I don't wanna get too deep and serious but don't you think that spy films and
spy serials helped define - together with millions of other things - the
zeitgeist, the spirit of an era (50's-'60s)? I mean, many people learnt - in
the most dramatically distorted way - of "orientals", "arabs", "communists" and
other seemingly "dangerous" subjects through The Man from UNCLE or Mission
Impossible, those serials - together with Bond, Flint films etc. - helped build
our most exotic and racist imagery. Shouldn't we bless this Space Age Pop
Revival for enabling us to open our eyes and contextualize Exotica, Lounge,
Crime Jazz, Spy etc. in a - hopefully - more correct way? When I was writing my
book "Mondo Exotica" I interviewed Martin Denny on this subjects and his reply
was enlightening: "My music has always been like fiction, no authenticity; I
only wanted to suggest how African music might sound". Wow, then I realized how
important was to get to another level of understanding, how the very essence of
Les Baxter's "Ritual of the Savage" was - maybe - a musical/political travel
into the darker, most stereotyped conscience of Usa. Ever thought of that?
Back to sounds: I love spy music - like many of you - and I'm a big collector
of spy soundtracks, especially Italian sub-007 films (gee, I'm Italian). My
latest purchase is The Swingle Singers' soundtrack for Operazione S. Pietro
(Operation St. Peter's, 1968): unbelievable. As a nice starter for
Italo-cinespies lovers I would suggest Our Man from R.O.M.E. (Ceraton, issued
in Germany).
Ciao,
Francesco Adinolfi

Subject: (exotica) Godzilla/Mothra music
For whoever is interested in Toho monster movie music, this is pretty much a definitive site about the music that is available on CD.
http://www.idsi.net/larryt/Godzilla/godzilla8.htm
This link takes you to the Mothra soundtrack page. These are not the easiest CDs to find however, due to the "cult" of Godzilla and such, they are instantly collectable. I love the Peanuts. My favorite compilation is Mothra The Best 1961-1998, which has music from all the Mothra films except for the recent Mothra 3, and a number of different Peanuts songs. It also has a few of the drumming songs specifically from Mothra 1961.
Honestly everything you could need to know about the soundtracks is covered on this site, including English translation of Japanese titles and such.
