of course I did. My intention however wasn't that of making "profit" out of
it. Was of using it for fun. Or as a parody. Or in an absolutely new
contest. I never thought "hey! if I sample Michael Jackson I will become
famous since people will recognize it and buy my record!".

uhmmm. Ever heard of concepts like "fair use"?
2 Live Crew sampling Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" won their case because
they were making a prody and parody is allowed especially in the US system.
So their use -even of a well known sample- was fair.
I bet the same judge would not say that it is fair to distribute tons of
complete Roy Orbison tracks through Napster.

I may be wrong but to me it looks like you are applying the same definition
of stealing to one person who has stolen $100 and to another who borrowed a
banknote and before giving it back to the original owner took a small bit
out, to insert that bit in an original collage.

You know what I think: The only reason why you can perform such rethorical
radicalism is because the internet is such an anonymous place. Consider yourself
sitting in one room face to face with some of your favorite musicians, guys like
Martin Denny and whoever you like. And then you go: "Hi, you guys! I know you
guys make music and make a living on selling records, but you know what I want to
do? I will copy your records on CD and send everybody who wants one for free. No!
Wait, I've got a better idea: I will put it on my webside, so thousands of people
can download it for free and you don't get a penny for it. How do you like that?"
Would you do that?

Yes, not reading and/or understanding what's been explained to you in detail
and just repeating *previous* positions is no fun!

I was reading an article online this morning about the recent Senate hearings on Napster with the CEO of Napster and the drummer from Metallica. Someone pointed out that in the early days, Metallica urged their audience to tape and diseminate their music at will ... now they're complaining about being ripped off.
I can't imagine there's anyone on this list who hasn't taped music and sent it on or taped a tv show or duped a movie or xeroxed pages out of a book... we've all violated copyright law.
Just my two centavos.

Wow, thanks...both mp3s were great! Outstanding quality, too. What
equipment do you have to convert the video audio to mp3? Can you edit
mp3s...if so, what software?

I perdonally hate Metallica and I think they're a bunch of idiots; anyway
on this point I must remember teh Grateful Dead policy: copies of live
concerts (even in mp3) have always been permitted by the band. Commercial
use has been forbidden. Maybe in their early days Metallica just copied
this idea.
> I can't imagine there's anyone on this list who hasn't taped music and

of course. But the Napster case is different since it allows the creation
of a huge unprecedented network of people committing the violation.
When you buy a blank tape, you pay a tax included in the price. That tax is
going to pay in advance for the recording of copyright material.
This happens with videotapes too and audio cd-r and is the basis for the
legalization of "private copy". Napster just allows you to do the same but
without any compensation.

p.s. take a look here for the Grateful Dead policy.
