I agree. Trumand can read fractint formulae and also has small parameter
files.

Subject: (fractint) PNG vs. JPEG
Good evening folks,
I've posted a brief page outlining the merits of JPEG for fractal use. You
can view it here:
http://www.fractalus.com/misc/png-jpeg.htm
Although I don't explicitly state this in the page, the assumption is made
that we're concerned about images for distribution on the net. For
archival purposes, there's no question that PNG is better. I consider that
an entirely different issue.
This example page contains a somewhat large number of graphics, including a
few PNG files for comparison. It will take several minutes to download all
of the graphics, but there's plenty of text to read while you wait. :-)

Subject: AW: (fractint) PNG vs. JPEG
Damien,
I' ve read your article below (png-jpeg.htm) and I have one important
question.
If I use JPEG to compress my GIF files (coming from fractint) en I want
to reuse my images in fractint, what must I do?
I convert my JPEG files back to GIF and read them in fractint?
What is happend in this case with the fractal information (parameters,
formula name, ...) that was stored in the original GIF file? Is it also
"damaged" by the compression algorithm of JPEG or not? In the first
case, you loose the original data of the GIF file so you can't
reconstruct it using other parameters in fractint?
Am I wrong or am I missing something,
Best regards,
Jan

JPEG throws out the extended-GIF information. Keep your original GIFs, or
your pars, for further fractint use...

Subject: Re: AW: (fractint) PNG vs. JPEG
Jan,
- If I use JPEG to compress my GIF files (coming from fractint) en I want
- to reuse my images in fractint, what must I do?
Keep your GIFs, or save the parameters in PAR files, for later
regenerating. I use JPEG for online display, but I keep GIFs and PAR files
both (for redundancy) on my system.
Basically, what Ian said. :-) FractInt throws an extra chunk into the GIF
files it saves that contains the parameter information. If you load a
FractInt GIF into another program, then save it, you've lost the FractInt
information at that point--because the other program assumes the FractInt
data isn't important and it doesn't know what to do with it.
- Is it also "damaged" by the compression algorithm of JPEG or not?
JPEG is lossy, as I explained in the web page. Done properly, the loss is
minimal and well worth the reduction in file size, but even at the lowest
compression settings, there is still some loss. (There is a totally
lossless JPEG, but few apps directly support it.) This means every time
you open a JPEG and save it, you are introducing a little bit of loss. For
web presentation, this isn't an issue, but if you're still editing and
making changes to an image, don't use any form of lossy compression--use
lossless compression or no compression.

My apologies to anyone who's been to the above address looking for chebyshev
v1.0, I've only just put the page up this evening.
As well as Morgan's "chbyshev.zip" you will now find about a dozen images made
from this collection, plus a 35-image parameter file.
cheers, Les

Actually.....
Having been PNG'd thru several messages to get to this point.....a question
occurs to me. If we CAN convert to PNG as entrants, should we?? Should we do
duel entries.....native format and resampled?
Yours.....more confused than ever

Kathy...
psp 4.0 does a fine job........do your anti-aliasing via resampling at the
highest possible setting. You should get nice results going from 1024 x 768 to
640 x 480.

Morgan...
I have been nagging poor Gedeon mercilessliy about the Chebysev formulas and
when they would be available. Thank you for putting the poor guy out of his
misery!!!! I downloaded my set from his web pages the minute he let me know you
were releasing them. I haven't had time to play yet, but will most likely
immerse myself in their possibilities as part of the contest.
Any secret hints?? <<send those to me off line-----will you consider a bribe?>>

p.s. thanks again

Jan..
You are right on. In fact....if you tamper in ANY way with your original
Fractint GIF, you lose all of the associated information. So.....keep the
original if you want to open it in the future in Fractint to further zoom,
change parameters, colors, etc. Even reducing the size of a Fractint GIF or
adding one's name to the GIF will produce a useless file for further
Fractinting. I learned this much to my consternation with one of my favorite
images......sigh.
Now I save ALL my Fractint GIFs.....as is.....on zip disk.

To obtain the complete set of formuale, Les and Gedeon
have both offered space on their web pages, respectively at
http://www.geocities.com/~gedeonp/index.html
and
http://www.homeusers.prestel.co.uk/crosstrees/fractasi.htm
or of course by emailing me (not the list).
