James,
Possible solution -- open the Fractint Folder and find the Fractint.cgf
file -- you should be able to open it with notepad or your text editor
- -- scroll down to SF7 and in the column under mode change it to read 427
instead of 27, then save and run the program and see if that corrects the
problem. You can also change SF5, and SF6 to 427 also in the same column
This is the complete row after the change is made:
SF7 ,SuperVGA/VESA Autodetect , 0, 0, 0, 0, 427,1024, 768,256,Works
with most SuperVGA
Remove the textsafe statement from the sstools file.
Good luck.
Earl Simpson

Just compare the green components of colors #193 and 194:
original par

Your problem has nothing to do with the color data. Run one on Bob's
pars again and enter the <z> screen: it shows the par entry instead of th=
e
formula. You can bypass this bug by putting the formulas and the pars in=
two separate files or, if you want to keep them in the same file, by
renaming the pars.
This bug has been fixed in the developers version.
Cheers,
- Sylvie

Subject: (fractint) Missing Data?
I was mucking about yesterday (when I should have been outside enjoying the
spring weather) loading some of the par files posted to the list this past
week (first one I tried waas Ray's EyeDome - ho hum, says I, amusing but not
amazing, and then I color-cycled it - WOW! Check it out, folks) and thought
I might put up one I did a while back.
So I saved off the par file and loaded it back and all I saw was the original
plasma cloud image, not the ant-enhanced image I saved as a GIF. I also
created a new one from scratch and got the same results. So.... (drum roll)
is the ant automata modification something that's not written to the par
file? If so, are there other fractint "doodads" that don't get written (3D,
starfield, stereogram, etc?) Or am I just not doing something properly?
Thanks,

Hi Jay,
I have had this happen to me a few times and thought I must have gone
crazy. Well, now I know that if in deed I have slipped over the deep
end, I am not alone. I had two or three fractals that, when I first
generated them, they had the grey. When I called the pars up on a later
date and regenerated them, I got white I think. And the sad thing is
the gray was the right color in my mind, so now the fractals don't look
right, even though I changed the white to some other color.

2. I've been messing around with Bud's gravibrot formula and got some good
stuff....and I thought it deserved some new color maps. The maps with the
pars below are variations on an excellent map which is particularly suited
to busy images or where you want some drama. If anyone would like my full
set of variations, please let me know. For those who want to try modifying
my maps.....leave the black bands and that darkest gray area alone and
change the other colors to suit.

Subject: (fractint) Jay's Questions
Many eons ago Jay Hill posted some questions in the
Fractal of the Night. I have been poking through these at
a glacial pace and hope I have an understanding of some
of it. Sorry about the length of this- I'll just quote the
questions and one of the formulas at the end, and if
there is interest I can repost the whole thing, or you can find
them on Jay's web site for the March 10 and 11 F.O.T.N.

> in this fractal?
As it is iterated, if it "escapes" into one of the basins of attraction
of one of the 6 roots it receives one of 6 colors based on the
closest root. The little midgets are the "non-escapers", just like
in the classic Mandelbrot. There are midgets there because the
initial value of w was set to a critical value.
(solve f'' = 0, get w = 2A/3).
(I have trouble following exactly what is being iterated here-
and what the test for "escape" is.
I think w is being iterated first and when delta w is less than p1
a main color group is chosen based on which root it is closest to.
Then the color bands within the group are chosen by putting the
difference of the angles of the last 2 orbits into the z equation.)
( If delta w is never less than p1 is that
when you never get "escape" so you never go
into the "z" part of the formula and so that point is
part of the midget?)

ignored, are the little midgets

Maybe you can change the position of the midgets by changing p1.
Eveything else is more or less fixed. If you change the roots it's a
different formula. If you change initial w from the critical value
you probably lose the midgets. Changing p1 changes the
(|delta w|<p1) which seems like the test for escape.
The contours in this fractal are like Paul Carlson's orbit traps.
Rather than set a color depending on the number of iterations
it takes to escape to infinity, the colors are based on the angle
of how close the final iteration comes to one of the roots.
(see Paul Carlson's "Pseudo-3D and Orbit Traps" from3-14)
I have trouble following most of the details of the
formula. c=pixel means it is basically a Mandelbrot,
and after that a Newton method is used. I am trying
to understand the initialization and bailout first. Why
z = iter = bailout = 0? How can bailout be 0?
Then later it says that bailout is 1.
The first formula:

I think that the answers to many of Jay's questions can probably be
found in the book,

I used this book extensively in developing my Newton Mset rendering methods.
I don't know if the book is still in print - I haven't seen it in the

Subject: (fractint) New down-load?
I've been running v19.3 Fractint for two years now. It has been
suggested that it is about time that I down-loaded the newer v19.6. (Isn't
that the latest version?) I would like to, but it presents such a problem
to my scant knowledge that I am somewhat reluctant to do so. On top of
which, I MAY get a new rig before too much longer and wonder if it makes
sense to down-load now, or wait till I get the new computer.
If it makes sense to get the newer version now, (I may not even get
a new computer) so that at least I have it, and even if I do get a new
computer, it may be a while - so at least I'd be breaking in on it and be
readier when the new computer was up and running.
And, above all, I don't know the procedures for this down-load.
I've down-loaded before, (even a 50 or so page data-base of Van Gogh that I
wanted). But this is different. Must I remove my OLD Fractint before I
down-load the new one? If I do, what do I do with all my personal
treasure-trove (OK, junk to you - but they're "mine, all mine!!!") of images
and pars and formulas and all like that? So I'm dumb. What can I do but ask?
Does any of this make sense to anybody? Would appreciate some
advice and suggestions.
Thanks
Ray

Subject: (fractint) Colorful Mandelbrot Squares Formula
comment {
This formula uses the same rendering method as my Shields_Mset
formula except that this formula uses the classic Mandelbrot set
equation insted of a series, and uses very bright colors.
