    hey Dom - the first 3 are fantastic, in my opinion: It's Not Unusual
(incl rawk-god-to-be Jimmy Page on half the tracks, along w/Big Jim
Sullivan), What's New Pussycat & A-TOM-ic Jones. The UK version of A-TOM-ic
has 4 extra tracks, but doesn't include "Thunderball" & "Promise Her
Everything" themes - it does however include a picture of Tom in front of a
red tinted atomic explosion... I think the English might've thought the shot
was too... inflammatory.
    Also recommended is the pretty-easy-to-find "Live in Las Vegas" (not
Caesar's Palace), which includes the version of "Bright Lights & You Girl"
that Seks Bomba covers. A pretty impressive mix of "adult sophistication"
and out-&-out rocking (the drummer sounds like Mitch Mitchell half the
time).

Donna Summer is a good example of how close american and european, black and
white music in the 70s already were. But I also think that Moroder did a much
better producer job for her than her later American producers. At the time of I
Feel Love it was still experimental and yet popular music, an ideal situation,
if you talk about Pop.

I like both. Maybe I like euro disco a bit better, but in a rather humorous
"cheesy" way. I mean, of course, as with almost all styles of 20th century music,
the original idea comes from some past black music, and you could probably prove
that in disco without any problem. But "Black Is Black" (Baccara), once you have
to admit it, and whites trying to pretend to be very black in music are often
sooo embarrassing and this euro trash disco seemed to offer a way out of this
embarrassment trap. Just like computer music offered a way out of the
embarrasments of rock music. I can't explain it better. When I fancy myself on a
dance floor, I'd  rather see me dancing to Abba than to James Brown. Although I
think James Brown is much better.

Oh, while writing this I suddenly remember so many great black disco tunes at the
same time, that I have to take back what I said about preferring euro disco. It's
just different and seemed to fit better at some time.

Hey, now this is really incredible. I have a tape, that a friend recorded from
radio during his stay in Indonesia or Bali, with an Indonesian or Philippinian
version of that song, I don't speak either language. I had always wondered, what
in hell was going on. Your post clears it up tremendously.
Rita Lee, btw, when she got in trouble with her original lyrics, recorded a new
version with different lyrics, I forgot what the title of that new version was.
I never imagined that I would ever get to know further facts of this episode of
pop history, but the Exotica list once again made it possible.

one of the things I like about this list is that we all seem to have
approached exotica by way of an array of other tastes in different musical
styles, so it strikes me that we're fairly broad and
eclectic when it comes to choosing sounds.

I'm not a huge disco fan, but I'm sure there are people on this list who
could spin me some disco tracks and I'd say "that's bloody great". But I
just thought I'd mention -- in the spirit of critical disavowal -- where my
openness to music reaches its limits; the point where I simply have to say
"no". So here goes, what the hell.

MUSIC I HATE:

1) "New Age" music, especially anything on the 'Wyndham Hill' label. Some
music sounds like like vomit, but New Age sounds like vomit's slow decay...
under a stairwell somewhere. (Is 'Yanni' New Age? - he also belongs on this
list).

2) "New Country". I thought I hated country music until I heard Lefty
Frizzell, now I love OLD country as much as anything. I can't say the same
for Garth Brooks (or whatever he calls himself now).

3) Intentionally "funny" music, especially of the contemporary variety -
Weird Al Yankovic, Bare Naked Ladies etc. Never as amusing or as clever as
it thinks it is.

There's some other stuff I don't like but I don't want to alienate people.
(hope I haven't done that already - my apologies to any Yanni fans).

Also, there might be some exceptions to #3 but I can't think of any.  Part
of me thinks there ought to be worthwhile aspects to every genre of music
though numbers 1,2, & 3 would seem to controvert that.

I may be wrong though...

Silver Convention.  Their song Fly Robin Fly is funky, disco, euro
and popular in the US.

Which brings to mind the question I have often wondered. What was
the first Disco record???   THE HUSTLE?  Fly Robin Fly?  Donna
Summer's Love to Love You Baby?  I think its the Hustle but I'm
guessing.  Also I would bet there are much earlier underground
songs from the early 70s that were considered disco.

Good Morning Starshine put me on the defensove with my ski buddies.
Who said "Chuck is this soft pop"   I replied partly but its more
bubble gum like.  It starts off soft pop but by the time you are on
the second verse of ""oooppies"  it morphs into bubble gum, which
is a type of cheese music I like to chew but not swallow, except
for a few of the songs, like Sugar Sugar.

Now there's a good topic I don't think we've ever approached here.
The only things I can say I hate off the top of my head are the song "The
Night Chicago Died", the Moody Blues and Styx.

Hmmm.  I don't listen to this stuff myself but I do listen to stuff that I
imagine to be similar.  What about the Mystic Moods Orchestra?  What about
Bebe Bardon orgasming to the 101 Strings "Sounds of Love"?
Hard to put down new age music when you listen to so much easy listening.

You had me scared for a moment there. If you had put down "old country", we
would have had a fight on our hands.  Actually my route back to old country
was through a compilation which included some Lefty Frizzell.  Ernest Tubb
was also a big piece of the puzzle for me.
But have you tried what they call "no depression" or "insurgent country" or
whatever?  It's a form of "new country" you might like.

It's hard to put Wierd Al in the same category as our beloved ladies.  I
much prefer "trying to be funny" to "trying to be clever" even though I
admit there's nothing more painful than not laughing at a comedian.
But why didn't you mention the WORST example?  Were you afraid of
mentioning another local Canadian act, besides the BN Ladies, for fear that
the world would believe that we are the center of the universe for bad
unfunny music?

Moxy Fucking Fruvous.
I can't even look at them.
I'd rather listen to that old band Moxy all day long than look at one
member of that band smiling for one split second.

Quick. What else do I hate?

I'd say "Dixieland" but I know that's an ignorant term used to cover lots
of bases including what some people call "traditional jazz" or "hot jazz".
And I don't much like them either but occasionally someone can play me
something I like.
One time someone tried to convince me to like hot jazz and they said that
unlike the ponderous, serious, intellectual stuff I called jazz - which I
preferred - hot jazz was happy music.  Party music.
And I said "that's exactly why I don't like it".
And at the time I could claim a sort of purity since all I listened to was
sad music. The American Music Club, Nick Drake, Tindersticks, Smog...
But now that I listen to soft pop and Percy Faith, it's hard to take the
same position.
But I still maintain I don't like happy party music.
That's probably why I not only hate polka but also SKA and salsa and that
song "Hot hot hot".

Casey and Finch are merely KC and the Sunshine Band who are doing the
backing, and writing the songs (and presumably taking most of the
money...)
It's only a couple of them, though, on guitar and keys, and a Bentley
Rhythm Ace keeping them company...

Not totally relevant, but last week I scored a magazine: "Rock & Soul Songs
Annual", Spring 1976 issue. And now the list goes on a disco jag. Funny how
it all syncs up.

Not much disco referenced in the magazine, but then the masthead looks much
the same as "Hit Parader" did around that time... Editor - Lisa Robinson.
Contributing editors - Lenny Kaye, Vernon Gibbs, Vicki Wickham.
Photographers - Leee Black Childers, Neal Preston.

The most disco-oriented article is "Gloria Gaynor - Disco Queen". Also
stories on Labelle, Gil-Scott Heron, Jimmie Walker, Ohio Players, "The
Jackson Five Talk About Africa", Billy Preston, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Graham
Central Station, "Reggae Is Everywhere", Stevie Wonder... you can imagine.

Some terrifically over-heated prose. Too bad I'm too lazy to type it in.

And of course, a batch of song lyrics.

Simple ink on cheap paper, yet so evocative.

I grew up on punk, so disco always meant shit to me, until I realised
(some ten years later) that it was just soul music with a faster
beat, which makes it not that horrible thing it seemed back then.
After all, even the Sex Pistols included a disco medley of their
songs (by the "Black Arabs") in their film and soundtrack...
My 200 lire, back to the dancefloor now.

Oh yeah they are vile. My most hated music would have to include anything by

I can't agree completely. Some of it is plainly insufferable, but Windham
Hill's releases were broad enough to encompass what would otherwise be
categorized as "folk." Or wallpaper folk, if you want. George Winston's
"December" is a very lovely album. And some of William Ackerman's work as
well. (And without George Winston, we wouldn't have Dancing Cat, and we
wouldn't have those awesome Professor Longhair / Hawaiian slack-key guitar
releases.)

Then there's that Korn - Limp Bizkit - Slipknot slew of sound-alikes.

Okay, "new country" too.
