Subject: (fractint) 14 pars (Fun!)
Here's some more images with that ever so strange looking bof60 and some
different colors.....I'm still trying to learn how to make a decent map, and
have a long way to go yet. Enjoy for now~
Jim

My apologies to the list. I posted the parfile *Dream_Woven*, which I had
previously posted as *G303002*. There's just too many fractals to discover
and no secretary to keep track of everything! <g> Again, I apologize.

Subject: (fractint) Need help
I have always been interested in fractals
I joined the e-mail group hoping to learn more about designing fractals.
but I need help:
1. What is a good beginning software program (Windows95) for
fractals?
2. What is a good beginners text?
3. I been reading all the e-mail I get from this group. Many of
them have coding which I imagine is the coordinals /color
to generate a fractals. Could you please explain to me how
this?
Thank you
Alan

Alan,
Hello and welcome to the fractint list.
What you're seeing in the list are formulas and par files which are for
fractint for DOS.
The frm file is used to generate the fractal image and the image is often
stored as a .gif
...which you may have seen at some of the web sites that are maintained by
poeple on the list. The par file is also the fractal but in numeric
form....i.e. to say ...a par file
of a specific image will generate that same image on an others computer.
Winfract is a version of fractint that runs in Win95.
I don't believe winfract will run most of the frms and pars you see here...
but it might be a way to get you more interested in fractals....and hopefully
to the point where you will
take the leap into dos and get version 19.6 of fractint. { Its not that
difficult of a leap...really}
Winfract for win95 and fractint for dos are both available at the following
address...for free.
http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/fractint.html
version 19.6 fractint for dos
and Winfract for win95
Feel free to ask questions Alan. There are many here who will gladly help you
get started.
Sincerely,
Steve

Since joining this list I have become consumed with fractals and their pgms. My
brain is suffering from fracitis!!! With so many programs to choose from I seem
to be loosing touch. Would someone please just tell what I should start with?!
I dwnld fractint but it is not starting. Don't know what I did wrong. Booted to
DOS but can't seem to get the pgm to initialize. Anyway must give my eyes a
rest. Thanks, Petra Lynn

Petra, how are you trying to start fractint, and what happens when you try?
Here's a brief list of possible problems you might be encountering:
I'll assume you've booted to DOS...
1) First, make sure you are in the same directory as the fractint program you
downloaded. You can use the DOS command 'dir' to list the contents of the
directory you're currently in, and 'cd', followed by the directory name, to
change directories. If you need an example, please ask.
2) Next, you should know that Fractint came to yuo as a compressed file, which
you will need to uncompress using a program called PKUNZIP. Type 'pkunzip' at
the DOS prompt. If you see a screen full of instruction on how to use PKUNZIP,
then press any key to get out of the instructions, and type 'pkunzip -d
fra*.zip'. This will uncompress Fractint. If you don't see the screen of
instructins when you type 'pkunzip', then you will need to download this very
commonly-used program from the web. You can find PKUNZIP for both DOS and Win95
, along with instructions for their installation, at:
http://www.pkware.net
3. Once you have Fractint unzipped, then type 'fractint' at the DOS prompt.
Fractint should start up, and present you with the opening screen which shows a
scrolling list of authors and contributors to Fractint. To see a fractal (one
known as the Mandelbrot set), just press [Enter] a few times to accept the
default settings, and after three or four presses, the fractal should draw on
your screen. Press F1 once for some help, or twice for the main help menu.
[Esc] will get you back to the main menu and if pressed again will let you exit
Fractint.
If you have trouble with step 3, let this list know, and help should be quickly
provided!

Jason, I'm not familiar with the zip version of Fractint.
My DOS version of Fractint came in a file called fraint.exe. Double
clicking on the file expanded it, and then double clicking on fractint.exe
runs the program. Is the Windows version a zipped file?

Does anyone know if work is being done on updating FractInt to work with
processors that support the new 3DNow! instructions? I saw an article on
C'T magazine where they had modified their own fractal generator to use
those instructions and got a five-fold increase in speed.

Have you tried Stephen C. Ferguson's InkBlot Kaos as a starter's fractal
generator? It's quite easy to use, and gives excellent results. Fractint is
excellent, but if you're not used to DOS, it's sort of mind-boggling for a beginner.
You can get this program from Stephen's page at

When you use Fractint to generate a fractal, you can save the
parameters you used to generate it in a text file, called a "par file",
for "parameter file". You, or some other fractint user, can then use
the settings saved in that file to generate the same fractal -- and
zoom around in it, or change parameters, or whatever.
The other thing that often gets posted here is formulas. You can
write your own formulas for fractals, which takes a certain amount of
mathematical ability, and there's quite a bit of art to it as well.

Well, I guess there are two ways, which I call the dynamical and statical
ways.
Dynamical meaning changing the view window and position, colors by color
cycling, and options from <x>,<y> and <z> screens.
Statical meaning manual, by editing saved par files in a text editor.

Geez... a five-fold increase... I don't want to sound too condescending, but
this is rather ridiculous.
A five-fold increase compared to WHAT?
And maybe the new instruction (or two or a few more) are faster, but i
really doubt the complete routine is much faster.
3DNow!? Isn't that AMD's? I don't know any details, but to me it seems
they'd better work on the fpu...
I don't know of any 3DNow! optima(liza)tion. It's too new to expect
anything.
I do know that (at least) Damien Jones is on a hunt for nanoseconds with P5
optimation.

Ok, the par's are parameter files, and we can save them and launch them
as is. But a lot of par's I see invoke formulas that aren't in any of
the .frm files that came with Fractint (at least what I got). So I'm
assuming that there are homebrew .frm files out there, or at least
listings of formulas. Maybe people even swap them, like cookie recipes.
Are there? Are they archived somewhere? Any lists of pages or FTP sites

Yes, this thing is on! There are a large number of formula files available
for download at http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/fractint.html
The largest collection of formulas, containing over 8500, is known as
Orgform, which also includes a program to organize formulas. Look for
Orgfrm.zip at the above site.
Les StClair maintains a compilation of formulas and parameters posted to
this list. Visit his homepage and you can download them.

21 new instructions, all designed to operate on 4 floating point numbers in
a single clock cycle.

It's AMD's design but they have licensed it to NSC(Cyrix) and IDT. IDT
will have a chip out in july with the instructions included.

There are several sets of parameters. Some of them can be got to by
typing x, y, or z when you're looking at the fractal.

Presumably a fivefold increase compared to the speed of the fractal
generator when it was using the standard instruction set to do the same
thing.

Why? It seems quite sensible to me that vector instructions, quick
matrix multiplies, etc., could increase the speed of appropriate code
by a factor of five or ten. It looks like the 3DNow! stuff increases
the speed of certain things by a factor of nine or so.

Not to be a jerk, but maybe you should go read some articles about the

I asked nearly the same question last weekend. I wanted to know why the
pars and formulas are sent
by text instead of being attached as a par file or frm file.
I use to get them off the net that way. Not one person gave me an answer.
I got many personal replies from people agreeing with me - but I was left
feeling that I had asked such a stupid question that no one wanted to answer
me.
I don't have DOS on my computer. I have DOS on a floppy that runs fractint
for me. So taking the formulas
to fractint from Windows is not easy. That is why I
asked the question. Is any one out there? Somebody?
Anyone? Hello!
