Subject: (fractint) to attach or not to attach . . .
Hi! Just got back online after a couple of weeks vacationing with my
brother. I'm trying to catch up, but it may take awhile!
However, I see all the postings regarding inline text vs. attachments.
This is another one of those issues that has been done to death. The
past discussions can, of course, be read in the archived files, if
anyone is really interested in the endless exchange and how we got where
we are. But I've included the final-result-message below.
Basically, the discussions broke down to:
inline text is more convenient for some subscribers
vs
attachments are downright impossible for some subscribers.
Given those two issues, it is fairly obvious that inline text is in and
attachments are out. Impossible overrides inconvenient every time!
(PS At one point some of us were including par and frm files as BOTH
attachments and inline text. That didn't work, because some of the
subscribers use software that will automatically dump a message if there
is an attachment. As Noel Giffen put it (28 Oct 1997), "Let's remember
that the intention was to post formula and parameter sets that people
can use. ")

Ok, I think the mail/html/attachment thread has run it's course. I
don't mind this topic in moderation as it can be helpful to list
readers. If folks want to continue this, just respond to the
individual rather than to the list.
Looks like the consensus is to avoid attachments and HTML in list
messages. If everyone is careful with their mailer settings (wide
enough margin, something like 75 characters or so), both sending and
receiving, it should be possible to avoid scrambling PAR entries.

Actually I didn't realize that I was sending an attachment. Most of my mail
is sent HTML enriched, but I posted my par file as Plain text. I didn't know
that Outlook 98 added the html anyway. I'm glad I found out. :)

Since I haven't sunk my teeth into 98, yet (NT rules, for the most part <g>),
I will forward my experience of this in Windoze95.
Simpler than you think, it's simply the dos-level support files (or the entire
\COMMAND\ dir, if you will). With a little foreknowledge, or at least plenty
of time to experiment, you can strip this down to a handful of files. The Win
95 kernel and command.com, plus some memory-handlers and runtimes. That's it.
a 'sys' at the command prompt will indeed return a Windows 95 build.

Yep, rubbish. all of those solutions: F8; restart in DOS; even fixing win95 to
not boot the GUI at startup all work just fine with fractint.
But WHY?!? Fractint runs *beautifully* fullscreen in win95. I just have a
shortcut (with screensaver disabled) on my desktop. The only complications happen
when switching back and forth - the current image is trashed. As long as you save
yr work before swiching all's good. I thought this is how all win95-ers are doing
it...
Am I the exception here? Do all of you have to reboot just to run fractint?
I had to reboot for some of my older DOS games when I first got win95 (Krondor,
DOTT, etc.) but by now I've even got those working within windows (memory and
sound card issues.)

No, you are not! I also found that to be the best way to run Fractint. Simple and
easy. No rebooting, no DOS prompt, no typing of DOS commands! Just a click on a
shortcut. Now it may be marginally slower, but the difference, for me, is negligible.

hi,
I prefer the solidity of fractint in dos. It runs in 95 but not as well for
me.
Rebooting is no problem. I want to run it in dos.

I know. But i dislike the idea of a one GB fat (may well be exaggerated,
don't know exact figures). Let's say four fat16s of a bit less than 2GB (so
clusters of 32KB) might then save some space, not?
I myself have the opposite, which is really wrong. I have
/dev/hda1 (C) 102MB - Dos6, dos7, 4dos, dos71, win311fw
/dev/hda2 ext
/dev/hda3 (J) 747MB - WinNT + apps
/dev/hda4 (K) 310MB - Games
/dev/hda5 (D) 499MB - Win95 + graphics
/dev/hda6 (E) 401MB - Games
/dev/hda7 (F) 377MB - Personal
/dev/hdd2 ext
/dev/hdd5 (G) 149MB
/dev/hdd6 (H) 6MB
/dev/hdd7 (I) 6MB
The reason for the stupid hdd2 is that my 2.5 GB Quantum Bigfoot crashed
some time ago [so i lost linux]. Shaking it and throwing it out of the
window actually seemed to help, but when the motor finally broke down, my
sledge hammer finished it off. I took an old Seagate to replace it, for i
don't want to reinstall WinNT (on J) yet.

Simple really. I've copied the windows\command directory to c:\dos71 along
with smartdrv.exe. And then copied io.sys and msdos.sys.

I sure have ICQ. In May there was something going on about fractal chatting
on IRC and ICQ. So Felix aka Xilef set up an ICQ Group (see below)
This is the list of ICQ members of this list, last updatet Sunday May 3rd,
14:19 GMT+1 (CET).
- ---
A number of members have posted their ICQ numbers / nicknames on this list
in the last couple of days. I've put them on this list for clarity reasons.
If you're not a member of ICQ yet, and are interested in becoming one, visit
http://www.mirabilis.com, where you can download the software. After having
installed the software, follow the instructions in the program to be
assigned an ICQ number.
Felix aka Xilef has opened the ICQ Fractint Interest Group. This group can
be contacted at
http://groups.icq.com/group.asp?no=28214
This list was last updated Sunday May 3rd, 14:19 GMT+1 (CET).
Added Luis Ricardo Costa & Thaddaeus Parker. Welcome.
Michael Bell - #11379737 - 'Mike' on ICQ Fractint Group
Luis Ricardo Costa - #4111347 - 'Spielberg' on ICQ Fractint Group

Christian Strik - #11760568 - 'Meltdown' on ICQ Fractint Group
Angela Wilczynski (Wizzle) - #503044 / #1205072
I selected names and numbers by looking at mail subjects. I'm not suggesting
this list is complete...
Any members on ICQ, who haven't mailed their #s yet, or haven't been listed
here (my fault then), please mail. You can also mail if you're a new member
of the ICQ Fractint Group (see above). This saves me some time finding out
names and numbers. :-)
Thanx in advance,

Won't run on ours. It and W95 happily corrupt and crash
each other (fighting over the display). Other Fractint
experts have confirmed that the problem is the display
adaptor and drivers we use (Diamond Stealth64 Series
2000).
That's OK. Runs beautifully under OS/2, where we spend
much more of our time ...

I run Fractint in a fullscreen session under win95 and it
actually runs 5% -faster- than if I boot from DOS! As
others have reported there is a problem switching (I have a
Diamond Stealth 2000pro).
