I run list myself, it actually on the same server as this list is
(xmission), I have all my lists reject any message over 40k. My
experience is that most lists not mater what the subject will get a
few binaries posted, and often these messages are over 1Meg. Not only
do several people on the list get there mail dumped, but often the
server that is running the list gets backlogged trying to send 500
1Meg files out to all the members.=20
<offtopic>I used to run a UUCP mail server over a 9600 baud modem
and had someone post a 40Meg file over a list. The when I checked the
server to see why mail hadn't been going out I found 400Megs being
sent over the modem. Since then I've always set a limit to the lists I
run. I once posted a 40k file to a list and was ridiculed (back in the
1200 baud days)</offtopic>

I would permanently delete the address from the list. But then again
I'm mean. If its not on the Welcome message (which it should be) maybe
the public ridicule is enough till it is on the Welcome file and
everyone has received a copy. I would still just delete them.

Subject: (fractint) large file problem
Hi folks.
Like you I was blind-sided by a large file that was uploaded to the
list. I was hit worse than you were, because I not only received the
file on the fractint list and the fractint-digest list, but I also
received a number of bounced versions that didn't make it to some
users accounts because of thelarge size. My computer was tied up for
over an hour trying to download all the mail.
First, I will institute an automatic limit on file size so this won't
happen again. My apologies to you all, I thought there already was
such a limit, but apparently majordomo isn't configured that way for
this list. I will change that.
Second, and consider this a very mild rebuke from me, since I
know how irritating this was for folks: it unfortunatley does no
good for list members to post messages saying it is bad to upload
large files, etc. etc. It's even worse to send out an angry message
to all 240 list members. Please leave this to me, because however
much you may want to respond, it is off topic and actually makes the
situation worse by increasing bandwidth. Don't feel bad if you did
this, I understand, and next time you'll know to go for a jog, do
push ups, or whatever else it takes to expend the energy of annoyance
in a way other than via a message to the whole list <grin!>
Third, if you do want to get a large file to the fractint team,
alert me first to see if I want it by private email, then if I
agree, we'll work out a way to get it to me. I'm sure 99% of list
readers know this, but large files should never be sent to anyone,
let alone a list, without permission. Under no circumstances are any
binary files, large or small, to uploaded to the list. And large
files of any description will be automatically excluded shortly, as
soon as reconfigure the list.
Finally, thanks for making this an interesting list. Let's keep it
up. You go back to your fractal discussions, and I'll work on
implementing the file size limit.

Hi.....Here's my version of SpiderM which was really a nice
formula. Some of these are just a different color map of the
same par- I think if you save the whole thing as one .par file and then
run them in numerical order it will be right. ( For some reason
Fractint was giving an error message on the ones with a different
palette but if you hit to continue it gave the correct palette.)

Jack,
I've had very bad experiences with email bombs, spams, viruses, ...etc
through email and mailing lists. So, I think it's about time for me to voice
my anger and thoughts. You will be angry too if someone sent you large files
that took forever to download and waste your precious internet time,
especially if you pay by the hours!!!
Viruses are KILLERS. I'm sure lots of people on here have had some bad
experiences with them in their internet life. I lost my first hard drive due
to a virus. I almost lost my second one. I had an antivirus program, but
still, I got over 2 megs of bad disk sectors. Now I ask you, Jack, would yo
want to fork out over 200 dollars to spend on a hard drive? I believe not.
I'm a nice person, but if I'm pushed too far, I'll break. Everyone has a
break point. But ask yourself, Jack, do you want to buy a new hard drive
because of a virus or spend more money for online time for idiocy such as
large posts?

Subject: (fractint) Length limit
I would like to report what I discovered about file size limits for
this list.
I retrieved the config file for the fractint list, and discovered
that some changes had happened to it, probably when the majordomo at
xmission was reconfigured a while back. The limit for the size of a
message had been 40000 bytes, but was now set to 000. I presume this
effectively disabled the size limit. Thank goodness the file
attachment wasn't 10 mb instead of 800K!
I have reset the size limit to 15000 bytes, which I feel is very
generous for this type of list. The old limit of 40000 seems too high
to me. If anyone has other suggestions for the size limit, please
email me privately.
I now hereby declare the "Great Fractint List Monster File Bomb of
April 1998" to be a dead issue and officially off topic from now on
:-)
Back to fractals, and have fun.
Tim

I know you wanted this privately, but you might wish to up the limit to
maybe 25000 bytes. Here are some of the recent postings and sizes:

I used to post binaries to abpf; I am still undecided whether to continue.
The problem is that each post to abpf generates unwanted spam in response -
a lot of it.

Well, it's not really digested, just a collection of the last postings
since the previous digest was mailed out. I believe that when the
physical size (in bytes) of postings reaches 40000, then they are
gathered together and mailed to those on that List. You may join in the
same way that you got onto this List by sending the words:
subscribe fractint-digest
to the following address:
majordomo@xmission.com
Lately, there have been two mailings per day. It's now up to Number 180
on Volume 01.

Well, if you zoom out of the picture ( hit Z from the image screen, than F6 to
get the corners-screen and than F4 to get the default values) and than use
other option than bof you will see that the image moves to another place on
the screen. If you hold the corners there will be nothing than a mono-colored
screen.

Well, I haven't run MS OSes much since starting to use the Internet, so
I haven't had any. Not a single one. Linux and Linux applications are
designed with an eye to security, and so there isn't this problem.

Subject: (fractint) Xfractint on Linux
Hi,
I'm considering installing Linux (essentially, Unix for PC's) on my
Pentium box. If I do, I'll probably install Xfractint as well. Questions
for the gurus:
1) Will Linux/Xfractint perform any faster than Fractint/Win95?
2) Any features that I may gain or lose with Xfractint?
3) I understand that Linux supports multiple cpu's, whereas Win95 won't.
Will this improve Xfractint's performance?
4) Any other considerations? Like good, freeware auxillary programs?
Secret decoder rings? Free money? :-)
Please don't take this as an invitation to start a Linux/Win95 holy war.
Also, please feel free to email me directly, and I'll sumarize for the
list.
Thanks,
Kerry

From: Tim Gilman <t.gilman@apple.com>
Subject: Re: (fractint) Xfractint on Linux
Hey there,
I'm attempting to port FRACTINT to the Mac, and I've had some experience
with XFRACT. Here's the skinny.
1) XFract won't perform faster than DOS-FRACTINT. DOS-FRACTINT has all
its main algorithms written directly with x86 assembly, hand-tuned over
the years by many people to be fast. The idea of XFract is to make
Fractint available on many differeny unix platforms, and so the original
x86 assembly code was re-written in C to avoid any CPU dependencies.
Compiling the C code into assembly yields code that isn't as fast as the
hand-tuned code.
One thing to consider here is, a programmer should be able to fairly
easily "drop in" the DOS-FRACTINT assembly code into the Linux version of
XFract and get about the same performance.
3) Fractint & XFract aren't multi-CPU aware. Isn't the linux
development team still working on getting linux to work on multiple CPUs?
Thats it!

Hi All
I'm new to Fractint(about 6 months)and have been on the mailing list
for about a week.My biggest problem is that there is so much of it.I'm
overwhelmed.I suppose the answer lies in specialising, but what to specialise
in?I'm not a mathematician or an artist so I can't just say 'Oh if I just
changed that parameter' or 'that would look nice if I zoomed there and used
x.map'.So far I've pottered around with 3D transforms and landscapes, and
messed about with PARs and FRMs from FRACTINT.PAR and FRACTINT.FRM.I've had
the temerity to include a couple.
So hopefully somebody could suggest what I should specialise
in and how I should go about it.
I've included a couple of PAR's,unfortunately the FRM file
somehow got deleted, does anyone recognise it?

Linux has had SMP support for several years in the 2.0 stable series of
kernels. Its SMP support works considerably better than NT's. :)
2.2 (which should be out later this year) has some major improvements
for SMP -- notably, finer-grained locking. 2.0 had a single lock
around the whole kernel. :)
Several Linux device drivers unfortunately have bugs that only show up
on SMP machines.
