Subject: (fractint) ICQ Number list - Rev.4
A number of members have posted their ICQ numbers / nicknames on this list
in the last couple of days. I've put them on this list for clarity reasons.
If you're not a member of ICQ yet, and are interested in becoming one, visit

installed the software, follow the instructions in the program to be
assigned an ICQ number.
Felix aka Xilef has opened the ICQ Fractint Interest Group. This group can
be contacted at http://groups.icq.com/group.asp?no=28214

But some programs still use 32-bit integers to store or retrieve the
free or total space on a hard disk, so it makes sense to keep your
partitions under 2GB, if you don't want to see messages like "2MB needed
to install, -283MB free). :)

Frederik,
- But some programs still use 32-bit integers to store or retrieve the
- free or total space on a hard disk, so it makes sense to keep your
- partitions under 2GB, if you don't want to see messages like "2MB needed
- to install, -283MB free).
Unless you have less than 2G free anyway. :-) Partitioning is really a
kludge. What you want is to be able to use your hard drive to store data,
without having to decide ahead of time how big the various compartments in
it need to be.
The FAT size is bigger for FAT32, yes, so you lose some space there. But
my C drive, which is 1.2G, has 7900 files on it. With FAT16, I'd waste on
average 16K for each file. That works out to be 126 *megs* of wasted
space. With FAT32, each file wastes only 2K on average, resulting in less
than 16M of wasted space. That's a savings of over 100M, and there's no
way the FAT in FAT32 is 100M. :-)
IMO, FAT32 was long overdue. It's not really any less safe than FAT16,
it's more efficient at using hard drive space, so why do people get so hung
up about having a lot of partitions? I think it's because you're *used* to
having partitions, and having one big filing cabinet scares you. :-)

I also have not had any problem running Fractint on Windows 95. No
rebooting necessary. The image is trashed if I try to toggle between
windows, so I don't. It hadn't occurred to me to try until I subscribed
to this list. I like to watch my fractals get born and it seldom takes
so long that I feel I should be occupying myself with another
application.
I think I'll have to start sleeping a lot less to get maximum benefit

Maybe you're right :)
Anyway, i just don't use fat32 cause it isn't compatible with my NT and

Might as well work from the nice, clean XWindows source for this- I don't
think anyone will want the DOS features on a massively-parallel box! I
imagine that our original messager has considerable experience doing
ports to his box; given the source code, he might want to undertake the
project...

Subject: (fractint) Mandelbrot Fleur par
I recently had my access to the internet cut off for 36 hours, so I had
plenty of time to play with Fractint. I was trying to explain to my roommate
WHY I like this program, and why I and others spend hours generating pretty
pictures.
Personally, I do it for Exploration. I love starting with someone else par
and then zooming in/out and moving around just to see what's there. Some
people like to Train Fractals, by making formulas that force the fractals to
do what they want them to do. Others like to Color fractals. Give them a
image and they will find the perfect colors to bring out all the beauty in a
fractal.
I'm sure that most people probably start as Explorers, and then become
either Trainers or Colorers, or maybe even both. Whatever the reason for it,
Fractinters (people who play with fractals) seem to enjoy the long hours of
waiting for glorious beauty to unfold in front of their eyes.
Below is my latest discovery. Based on a par from the May postings of
RParracho.

Same in ext2fs, and it's likely that a lot more Win95 users have Linux
on their disks already than NT. There's a read-only ext2fs driver
for Win95 already; it's not read/write yet.
And, of course, since it's Linux, you can do something about it -- with
NTFS, you're out of luck.

Subject: (fractint) EDN compression article
The June 18th issue of Electronic Design News has a good article on
fractal compression. It is reproduced on the web at:
http://www.ednmag.com/reg/1998/061898/13df_01.cfm
It also has an addendum with some fractint images of mine at:

You may have to register with EDN Access off the home page to see the lat=

Does anybody out there know where I can get a copy of the old Fractal

Subject: (fractint) Improved 4-in-1 Mset Formula
comment {
This formula is an improved version of my Four_Mandels formula.
The improvement is that this version allows passes=t, which can
result in quite a speedup when there are significant areas of
high iteration counts (like baby 'Brots). As in the earlier
version, the images can not be interrupted with any keystrokes
except for possibly the Tab key.
The two pars included are the same (except for a small change
in the colors) as the first two pars included with the original
formula.
I know that I've made an indecently long formula even longer,
but I think it was worth it. Comments welcome.

If you use the following website, it will translate any URL's webpage
that you wish to give it:

Or you could just write Andreas Stiller at the following:

Just waving a hand out there... anyone remember how to just plot orbits? I'm
interested in tracking simply the orbits of a 4-way mandel brot (quaternary?).
Can you say Doppler Effect? ;)
