It is the policy of this list not to send attachments. The pars and formulas
which appear as text here are easily converted into par and frm files
respectively by copying and pasting them into Notepad or another text editor and
saving them with the proper extension. That is what all of us are doing.

I have no idea how you do that, but I wonder: how can you have Windows without
having DOS? Fractint can also be run from Windows in a DOS box.--

======================
Greetings,
I believe the real reason that text is the required and prefered form of
communication is that there are so many different types of e-mail involved
here that the one most basic commonality we all share is text. Also some pay
by the hour for connection and to collect the mail is enough of a task.
Downloading attachments would take more time and effort.
======================
Gedeon says fractint will run in a dos box ...meaning use the MS-Dos
prompt,
I'm sure it does for some but it won't on my machine....it always hangs
up...no matter.
I restart my machine in ms-dos mode.
Choose to change directories [ cd ] to your specific fractint directory
and type fractint.exe. { sometimes you can leave off the .exe }
cd \ means change to the highest directory ...namely the top of the C
drive... because... when you
restart in MS-DOS mode you are beginning in the windows directory which is
within the C drive.
This is why you see WINDOWS>
If this makes no sense let me know and I'll re - state the process in a
different way...
==========================================
i.e.at:WINDOWS>cd \ hit enter
at::::::C>cd frain196 hit enter
{ or what ever your fracint directory is called }
at::::::FRAIN196>fractint.exe hit enter
==========================================
well....there i did it anyways. :-)
Out of the e-mail highlight... with your cursor...
the part that is the frm and the par.
select copy.
Open note pad.
select paste...and paste the text to mote pad.
Now name the file "list1.par" or "temp.par"
and save it in the fractint directory. " " insures that the file doesn't
get named temp.par.txt as note pad automatically adds a .txt extention if
you don't use " " .
Download a coupple of copies of fractint-digest and get familiar with the
way the frms and pars look.
The architecture of the text is sometimes critical as to whether the par
or frm will be recognized by fractint as a valid file.
Also open a blank note pad { by now if you don't have one lying on your desk
top { short cut } you might want to
do that to save the time.... open a blank one and then select file \ open
and browse your way to the fractint
directory and look for a file that has the .par or .frm extention on it and
open one of the ones that function propperly.
Observe that there are no spaces in the text of the par or frm.
Observe the fact that there is no 3 dimentional looking wackiness...meaning
the left margin is straight.
Observe that at the end of all the lines in a par that denote color there is a
\ .
Sometimes the text gets a little disrupted as it was written in one e-
mail software and is opened by an other. You'll get used to it. Its good
therapy. And you may learn things about computeres you never knew.
Hope this makes sense to you.
Sincerely,
Steve

Ah, it sounds like the Stone Soup group (or *someone*) has made the downloadable
file into a self-extracting file... wonderful! I would guess that both the DOS
and Windows versions of Fractint are both self-extracting at this point, but I'm
not sure... if you download a .exe file, it is, and if it's a .zip file, then
you'll need PKUNZIP.
Thanks for the pointer, Marie! Jason Hine

David Ellis,
- 21 new instructions, all designed to operate on 4 floating point numbers
- in a single clock cycle.
Small correction: two floating point numbers, not four. (According to
AMD's "AMD-3D Technology Manual" PDF file, anyway.)

Christian,
Actually, AMD *has* increased the speed of their FPU; they needed to do
that before 3DNow! would be worth anything.
3DNow! is more than just a few instructions. The idea behind MMX is to use
a single instruction to process multiple sets of data in parallel (i.e.
four parallel multiplies). The idea behind 3DNow! is the same: use a
single instruction to do two parallel floating-point operations.
The floating-point used in 3DNow! is single-precision, so it is of limited
use to fractals. (Only low zooms would benefit.) But 3DNow! also
accelerates several operations which are normally very slow: dividing and
finding square roots. These can be done much faster with 3DNow! than with
ordinary floating-point operations, at the cost of lower precision.
Because of the low precision, I don't think 3DNow! will really offer that
much to fractal generating, much as MMX doesn't really offer much. But in
the process of adding 3DNow!, AMD finally got around to taking care of the
general floating-point performance in the AMD K6, and now it uses a
pipelined, high-throughput FPU similar in speed to Intel's processors.

Greetings,
An other option is:::
Any zip of a DOS program or Win95 program can be un zipped while in Win95
using WinZip or WinPack or any unzipping utility.
All you need to do is provide a directory to put it in.
Then acces the program from dos... or in Win95.... whatever it expects.

You're running Outlook Express 4.71.1712.3 under win9x? Then you should have
dos 7.x, not? I guess you can choose dos by (1) pressing F8 at boot-up and
then choose the Command Line option; (2) Start | Shutdown in MS-DOS mode;
(3) run a dos box within windows.

But okay, i may well have been a bit prejudiced. Sorry for that. And I
*will* take a look at these pages (that is, when my isp has finally finished

For windows WinZIP can be used instead of PKUNZIP. With winzip, even non-sfx
archives are easy to extract (and create).
This works for all zip files.

This comes up frequently.
I prefer them inlined in the text because it's more convenient for *me*.
What mailer are you using? What steps do you have to take to save and
run a par file from cutand paste? What steps do you have to take to
save and run a par file from an attachment?
e.g.
1. Double-click on "Shortcut to mailing-list.par" icon.
2. Highlight par text in email.
3. HIt Control-C.
4. Click on mailing-list.par window.
5. Hit Control-V.
6. Alt-Tab to Fractint.
7. Hit @, etc.

Besides tradition .. ;)
In this list you are not allowed to include files as attachements. So we
just copy them into the body.

When did this policy go into effect? It would be sort of nice (it
would stop people from posting those darn multipart/alternative
text/html text/plain messages) but I haven't heard of it before.

Huh? Okay, atts aren't favored. We've had that disc. But "are not allowed" -
i never heard of such a rule. Or it should be said on the list before April
15 this year - the day i joined this list. But i guess not, for discussion
of the atts issue took (amongst other times?) place after this date.

I am very puzzled by the above statement. I suspect what is intended is
that you have Fractint 19.x (DOS version) as opposed to Winfract, and you
have that copy of the program on a floppy - is that correct?
