That's quite a statement, although I'm more puzzled at the thought of
finding cutting edge avant-garde theatre in the City that places "culture"
on a level all of its own. Nonetheless, I have to admit I have yet to
listen to GSYBE though their CDs (and beautifully packaged LP versions) are
readily available here. I actually first heard about the from a friend in
Germany so their popularity in Europe is certainly not exaggerated.
For me, the most memorable performance art event was some dozen years ago
at our Jazz Festival in Montreal where a French group called Urban Sax did
an outdoor performance which began by a group of them in space suits
scaling down the side of the building behind the stage and others parading
through the crowd in a souped up space vehicle. Their movements resembled
Butoh dancers as they increased in numbers. This was a group of some 50+
saxaphonists led by Gilbert Artman. The lighting and mood combined to made
this a performance to remember for some time. Of course I doubt anything
could quite live up to one of those Hermann Nitsch "Aktions" where animal
blood and carcasses are strewn all over the place... Then of course
there's the ineffable GG Allin...

We have both original and new versions and have had them all for some time.
I agree with Allan that the original of Jesus Blood is more effective than
the new version. Other than the familiar Tom Waits voice at the end, I
don't think the additional duration of the new version improves it. Maybe
a confirmed Tom Waits fan would say otherwise...
As far as Sinking of the Titanic goes, I actually prefer the newer one
which was recorded in an abandoned water tower (how's that for acoustical
ambiance!) and has an even more eerie feeling to it than the original. The
reason both of these were remade rather than reissued is that the originals
were limited in time duration and therefore compromised by the technology
of the day that being the LP.

Actually the best of the lot is the most difficult to find! It's called
"Sound Shopping" by Arling, Cameron & Swarte and was issued as a signed
artists edition. It cost me a whopping CDN$42 (plus tax!) and I only saw
one other copy offered for sale here, in the same store after we bought
ours. I heard there was a an unsigned version available at a lower price
but had never seen it. Its on the very remarkable Basta label and actually
was the first thing on the label we bought, back in the days before it was
properly recognized and distributed in North America. There are also a few
early 12"s and mini CDs that were equally difficult to come by. The newer
and better known releases are all still quite good but none has ever
matched Sound Shopping for quirkiness (a favourite quality of any music I buy!)

I've seen Laurie live, and I like her stuff too, but the BMG simply "Blue" her
away, IMNSO. I'm a critic and a cynic by nature, so I'm not prone to gush about
things unless they have a really tremendous impact on me.

No more puzzled than I was. The show I attended was only about 2/3 full, so I
think that a lot of the Lost Vegans don't get it. However, one of the beauties of
their performance is how accessible it is to everyone. I've seen a fair amount of
performance art and most of it smacks of intellectual snobbery.

I'd woulda paid good money to see him duet with the Rat Pack at the Flamingo...

Don't you just love it when record dealers are scrupulously honest? Maybe
"honest" isn't the right word. The guy wanted $14 for this record called
"Luciano plays the Monkees" which is, I believe, by Lucien Hetu. It's a
pretty cheesy instrumental organ record with covers of ONLY Monkees songs.
And it must be an official release of some kind because there's a Monkees
photo and logo on the back.
He wanted 14 dollars and it was partly because it was in perfect shape.
On the other hand, he only asked 5 dollars for the Johnny Cool soundtrack
which is now playing. This is what I call in "very good shape" because
there are very few moments with a snap, crackle or fuzz. And when it
comes, it doesn't disturb me much. For me, this is about as good as it gets.
But he told me to check out the condition and admittedly it doesn't LOOK
perfect.
"That would be a lot more if it was mint", he said.
"Mint shmint" I say.
This is also the guy who only charged me five (or was it seven?) for that
"Monsters" LP.
I never used to go to this store partly because it's out of the way but
also because it's a "collector's store" but now that I'm onto this quality
over quantity kick, I think I'll make it a regular stop.
Oh and in case you had to ask, yes I had no choice but to buy that Monkees
record, even at that price.

Alan, Alan, that Lucien H=E9tu joue les Monkees used to be everywhere for 25=

Qu=E9b=E9cois easy listening music. It is the best of several dozen Lucien=

But, now that you mention it, it doesn't turn up so easily any more, and=20
maybe $14 is about right. On the other hand, the one I have is entitled=20
"Lucien H=E9tu joue les Monkees," which leads me to believe that "Luciano=20
plays the Monkees" is an attempt to downplay the Quebecness of it and reach=

an Anglophone market. And the French version does have photos on front and=
=20
back, but they're so obviously cut and pasted in that they don't, to me,=20

I'll start buying up any I see.

All this talk of disco last week makes me want to mention my best score on
my recent trip to Spain, a 1976 French/African disco record. Band called
'Black soul' and the records 'Bingo Fiesta'. With titles like 'Dakar sound',
'Indian music' and 'Moog groove' on it, I didn't find it that hard to fork
out a couple of hundred pesetas.
The track 'Dakar sound' particularly rocks, sounds utterly contemporary.

Talk of African Disco brings to mind my favorite sometimes funk
sometimes African Disco artist, Manu Dibango. A instrumental song
of his called Choc 'n Soul still rocks my world after all these
years. Its on the "Ambassador" lp/cd. The "Gone Clear" album has
another stellar disco African song called Goro Goro City. "Afrique
Sans Freak" is a third great 8 minute African Disco song by him. We
have played all of these on Mardis Gras day in our Carnaval Parade,
Mondo Kayo.
From Zaire give me Diblo Dibala and Matchacha or Kanda Bogo Man

Besides Sound Shopping I really like "Music for Imaginary Films"
Which is available at cdnow, use a http://www.i.am/deardeer $2 off

at least I think I got my copy there. Other Music also should have
it. They also have remixes of some songs. Deardeer also has

I also liked "All In" but not nearly as much as Music From
Imaginary Film or Sound Shopping.

I don't think they have any copies of "Soundshopping" left, though -
they only got a few in, and we bought one, and Chuck obviously bought

Any pointers will be helpful as I rebuild my collection!

A list-member was kind enough to burn me a copy of this two-fer. "Tropical
Fantasy" for the most part lives up to its reputation. Magne's
"Tabu"/"Taboo" is a fantastic and has to be one the most psychedelic Exotica
tunes out there. "Bahia" is also great.
One odd thing:
I notice the track listing on the Markko Polo disc is slightly out of
sequence. Using RCA's Space Age Pop series as a reference, I see that "Rain
In Rangoon" is listed as track 3 but appears on track 2. "The Girlfriend Of
A Whirling Dervish" and "Scheherazade" also appear one track ahead of what
is listed. Are all copies like this? If so, can anyone post a corrected
track list?
Thanks...

I'd recommend the vinyl compilations Surfer's Mood. Lots of very...moody

At least in the Bay Area.
Also like another contemporary group, The Huntington Cads Go Exotic.
The Ventures lone surf guitar record is quite good.
Check out the Del-Fi comps - that's a good way to replace the original early

["Run for Life"] not the one that goes Huh Huh ["Miserlou"]," he'll request.

I just came across the Tornadoe's "Telstar" 45. The b-side is an
surf-exotica tune called "Jungle Fever". Pretty good. What other
surf-exotica stuff is out there? Any good comps?
Some asshole(s) broke into my apartment last week and, among other things,
ran off with all of my surf CDs. (They also took all of my rare
Tindersticks stuff and Morricone soundtracks!) I think I recall the
Astronaut's doing a decent version of "Bali Hai". I can't recall if it was
exotica-oriented.
Any pointers will be helpful as I rebuild my collection!
Thanks...

There was a four-CD box set called "Cowabunga" released by Rhino that has a
LOT of good stuff on it and will probably direct you towards some more gems.
There's also a New Dimensions "Best Of" CD put out by Sundazed (some cool,
sadly unrated surf) that's worth checking out. Lively Ones are also good
(you may want to check out their "Best of" - also on Sundazed? - if you're
unfamilar with them), Man or Astroman? (esp. the pre-99 stuff) do some grand
sci-fi surf, early Phantom Surfers are good, and though it's more Surf Pop
(i.e. closer to Beach Boys than Dick Dale) try to hunt down the Pebbles Vol.
4 comp. CD which has some nice tuneage on it.
Also, if you ever see a volume (I forget which one) of What Surf with the
"Pandoras IV", pick it up even if it's for that track alone, because it
features (the original lineup?) Pandoras doing a great surf tune. Too bad
they didn't crank out any more surf before sliding into hard rock schlock...

(I think). I'm wondering if this is a "first pressing" because the album =
jacket is one of those "fold over" jobs where the edges of the front cover =
fold over-top of the back cover piece to create the entire LP jacket. The =
front is slicked down with some type of glossy top coat.
>Yes? No?
Not necessarily - this almost certainly just means this is a UK pressing of
the album rather than a US one.
