KALAUPAPA, Hawaii (AP) -- Alice Chang Kamaka, who lived at the state's Hansen's disease settlement at Kalaupapa most of her life, died Monday. She was 94.
Diagnosed with Hansen's disease, or leprosy, as a teen-ager, Kamaka was one of thousands of island residents who were sent to the remote peninsula on the island of Molokai in an effort to curb the spread of the disease.
She had lived at Kalaupapa since 1919, and chose to remain there along with other patients after the quarantine was lifted in the 1960s.
Kamaka arrived at Kalaupapa when Brother Joseph Dutton, who had worked with Father Damien DeVeuster, was still caring for patients on the peninsula.
Father Damien came to Kalaupapa in 1873 at age 33 to minister to leprosy patients, and then died of the disease in 1889. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1995.
Kamaka was an extra in the 1998 Belgian movie, ``Molokai: The Story of Father Damien,'' which was filmed at Kalaupapa.
She outlived 12 siblings and was married five times. She bore the name of her fifth husband, who died in the 1950s.
