Fractint-List,
Sorry for that last message, I didn't intend for it to be list-wide.
Anyone want to see the latest in Fractint for the Macintosh? I could
enclose it in an email. haha. just kidding. no, really ;-)

Linux is really pretty easy to install, especially if you get a good
distribution, like RedHat. Hardware support tends to be more limited
than with Win95, though, because hardware vendors write drivers for
Win95 before releasing their cards; Linux drivers are usually written
by people outside the company, beginning after release.
On my machine, gentle, Linux (Slackware96) installed nicely out of the
box. The only glitch was that I needed to download a more recent
version of X (the GUI) before I could run GUI programs on it -- I had a
recent Cirrus card.
Look at the Hardware HOWTO before you decide to install Linux on a
particular machine, though :)

I should add a caveat here. RedHat, Caldera, SEUL, etc., are intended
to be easy to install. I understand they generally do a prety good
job. Slackware is *not* easy to install if you're not comfy with Unix
already. I understand Debian is in between.

Kragen,
- Linux is really pretty easy to install, especially if you get a good
- distribution, like RedHat.
This depends very much on the person, moreso than the system. Even RedHat
(which I've installed many times) assumes the person knows quite a bit
about UNIX, Linux, and PCs in general. It's quite intimidating for
novices, and while it's better than not having an install script at all,
it's not nearly as easy as installing, say, Windows 95.
My point is that most of the people who say Linux is easy seem to have
forgotten how much they've learned. It's pretty easy for someone familiar
with it, but it's scary indeed for a neophyte.

I have installed Linux on my puter about five times. I was never quite fond
of it. I'm convinced, that even with the 'user-friendly' installation with
RedHat, newbies can't do without the help of some expert.
As a matter of fact, just today I tried to install SuSE 5.1 (using 2.0.33).
Installation failed time and time again after selecting packages. I finally
installed Slackware 3.4 (kernel 2.0.30). Seems to work. Now the

Subject: (fractint) Music for fractal animations.......
Hello All,
I'm new to the list and kinda new to fractals. I started generating
fractals with the intent upon making a video. Currently I have
35 or so 30-second animations made. I'm using a DV Master video
capture/playback/Firewire card wih 27 Gigs of SCSI Ultra-Wide
Hard Drives. I'm curious to know what kind of music the people on
the list would like to have on a Fractal Animation Video. (I
produce music as well.)
Thanks....... DLF

Subject: (fractint) File length limit
I have received a number of messages suggesting that the new 15000
byte limit for a message for this mailing list is too small. I am
willing to put the limit back to the old value of 40000, but first
I'd like to hear from anyone (by private mail please, not to the
list) who would be inconvenienced by receiving 40K messages.
To put this in perspective, fractint.frm is 36K, but has well over
1000 lines. Do we really want to send unsolicited 1000 line
messages to all 230-250 list members?
The 15000 limit is enough for a 500 line file with an average 30
bytes per line, which is typical for PAR and FRM files.
Also, if anyone can volunteer an FTP site to post files, that would
be an alternative for larger files.
Your wish is my command. Send your opinions to me one way or the
other in a short message to twegner@phoenix.net and I
will report back the results.

I vote for violin concertos or madrigals, but that's my own preference.
If not, why not some Elvis? :) Or Beatles? It all depends on the
coloring of the 30 second clips. Is it happy, sad, chaotic, ordered,
smooth, abrupt, bright, dull, euphonious, cacaphonous? I would choose the
most fitting music. Good thing about classical music is that it
encompasses all of that somewhere.
There's the problem of fractals being chaotic in nature while music isn't.
Anyway, it all depends on the mood of the animation.

I would have to take offense to that statement. The "musique concrete" of
the 1960s sounds pretty chaotic to my ear. Of course, many would dispute
that it is really music...
*WARNING: shameless plug* King Crimson's album THRaKaTTaK Also has many
chaotic elements in it because it is a collection of live improvisations.
Also the end of "21st Century Schizoid Man."
Of course, some people feel the same way about King Crimson as they do
about musique concrete. :-)
My $.0000002...

"Embryonic Journey" by Jefferson Airplane
Most Mozart, Bach, and other classical pieces.

Hi, Arlo! Welcome to the list!
I don't think anyone can just look at a par file or two and make any
assumptions about the areas of specialty or talent of the fractal artist
that generated the file. I think it's just something you have to continue
to explore until you find it yourself. I find that I spend my fractaling
time doing whatever I enjoy doing, regardless of whether I have any talent
in that area (ok, the rest of you . . . . no snickering!).
But should you decide that you are more of an artist than a mathematician,
I have a couple of my "tips and hints" pages up right now at:

and
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/5519/lesson.html
and wizzle has several more of both mine and her own posted at:

Maybe they will help you decide.
Sorry but I couldn't identify your "sara" formula
Good luck! :))

Excellent choices!!! Many of which I would have chosen, especially any
of Enigma's or Loreena McKennitt's. Also, you might consider
Rachmaninov's Variations on a Theme of Pagini, and any of Pink Floyd's.

Well, that all depends on the fractal and the transition effect of the
animation. For example: a majestically beautiful and complex fractal
like Kathy Roth's recent "Godhead" could appear dissolving to the final
chords of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony. Paul Carlson's "bubbly"
fractals would go well with Vivaldi bassoon concerti. And what about Dr.
J's humorous stuff? Perhaps Alban Berg's Violin Concerto, though some
would say that the latter is not funny. The gravijuls are definitely
suited to Haydn String Quartets, in my opinion. And Jim Muth's fantastic
output ranges anywhere from Bach to Shostakovich. As for my own
creations, I modestly prefer to view them silently.

Hmmmm..
It would seems most appropriate if you had at least some
fractally generated music pieces. I've heard several which are good, I
believe they were in midi format, but that's not hard to work with.

Welcome to the list Greg!! I love your nickname....Fiddler....perfect for
Fractal Fiddling.
I haven't had a chance to look at your par yet, but if you are a disciple of
Linda's I know it will be great.
Hope you have a great time on the list

Welcome to the list Arlo!!!
I think you should specialize in what you like to do best....after
all...fractaling should be fun. And, unfortunately, only you know what you like
and don't like.
One thing I have observed from my own year with Fractint, is that I've developed
a sort of style and enjoy that which I'm fairly good at.....coloring. I was
probably Crayola-deprived as a child and am now making up for it with a
vengence. I know I tend to prefer working most with images that are fairly hard
edged and geometrical. But I only came to these conclusions after a lot a
messing around. And I know my style will change and evolve.
You might want to take a peek at Les St. Clair's homepage.
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Les_StClair/
Les was brave enough to include some of his early work. When compared with his
current stuff, you can easily tell he's come a long way baby.
A word of encouragement.....you may still be wondering "where to go" for a
while.... but.........wherever that is.....being on this list will help you get
there faster. In the mean time....enjoy!!!! Experiment and play.....too much of
life is serious and "specialized" already......
welcome to the chaos of exploration!!!

Hi David!!
Welcome aboard the Fractint Express.
For humorous fractals....may I suggest "the Wasps" by Ralph Vaughn
Williams.....the most tongue-in-cheek funny piece of classical music I can think
of. "Also Sprach Zarathustra" by Strauss and "the Planets" by Holst have got to
have a place for "grand" fractals......
Maybe some Stravinsky for chaos???? I can't stand Schoenberg myself and
fervently hope he is in a h*ll where he is condemned to eternally listen to
polkas.
I think there is a lot of Queen, Allman Bros and Led Zepplin that would be
great......Beatles just seem too structured for fractals....which is why I
disagree with Mozart, Bach or other baroque/classic period composers. A guitar
riff could be sensational with a 15 sec animation.
