Someone on in the luxuriamusic chat room (The Millionaire I think) said that
the masters of the Diabolik soundtrack were lost in a fire.  They have
played a piece on luxuria which is a montage of music and dialoque collected
off the laserdisc.  Maybe this is the same as the boot?

Meanwhile, you can catch the Italian version of "Deep Down" on Bear Family's
Canto Morricone:  The 60's Vol. 1.  Great album!

I just saw the re-release of Exorcist last night and would like to take this
back.  The music in the original is pretty effective after all!  I even

We can only hope this mix gets picked up by a decent record company and
released..It has all the exotica and latin elements on top of beats and phat
bass...JB/not just saying this because I am friendly with B.Cleve. This IS a

I'd doubt that SPAMmers are getting your names off of this mailing list. It's
much more likely that they're being culled from postings to external newsgroups
or else they're buying them from sites that you visit. If you want to prevent
99% of this type of address thievery, just insert some nonsense characters into
your address. For example, I could change my address thusly:

[e-mail]
to
mj[dieSPAMboy!][e-mail]

Anybody with any Internet smarts will figure out that they need to remove the
stuff in the braces to reply to you. Anyone not smart enough to figure it out is
probably not somebody you wanted to hear from anyway!

It's also a good idea to turn off your browser's ability to download cookies
from visiting sites. Cookies are small programs that sit on your hard drive and
send info back to the originating site (sometimes a totally different site than
the one you're visiting). If you do a lot of shopping on the Web at sites like
Amazon or Yahoo, you may have to turn them back on while you do your ordering.

AOL has pretty strict anti-SPAM policies, so I think it's safe to assume that
your privacy is not being violated by them.  But be wary of any sites like eBay
that asks you to create a login and a password. Make sure that they have a clear
statement that indicates that they will not sell your email address to other
companies before you join.

Also, there are also companies that secretly download what's called spyware to
your system. Spyware snoops on what you are looking at on the Web and reports
that info back to the company. Netscape and RealPlayer are infamous for larding
their freeware with snooping programs. You can get some de-spying software from
this site. I ran their program and found 36 different spyware programs running
on my system. Yikes!

Since I started the anti-Broadway rant I have to agree you are right here.
I think at least in  my case it was having to go through the production of
these things back in high school that left me with such a bad
impression.  Still I'd take Dixieland Jazz over most Broadway if push came
to shove.  As for the gnome, I still think he had talent in his early days
and his early works bordered on genius. But then I can say the same for
Michael Nyman!

Now this explains perfectly my hate for New Age. As a  former space music
person I began to get deeply disturbed having to look in the New Age
sections of stores for the likes of Klaus Schulze, Cluster, etc.  I've
since lost interest in space music but I think now the offerings in New Age
sections are more consistently of the material I would have never
liked.  And don't let Eno off so lightly.  Those first records of his are
among the most innovative of the entire rock/pop era and they still sound
as fresh today as they did in the early 70's.  I did read his book and yes
the progression is understandable but what I shame is all I can say!  He
almost came back to life in the 80's with Nerve Net though...

Wish I'd have known!  We threw out some 1200 of these things at McGill this
past summer, mostly fixed ones from auditoria but also tablet arm and
freestanding models, in yes, aqua and orange. The University went on fast
track classroom cleanup binge of sorts. We actually looked at repairing
them but I was told by our local Herman Miller dealer that they were no
longer in the auditorium or classroom seating business and could not supply
us with parts or replacements so...  If you happen to find yourself in
Montreal I'm sure I could still find you a few of the fibreglass souvenirs
to take home!

I'm a Tindersticks fan too. I'm still kicking myself for not seeing them
when they played Toronto after their second album (probably their best).

They're consumate pros these guys. A class act all the way. However, they're
not without their flaws, at least to my ears. Does anyone else out there
find some of their songs downright insipid, particularly on the 3rd lp?
There are a couple of duet tracks that I just can't listen to. And there are
other tracks that approach this sort of 'heartfelt delicacy' that I think
miss the mark completely.

They're great but not 100% of the time (who is?).

I saw "Godspeed You Black Emperor" perform live in an old Toronto movie
theater last Thursday and it was absolutely mesmerizing. They're a Montreal
band -- or really a loosely strung together musician's collective - of about
9 members, though only 7 performed at the show: 3 guitarists, a violinist, a
cellist, bassist, & drummer. There are no vocals, except for the odd (very
"odd") sample here and there. Because they have little stage presence
(they're all seated) the visual dimension is taken up by the film playing
behind them on the movie screen: scratched film, found footage, coloured
shapes etc. all woven together - it looked great. The music is sort of a
"Saucer Full of Secrets" era Pink Floyd-meets-Wagner-meets-Steve
Reich-meets-Tortoise. Its very spatial, architectural even, and it moves
from the very soft to the very loud like a Doppler effect. It's druggy
sit-down music, entirely suited to a theater, and it sounds like nothing
I've heard these days. No irony, no tongue-in-the-cheek, no posturing, no
histrionics, just a deadly serious, and GREAT listening experience.
One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

I think they have a big following in the U.K. so it might be easier to see
them there, rather than on this side of the Atlantic. But besides the big
Canadian cities, I'm sure they'd play places like San Fran or New York.

They're definitely worth seeing, anyone on this list would love 'em I'm
sure.

Barry Lipman is odd. He's done a lot of arranging for pop stars. From what I've heard, both the Star Maidens soundtrack and his track on Strassenfeger, he's kind of in between Peter Thomas and Gert Wilden (for ease of reference.) While I like Star Maidens, I'd say in reference to the aforementioned composers, there are other albums I'd reach for more often. You might really like it though. I don't know what his other stuff is like though. I have a feeling there's a huge stylistic spread with him. If you want, I wrote a review of Star Maidens, maybe that will help you more, though sometimes Dusty Groove will do albums justice with their descriptions. When I go in there, I've never walked away with something I didn't like.

I'd been doing a bit of research on this a long time back. What I was told from a few sources is that the master tapes had been destroyed in a fire in a garage. So while you may be able to find the theme song on a 45 or what have you, there's nothing else. It's really sad too, as this soundtrack seems to be a bit of a holy grail for Morricone fans. I've been hoping for a while that perhaps Morricone might bother to recreate the soundtrack and release it. Anyone have any Morricone connections out there? Maybe he has no idea how badly people want this soundtrack.

Christy's "Deep Down" track from the "Danger: Diabolik" soundtrack
can be heard in the Irma's "Arriva la bomba - The Easiest Party Of
The Year" reissue compilation.

No but I know that Jesus Blood was originally done on vinyl and then redone
and rereleased on CD because it allowed him to do what he originally
wanted, which was keep it going.
(And I can copy the Jesus Blood one for you....)

If you like avant-garde bands performing in front of scratchy films, I'd
strongly recommend catching San Francisco's Clubfoot Orchestra sometime. Try to
see them when they're performing their original soundtrack to the silent film
"Cabinet of Dr. Caligari". Perfection. They captured the film's spirit of German
Expressionism to an ⁿmlaut.

However, the best performance art ensemble that I've ever seen would have to be
Blue Man Group. Their show works on so many levels that I'm pretty sure they're
Not Of This Earth. I went to see them at the Luxor Casino in Vegas last spring
while I was working a broadcasting trade show. Stunning tribal rawk, art, and
comedy melded with a sense of the bizarre that Laurie Anderson can only achieve
in her dreams.

The "Jesus Blood Nere Failed Me Yet" has a 1975 version and then the new 74 minute version with Tom Waits in the last track is from 1993.

JLNFMY did not impress me but I'm trying it thanks to your comments.

The "Sinking of the Titanic" has a 1975 recorded version and the new version is from 1994.

I'm sure the older ones are different than the newer one. Mr Bryars likes to as he says in the linear notes to Titanic "Althought I conceived the piece many years ago I enjoy finding new ways of looking at the material in it and welcome opportunities like the present recording to look at it afresh."

The only other CD I have of his is the "A Man In A Room Gambling" which has 5 5 minute pieces where Spanish artist Juan Munoz talks about how to cheat at cards. And were created for the BBC. And the CD is rounded off with some nice "ambient" pieces.

I just looked up Bryars in Napster and noticed an "Aphex Twin" remix of "Sinking of the Titanic"....It's over 8 minutes long. Anyone know anything about the Apex Twins?

The original lp was "The Sinking of the Titanic" [Obscure Records Obscure
No. 1] 1975.

I much prefer the version of "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet" that is on
this album. The version with Tom Waits isn't nearly as effective.

it never fails to impress.
i was talking about the Amanda Lear (which i already found on macster)
and the "Destruction" by Belle Epoque which is still a mystery.

and talk about weird lp covers!
i suppose this could be considered exotica
just as Sandy Nelson albums would be.
the whole second side of this lp is mostly overprocessed electronic drumming
as well as a lot of the extended version of Supernature itself.

What's the story with Amanda anyway?  Isn't she a he?
And wasn't he/she a bit of a joke, even from the beginning?
I have two or three of her LP's which are on their way out when I get
around to them but I always kept them with my Charo record (which is also
kind of disco-y if I remember.)
And hey, do any of you know the "Disco Sissy" record?  Maybe I'll put that
on the end of the Amanda Lear CDR.

Yeah, we're a rather whacked crowd...

Well, just to keep it going: perhaps the more arcane question is the
origin of the term "NOW Sound." I don't associate the term with pre-1967
records because I don't recall ever seeing the term "now" applied to the
music before then. (Some did use "sounds of today" though)

To differentiate it from "disco" in the preconceptions of others, I tend
to refer to it as "mod/go-go discotheque."

Another distinction: the NOW LPs tend to be a bit EZ-er overall than the
go-go records.

a russian synthdoctor with a sound i enjoy more than aphex twin.
