Your best bet is to look on the "Simtel" site which has mirrors in a
number of European cities. I had the same problem from South Africa.
Unless it's changed recently only V19.5 is available on Simtel. Go to
http://ftp.globalnet.co.uk/simtel.net/ and search for frain195.zip. If
it's not fast enough that page has a list of all the mirrors - there may
be one closer to you.
V19.6 has to be got from spanky.triumf.ca. If you need this I can only
suggest early morning when the Americans are asleep ...

There are shareware programs available that provide you the ability to
download files with the possibility of interrupting - I mean: when the
connection fails, the program continues after trying to restore the
connection. Even if the connection keeps on failing, you can pick up the
downloading even days later. And you can also interrupt the downloading
yourself, so e.g. spreading it over a couple of days.
I myself use GetRight 3.10, which installs as a windows SFX. It works with
Netscape Navigator/Communicator 4.0 and Internet Explorer 4.0. Can be
downloaded at www.getright.com. Size: 921 kB. This probably is the only
problem. But maybe someone on this list knows a smaller program.

Actually I always keep an up to date copy on my pages here in the UK, along with the source code and a copy of fracxtra.
There are links from the fractint wishlist:

Hello everybody,
I am a newcomer but I have used a version of Fractint for Windows for years.
I would like to get the newest version for DOS but I have great
difficulties.
In Bulgaria the Internet access is VERY slow and unreliable-
I cannot download the whole 0.5 MB zip file at once.
I need someone's assistence- can any of the sites I can get Fractint from
have it split in many 20 kB (or of this size or less) zip or arj files?
I asked Noel at spnaky.triumf.ca but he has limited resuorces.
Another thing, PLEASE don't send it at this address- that is the best

At one time fractint was mirrored at Simtel sites in the following
countries:
Australia
Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Canada
Chile
China
Czech Republic
Finland
France
Germany
Hong Kong
Italy
Japan
Latvia
Mexico
Netherlands
New Zealand
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovenia
South Africa
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Taiwan
Thailand
United Kingdom
The links to these sites can be reached from the webpage at:
http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/getting.html
I won't guarantee that they are all still active, but there
is a good chance that you can find a site close to home.

Thank you to whoever has and will help me with this problem. Someone
(I'm sorry, I forgot who) suggested that I rem the @ECHO OFF line in the
batch file and report my results. Here is the last segment of what I
got:
C:\Fractint\par>IF EXIST DEADBUNN.GIF GOTO 3
C:\Fractint\par>FRACTINT VIDEO=SF6 @SMOCK.PAR/DEADBUNNIES BATCH=YES
SAVENAME=DEADBUNN
Bad command or file name
C:\Fractint\par>IF ERRORLEVEL 2 GOTO ABORT
C:\Fractint\par>
C:\Fractint\par>ECHO SMOCK.BAT successfully completed.
SMOCK.BAT successfully completed.
C:\Fractint\par>ECHO.
C:\Fractint\par>GOTO END
C:\Fractint\par>
When I run the batch with echo off, all it shows is "Bad command or file
name." Any ideas?

Fractint is not in your path or your current directory when you run the
batch file.

Now, at the first line of the batch file, add the line
PATH fractdir;%path%
where <fractdir> is the full directory path of your fractint directory. This
should fix the problem.

I played a little PaintShopPro 4.14 and at first I found no size or
resolution options, but it can be done: The route to these options is
"file" -> "preferences" -> "file format preferences". Here you will be able
to specify the dpi of saved images. Still, I could only make it work
properly with TIF-files - when converted into Adobe PhotoShop both PSD and
JPG formats failed to maintain size accurately. TIF is however widely used
in dtp, so it should offer no problem.
> What fractint video mode are you using to generate the .gif that you

>If I were to use a disk / ram ' video ' mode how would I then
>convert the file? and to what?
I've made a disk/ram-videomode with a resolution on 1460x970x256. This
corresponds to a A3 page with 2╜cm margins at 100 dpi. I perfer to calculate
pictures at even multiples, i.e. 100, 200 or 400 dpi. Still, I only do 100
dpi prints with fractint; fractint cannot calculate a bitmap large enough
for a 400 dpi print.
Conversion is easy: Simply make fractint save the picture, then load your
GIF and - having set the dpi as above mentioned - save it as a TIF.
Good luck, Kim.

Not true. Load the image, press "b", and at the bottom of the screen are
three options for making images in pieces. If you set these to 2 and 2,
FractInt will save four parameter sets, as well as a handy batch file for
creating each of the pieces from those parameter sets and assembling them
into a single file. Be sure to press F1 from the "b" screen for help on
this feature. This is the technique I used to create my own poster from a
FractInt image.

Yes, significantly. PSP 5 adds "layers", which is a major new feature.
Layers allow you to keep parts of an image separate, and work on them
independently, shifting them around without affecting the other parts.
Once you've used a graphics program that has layers (like Photoshop,
PhotoImpact, Picture Publisher, or Corel Photo-Paint, to name a few) you
will never want to go back. JASC finally added this feature and it makes
Paint Shop Pro a whole new program.

Layers ...yes... and it also supports digital camera files.
I wish there was a more flexible zoom. A change of 1:1 to 1:2 is a big
jump...
and the tool pallet in 5 is floating as opposed to { i think I remember } on
the tool bar in 4.12 and 4.4?... but not a big problem.

The most important differences, layers, Photo CD capability, have already been
mentioned by others as improvements in PSP5. In addition, PSP5 has a neat
feature called picture tube brush, with a number of picture tubes available for
download at http://www.jasc.com/tubes/ (I have some fractal tubes available for
download on my web site too). PSP5 comes packaged with Animation Shop, which is
a better animation program by a long shot than Microsoft's Gif Animator. So all
things considered, it's a great improvement over previous versions.

I also use this method a lot (instructions are somewhere on page
http://spanky.triumf.ca/www/fractint/commands.html ) . There is one
disadvantage, though - it doesn't work proparly for my images that combine
boundary tracing (passes=b) and fillcolor=nnn (for instance fillcolor=255).
I have three images like these on my webgallery
(http://wwwserv.caiw.nl/~jaccobu/index.htm) . They are:
In The Dangerous Kitchen I, in Gallery 1
The Weaver In The Web That He Made, in Gallery 1
( http://wwwserv.caiw.nl/~jaccobu/images/jacco035.gif )
In The Dangerous Kitchen II, in Gallery 2
( http://wwwserv.caiw.nl/~jaccobu/images/jacco054.gif )
When aplying this so called "divide and conquer" method to these images I
get unwanted horizontal and vertical lines that indicate the different part
the image is made of. Another unwanted effect is that the boundery lines are
still 2 pixels wide, no matter what size the complete image is. But when I
want to enlarge an original image of 800x600 to, let's say 3200x2400 (four
times the original size) I would like to have the boundary lines to be four
times the original size as well (8 pixels in this case).
I can't think of any way to solve this problem, though I realise I ask a
lot. Maybe one the coloring-algorithm-formulae wizards that are on this list
can create a solution....?
bye for now

One note:
PSP 5 uses MMX technology. It will run better on P200 class + and PII
processors.
