Subject: (fractint) sstools again
I think I may be closing in on this problem. Nick Grasso suggested
that I delete the old file and type in an altogether new one. I did so and
I think I can tell that the new one is being read and responded to by the
computer. It has skipped the credits and gone straight to the Mset image.
BUT
I get a screen, instead of the credits that says..."Oops. I couldn't
understand the argument:
Recordcolors=yes
(see the start-up help screen or docs. for a complete argument list
with descriptions.)"
I checked the Help screen and could find nothing there that could help.
I checked back in Jack Valero's list of sstools (which I had used
as a template - and still use it) and my list differs from his - I have
recordcolors=yes, where Jack has recordcolors=C.
I also checked wizzles list which she included in some advice, and
she has recordcolors=yes. You can see that I borrowed from bothe Angela and
Jack liberally - but I'm sure both of their files work correctly w/o the
interruption.
So, I'm at a loss. (Again. I'm getting used to it with computers -
but loving every minute of time I spend at the monster.)
Any suggestions?
Ray

From: Mark Christenson <mchris@hooked.net>
Subject: (fractint) Best formula, pars, etc.
comment{ commentary and pars (c) Mark "Bud" Christenson 4/9/98
My, my. All of these gyrations over best fractals, copyrights, and
so on. One of the advantages of being too busy to frac and flack
for a time is the ability to tie together a number of themes in one
post.
First, a salvo on copyright (please don't spam me with that *.zip,
Linda! I promise to be brief.) While nobody but God owns the
abstract mathematical object, once it has been cropped and
colored it is a unique creation of the artist. And, although it may
seem like a technicality, getting there first *does* count. If only
the same rules applied to patents; unfortunately, exclusive patent
rights expire after a number of years (just ask Philo T. Farnsworth,
Nicola Tesla, and other patent victims).
Second, picking up the "best formula" thread...
One could argue, on a number of counts, that the classic z^2
Mandelbrot set is the hands-down winner. It's elegant (there's
that word again!) in its simplicity, infinite in complexity, perfectly
self-consistent (whatever *that* means) and "pure" in a way
I can't quite put into words (but I think you know what I mean).
More than that, the damn thing's ubiquitous: there's no escaping
it! ;o) (More on that later.)
That said, let me say this. I've never had a relationship that
lasted more than six years, so I can't relate to the boredom issue.
However, after staring down the yawning maw of the M-set beast
for 12 years, I can honestly tell you I wouldn't still be doing fractals
without "getting some strange" occasionally.
Third, I just wanted to let y'all know I haven't totally forgotten the
original gravijul; I still do a little exploration now and then with the
aid of gravibrot.
Now, to tie the threads together (rather neatly, I think)...
Here are a couple more places *I* got to first (AFAIK).
Last night and early this morning I did a little spelunking in the
gravibrot cave and came up with a couple of gems. First, the
discovery of another gravibrot harboring Mandel-midgets (no
main figure this time). I wasn't surprised to find one in the
ident/exp/log case, but log/cos/log? Who would have guessed?
gb181 also features z^4 midgets in the corners. Second, "Shred",
another cool gravijul, found via gravibrot (but not without some
tweaks).
Finally, totally off the subject, a plea to the Fractint gods: could
we find some way in v20.0 to create links from formula 'brots to
their Julias via the spacebar toggle? Maybe something like a
par entry (i.e. "julia=gravijul" and "z=pixel")?
All for now, Bud

Nope. I have Windoze 95 on the c: drive and Fractint on the f: drive.
Partitioning for different operating systems is your decision; I have no
comment on the matter other than I find no problem in using Fractint
under Windows 95 after clicking on the MS-DOS icon in the Fractint
folder.

Thanks for the kind words. This is 0 for 2 for me. My first query to the
list was for help in slowing down the color cycling on my machine at home.
(It's literally dizzingly fast, downright unwatchable). Apparently it's my
video card, STB Nitro 3D. No help here. I next emailed Ray because he
said he had success editing his sstools. ini file, but apparently he's
still as flumoxed as I am.

I have Fractint in two separate partitions. I keep the basic version (19.6)
on one partition, and my expanded version in a separate partition with the
added frms and pars that I've collected over the years.
In this way, I can run my own pars through the basic version to see if I
need to add the formula to the par when I want to send it to someone.
I know there are easier ways to do this, but hey, it works for me.

Probably THIS is off topic.=20
1. Does anyone know some website where I can obtain long time series. I =
need them for my master thesis and further research about chaos theory =
and applications. Long means very long , like 30 yrs or something about =
this size . The kind of observed phenomenon doesn't matter, but =
basically I'm looking for some society and economy related series.
2. Anybody knows a list concerning chaos theory (particulary NOT applied =

Subject: (fractint) Lotsa questions
I promise that before long my questions will slow to an occasional -
"query!"
It would help so much if I could get answers to the following:
1 - How do I save incoming pars to the computer? (I print them out now.)
2 - If I am able to save them to the computer, then, how do I get them to my
operating table in order to use them.
3 - Do I have to create a special file with a special file name to save
colormaps - or does the command in the sstools file do it auto?
4 - Is there a way to print my subdirectory par file list, the one with the
names I have given them, the ones under the gen'l heading, "Parameter Set
Selection" page,(a long list). When I hit p (the only explanation I can
find in the Help List) I get a small box at the bottom of the screen which
says "Speed key string.." with a pink p and flashing cursor. That list
pops down to just below the alphabetical letter of O, so I presume it has
something to do with speeding a run through the list, and does not refer to
the printing at all.
5 - I entered a command in my sstools file that was recommended in the docs as
being a good place to put your printer info for the benefit of DOS. I
entered it thusly: PRINTERTYPE=Lexmark 1020 ColorFine2 at LPT1. Correct? If
that is the name of my printer, which it is?
6 - (I've lost his name, darn it) A poster said in a message that it was easier
and quicker to get to the Notepad of Windows by hitting ALT+Enter. Is this
so? And from what screen should it be typed?
There now! Done!! (for now - >:( )
If anybody would be good enough to tackle all or any of the above
I'd be very grateful. Thanks
Ray

Subject: (fractint) Julia spheroids formula
comment {
This formula, like the 3D_Balls formulas, creates images with
balls (or spheroids). The 3D_Balls formula was designed
especially for Msets - the balls surround the midgets so
the midgets can be seen. The present formula was designed
especially for Julia sets - when used with Msets the balls
are centered on the midgets so they can't be seen, but when
used with Julia sets they fill in the Julia sets better and
they involve a lot less computation.
The "dragon" pars below create Julia sets where each "arm"
of the dragons consists of balls of the same color. This
is because the two that use eight color ranges are located
near period-8 bulbs and the one that uses four color ranges
is located near a period-4 bulb. All three locations were
chosen to give the arms a nice "backwards" twist.
This formula uses the classic Mandelbrot set equation but
I suspect it will probably work well with other equations.
