Hmm...I noticed in both of these pars (the ones Angela and Sylvie posted)
that the colors part was about twice as long as it was in the original
par I posted. Does that mean you were using a higher resolution with
more colors? I've been trying to set fractint at *anything* higher than
640x480 256 colors, but I either get a very flickery screen or fractint
says 'that mode is not recognized by your video card'. Now, under
Windows NT I can display at 1024x768 with 65536 colors, with NO flicker,
so why won't fractint display at that resolution? Does anyone know how
to get rid of the flicker?

Subject: (fractint) periodicity=nnn on menu
Would folks like to see the commandline control periodicity=nnn
promoted to menu status?
It would be OK with me if this were a permanent fixture. However,
periodicity could easy change. Maybe I could make a "top secret
developer's menu page" that is sort of the analogy of the "top secret
developer's <tab> status screen". The idea is that the menu would be
for convenience, but we wouldn't promise to keep the commands or
their syntax the same from version to version.
To play devil's advocate, why would you want periodicity=nnn in a
menu since entering it via the <G> command is so easy?

Cliff...
256 colors is the max for fractint. I used one of the color maps available at
http://wizzle.simplenet.com/fractals/hints/graphic_hints.htm
Lots of people contributed color maps in both map format (zipped) and par
format. You can download a few and maybe play around a bit to see how they work
on your own images.

Because not all of us newbies know about the <G> command. In fact, this
newbie doesn't even know what 'periodicity=nnn' does in the first place :)

Well, this is technically not quite true. There are color printing
machines (usually used in publishing houses) that can do 2100 x 2100
dpi, but they cost tens of thousands of dollars. And Intel has some
machines that can print 75,000 x 75,000 dpi or so, but they generally
don't print in color. They use them to make Pentiums, among other
things.

There are appropriate places to put a megabyte of C++ for a new
fractint. Mailing lists are not among them.
There are appropriate places to announce having put such things on a
web site. The fractint-devel list (isn't that what it's called?) is
one of them. The fractint list is moderately appropriate.

to? The mailing list to which you sent the half-hearted apology I'm

Hi All
I don't know how close Ver 20 is and I wouldn't want to make any changes
that would slow it down. I have had a few words with Tim about a couple of
changes that make sense to me. Let's see if I am a minority of one in these
areas. Quotes are from Tim.
>To play devil's advocate, why would you want periodicity=nnn in a
>menu since entering it via the <G> command is so easy?
I wouldn't mind what menu it might appear on or leave it still to the <g>
command if the default were none. Entry from the <g> command doesn't stick.
Don't all inside coloring methods really depend on the itteration being run
to the limit? Prematurely pulling out would leave the exit data depending
on the periodicity function. Except for pictures with large high count
areas the time saved wouldn't be much, particularly where processor speeds
are getting so high. Even my P90 is 4000 times as fast as the system I
started with 12 years ago.
>Our reasoning (2which may not suit everyone) is that viewwindows
>parameters are similar to video modes (maybe part of the "video

>are not written to PAR files.
I have noticed a few that use viewwindow for specil effects. My view has
been that the default mode is great for previewing a slow scan, but of
little utility beyond that. It's a sticky command that has to be explicity
revoked. When it has been set it is written into a par file and included
with the saved gif file. This can result in one picture in a series
upsetting how another is displayed. Writing it into everything saved would
solve things without having having to change its status.
While I am up on my soapbox lets throw in one more item. Has the formulfile
entry in parameter files outlived its usefullnes. Fractint searches fast
and Orgform keeps the number of files to a minimum. With everyone keeping a
different file arrangement one of the things I do in editing a posted par
file is to delete the formulaname entry. The only trouble spot I see is
that it might be necessary when the formula is burried in the parameter
file. Admittedly this doesn't save much time, but why go looking in the
wrong place first?
Enough for now.

Subject: (fractint) Double Exposure Dragons Formula
comment {
This formula applies the "double exposure" rendering method
to the Julia sets of Newtons's solution of (w*w-1)*(w*w+c)=0.
The coordinates for the Julia sets were picked off two of the
midgets from the pars included with the Dbl_Expos_Newt1
formula. The second par I made especially for Linda (Gumbycat)
who really liked the image with the midget that was used for
that Julia set.
The degree of symmetry in these images is the same as that
of the the images containing the midgets from which the
Julia set coordinates were picked.
Sometime in the near (I hope) future I'll go into detail on
how to find the tiny "dragons" (they're infinite in number
in a properly chosen Newton Julia set).
I hope you enjoy these double exposure dragons - they are
probably different than any Julia dragons you've seen
before (at least their surroundings are).

In my "Double Exposure Dragons Formula" posting a few minutes ago
I mistakenly said I made the second par especially for Linda
(Gumbycat). Wrong - I should have said the first par, not the
second one.

Oh, I don't know. Because I'm lazy and my memory's flakey?
Also because I'd like to be able to easily check its status.

Subject: (fractint) fractint v20 and beyond
Now that I am out of the shareware market, perhaps people won't accuse me
of having "vested" interests in the following criticism. I don't use
Fractint, per se, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see
improvements made in it, especially the user-interface. Anyone afraid of
having some of their most basic beliefs in Fractint challenged need not
read on.
New to this list, I'm not quite sure of the direction of Fractint, but
I've been told that it will presumably support true color in the version
after v20. I'm getting the strong feeling, just from the brief time I've
had to browse the numerous messages on the list, that the programmers of
Fractint intend to keep the same DOS-style interface in future versions.
If that isn't the case, then the following may be overstated, but if
true... IMO, this is a big mistake, as WinFract could have much more
than its present psuedo-Windows-compatible content. More on this below.
With all the hype I have read about the greatness of Fractint, why is it
so hard for its programmers to get a real handle on Windows programming?
Is it because to understand Windows coding, you have to like Windows? It
all goes back to the original demand for maximum speed, and the apparent
overhead of Windows that makes graphics "unacceptably" slow. Like the
DOS interface, this notion is obsolete. Fractal programming benefits
from assembly-language coding, true, but Windows certainly doesn't
restrict the programmer there. Almost all the speed-up techniques
Fractint uses in its DOS version can be applied in a Windows program.
What is left to complain about? Mainly that the screen can't be drawn in
a second or two, like a DOS program can do by getting "under" the
system's graphics layers. So for the sake of a few seconds draw time,
the most powerful version of Fractint(not necessarily the most powerful
fractal program anymore) keeps a character-based windowing interface and
an archaic help system. I have some reservations about whether the
screen-draw time is even an issue these days, as I have a Windows program
that draws Fractint's opening screen(the Mandelbrot set) in true color in
4 seconds or less(800X600 at 233 Mhz) without the extensive optimization
that Fractint uses(like symmetry and periodocity.) The combination of
assembly language and solid guessing is as effective in Windows as in
DOS.
Or are there other considerations we aren't being informed about? Is it
the screen draw time, or plain stubbornness, or just incompetence? I
don't throw this out lightly. I've used WinFract some in Windows 3.1,
and that was hardly a graceful multitask promoting program. Numerous
bugs made it crash or mess up Windows. The help file was much
abbreviated from the full DOS version, which made it hard to understand
some features without reading the DOS help file. No attempt to upgrade
this poor showing to a Windows 95 program. Even less attempt to include
what the DOS version of Fractint now includes.
I would welcome a chance to contribute to a genuine Windows 95 version of
Fractint, one that would once and for all lay the "DOS" version to rest.
(Who today prefers the DOS command line interface to the clarity and
elegance of Windows 95? Or it need not be compared to Windows 95, but
any up-to-date windowing system, such as Macintosh or X-Windows...) I
couldn't make this offer when my programs were still shareware, but I'd
sure like to improve the quality of fractal artistry as it now stands.
There is much in my own programs that would add to the power of Fractint,
including true color, AVI and midi support. The problem I have now is
deciphering much of the abstract(optimizing) code that Fractint has
accumulated over the years. Maybe there is a master decryption log to
explain all the routines in Fractint's source code, because as it is
distributed now, no one programmer could understand it all(without a log
book.) If there is any attempt to keep a Windows 95 version current and
maintainable, complete documentation for all source code, as well as
program options, is necessary.
Any comments, Tim?
Best Regards,
Terry W. Gintz
