Nice images, Gedeon - I particularly like gp-hycj01 and gp-n3w-01.
And yes, I will continue posting formulas.

Damien M. Jones Scribed this here stuff :
Lavondyss,
- Plus you can salvage whatever stuff you have on your diskette and
put it
- on your HD and then format the diskette.
As opposed to salvaging everything on a HD (by backing it up onto tape
or
something) and reformatting the hard drive...? Seems like it's pretty
much
the same process, if you get a sector bad on your hard drive.
Personally I'd trhow the diskette away after moving it's contents
away. The little dears seem to just go all the way bad when they turn
on ya.
I go to some place like Satples or Office Depot and buy tyhe generic
boxes of 100 or 150 diskettes (priced at worst between $30 - $40) and
thusly always have oodles of disks at the ready.
I gotta stop these posts before I get a reputation for being usful and
productive. 8-)

Subject: (fractint) pars from from_jiho1
I wonder if someone can help with this. I was
finding some nice pars in "from_jiho1" The most interesting
one was quite different. I was able to zoom on it and
change it. When I went back later and zoomed out
the new part was completely different and discontinuous.
I went back to the formula and entered all the same corners
and parameters from scratch and was unable to re-create it.
I thought it was quite an interesting image. I sent myself the
par but it is the boring one. I wanted to send the GIF file
as an attachment but it is 64K. Would anyone be willing
to look at it and see where it came from?
Here are the other pars.....

Stone Soup, being a group of volnteers, doesn't have a fixed
schedule. We are currently considering release relatively soon of a
version "20" that has Robin Bussell's fractal evolver. But we might
to wait and continue working on more features.

No.

Subject: (fractint) Matrox Problem
My new puter is up and running and of course the very first program I
loaded was Fractint.....which now lives in a partion of it's very own. I
have version 19.6 and found Sylvie's driver for my Matrox Millennium II
card and it works fine (as do all the other VESA drivers) ....but only to a
point. Pars, formulas, color cycling work but when I load a new color map
the screen turns to icky lines. In order to get a decent image I am forced
to select a video mode again after I load the new color map. Not perfect!!
What to do?? All help is appreciated.
Angela
P.S. Windoze story......
My new motherboard has a SCSI slot and my son couldn't get the internal Zip
drive connected to that slot to work using the Iomega drivers. He gave up
around 12PM Thursday night and I tried my hand last night. Unloaded the
driver he added and asked Winders to "find new hardware"......nada.
OK....re-install the Iomega driver manually as an SCSI
device......nothing...remove it again. Surf to Iomega site on the
web.....where there are lots of questions to answer......is my Iomega drive
plugged into an Iomega something?....don't know....so have to undo cover of
new puter and peer inside. New zip drive is plugged right into the new
motherboard....ok....can now answer that question......back to website for
insight.....a clue!!! If not plugged into an Iomega card there are drivers
provided by the manufacturer of whatever one is plugged
into....ok....desparation time....read the documentation that came with the
board. As can be expected from documentation....it answers every
conceivable question but the one I need.....what driver do I use with
Win95? (that ought to be pretty basic but is missing from 3 booklets).
OK....time to glare at the 4 diskettes that came with the board....load up
first diskette. Nothing......additional glaring required.....ah HA!!!! One
says Win95 (in itty bitty letters) on label....and there...lo and behold is
a win95 folder. Back to Control Panel in Winders......I'm on my way!!! Add
new SCSI device......I HAVE A DISK (smirk).....find that driver....load
it!!! yes...yes.....now...look at the hardware profile....and....nothing.
No SCSI device even though I added it manually. <<<sigh>>>>
Wonder what this big yellow question mark is for (I'm in control
panel...system).....hmmmmmmm.....that mentions SCSI when I click on
it....maybe I can put the drivers there.....let's try.....done......reboot
to take effect.
Ut oh.....the re-boot makes WinDoze go into safe mode.....<<<<another big
sigh>>>>>>> Maybe I should remove what I did......reboot.......and guess
what?????? at the reboot Windows announces that it "found new
hardware"!!!!!!!!! It found the @###ing SCSI slot that I'd been trying to
install for hours!!!! So I guess the manual ought to read.
1. Locate Win95 SCSI driver which is not in any of the documentation that
comes with your board.
2. Try (sucker) to add the driver manually as an SCSI device (gotcha!!).
Windows will refuse to acknowledge it.
3. Change the driver in any other random place where you can find Win95
mention SCSI.
4. Re-boot to find your system is in safe-mode.....but don't
panic....remove the driver.
5. Re-boot and wonder why Win95 Now finds the driver and and your SCSI
slot but be grateful for this "feature" brought to you by Microsnot.

Hey guys and gals,
Just to point out what I think is a really cool picture
posted over in that other list (fractal-art) by Jim Muth.
His Fractal of the Day titled Pink Midget is very nice.
But look here before it is gone!
http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD_Yesterday.html
Gone? Well yes, gone!!! Because when I create it from
the supplied par I get a different picture! Look here...
http://home.san.rr.com/jayrhill/PINK_M2.GIF
My copy has a gray mote around the black midget.
How... er, why does it do this? I think it is neato but
since it is not reproducible, it drops into the mysterious
fractal land of Dr. J.
Speaking of which, check out FotN, there is some
activity again there... :-)

Subject: (fractint) Problem solved
Thanks to those who helped me with my Matrox problem....which is now solved.
Everyone's pars look glorious on a 19" monitor!!!!!
For what it's worth here are my observations on upgrading:
1. Processor speed.......nice but don't put too much money here
2. Motherboard & SCSI - if you are thinking about an internal zip or jaz
or other drive...this is the place to spend bucks.....my new zip drive
screams compared to the parallel port version and is a perfectly acceptable
speed to me for back ups. Also, I'll be able to upgrade easily.
3. Memory.....yup....get lots cause it's fairly cheap. Do be aware that a
hot AGP pent II board like mine (Iwill PIILS) can only accept dimms which
are considerably more expensive than simms. I got 128megs but then I do a
lot of graphics besides fractint. I'd say 64megs is just fine.......I ran
my old puter at 48megs RAM for programs like Bryce 3D and Corel Draw.....no
probs.
4. Zip or other large storage medium......my new internal zip cost $102
OEM. For dedicated fractalers this has got to be the place to spend
bucks.....on storage media for all our neato gifs.
5. Big monitor - I moved from a 14" MAG to a 19" Optiquest....nice....but
a 17" monitor (like I have at work) is fine. Even my 14" is acceptable on
a tight budget.
5. Big monitor's need big video cards....add bucks. My Matrox card was
$269 (but I'm still shopping and can get a rebate at Fry's here in Calif)
6. Modem....56.6 is now the cheapo standard...the advice is to shop for
the features you need....I decided against a fax/modem (saved $50) cause
I've never faxed anything...why bother if you can attach files to an email??
7. CD Rom - ho hum unless one is a gamer......otherwise go for bottom line
at $100 like I did
8. Speakers....up to you if this is important...I listen to music the old
fashioned way on a sound system
9. Sound card.....see comment #8.....
Shopping tip.....you can get zip cartridges at
http://www.mcglen.com/McGlenWeb/home.asp
on sale for $9.95 each currently. JAZ cartridges are $75

You've lost part of the colour info in your par.
Compare the two images, hit "E" and look at the palettes. Yours has mostly grey
squares!
I suspect that you've saved your par from a web browser and it's chopped out
all of the statements enclosed in angled brackets, i.e. <gone!>. See the correct
version below.

Subject: (fractint) textsafe makes things worse...
I, like alot of users, have Win95 (OSR1, 4.00.950a) and haven't "yet"
upgraded the memory in my system so when I ALT-TAB between programs
under GUI-Mode and go back to FRACTINT I get the ugliest-freakiest
images. It's been damn disapointing sometimes especially since I ran
one of the PAR setting that just plain choked my old 486 slc-33mhz
system with it's blazing 4 meg O' 30 pin-simm RAM. I've since added
the TEXTSAFE thingy in and it locked my system up completely (ever had
an engine sieze up on you folx, "that" kind of lock-up) and when I hit
<RESET> the system spent a handsome amount of time repairing the
<registry> and so booted up way slow, worked OK afterwards though. I
can't use "textsafe" and a new video card is far from likely. I just
can't afford one right now. Why would this happen this way? (the
video miscue that is)
My vid card is a Phoenix Trio 32/64 with 2 meg of RAM, not expandable.
my system is a 6x86 120Mhz (no MMX) w/ 16 meg EDO, and I run FRACTINT
at SF7 (1024x768x256).
Any suggestions?
BTW the "textsafe" is not still in my sstools.ini file.
Perplexed and Addled

I don't claim to be a bright programmer - and I haven't looked through
much of the source but surely the only reason it's "lossy" is that the
compression has a tolerance on it - If you take out the diffmag!=1 on
line 1000 then surely you would loose the problems (I haven't tried it
though). Although this could make the entries in the Pars much longer,
so you might want an option on it so that you could either have it
"super-accurate" or not quite perfect (as it is now). I guess that the
reverse process would be unaffected if you changed this.
Michael.

I give you high marks for having a look! Thanks! However, this is the
result:
Old lyapunov map encodes this way:
colors=000zk0<253>000
With your change it is:
colors=000<3>zk0<250>000
As you can see, the result is visually very different.
I'm sure Sylvie will argue with me, and maybe come up with a
counterexample, but if you load the PAR form of Lyapunov.map and
compare it with the original, it looks to me like no color differs by
more than 4. (On a VGA, 4 out of 256 is the smallest possible
difference.) If this is always true, I'd say the inaccuracy is no big
deal.
However, if you have other suggestions, I'd be happy to try them, and
even send you an exeutable with your suggestions implemented.
I noticed that diffmag is tested later on. In fact there's even an
error message saying "Tell Tim Wegner to check diffmag" so I must
have looked at this once :-) The colors code has been there for a
very long time.
If you (or someone else) wants to pursue the study of the colors
compression algorithm more we should move the conversation to the
developer's list since the traffic here is high. If anyone is
interested please send me an email.

Hi All
I don't think the interest that Bob expressed is just what I have found,
but I seem to have a knack for getting into strange happenings.
In Carr3402 I can only run the formula once without starting Fractint from
scratch. Interrupting and restarting, zooming, or what have you, and you
get Error(4) and Error(2). It is always at the same point in the color
data. The indicator points to the ` in the sequence <3>`Fw<7> . I know
that sometimes the parser shows an error without showing a location, but
this is always definitely the same point.
I have compared the before and after parameter files and they are
identical. Splitting off the color data and using it to recolor an image
done in default colors works the same way, use it once. I have heard of one
time ciphers but never a one time color file. All I can think of is that
some obscure flag gets set, although I can't imagine it's purpose. Is there
some way to store an image of the actual running program? Anything I can
get my hands on is unchanged.
Along with the discussion of color accuracy I thought that this should get
tossed into the pot. The ` seems to be a perfectly acceptable symbol for
the color data.
Charles

I tried to resize the view window while the par was generating - always works -
and the same thing happened. Very nice images though.

Well, we have a Diamond Stealth 64 Series 2000 with the
S3 Trio chip, on a P133 w/96MB EDO, run Fractint at SF7.
We use TEXTSAFE=save. It doesn't lock up, but the W95 and
the Fractint graphic screens corrupt each other.
Works fine under OS/2, so I suspect it's a W95 and/or
driver problem.
