Subject: (exotica) Kahiki tickets and hotel rooms
For those of you who made reservations for the Aug 26 party at the Kahiki
the way Michael Tsao explained it to me was that they were taking reservations
then after they figured out how many people would get in from my list
(about 100 signed on) versus the one they had already started at the
Kahiki (they stopped taking local reservations after they got 300
calls in one week)
then they would call back everyone on the list (so we have over 400
"reservations" and only 350 tickets)
you DO NOT have a ticket by making a reservation
and you do not have a ticket if you did not give your credit card number
I was not aware that they had started selling tickets
someone just emailed me that they were called and gave their credit card info
This process could take several days if only one person is working on
it so hang tight and let the Kahiki call you
Michael Tsao promised me that anyone who is traveling in from out of
town will get in so tell them that you have already booked your
flight and hotel
As for hotels here is what we have decided on
I am staying at the
Homestead
4182 E. Main St
614-235-2348
tell them you are with the Kahiki/Tiki News party for a 10% discount
price below include the discount
single bed room $40
two bed room $45
There is also the
Brookside
3020 E. Main St
614-236-1724
tell them the same thing, discount included in prices below
they didn't speak English very well so I am not 100% sure that they
understood me but I think it is all set
one person/one bed $40.51
two person/one bed $45
two bed $46.30
I couldn't work any deals out with this hotel but they are right near
the other two so if the first two fill up this place is a third option

A post about a rekkid!
'Ivy' Pete and his Limbomaniacs
"Limbo Party" (Somerset Stereo-Fidelity)
Surely not 'authentic' calypso, but studio musician limbo-sploitation.
Still a pleasant low-key spin, I think. The electric guitarist in
particular gets off some tasty ornamental leads.
Snazzy cover, with a fetchingly flexible lass limbo-ing her limbo way
beneath a fiery limbo pole as friends and musicians party on (dood). I
think I've also seen this cover in Cool & Strange Music Magazine or
somewhere like that.
The liners note: "We recommend you do not try the flame bit on the pole...
this is for real experts or drunks that live near a firehouse."
Anyone have the inside skinny on who actually cut this record?
Thanks,

EMPEROR NORTON:
HAACK & ESTHER NELSON & DIMENSION 5 RECORDS,
BRUCE: Listen Compute Rock Home CD (EMN 7021CD).
1999 release. "CD compilation of tracks from the various covetable
Dimension 5 LP's (first and most famously the Dance, Sing, and
Listen franchise but also The Electronic Record for Children, The
Way Out Album for Children,, Together, Dance to the Music, Captain
Entropy, This Old Man, Funky Doodle, etc...). Haack was of course
the fellow who after studying with Persichetti at Julliard in 1954,
devoted his life to entertaining children with song via his various
home-brewed electronic remedies (these include the 'Adam2', the
'FARAD', and the 'Magic Wand') and vaguely avant storytelling
sensibilities. This music would be impressive enough for a
contemporary figure, even were they not set to tape as early as
1962(!) giving Raymond Scott (later a good friend of Haack, rumors of
an unreleased collaboration abound) a run for his money. Occasional
cringe-inducing child-mind squirm only offsets a pleasurable outing
slightly. Warrants further investigation." -- Hrvatski. $13.00
HAACK & ESTHER NELSON & DIMENSION 5 RECORDS, BRUCE:
Listen Compute Rock Home LP (EMN 7021LP). $11.00
MATADOR:
TENOR, JIMI: Out of Nowhere CD (OLE 460 CD). "Out of Nowhere is
Tenor's third album for Warp and his first for Matador. It is NOT his
long-awaited 'pop' album. It marks Jimi Tenor as a serious composer,
extremely dislocated from everything else going on. This is Jimi's
first orchestral record, and was recorded with the 60-piece Orchestra
of the Grand Theatre Lodz, in Poland. The results are insanely
varied. 'Blood On Borscht' sounds like Carl Orff's Carmina Burana
covered by a heavy metal band with a cast of 1000 slave extras... on
the Planet of the Apes. In other words: terrifying. Single and video
track 'Spell' riffs on Curtis Mayfield in his sublime early 70s
period on the Curtdom label. And the opener'"Out of Nowhere' marries
the high drama of Lalo Schifrin to music reminiscent of a scene of
alien abduction somewhere in Nevada. Elsewhere, Jimi has Baluji
Shrivastav, his blind sitar player, tune his instrument to the
Chinese scale to approximate a 'Hollywood idea' of Asian music. Yes,
that bizarre." [CD-only release in the US] $14.00

QDK MEDIA (GERMANY):
VA: Doob Doob O' Rama 2: More Filmsongs From Bollywood CD
(QDK 036 CD). "A super slab of of Bollywood kitsch. Not remixes, but
the actual soundtrack cuts from the films that made India famous. Get the
Indian film spin on Japanese music with Lata Mangeshkar's 'Sayonara'
from the movie Love In Tokyo. Big band country boogie woogie
Bombay-style with Getta Dutt's 'Mera Naam Chin Chin Chiu' from the
movie Howrah Bridge to western swing the eastern way with Kishore
Kimar's 'Ina Mina Dika' from Aasha. Asha Bhosle's and Mohamed Rafi's
'Gulabi Raat Gulabi' mixes Cab Calloway's 'Minnie The Moocher' with
Indian-style spy movie guitar and smoldering call and response duet
vocals." $15.00
RATHER INTERESTING (GERMANY):
ATOM HEART FEATURING TEA TIME: XXX CD (RI 054). "Following
the release of Uwe Schmidt's masterful El Baile Aleman (as 'Senor
Coconut'), here comes another installment in the confusing saga of
'Atom Heart', which seems to be a further distillation of the
influences that have directed his records since migrating to Chile in
the mid-90s. This time out, Uwe has enlisted the vocal skills of the
Chilean rapper 'Tea Time', fusing Atom=81's already established
aesthetics of cut and paste with the style of Latin hip hop. Atom=81
quotes and refers to loads of Latin stereotypes, styles and rhythms,
as well as cultural phenomena such as the 'Latin lover'. The rapping
(mostly in Spanish) is supplanted with a decidedly more nasty lyrical
content than the romance of previous records. To call this
Latin-tinged booty rap is just telling part of the story, because
Uwe's trademark more than anything else seems to be working in a
particular style in order to turn said style on it's head. Between
the subtle use of assorted digitized stutters and cut-ups, to the
tempos that don't sound quite right, and even the often silly X-rated
content -- once again Atom has made a record that appears to be a
novelty. But repeated listens reveals an intelligence, humor and
stunning musical content that is rare in electronic music." -- Billy
Kiely $16.00

combination
of reasons not to spam the moron: (a) he's not really worth it, (b)
why
perpetuate negative energy, and (c) I'd rather talk about music!
On that note, who all has heard Lalo Schifrin's re-releases of many of
his
most popular soundtracks, all newly-recorded, and most with the German
WDR big band? The keyboardist, a Frank Chestenier (if memory serves)
is one bad dude on the B-3. Check 'em out on the Aleph label available

etc. are great releases!

("let's limbo to the gayest bounciest beat of all.. )
mostly for the cover...
"Limbo. The Latest Party Dance Craze" on Columbia by The Trinidad Serenaders

Continuing my flea finds posts, here's a double album from Terry Baxter =
and His Orchestra.
This LP has some fun arrangements from popular hits like Goin' Out Of My =
Head, and (Sound of) Silence. There's a weird take on The Good, The Bad =
and The Ugly main theme and a "smooth 'n easy" Mission: Impossible and yet =
another cocktail version of Green Tambourine. =20
Between tracks there's some weird sound-effects such as a jet taking off, =
a train chuggin' along, and electronic noodling that makes the album just =
that much more interesting although why these sound interludes between =
songs are included is anybody's guess. Anybody??
Any other fun Terry Baxter LP's out there??

I recently picked up this LP, and sort of agree that these four
arrangements are the standouts, Nathan. By the Time I Get to Phoenix is a
period piece all the way. And the Impossible Dream and It Must Be Him score
solid 10s in the cool renditions of overwrought songs category. Noticed
that Frank Hunter's arrangements were the ones that grabbed me--not those
by Johnny Spence, Bill Justis and the glamorously named Caravelli. For my
ears, those tunes about it though--an otherwise colorless LP. Anyone have
any background on Frank Hunter?
As far as sound effects, that fascinates me too. Maybe this was a way the
producers harkened back to the days of early stereo when such gimmicks were
more commonplace. I'm thinking here of Liberty Proudly Presents Stereo, the
Visual Sound (LST 100). The sound effects of this LP range from a ping pong
game to a jet taking off. Plus there's an interlude in which Julie London
purrs about her forthcoming record. Can't recommend this LP enough to you
exotica lovers. Check out Chick Floyd's Samoan Knife Dance and the John
Buzon Trio's Caravan...and Denny's Stranger in Paradise from Quiet Village.
Thx for any info on Frank Hunter, y'all,
Mimi

Subject: (exotica) cd recorder day one
I'm still afraid to try and record my vinyl so I'm sticking to recording -
or transferring - CD's. Boiling them down.
Yesterday I combined the "best" cuts from "Soft & Easy" and "18th Street
Lounge, Jet Society" onto one CDR. Now I can sell those.
There's almost no end to how much of this I might do. I know that these
CDR's are a bit "faceless" compared to the original object but then again,
this kind of music is kind of faceless to begin with.
Next I'm putting the first two Tortoise CD's onto one.
Then it's three John Zorn Naked City things onto one (that could be hard
just trying to choose one snippet of screaming fake crime jazz interruptus
over the other.)
Eventually though I'll have to get to the vinyl. My girlfriend is
apparently moving in to this apartment which I already thought was small
when I was alone. It's not going to make that much difference - in terms
of space - if I get rid of these 600 or so records that are slated for
"best-of-digitizing" but it might feel just that much less cluttered.
I spent a hundred dollars just on vinyl last weekend so I guess I can't
really say that I'm "over" this easy listening accumulation thing but let's
just say my standards are a bit higher and I think about it less often.
And there's some great records on the chopping block.

Definitely. I think I asked about this Mr. Baxter a year or so ago when I
finally relented and brought home one of his "best of's".
It seems he only did records like this. Mostly Columbia Record Club
offerings or Columbia Musical Treasuries.
I have "The Best of '70" (2 records), "Sounds of 71" (3 records) and "Hits
of the 60's" (3 records and a great bodypainting cover).
Sounds of 71 is probably the best with its covers of "Psychedelic Shack"
and "In the year 2525" but "Best of 70" does a pretty good "Whole Lotta
Love". And then like I said, there's the naked bodypainting cover on the
60's one.
Most of Terry's arrangements are "soft". The wild stuff like Psychedelic
Shack is the exception. But I like his soft stuff too. (Yes it's come to
that. Happened long time ago.)
I'd pick up anything with his name on it.
(It will take at least two if not three CDR's to dump the best of this
stuff onto.)

I don't have any info on him but that White Goddess record of his (or
something like that) with the big white woman on the front is one of my
"holy grails".
I can't remember if that was his moog record. If not, then his moog record
is another one of my grails.
As far as I can tell, he's yet another one of those solid professional
arrangers who did a bit of whatever he had to do and occasionally came up
with greatness.
I have a record by him called "Watermelon Man" by Frank Hunter and the
Huntsmen. It's a solid horns n organ rockin little record that has
survived a whole bunch of purges.
It says he has arranged for Coleman Hawkins, Joe Harnell, Roger Williams,
Carmen McRae, Eddie Fisher and Pat Boone. That's uh.... eclectic.
Here's a quote from the man himself.
"Music is my life", says Frank. "I love it".
Talented and eloquent too.

Subject: (exotica) See Buddy soar
From liner notes to Buddy Greco's "Buddy's in a Brand New Bag"
"HE IS HIP. When he walks into a recording studio, it is with the
satisfied air of a man who knows his collar points and curls the right
way, his tie (if any) is the right width, and his boots will be looked at
by others who want to know how it's done. If he watches television, it's
so he can have some contact with the straight world.
He's secure in his own taste. He'll buy his next suit at Woolworth's
five and dime if he sees the right thing hanging there. He's usually six
months to six years ahead in the discovery of things that later become
discovered by Time, teens and most piano players.....
Now the hip Mr. Greco focusses his talents on the pop music world. Some
of the distinctions are obvious. Where before the rhythms had been loose
and lightly grooved, now they become driving, heavily orchestrated,
massive. Like switching from lemon tea to Jack Daniels. Where before
the repertoire tended to vintage Rogers and Hart and Weill, now it's more
in the Leiber-Stoller-Bacharach bag...
As Charlie Parker once flew with strings, so does Buddy Greco fly with
six electric guitars...
Buddy has always been a man who's had many things: a Levi suit and
perfect pitch. A low handicap at golf and a firm handshake. Admirers
ranging from Dizzy Gillespie to Queen Elizabeth. Much, much more. And
now, Buddy's got a brand new bag. A pop sound. See Buddy soar."
A welcome back gift from...

Does anyone know about this one? It's a bunch of badly recorded Dean Martin
covers on Mira Records. It claims to be from 1966 but looks like it could be
a well done contemporary joke. Also includes a version of "Georgy Girl"
called "Gregory Girl" for no apparent reason.
