You're a ham sandwich.
If Andy Williams singing "God Only Knows" is cheese, then so is the
original Beach Boys version.

Did we ever come up with a clear definition of cheese when we were
discussing this and kitsch and other such terms a year or so ago?

To me there's nothing cheesy about a good singer singing a good song.  Even
if he's not the original artist or he's a bit older than they are (though
in the case of Andy Williams I wonder how much older he actually is than
the guys in say, the Association who originally did Windy.)

The Telly Savalas records are cheesy.
For me, cheese requires a strange juxtaposition or an inappropriateness.
It is not inappropriate for Andy Williams to sing Good Morning Starshine.
Then again - and this kind of goes against my working definition here - I
think Good Morning Starshine by its very nature is a cheesy song and even
the original hit single by Oliver is pretty cheesy.  Andy's version is
certainly no MORE cheesy than that.
If you were forcefed Andy I can see how he might make you sick now though I
bet you wouldn't say the same thing if you were forcefed Claudine.  Talk
about cheesy.  I lover her records but some of that is mighty cheesey.
Compared to her Andy is just an edible cheese product.

Alan!  I 99% agree with you always!  And, I do agree
with your impassioned defense of Andy Williams....I
struggle with my appreciation with him on a daily
basis..but, man, I always relent and say "whatta

I am so GREEN!  I have only seen BLACK SUNDAY on my

PS: I have found it way too amusing all this
apologizing for the love of disco.  If music is good,
why deem it a guilty pleasure?  I "came out" on the
Bomp! list last year for saying how fuckingdabumb this
PBS BeeGees reunion was...and I'd say I got 50/50
support(but they're a bunch o' rednecks, right Brian
P? ;)
Anyway, Donna Summer both recorded "Je Taime" and
"Black Power" by Peter Thomas...so it's all
relative...Plus, that cute boy brought up the amazing
in every way version of "Quiet Village" disco-like by
one of the hottest boys in showbiz, Lalo Schiffrin.
And, DJJimmy baby, one of my most absolute favorite
people in the whole woild, I do love "I Feel Love"
because I so dig those Giorgio
Moroder production values...and I dig Donna.

i don't think it is a color issue. seems too  Gino Socio-Economical to
describe music!
i guess if i had to break it into categories i would say Euro-Disco as
opposed to Ameri-Disco!
i always liked the Euro-Disco influence because of the abundant use of
synthesizers and faster BPM's.
and loved the Ameri-Disco for the use of ultra funky bass and guitar work.
can't we all just get along!

i have never heard the two songs mentioned but would love too.
i was happy to just find Gino Soccio 's   Dancer 12" (its a boot but i will
take it)
now i gotta find Daddy Cool by Boney M .

I must say I'm loving all these discussions -
of both disco and the nature of "cheese".

But while we're on the subject of Tom Jones (whom
I also love) - does anyone else here dig Sandro,
the Argentinean Tom Jones?  Scored a couple of
late 60s / early 70s LPs of his a few months back.
He sings too many ballads but the uptempo numbers
remind me very much of Tom.  And he was a
looker, too - in a moody Elvis sorta way.

Seems like a good time to plug Morricone's score for John Boorman's
incomprehensible sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic.  The soundtrack is pretty
good even if derivative of Morricone's earlier work.  Much better than the
original's score IMHO.  I never was a big fan of "Tubular Bells"...

Funny though I had an off list conversation with JimmyB just last week on
this subject (disco that is!) where I offered to send him a copy of
Moritz's "Disco Explosion" tapes (which it now seems my not quite be to his
tastes..) that were sent to me by Moritz to get me an education in a style
of music I'd avoided like the plague since.. oh say 1975 or so.  I say he
had partial success as I've certainly opened up to funk / raw soul
blaxploitation since, but not a whole lot further.

Actually Lenny Dee did some disco covers.  And you've gotta hear his
version of "Love Train".  I just had to throw that in.
As far as William Shatner goes, I must say that I've never heard that
famous LP of his but I think those priceline commercials of his - like the
one with Ben Folds banging on a bell - are every bit as hip as anything Ken
Nordine could have done.
I hope Jack Diamond is lurking somewhere on the list so he can laugh at
that, given that Ken Nordine fucking rooooooooooooolz.

On a completely different topic, here are two great records:

Ok, I'm a little late on this but, on a whim the other day at a thrift
store I found this record called Satin Latino, which sounds suspiciously
like the Tjade-man.  The Artist is listed as Federico Ramirez, and it's
on a latin label called Discos Corona. it's all smooth vibe's.  There's
a track called Voo Doo that's just smokin.  Does anyone know anything
about this?

A nice one, but still not as great as the first.  It is, however, framed

An AMAZING album.  I have the CD.  That's one of those that you can't
imagine anyone ever actually owning back then!


I grabbed a few nice ones at a Goodwill this weekend:

Henry Jerome's Brazen Brass... I forget which one, but I'm very excited to
hear them.  I like stuff that Jerome has done.

A Mint copy of Xavier Cugat's Best of, with the three pictures of the chick
dancing.  I have this already, but not so pretty.

Senior Ros, the Latin Boss.  What a title!  On Studio 4 (or Phase 4, again,
I forget.  It's very early in the morning), but has some "traditional" latin
numbers like La Cucaracha and others.

Hugo Winterhalter.  I don't know much about him, but the song list was
great.  Wives and Lovers, Girl from Ipanema, and similar classics from
whatever year that was.

And two that I've been looking for for a while:
Peggy Lee, Latin a La Lee.  Not the best condition, but I'll be able to hear
it!  I was surprised that I didn't recognize many of the songs though...

and
Mancini's Charade soundtrack.  I LOVE the title theme, so I'm very much
looking forward to the rest.

I do a (mainly) disco night once a week in one of the clubs on the seafront,
and during the spring about the only regular clientele we had was about 20
deaf people who used to come down every week (and dance I will say).
Obviously signing is very useful in a club environment,  but how do you have
one of those 'private' conversations if your signing?
