Thanks, I think you got 'em all. I looked at the Fractint "Help" files
before I asked, and didn't find the answers. What's the *best* place
to look for detailed info like this? (I assume you'll direct me to a
formula tutorial at Spanky? Or maybe Janet's resource list?)

I quite agree. I live in England and have to pay the phone company
to receive my emails, measured by time taken.
Please don't anyone do that again.

Aren't the sources available at the fractint web site anyways? So why on
earth would anyone post them to the list?!?

The distribution package for fractint v 19.6 contains three formula
tutorials. The first is Bradley Beacham's basic tutorial, which is detailed
and good, but, unfortunately, a bit out of date (it was written several
years ago, and since then there have been many changes in the formula
parser and the state of our collective knowledge on how to write formulas).
The second is Sylvie Gallet's excellent tutorial on PHC and PTC formulas,
which is right up to date. Sylvie's is for the more experienced user. The
third is the tutorial on the new if..else branching instructions introduced
in 19.6.
You can access the formula help in the documentation by going to the
"formula" category in the "Summary of Fractal Types" section of the online
help. There is a hot link there to a parser explanation written by Mark
Peterson, the original author of the formula parser. This section is
marvelous in its brevity, but if read carefully provides an accurate and
helpful digest of important information about the parser.

As you surmised the tutorials mentioned above are also available via www
from spanky at:

I have to pay as well. $10 per month. Small price, but it adds up. Plus the
online charge. I get charged by 30 hour increments, which isn't bad. But I
hate waiting for large posts. Especially those I don't need.
I wonder if there has been a par or frm file that is a meg???

Marie, (and to anyone else I've offended)
Sorry for the flaming. I just had to make it clear to everyone that posting
large files is not good, especially on a mailing list. If he wanted to send
someone the file, send it to the person directly instead of to the mailing
list. I've had bad experiences with them and don't care to see it happen
again. I've had to wait hours before, due to postings like that. I ended up
closing my account, opening a new one, blah blah....and the costs do not
agree with me. I hope this mailing list stays clean from large posts.

Didn't bother me a bit. I'd rather see a dozen flames that take
three seconds each to download and twenty seconds to read
(or two seconds to discard, or longer to cheer or chuckle at)
than one chunk of spam, which is
of no interest to 99% of the list, that takes EIGHT minutes to
download. I have no idea how many are on the list, but
guessing REALLY conservatively at 100, that's 13.3 hours of
wasted time (that's assuming your e-mail doesn't get nuked,
in which case your'e out of business for a day or so while you
thrash things out with tech support). I could download 160
flames in the same time.

The last large file I downloaded was MS Outlook98 while it was free. (It may
still be free.) I found a tool in it to reject any file over an individually
selected number of kb's. I am now taking advantage of it... who'da thunk I
needed it here?<G> I, too, pay per hour.

But I think Majordomo responds to bounces by removing you from the
list, so there may have been more on the list before the mailbombing.
> that's 13.3 hours of wasted time
Remember that not all of us had to download it. I read my mail with
telnet and pine. I didn't even notice it, but when I read other
people's email about it, I got really mad.
Also, I think your modem is kind of slow, since the mail was "only" 1100K.
Regardless, we're talking on the order of $300 in damages from the
download time alone, and that's not even beginning to get into the
damages from having to fix things the mailbomb broke.
It's kind of like smashing someone's windshield to hand them a disk :)

I would like to add that attaching .bat and .exe files, zipped or
otherwise, is quite an irritant also - and not only because of size and
qquestionable usefulness. I view all such as containing a virus when I do
not ask for them, and have so far received at least 3 .bat files from this
list. They were sent with good intentions, but it is much better to post a
short one or two line description inviting those interested to email directly.

Hi Jo,
Well, yes I do, of course, although lately I have been occupied with other
things. I liked your pars very much, for the most part better than my own,
especially jo_man03 and 07. Both of those reminded me of the one I stumbled upon
quite fortuitously last fall. Not knowing at the time that the m-set contained
such julia-like structures, I was astonished to see it. So much so that I checked
to make sure I was working on a type mandel! At that time I undertook to look for
some more. The pars I posted are among those I found then. I have not done
anything more with them, however. You got some very nice results with giving one
or the other of the perturbations a non-zero value. I confess that I have not
experimented with those parameters at all. Perhaps I should.
A question: can you tell me why jo_man03 and 05, as opposed to the others, will
produce a blank screen unless run with bof60 or bof61?

"treyr" may have sent the post through malice, inconsideration or simply
naivete. I ask such people to please exert a modicum of thought
before sending such large postings for they are truly annoying to
the majority of us.
But I also find the above quoted response distasteful and out of
place. I would ask the sender to consider this:
Why would you allow a stranger, for whom you obviously have so
little regard, the power to make you a bitter person? Life is far
too brief to waste it so.

I have both, but rarely use mIRC except when others request it (my
nickname is "Nahee"). Most individuals that I keep up with use ICQ
daily so that is what I need primarily. They are both excellent
products and can do almost exactly the same functions.

Hopefully -- depending on when fractint-digest goes out -- the bombing
can be prevented from reaching those folks.

I liked the idea of filtering out those thingys. I recall seeing a good deal of
information devoted to getting rid of spam at
http://members.xoom.com/sktf/filter.html
Maybe there is something of use for Tim there.

My experience is that people's choice of chat programs tends to be
determined more by the groups of people they want to talk to than by
the technical merits of the chat programs, much as people's choice of
operating systems is usually determined by the applications they want
to run, rather than the technical merits of the operating systems.
This is a shame. It would be much better if the operating systems were
compatible with one another, so that people could switch back and forth
freely; it would be much better if the chat programs were compatible,
too, for the same reason.

The Digest List is based upon Physical size and not quantity of
postings, so I am afraid that the one posting by Turner Rentz caused an
immediate sending of the Volume 01 : Number 178 (with only three
postings).

It is getting late; the following par was generated from Paul Carlson's
CSin_Atan_Julia frm. I do not think this bears any resemblance to anything
I have yet seen posted here, though I have ~ 30^30 pars hanging around in
here I haven't looked at. Anyways...
If I am trespassing on (c) ground here, let me know. And now for the par -
which takes a little time to run:

Subject: (fractint) Pars for the course
Hi Team Fractals:
Here are more designs created with another one of Sylvie's terrific
formulas. Her formulas are my favorites because of their versatility. So
many different styles of artwork can be created from just one formula,
as shown in the accompanying par files.
