Bud Christenson's nice image "Lucifer Holds Court" prompted me to post
this old par. The formula is mine, as far as I can tell, since I did not
find it in Orgform. It is loosely based on the parametric equations of a
cycloid.

Hi,
=20
I quite often download technical / scientific papers from the =
internet. In many cases these papers are formatted to PostScript, .ps =
files. Although I have Linux installed (no more, no less), and I do have =
the possibility to view and print these files, I'm much more comfortable =

know such a program, and know where to download?

Thanx in advance,

Sorry for not getting back on this right away. I was away for a
while and have been reading thru some 750+ list messages waiting for me on

pars. (Don't want to miss anything good :)
Yes, this was one of mine, I was a bit sloppy and didn't properly identify
it as such. I usually prefix the name of any formula variations I do with
my initials (as in pd-xxx01 etc). I will get myself in the habit of
putting my name in them from now on, promise!

Welcome back Philip.....
I like the idea of identifying one's work via one's initials. Hence....I could
name my pars avw_98_drival002, etc. Now....question here.....how long can a par
name be? I suppose I could work it out by looking at fractint, but I'd probably
forget by the time I got to the important issue of deciding on a nomenclature
scheme (which of course only I will understand).
In looking at the information Philip has posted with his par....of which only
the first line is visible when I actually go to view it.....I find the name and
date information most useful when I scroll thru my list of pars for a given
month. t=whatever is not all that thrilling. My most pressing concern is trying
to figure out which pars I've already looked at and which ones I just pasted up.
The notion that I should be able to remember what I pasted up 5 minutes ago is
unrealistic.....about 60 seconds is my retention time at my age (ancient), with
some sort of logrithmic curve if I have to remember more than one thing (techy,
huh??).
So.....all this yap leads to ...
1. naming your pars and frms with some relationship to your identity is Useful
2. comments in the first line providing information about who you are and when
you posted the par is even more Useful
3. comments providing puting time is nice but secondary (unless the par takes
days, weeks or years)
4. no comments and cute par names make me tend to leave those pars for
later...often MUCH later
5. cute par names and comments like "wow....isn't this just a too wonderful
image" make me yawn....but elevate the par to somewhat more important than those
which are for much later .....I think I'll look at them about a nano second
sooner

Subject: (fractint) Digital art on $1.50 a day
Hello all,
At times there have been discussions here on various pieces
of graphic software and laments at the high cost of computing.
A recent incident reminded me of those and I thought I'd share
the experience.
An acquaintance of mine is afflicted with a common problem.
She is long on imagination but short on cash. As an artist
she has wanted to try digital work for some time. But
everytime she discussed the necessary with friends, the
total came to several $1000 for hardware/software.
We got to talking, did a bit of bargain hunting and now
she's in business for a lot less than she imagined.
We found a refurbished 486dx at a flea market and increased the
memory to 20 megs- left the hard disk alone at 450 meg.
I know it's not state of the art but it *was* not very
long ago. Besides, with the memory upgrade, it cost her
less than $500 Canadian and came with dos/win31.
At the same flea market we found an old copy of kpt 1.0
for $15. The real bargains were some back issues of English
computer mags, PC Plus and Computer Arts. These mags
include CDs with software. But here's the trick. Several
software publishers have taken to promoting new products
by putting older versions on the cd and offering an
upgrade deal to current versions. These aren't crippled or
time limited versions. They are complete working copies
of the older product exactly as it was sold. Except there
is no manual- just the help files. At 5 bucks per mag she
got legal copies of Picture Publisher 3.1 (an image editor
similar to PhotoShop), Poser 1.0 (a neat program that
builds 3d human figures) and Asymmetrix 3D F/X (a 3d
renderer with some modeling abilities) and Claris Works
(an integrated package giving word processing, spreadsheet,
database, and limited graphics/publishing). We then got on
the web and put together a collection of freeware fractal
generators, graphic utilities and photoshop filters.
At the end of the day she had spent just a bit under $550.
Over a year, that's about $1.50 a day- about the price
of a cup of coffee in Canada. My point is that you can do a
lot if you are willing to settle for just a bit less. If she
listened to her computer hobbyist friends she would still be
waiting and wishing (and as a bonus, the programs she bought
were developed when the 486 was the big boy on the block so
she is not suffering as much as it would appear at 1st blush).
I expect that she'll do quite well as she has the talent that,
unfortunately, is not included with hardware or software.
I also picked up a copy of 3D F/X and Poser. If you want to
see what can be done, I've just updated our gallery with
another 20 images. Many of them used these 2 programs- along
with fractal components of course! As I'm still tinkering
with these programs I expect that far better results are
possible than I've achieved so far. Just remember that these
are not high art- perhaps low pop.

Hi,
For some reason the hidden counter on our web pages was
under reporting the number of hits. I stumbled across a
web site report system offered by my isp and was
stunned to discover the true number.
I guess it's about time the pages were updated so I have
just added 20 thought-images. Fair warning to the fractal
purists- about 2/3rds of the new stuff have varying degrees
of post processing but all include a fractal as part of the
image. Been playing with some new software- well, new to me :)
As always, if you discover any glitches let me know by
private email rather than cluttering the list.

Hi Wizzle & Fractal Crew:
The only virus I'm aware of is that of my constant need to create
fractal artwork.
I see that the last batch of pars I sent a few minutes ago got through
without double-spaced lines. Hallelujah! What I did to prevent
double-spacing of the colors params was to paste the par file in the
e-maile message box, click on View, and uncheck Wrap Long Lines.
Gotta go. Have to see what hath Mandel brought. :-)))))

Do you ever wonder if Benoit Mandelbrot cares that we never use his full
name? Well, always never use his full name or his correct last name for
that matter. It's like calling Tim Wegner, "WEG", or Lee Skinner, "SKIN".
Wouldn't it bother you?

Thx to the formatting, Netscape refuses to quote, so here's the text of the
message I wish to reply to:
I agree, anything by Pink Floyd would be cool, and 'Mars' by Holst would be
really cool.
Pete
I heard that the track "The Devil's Triangle" on King Crimson's "In the Wake of
Posiedon" album is partially based on "Mars". It would be perfect: It gets
quite chaotic at the end, and you could call the Sierpinski triangle a "devil's
triangle" of sorts. :-)
All right, so I'm pushing King Crimson a bit much. But they are my favorite
band ever.
Some Pink Floyd before "Meddle" might work too, especially studff from the
second disc of "Ummagumma," if you're looking for musical chaos.
Likewise from me, particularly Enigma (Any of Pink Floyd's - "Shine On
You
Crazy Diamond" especially). It still depends on the animations
of course; but Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz" and Holst's "Saturn",
"Uranus"
and "Neptune" movements might have their uses.

Subject: Re: (fractint) Names + par
Hi Angela,
OK, here's my reasoning on names:
For formulas, by putting my initials first, I know that all of my frms will
be grouped
together in the orgform collection and easy to find. The rest of the name
generally
refers to the original formula it is derived from, the name of the person
who inspired
it, or a par file that I put together at some point using the formula,
depending on
what seems appropriate at the time.
With pars, I keep the name itself to 8 characters to avoid problems with
Partobat.
Usually a short reference to the formula used and a number sequence. I
don't
know what the actual limits are on name length.
I used to try using descriptive names but after fretting over what to call
an image too
many times I gave up. Some folks are really good and creative at
descriptive names,
however.
I like seeing the "t=0:00" in the description because I look for the quick
ones to run right
away, and save the longer ones to run later.
Oh well, whatever works, I suppose, Here's a par using the SpiderM1
formula:
