The flip side of Delicious is a nice little ditty called I Need A Vacation.
Great chorus of Oooba Doobas backing Mr. Backus, who sounds as if he's
singing from the confines of a rubber room. Wozard of Id's Mort Garson and
his group play the instruments

In a live venue spinning you *are* pretty much it here in the Seattle area
on a regular basis. I'll have to stop by, groove a bit and say hello. Once
in a while there will be someone spinning some exotica/lounge at Aerospace
or Baltic Room (both on Capitol Hill), but not on a timely weekly basis.
I do the weekly *Friendly Persuasion* radio show online and play out from
time to time in my band The Bran Flakes locally here in Seattle. There are
also some really cool spots and bands to see that feature exotica/lounge ...
it's just keeping your eyes peeled on upcoming events and such.
As far as music falling into the Avant-Garde/Experimental area there are
lots of shows and stuff. Plus local groups like the Sonicabal
(www.sonicabal.com), The Cyberartists, and The Tentacle (www.tentacle.org)
is a great free local newsletter and website publishing events and releases
+ for out-jazz, improv, experimental and more.
Oh yes... and The subterranean underground lair of Cool and Strange Music
Magazine is just over in Everett, WA. ha ha.
How many others on the list are here in Seattle? Maybe we should all
caravan down to see EZ-Action spin some sounds.

Which only adds up to my confirm that this song is an incredibly avantgardistic
piece of music. Did the success of this single ever lead to an album? Not only
musically, I'd be interested in the outcoming of the story, like what happened
when he finally arrived in that funny house and lived there and met Jesus and
Hitler and all those other guys...

Munich is still a hot bed of the Exotica cult. The evening yesterday at
the Glyptothek proved it again. The people of Soundmuseum had invited
Gordon W of Schmaltzwald to perform a cooking event, Mark had brought
some of the bigger Tiki sculptures from the venue in Berlin and two DJs
spiced the whole thing with a mix of clasic Exotica. What was special
about this event, was that the Tiki fest was surrounded by the huge
windows of the ancient greek sculpture collection of the Glyptothek,
which made an interesting contrast. Plus the show was transmitted live
via the internet - a fact that I only learned when I was there, so I
couldn't warn you.
The homepage of the soundmuseum is worth a visit: http://soundmuseum.de

High approval ratings for Trader Vic's Hawaiian Daiquiri Mix, if you go in
for pineapple. I add fresh squeezed lime juice (Key Limes if you can get
'em) to these cocktails.
Hawaiian Daiquiri
In a blender with one cup crushed ice, add
2 oz. Light Rum
4 oz Hawaiian Daiquiri Mix
Juice of half a Lime OR juice of a whole Key Lime
Blend until almost frozen but still liquid. Serve in a large champagne
glass. Paper parasol optional. A tasty variation on the rocks--just combine
equal parts of the mix and the rum with the lime juice.
Hawaiian Highball
1 1/2 oz. Vodka
4 oz. Hawaiian Daiquiri Mix
Juice of half a Lime OR juice of a whole Key Lime
Serve into a highball glass filled with cubed ice, top off with Soda Water.
Proost! as the Dutch say,
Mimi

The alternate (on Frolic Diner vol. 4, in the vinyl version) I think
it's not up to the standard of the original, which is featured also
as track 1-side A on Frolic Diner vol. 3 (vinyl, don't know if it's
also on the cd issue).
That track is way out & too much!

I recently picked up Lalo's 'Gone with the Wave'. It's very enjoyable, although I wish it had been a little less jazzy and more lush.

>And.....what's on the soundtrack?
It's an original soundtrack, inspired by the easy listening records I
became obsessed with in the course of making the film. I'd describe it as
similar to a lot of the dj breakbeat loungehop stuff you hear these days
except that it DOESN'T have the big drum and the big bass. It's the kind
of music that goes ON TOP OF the big drum and the big bass.
BTW, there is a theatre in Calgary which we expect to pick it up for a
weekend or so...

Kevin, are the Moai lights you ordered the older, larger style? If so, I'd
love to know your source. The ones at cheesylights.com are the new 3"
Freaky Tiki ones, which don't charm me in the slightest. I've been looking
for the larger, say 7" size for a few years now--they used to sell them at
Archie McPhee's, but no longer. I remember a (former?) 'lister was trying
to convince the company that owned the molds to sell them to him...

Almost forgot: The Schmalzwald has a CD out now which apparently is a
Best Of their live performances, featuring this incredible singer "JJ",
the most charismatic person I've seen since Arthur Brown. The CD is
called Pagan Schmalz. I haven't heard it yet, so I don't know if it
works without the visuals; I guess I'd prefer a video. I will come back
on this subject as soon as I got my copy of the CD. Can be ordered
directly from the Schmalzwald homepage at http://Schmalzwald.com and
it's really cheap.

The title of Sven's book will be "The Book Of Tiki" and it's not out yet. It
should be out every day now, so be prepared to find your wildest dreams about
Tiki come true soon!

Nat, you're really incredible. Before most people even got to SEE your docu,
you are already selling the SOUNDTRACK. You know how to start a cult, don't
you?

I'm surprised that the closing of Napster hasn't been discussed here in
epic
length. Maybe that's a progress :-).
Just one little list-related thought: As the key question seemed to be
wether Napster was a platform for private data exchange or a commercial
exploitation of producer's rights, a forum like the exotica mailing list
could become a very precious place for legal music swap in the future.
The idea is to publish URL-page-addresses within this list and only
here, that contain MP3 data to download, but have no accessable link on
any other website, which would kind of prove, that they are only made
for list members and therefore "private". It could replace the "exotica
ring".

Pretty amazing. Seems to be more of a spoken word record though...

Nothing could replace the exoticaring...
You can ask yourself whether an online warehouse could replace a market
and you would probably say, yes it could, and yet people would still go=20
to the market to buy their goods. I would. You obviously don't have to ask=
=20
anymore whether email could replace sending cards and letters, of course=20
it can, but yet people are still sending letters and cards. I am.=20
And why, probably because once in a while I want to get away from my=20
computer screen and experience very real things in very real time, the=20
object character of a CD or a postcard strikes me as much more appealing=20
and desirable than a virtual internet file, I mean, however much pleasure
you'll get from a story or a novel from the internet, it just doesn't
compare to a book, and so I could download endless versions of Tico=20
Tico onto my harddisk, but yet I'd rather find an exquisite Latinesque=20
CD comp in my mailbox.

those files are only virtual until you convert them to wavs and burn them to
a CD. and i don't view those files a virtual anyway. they are there on my
hard drive, physically, and can be utilized in many different ways.
for me, nothing is better than free music (yes at someone's, usually the
record company's expense).
ton, no offense, but your argument that you like to "get out" to the record
store is very individualistic. and that is ok. me? i like to do things not
in front of the computer too (the idea that i am saying this sound a little
crazy to me -- everybody feels the same way).
for me, pouring over 16 dollar CD's at a store is not my idea of having fun.
sorry if i misunderstood your comments, and again, in no way do i want to
offend. i just feel like typing this morning.

let's put it this way: I (yes, me, Dj Batman!) am suing Napster together
with other people. Why?
I am sure that Napster is just a software for exchanging data, yet it was
clearly designed for mp3 trading despite what they may say. Now, I think I
am very openminded on copyright issues (I sample a lot of stuff and I have
nothing against sampling, for example... even if sometimes you *have* to
ask permission and you can't avoid that). Also, I have been giving several
free tracks of my own stuff on dozens of different internet sites. Check
for example http://www.mp3.com/djbatman and
http://stage.vitaminic.com/dj_batman
But when I give away something for free on these services, I usually get
something else; I am not referring to money since I made practically no
money with my personal mp3 tracks (but I've sold cds and tracks by other
productions I or other friends have made). I am referring to people seeing
a webpage, contacting me or the other artists, asking for more stuff like
that or sending negative critiques... whatever. I have put one free track,
particularly, "Fascinating Destroyer", on several sites. One of those,
www.riffage.com, decided to use it on his promo cd-rom "Jetset" (it has
even been used as the mai theme music when you run the cd) and also on
"Best of Riffage Techno" which was not a promo but cd/cd-r commercial release.
Still, no money, but great promotion and some satisfaction for all the hard
work and all the time spent making tracks, putting up websites, getting
contacts etc.
I can't get anything of all this from Napster (not yet, at least).
Second, through my label I administer online rights for other people. I
don't own these people's tracks (even if I may have percentages on sales).
These people give me a license of putting the tracks for sale or for free
in certain places. Their stuff ends up in Napster. In their opinion, if
they have a damage from this, I may be liable because I should have
prevented circulation in unauthorized sites...
Alessandroni is one of these: he makes most of the money on mp3.com simply
by free plays/downloads (payback for playback). You can always see how much
he has earned from the beginning of that webpage by reading the earnings
amount under his picture, on the right column at
http://www.mp3.com/alessandroni
You can still play/download stuff all free, but the artist is compensated
and encourage to publish more.
I am going to have online music by a noted female vocalist thar worked with
Morricone and Alessandroni. The people who put me in contact with this
person may not like the problem with Napster filesharing...
Finally, there were even rumours that Napster (like some areas in mp3.com
and www.emusic.com) was becoming a paid subscription service. With the
substantial difference that mp3.com and emusic are spending MILLIONS in $
to get licenses to use certain material in their subscription services.
In other words: WOULD YOU *PAY FOR SUBSCRIPTION* TO A PIRATE
SATELLITE/CABLE TV?!?!!?!?!?!?
Anyway: looks like that Napster wont be shut down after all (see the latest
news) and they are even hiring someone who will deal with licensing issues
etc. ...
Just my 2 cents, and now I hope I don't get flamed too much...
p.s. just curious: any other artists/musicians in here that have had their
stuff on Napster against their will?

Nicola (Dj Batman) Battista

everybody read that last sentence above again - the sentence starting "Now, I
think I am very open-minded on copyright issues."
let me get this straight. you have a problem with others stealing your music
but you don't have a problem with "sampling" "a lot of stuff"?
and "sometimes" you "have" to ask permission. so sometimes you don't ask
permission?
i am sorry because i cannot say this with out sounding harsh: "sampling"
others works is the same thing when people download mp3 WITH THE HELP of
napster.
now keep in mind i don't think sampling is bad just as i don't see how you
can shut down a service for helping the exchange of data. are either
activities illegal for the "sampler" or "downloader"? probably. more like
definitely. but not for the software company.
i just don't see how you can say one is ok and not the other.
let's look at this sampling v. downloading a different way. one may argue
that at least the person who downloads the mp3's FOR THEIR OWN USE are not
profiting from the download. yes, they are saving money and yes the artist
and the hordes of middlemen are missing some profits.
ok, now let's go to sampling. those who sample are USUALLY doing it to MAKE
money. whether it is a dj gig or making a musical number to sell.
so with that argument the sampler is actually using SOMEONE ELSE'S
"intellectual property" for personal profit gain. you are selling someone
else's work. period.
now i do not believe that the argument that they are small "samples" has
anything to do with it. even if it is a nanosecond long, it is someone
else's nanosecond.
again, i do not have a problem with sampling or mp3 downloading -- i just
don't think you can argue that one is wrong without admitting that the other
is wrong (or substitute right for wrong if you like).
and still again, i do not mean to sound too harsh. just allowing my opinion.
