Both Epson and HP have affordable color printers... I get great
prints with mine. {$2oo.oo+}

Subject: (fractint) Starting Out
Would someone recommend a book or good source for beginner with high
interest but little math background. I am quite fascinated by the great
variety of images possible but am intimadated by the thought of
algorithms, etc. I think I understand the basic idea of fractals but
would like to know a lot more. Thanks.

It appears to me that the syntax errors mentioned were not in the par
file, but in the formula. Perhaps you should discuss this with Jon Camp,
whose formula it was, and a replacement formula might be sent to you.

Hi:
I'm Art Baker. My website "Fractals from Ojai" has been on-line
since 1993 shortly after the first graphical browsers became
available. I displayed images from a library of over 500 fractals
that I created during the prior two years. I revised the website a
few times between 1993 and 1995. Until recently I left it alone
to count visitors and accumulate comments while I pursued other
interests.
A couple of weeks ago I stumbled onto this list and decided to
subscribe. Since that time I have become fascinated with the fantastic
work you people are doing. The quality is several orders of magnitude
greater than the work done in the early 90's.
I was so stimulated I revised the old website, replaced the old images
with others from the original collection, download the latest Fractint
for my Windows 95 machine and purchased Fx for my Windows NT Pentium Pro.
I have see if I can compete with the incredible work you people are
doing. If so, I will replace the 51 images on the website one at a time.
I have also streamlined my URL as a symbol of my renewed interest.
Accordingly (www.ayb.com/ffo/) has changed to (fratcal.cc).
You will probably see me on this list from time to time when I need help.
In the meantime I invite you all to visit fractal.cc.

It looks like it was just a problem with they way the email software
wrapped the message. I don't know if it happened on my end or yours.
Here it is again with a small formating change.
Hope this helps :)

This is a bug of the "frm in par" feature that appears when a par entry=
has the same name as the formula included in the par file. Justrename th=
e
par entry as Jcamp09_p and it will work fine. It has been fixed in the
developers version.

Yes -- but that wasn't what I was talking about, although it might be
an answer to SKarl's question.
BTW, I don't know what I was thinking when I typed $10. I meant $25.

Just now I finally got around to run all your pars submitted during the past
couple of weeks or so. Very nice images, all of them. I am particularly impressed
with those using Fractint built in formulas, because they show that those formulas
are virtually inexhaustible.

Subject: (fractint) partobat problem
I've been lurking here for several months mainly just trying to keep up
with reading the volume of mail posted here. Now that it's slowed
somewhat, I have a problem that hopefully someone here can help me solve.
I tried to run partobat 3.4 on some par files; it had no problem
creating the batch, but when I tried to run it, I just got a string of
"Bad command or file name" errors in my Dos window. It strung up a list
of as many of these errors as there were images to draw in the par file.
When v 3.5 came out, I downloaded it, thinking it might solve the
problem. It gave me the same set of errors. (I'm running Win 95 on a
200 Mhz Pentium Compaq.) HELP!!!

Find out what was causing the errors by removing
@echo off
if it exists in the batch file. This removal should cause the dos batch file
to output to the screen the commands executed. If this output is not given,
add
@echo on
to the beginning of the batch file.
This output is needed for further help.

I've made quite a few color-laser prints and I must say that I'm very
pleased with the results, especially considering the low cost compared to
photographic reproduction.
My local photo-shop has a color-photocopying-machine that can be used as a
printer and it's resolution is 400 dpi, so the output can be rather
astonishing. Still, fractint's resolution maximum of 2048x2048 pixels not
quite enough to fill an entire A3-page (that takes some 5900x3900 pixels),
so it can be recomended either to make a routine that can calculate such a
picture or settle for 100 or 200 dpi.
Even with highly intense colors, the reproduction is fine - it's even
comparable to the colors on the monitor; one migt even say, that the bright
colorswork better than more pastel-like colors.
Normally I convert the fractint gif-file to a format that specifies size and
dpi in order to avoid surprises during printout (fx adobe, since this is the
programme my local dealer is using).

Strictly speaking, nothing. The M-set maps those points which do not
eventually escape to infinity - the key word being "eventually".
Every image produced that uses only a finite number of iterations of the
z^2+c mapping is inherently only an _approximation_ to the true M-set,
albiet one that gets better and better as the number of iterations
increases. The M-set itself _is_ what remains as the number of iterations
approaches infinity (since this is a natural number, it can never _reach_
infinity, which is not a natural number).
So if we're only looking at approximations here, how much of what we're
looking at is really there? Perhaps there is some law or relation or at
least a rule of thumb that allows one to estimate how many iterations are
necessary to reproduce an approximation that is as accurate as can be
achieved at a given resolution and magnification. I don't know, but perhaps
someone else does.

Kim...Welcome to the list and thanks for the informative response.
My local print shop has Adobe Photo Shop on Mac and appearently a way to
get it to paper. [ more research]
I have PaintShopPro5 which supports Photoshop file extentions .psd
although I'm not sure if you're saying that this is the file type that
specifies size and dpi?... as there are no ' readily visible ' options other
than ' save as ' and selecting the file type. [ I'll call them today and see
what they recomend ]
What fractint video mode are you using to generate the .gif that you
convert and take to print?
If I were to use a disk / ram ' video ' mode how would I then
convert the file? and to what?
I'm going to think about this a bit and maybe send that last question onto the
list if I can't figure it out.
Welcome to the fractint discussion list and thank you for your valued input

Subject: RE: (fractint) Resource List
Hello everybody,
I am a newcomer but I have used a version of Fractint for Windows for years.
I would like to get the newest version for DOS but I have great difficulties.
In Bulgaria the Internet access is VERY slow and unreliable-
I cannot download the whole 0.5 MB zip file at once.
I need someone's assistence- can any of the sites I can get Fractint from
have it split in many 20 kB (or of this size or less) zip or arj files?
I asked Noel at spnaky.triumf.ca but he has limited resuorces.
Another thing, PLEASE don't send it at this address- that is the best
way to have the e-mail service denied to me.
Best wishes
