Actually, you can find even lower prices at EBay or Haggle Online --
http://www.ebay.com/aw/ and http://www.haggle.com/ -- usually used
equipment, but not all.
Fry's has an extremely bad reputation among geeks for quality and
support, but personally, I didn't have any trouble with the things I
bought from them -- RJ-45 crimpers, CAT-5 cable, and a CD-ROM drive.

Thanx, but what I actually meant was how to keep sending HTML without the
plain text part. Maybe this isn't possible, but I guess the plain text is
only included for compatibility reasons, which I want to disable. (To this
list I will send only messages formatted in plain text though; I've read
some of the members are using very old - this is an understatement - mail
readers).

Subject: (fractint) spooky themes
Is it just me, or does it seem a lot of us are six months
out of sync? With all of the spooky themes (spiders,
ghosts, goblins, Lucifer, zombies) you'd think it was
Halloween! Hopefully some of us will remember to
dredge this stuff up in the fall.
This gives me an idea. Some of us have seasonal theme
sections of our Web sites, but given the interest in certain
themes relevant to holidays (I recall a number of images,
including my own, for Christmas, New Year's Eve, Valentine's
Day, Easter) I think it would be really cool if someone with
spare server space (not me, at least not until I can scrape
up the extra cash for a Simplenet account) would set up a
theme page for the list. I guess I'd better start thinking
about the 4th of July (relevant only to us yanks)...

Even fairly recent mailreaders don't necessarily support HTML, you know.
My mailreader is Pine 3.96, dated 28 February 1997, and it doesn't
support HTML.

In trying to get my Diamond Fire GL1000 Pro to work with FractInt, I have:

2. installed SciTech Display Doctor based on the advice of Tim Wegner:

Since installing SDD, the vsa2cfg program recognizes many more modes for my card
and I have entered the information in fractint.cfg as Sylvie suggests but I
still get the message that this video mode is not supported.
Does anyone have any advice here?

Please, no more! If I'm in WinDOH!s, I use Pine on the school's mail

Well, I, for one, am willing to forgive him, if he did this out of naivete
and not maliciousness. Actually, if you are a new computer user and your
company has always had T1 access, this is an easy mistake to make. For
example, when I first saw his message and the attachment, I did not give it
a second thought. For our system, a 1Mb attachment is nothing. Of course
the firestorm of protest that followed is certainly justifiable. But
(again, assuming he just made a mistake), he must feel bad enough already.
Just my 00000010 cents.

OK, maybe your version of Pine isn't quite old, but in a way quite
old-fashioned :-)
I always thought Linux (and its apps) were in front of the queues when new
technologies, formats and standards are introduced. But maybe Pine is an
exception to that. (Or maybe you use pine on another platform). I can't make
a good judgment on Pine, as I always declined to use it. From your postings,
i deduced you don't really favor windows, but for some applications (like

Sometimes. But Linux is fairly user-driven; people don't start
implementing things until they want them. Commercial vendors implement
what they think people *will* want, in the near future.
Linux and Linux apps therefore tend to not be quick to jump on
technology bandwagons.
> But maybe Pine is an

Actually, I use Pine on SunOS 4.1 :)
(I use it on Linux, too, though, and it's almost identical.)
Look at the message-ID's. Ones that contain 'PINE.SOL' are running on
Solaris (yes, it's funny), ones that contain 'PINE.GSO' are running on
Solaris and are compiled with gcc, ones that contain 'PINE.LNX' are
running on Linux, etc.

Well, there are some really spiffy email clients for Linux these days.
The ones I've heard people praise the most are TkRat (and its offspring
Postilion), XFMail, and Mutt. Mutt is a text-based one, and TkRat and
XFMail are GUIish.
TkRat is at <URL:http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~maf/ratatosk/>, with
screenshots at
<URL:http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~maf/ratatosk/tour/tour.html>.
Postilion is at <URL:http://www.postilion.org/>, with screenshots at
<URL:http://www.postilion.org/doc/Looks.html>.
XFMail is at <URL:http://burka.netvision.net.il/xfmail/xfmail.html>,
with several screenshots at different URLs, like
<URL:http://burka.netvision.net.il/xfmail/images/xfmail_main.gif> and
<URL:http://burka.netvision.net.il/xfmail/images/xfmail_view.gif>.
There are fifteen other email programs for Linux listed at
<URL:http://freshmeat.net/appindex?mode=category&item=eMail>. Some are
spamfilters, some are user-agents (like Pegasus and the other programs
I've listed), some are mail server software, some are other things.
Me, I'm just lazy. Once I had a working and reasonably-nice mail
user-agent, I didn't bother to change it.
This is way off the topic of fractint, though.

Woule someone please tell me (and others in the dark, too) how to get
the assigned ICQ numbers, how to log in to the chat rooms, etc. I have
my own chat software (Sprychat, I think) which I've never used. Be
interesting to talk in real time to some of you, especially now that I
use breath mints. <g>

Bob,
If you want to chat with people on ICQ, you have to have ICQ. When you
install the ICQ software, it will sign you up (it's free) and assign you a
number. If you know the name or e-mail address of someone, you can use the
ICQ software (or the mirabilis.com web site) to search for their ICQ number.

name be?

Fractint recognizes the first 18 characters of an image name. There is no
harm in a longer name; the extra characters are simply ignored.
Same with formulas. In version 20.0, a formula name greater than 18
characters will produce an error message.
Another thought anent image names: Partobat, which many of us use, keys off
the image name to set the file name for saving the completed image. It is
therefore helpful if image names are limited to 8 characters, *especially*
if the last character or characters in a group of images is an index number
(e.g. abc1, abc2, abc3 ...).

I'm not suffering from crashes, by the way. My WinNT 4.0 SP3 is quite
stable. I've only had one crash last 3 months, and that was because of some
wrong bios setting of mine. [Can't say the same of the betas of Win98 i've
seen - 2&3].

Right. :-P

Hmm.. think so too. Although I prefer dos over windows over unix, I don't
like microsoft's attitude towards others on the market. Yes, I copy the

Subject: (fractint) Two equation formula (long)
comment {
This formula applies the same rendering method to both the
classic Mandelbrot set equation (Msets and a Julia set) and
the Pokorny equation (Julia sets only). In all the pars
the size factor, imag(p1), is set large enough that the rings
are filled in, giving the image elements the appearance of
dimpled balls or spheroids. Reducing this factor to where the
balls become rings gives, in effect, a whole new rendering
method.
I apologize for the number of pars - I guess I got carried away.
Because there are a lot of them, I've numbered them in my order
of preference in case you don't want to try them all. There are
many more I could have included, but I thought it best to save
them for a future posting. Also, this rendering method works well
with a very wide range of equations, so you'll be seeing it again
in several future posts. Here's the list of pars:
Mandelbrot:
1 Mardi_gras_dragon - a dragon in his festive, fruity costume
2 period8_cascade - a *very* colorful cascade
6 mandelhenge - posted before(?) with different colors
4 3D_cascade - dramatic, looks like a torpedoe attack
7 double_spiral - big, rounded spiral
9 ring_tubes_mset - Mset zoom with midget
13 loops_mset - " " "
11 cross_mset - " " "
3 period8_mset - colorful Mset zoom near period 8 bulb
12 seahorse_mset - near outer edge of Mset in Seahorse Valley
Pokorny:
5 highlights - interesting - peaks are lit up
8 silky_spiral - looks smooth and silky
10 footprint_spiral - strange footprints spiral in
14 pokorny_spiral - colorful, simple spiral
