Subject: (fractint) Fractint on a 400 MHz computer
Hi Fractalizens:
Just got word this afternoon that my 400 MHz Compaq Presario 4880
Pentium II was shipped to me today and I can expect it on my doorstep
tomorrow morning.
I discussed the Fractint program with the caller and told him about the
program's not recognizing some video cards. He told me that if I have
any problems in getting it to work on my new machine--it works quite
well on my current 486/66--he will help me to get it working properly.
He's a technician who works solely on the Compaq Presario line and
offered his help because of the long delays getting my new computer
because of some unforseen glitches.
So, the next time you guys may hear from me is when I'm able to use
Fractint on a 400 MHz machine. Keep your Mandelbrots crossed for me,
would you please? Thanks.
Bob

Subject: (fractint) Orgform.exe
William,
>
This may already be fix in new version but I found Orgform gave an
"unspecified exception" running in DOS under Win95 and just hangs in pure
DOS
on a P-II 350.
Worked fine before the upgrade.
<
You're the only one to report this so far. It sounds like the same problem
that people were having with partobat - I'll check with Mike Peters to see
if his solution, which I gather is working for people, can be used in
orgform too.
Incidentally, you can run orgform with an undocumented switch "/dborg" (for
"debug orgform") in addition to any other switches you may be using, which
will cause the program to give information, probably useful only to me,
about the circumstances surrounding the termination of the program. That
won't be of much help when the program hangs the computer, though. :)
Regards,
George Martin

Using the /dborg parameter gives---"Error in file read or write function"
"Programmer refference: See line 1932"
"Memory allocation error"
"Cannot start COMMAND, exiting"
Noticing that if always fails on the same frm file, I renamed that frm to just
fr and then I got no error message and got the "unspecified exection" message
from Win95.
The rest of the message is "Fault location 095:012a" and "Interrupt 0"
Renaming the file back seems to make it fail on a different frm file. Judging
from the two failures I would say that /dborg is slowing the machine down just
enough to work for a while.
The unspecified exception is almost instantaneously present and the other one
runs thru 5 or 5 pars then dies

Here's one last popcorn rendering. All of the pars
produce gold images against a black background. In these
images I've used the color ranges in ways I didn't originally
have in mind when I developed the method.

Here are three pars to be used with my FB_Popcorn formula
that I posted a couple of days ago. These pars are different
in that the image is inverted with respect to a circle of
radius=1 centered at the origin. But what really makes these
images worthwhile is Linda's colormap.

Subject: (fractint) 3 pars and two frms
Hi all! Here's a few pars along with two new formulas that I made. I
am not really sure why comeout the way they do. I started with a
simple taylor expansion of cos(x) and modified the mandelbrot set with
it with hopes of maybe getting it to take on a different shape. Then i
decided to complicate things by finding the taylor expansion about c
and slowly increasing a coefficient. Needless to say this is all
almost completely random :) but they looked kinda neat.....
oh, an I thought they were cool enough to put on my webpage so if you
are too lazy to cut and paste and calculate them (like I often am),
take a look at the last three fractals on my page.

Subject: (fractint) sstools.ini problem
Good morning,
I have a slight problem. Not severe but, it should not be.
It pertains to my sstools.ini file - again!
When I open Fractint, I get a black screen with the following message on it:
"Fractint found the following problems when parsing commands:
Can't find parmfile=c:\fractint\parms\*.par please check =?(x) "
The last parenthesis and x are mine because I don't know what to call the
symbol that is there. It looks like a number 6 with a small upthrust arrow
tip on the stem.
I am pasting a copy of my sstools.ini file onto this message.
Can somebody figure out what is wrong?
[fractint]
textsafe=yes
fastrestore=yes
recordcolors=yes
video=sf5
float=yes
parmfile=c:\fractint\parms\*.par
formulafile=c:\fractint\formula
map=c:\fractint\maps
The above parm file line is one that was copied from a template of Jack
Valero - except, of course, I left off the name of his file.
All the rest of the sstools.ini file seems to work just fine.
Thanks Ray

Do you have a subdirectory (in your Fractint directory) that is named
parms? If not, you need to create one.

Hi Andrej! I'm sorry it has been so long since your post, and I hope you have
found it already, but in case you have not here is a site that I am just now
looking at and it lists raw2pov amongst its files:) I had kept aside your post
on the fractint list in case I ever found it as I am also using pov and
fractint but have not been very happy with the quality of my (two) attempts at
importing fractals into povray.
http://shell3.ba.best.com/~beale/gforge/
The site was recommended to me to find Gforge which has been recommended to me
as a heightfield utility. Hope this info helps! Good luck with Pov-it's fun,
but challenging:)

Hi again... I just thought I'd better tell you that on further perusal of the
site, the raw2pov there is source code to be compiled on a unix platform. I
know I can't use it:( Sorry if you can't use it.

You'd be surprised by the number of things for Unix that compile fine
on MS-DOS and (especially) Win32 systems.

Les...
Thank you so much for putting together May's frm's and par's. 750 pars did you
say?? Wow!!
I picked up the files at your site yesterday and had a delightful time browsing
through the pars. There were many that I had missed in my own attempt at trying
to keep them straight. I thought folks had really wonderful images to share.
Thanks again
