
  523. or write pars correctly.  If parameters are defaulted in a par, it seems
  524. to put garbage in them.  Similarly, if I write out a par, it likes to
  525. put garbage in the defaulted parameters.  Mostly with the
  526. coordinates/zoom/magnification entries.
  527.  
  528. It only does 640x480 in a window, but it is useful for experimenting
  529. while waiting on compiles, etc.  :-)

  627. I thought that I would send out my first try at some visually pleasing
  628. pars.  Most of them are just explorations into existing formulas, but I
  629. did try my hand at "bastardizing" a formula, with interesting (I think
  630. anyway) results.  I tried to leave in credit in the comments for
  631. formulas, maps, pars, etc. that I started from, but having played with
  632. so many I easily got confused with what was my starting point.  Please
  633. let me know if anyone didn't get credit they should have.
