The Tiki Tones have two singles as well: "Songs For Rum Drinkers" and
"Enchanted Tiki Tones". They're both on Dionysus, and should still be
available from their catalogue.
Where can I find "Leisure Time"? What label is it on? I don't have

Subject: (exotica) Oberammergau
Just came back from a day at the Passionsfestspiele at Oberammergau.
It's a "typical" (no it isn't) Bavarian event, that takes place every
ten years for one season. It's a 6 hours musical about the crucification
of Christ, made by and starring exclusively residents of the small
Bavarian village of Oberammergau, hundreds of them, most of them
long-haired and bearded. Even for me this was a truly "exotic"
experience, and not only because Germans were a vanishing minority among
all those American, Japanese, Australian, South African, and and and
tourists in the audience, average age 69. The story goes, that when in
1633 the black pague was wasting entire countries in Europe, the people
of Oberammergau swore that they would perform a musical in celebration
of Christ every ten years if the plague would go away. Obviously it went
away and today this play is a 100 million dollar business. I still can't
believe this 5000 crowd of white haired people... and my knee still
hurts from sitting still for 6 hours. But since this is *completely*
off-topic I shut up now.

Hey, do I really read the word *TIKI* in the header of a majority of
postings the last couple of days? Great-a-loha! Remember when I got into
this list some 3 years ago, Tiki aficionados were a small minority in
the Exotica list, who were, well..., not much more than "accepted",
surely not taken serious by most of the list members. So what happened?
Given in? Surrender? Started to like those funny little guys?

I know how that is; happened a lot of times to me after finding a long searched
record at last in a clean new CD version and hardly understanding why I wanted it
so much, what was a scratchy noisy 45 in my memory. Scratches ARE the patina of

Yeah, and that dirty hiss really recalls the sound of ratty AM radios in
car dashboards or cheap transistor radios. I love punk played from a filthy
record. Somehow a bath in beer improves a Sex Pistols or Ramones LP. God
knows what beer drek does to a stylus though.

Subject: (exotica) Basic Hip on the Friendly Persuasion Show
hi all -
Awhile back, Otis F Odder offered me an opportunity to do a "guest hour" on
"Friendly Persuasion", Cool and Strange Music Magazine's weekly radio show on
Antenna Internet Radio. So I took him up on it.
My Oddiotroniks hour - a sort of preview to my upcoming site - can be heard
at the following URL all week long. Stop by and have a listen. I hope there
is something there new for you to discover. Exotica fans check Clyde Borly,
Mike Simpson and Miriam Burton. don't miss the two Les Baxter commercial
spots (track 7).

Bye for now -
1. FEVER Clyde Borly and his Percussions
Music In 5 Dimensions (Atco SD-33-195)
Two tracks on this album, Taboo and Afromania, explode with unique percussive
instruments, sound effects, animal cries and a unique electronic instrument,
the Ondes Martenot. Two of the best pieces of exotica I've ever heard. The
rest of this tough-to-find LP does not live up to those incredible titles
but, as heard by this fine version of Fever, it still delivers the goods.
Recorded in Paris, France.

2. YELLOW BIRD Art Coates
Whistling For the Birds (Dot DLP-25781)
If I had but one album to recommend to a person skeptical of the joy of
whistling records, this would one of them. If they are still not convinced,
they never will be! Bubbles In The Wine is priceless. God bless you, Art
Coates.

3. MONKEY PUZZLE Mike Simpson
Jungle Odyssey (Evolution 2005)
I collected exotica for quite a few years before I stumbled upon this hidden
gem. The actual sounds of lions, elephants, hippos, warthogs and other
animals of Kruger National Park, South Africa, with the music written around
them. The results are a sparkling musical sound picture that brings the king
of the jungle and all his subjects right into your living room.

4. FANCY FEATHERS Fess Parker (Sung by Gloria Wood)
Fancy Feathers (Cascade Records CLP-R1002)
This musical fantasy takes place on a farm with Fess (Davy Crockett) Parker
playing the part of the storytelling farmer. Head "Mouseketeer" Jimmy Dodd
and Paul Frees, one of the most sought after voices in Hollywood, round out
the cast. Music written and arranged by Mel Henke!

5. NATURE BOY Bill Page
Sounds of the Sonic Sixties (Tower ST 5084)
A former member of Lawrence Welk's band, Bill Page and his sonically
sensational "all-ampliphonic" orchestra perform a supersonic rendition of the
Eden Ahbez classic.

6. COMMENT AND SONG FROM PITTSBURGH Tony Schwartz
The World in My Mailbox (Folkways FP 62)
"Documenting life in sound and pictures" is something Tony Schwartz has been
doing since 1945, when he bought his first Webcor wire recorder and began to
record the people and sounds around him. From this hobby developed one of the
world's largest and most diverse collections of voices, street sounds and
music, a collection that resulted in nineteen albums for Folkways and
Columbia Records. The World In My Mailbox is a fascinating compilation of
tapes Schwartz has received from people around the world through exchange.

7. LES BAXTER ADVERTISING SPOTS Charles H. Stern Agency
The "In" Sound for the Commercial Industry
Kraft candies and Schick razor blades are the featured products.

8. MICHELLE Norman Habel
For Mature Adults Only (Fortress Records)
Sensitive prayer of a teenage girl coming to grips with her curiosity and
fear of sex. Accompanied by harpist Corky Hale. Thanks to Will at Show and
Tell Music for the loan on this one!
View the album cover here: http://www.metro.net/basichip/covers/44.jpg
9. DEPOSIT BOTTLES Eddy Manson
Suite from "The Little Fugitive" (Folkways FA 2070)
One of my all-time favorite movies, a shoestring budget gem from 1953 about a
little kid (Joey) who is tricked into thinking he has killed his older
brother, Lenny. He runs away and wanders for hours around Coney Island. The
entire movie revolves around Joey's experiences, such as getting a pony ride,
hitting baseballs fired at him from a ball machine or collecting bottles and
turning them in for a deposit. There is very little dialogue in the film,
just Eddy Manson's quirky harmonica solos.
View the album cover here: http://www.metro.net/basichip/covers/01.jpg
10. APARTHEID Miriam Burton
African Lament (Epic LN 24011)
This is a big-time exotica heavyweight. Very rare and incredibly good. An
album of deeply felt musical impressions of a continent making the tense
transition from old to new. No attempt at ethnic authenticity has been made,
this is simply a presentation of musical pictures which relate to certain
African facts and folklore. The orchestra is filled with African percussive
instruments and, to capture the spirit and pain of the African caught in
turmoil, Miriam Burton's soaring wordless vocals serve as a dramatic
introduction to a truly great talent.

11. FORMULA 5
SUPERCAR The Mike Sammes Singers
Music Composed and Conducted by BARRY GRAY
Supercar and Fireball XL5 Original Television Soundtracks (Fanderson Records
/ Polygram)
Great collection of incidental music and library tracks from Gerry Anderson's
classic Supermarionation series. To the best of my knowledge, the only
source for this limited CD is through Fanderson Sales in the UK. You'll need
to become a member of the Gerry Anderson Fan Appreciation Society to make
purchases.

12. BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO IBM 7090 Computer and Digital to Sound Transducer
Music From Mathematics (Decca DL 9103)
A album of computer music - from over forty years ago! No MIDI files here,
this is the real McCoy - sounds described mathematically by a sequence of
numbers. These numbers are punched on IBM cards, which are fed into the
computer and the digits recorded in the memory of the machine. Instead of
writing his score in notes, the composer programs his music by punching a
second set of IBM cards and feeding them into the computer. The tape that
eventually emerges from the computer contains sounds in the form of magnetic
impressions. A digital-to-sound transducer then converts these impressions
into the finished musical product.

13. TOM THUMB'S TUNE Patience and Prudence
Liberty 45 RPM
Sisters Patience and Prudence McIntyre, aged 11 and 14, were the daughters of
orchestra leader Mack McIntyre. In 1956, they had a #4 record with Tonight
You Belong To Me and followed up with the #11 Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now.
14. EASY COME, EASY GO LOVER Franklyn MacCormack
The Torch is Burning (Liberty LRP-3086)
A veteran of 46 years in show business, Franklyn MacCormack was a well-known
personality on Chicago radio since 1933. With a voice like warm molasses,
MacCormack filled the air for Chicago's night people with a quiet blend of
soft music, nostalgic poetry and tranquil patter. His listeners ranged from
misty-eyed teen-agers returning from dates to policemen on stakeouts who
relaxed to his "quiet hour tones designed to tie memories to." One of his
best known achievements was his collaboration with Wayne King on Melody of
Love, in which he recited the sentimental Because I Love You. Franklyn
MacCormack died the day after suffering a heart attack while on the air
during his WGN All-Night Showcase in 1971.

15. HAPPY TRACKS Pete Drake
Steel Away (Canaan CAS-9640)
Steel guitar great Pete Drake coaxes from his instrument a strangely baffling
sound. He makes it TALK! You'll do a double take that's for sure. On this
recording of Sacred Music, Pete is backed by the exciting voice blends of The
Four Guys.

16. HELLER-FERGUSON MONTAGE
Hugh Heller, Allyn Ferguson, Dave Williams, Jacques Wilson, Dick
Hamilton, Allan Davies, Jules Chaikin
Featuring Marty Paich, The Hi-Los and The Johnny Mann Singers
Johnny Spots, Private Ear / Creative Freakout Advertising Songs (The Heller
Corporation / Brief Records)
A seven and a half minute tribute to one of my all-time favorites. The
Heller Corporation was in the business of producing creative sound
commercials and thematic identification music for television and radio.
Aside from one excellent release on the Command label, Singers, Talkers,
Players, Swingers and Doers, recordings by The Hellers are very scarce as
they were promotional items (typically seven and ten inch records) never
intended for public sale. This mix features the voice of Johnny Spots,
"Private Ear" who is played by Ben Chandler. I've woven his smooth narration
in and out of radio station breaks for various cities and some highly
entertaining commercials.

17. THERE'S A SONG INSIDE MY SAW Robert C. Pritikin
There's A Song In My Saw (P & G 108)
Musical saw virtuoso puts his bow to some old favorites, changing the titles
slightly to fit in the word "saw". Yestersaw (Yesterday), Song Sawn Blue
(Song Sung Blue), When You Wish Upon A Saw, I Left My Heart In Saw
Francisco...get it? Just as I was about to dismiss this as another goofy
homemade record, I listened carefully to the clever (sexual) word play of
this original title and decided it was pretty good afterall.

18. WOMAN IS LIKE A FRUIT Chiitra Neogy
The Perfumed Garden (Pulsar AR-10600)
Beautiful Indian actress passionately performs poems from The Perfumed
Garden, an age-old erotic manual written to help human beings achieve the
fullest joy in their sexual lives.

19. I HATE YOU (FOR BEING SINGLE) Ruth Wallis
Torrid Love Songs Of Men and Memories (Wallis Original LPW-9)
An album of moody love songs and torch ballads with the typical Wallis accent
on the libido. The fine guitar work is by Tommy "The Cat" Miles.

20. INTRO (PHINNIES T. EISENGLASS)
CLARINET POLKA The Jug Heads
MEXICAN HAT DANCE Fred Hage
Hi-Fi Sounds for Hounds (San Francisco Records M-33009)
The San Francisco Record label is one of my favorites. Unusual sounds in
music - not general commercial appeal - are what their records are all about.
This album is a zany collection from various artists in California. The six
member Jug Heads play nothing but jug-like instruments - large soda bottles,
wine jugs, as well as two toy fifes. Fred Hage is an amazing one-man band.

21. ANN CHRISTIANSEN VOICING HER CHOICE
Audiodisc Recording Blank
I love these blank discs where you could make your own recordings on home
disc-cutting machines or in coin-operated booths. Sort of like thumbing
through an old family photo album you found, these "audio snapshots" can be
fascinating glimpses into otherwise very ordinary lives. Here, a young girl
named Ann calls a small town radio host to voice her choice for her favorite
song.

22. BELL AND XYLOPHONE PIANO - Blues
Musical Gadgetry (Spectrutone AH-1002)
From the brazen pounding of the Carousel Band Organ to the lacy pizzicato of
the Regina Music Box, Musical Gadgetry is a unique collection of mechanically
produced music. Other featured devices are a Monkey Grinder's "Hurdy Gurdy",
Street Piano and Mandolin Piano. My favorite is the electrically powered
Orchestrope, which contains a triangle, cymbal, blocks, tambourine, drums,
xylophone and piano, all controlled by a vacuum system, similar to that used
in the familiar player piano.

23. AVE MARIA Virginia Belmont
Virginia Belmonts Famous Talking and Singing Birds (Virginia Belmont

Pet expert and shop owner gives tips on caring for your beloved bird and
shows off her amazing canaries, which are trained to sing on command. This
chilling rendition of the Franz Schubert classic will bring you to tears.

unfortunately this is not the case
only 1/6 of the tickets have been reserved for Tiki News readers
This is due soley to the Kahiki being the owners of The Kahiki and
the backers of this event and therefore being able to make decisions
without my consent and it does not work the other way around (ie I am
not calling the shots when it comes to ticket sales)
The Kahiki began taking reservations without my knowledge and before
I had all the information I needed to annoucne that tickets were on
sale
Please contact the Kahiki and make reservations and tell the "otto
von stroheim sent me" in order to get on the Tiki News list as the
general reservations list is FULL

Subject: (exotica) Kahiki update (attempt #5)
This is the first official email announcement to my list sorry
for the delays, but I just received final confirmation.
Please read the entire text here and please feel free to forward it.
The Kahiki is arguably the best Tiki bar in the world. On Friday,
August 25 it will close at its current/original location and will
reopen a year later in downtown Columbus. The building dates back to
1960 and was recently placed on the Nationla Register of Historic sites
- - the only Tiki bar to do so and a rare honor for buildings from the
60s. Little has changed in its decor - all has been maintained but
plumbing and structural problems to the building have forced the owners
to make a financial decision to move.
You can view the kahiki at its own site and at the save the Kahiki
site
http://www.kahiki.com
http://savethekahiki.bizland.com
Join us for this historic celebration on the last day that the original
Kahiki can be viewed in its original state!
Bon Voyage, Kahiki - a closing party
Saturday, August 26, 2000
6 pm - 2 am
Tickets: $100.00 includes buffet dinner
3583 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio
To reserve tickets call 614-237-5425
or email

Private V.I.P. party featuring
the first mainland appearance ever by
Don Tiki the first new Exotica band since 1970
Don Tiki will play two full sets - 9 members of multi-talented combo
will be on hand to recreate authentic Exotica sounds
PLUS, all the way from Hollywood via Bosnia (that's true!)
King Kukulele
Recently shown in the NY Times for his triumphant antics at the biggest
ukulele festival in America King Kukulele is an unparalled entertainer
who knows over 300 tunes, takes requests, and mixes improv comedy into
his sets which musically span from the 1920s to the present
PLUS
all night long in the banquet room
enjoy obscure sounds from famous Exotica disc jockeys probably
including but not limited to:
WFMU Rex Doane (Brooklyn), Bar d'O co-founder Jack Fetterman (NYC), Les
Baxter chronicler Jeff Chenault (Columbus), Enoch Light brigadeer
Michael Toth (Cleveland), former Combustible Edisonite Brother Cleve
(Boston)
Sven-Tiki will be on hand (hopefully) signing his new book
There will be a vending table/gift shop selling Tiki wares of various
origin
THE MYSTERY GIRL
Revelers can tour the entire restaurant and bar and dine in the
restaurant or the downstairs banquet room which is usually not open to
the public. The mystery girl will be on hand to perform the mystery
drink ceremony. If you dare try this deadly concoction everyone around
you will know - the gong will sound signalling that you are about to
receive the hallowed bowl with the mysterious mixture. Then, out of
nowhere, comes a wahine you have never seen before (usually younger and
more scantily clad than your waitress) and in her hands she holds your
precious potion (or deadly drink depending on how many times you want
to try this!)
There will be a story about this event running on luxuriamusic.com
later this month
The Millionaire/Luxuria music is looking for volunteers to digitally
film the event and loan their footage so it can be posted on their site
in their video archives
email: millioniare@luxuriamusic.com
We are taking reservation via phone and email at the Kahiki
You must tell the Kahiki or write as the first sentence of your email
"Otto von Stroheim sent me"
in order to get on the reservation list. The Kahiki has had a large
response from local residents and has stopped taking reservations due
to the response!
The only way to get on the reservation list is to do it via the Tiki
News list
Reserving a ticket does not guarantee that you have a ticket
Right now I only have 50 tickets available so unless some of the
previous reservations cancel, which is very likely, that is what can
actually be sold to Tiki News readers
we are anticipating that the response will be overwhelming and some
people may get turned away
This event will sell out by Aug 1, 2000.
After all of you have had a chance to reserve this information will be
posted to my website for public consumption
Columbus is pretty close to Cleveland. You can fly into Cleveland and
rent a car and drive down. I think it is about 1.5 hours to Columbus.
Whatever you do, DO NOT fly SHUTTLE UNITED!
I will post to the list a listing of local vintage hotels that have
been checked out by Jeff Chenault or Michael Toth.
If you are receiving this and are not already a member of the Tiki News
mailing list please join by going to our website at tikinews.com and
filling in your email address. You can unsubscribe from the list at any
time by following the simple instructions at the bottom of each email
sent from the list. The list is totally private - even I don't know who
is on it! I will only post details of the show to my list from now til
Aug 25.
Lastly, I had another email software crash that wiped out my address
book and all old email sent and received for the past few months. If
you have corresponded with me during that time please write again and
let me know where we left off.
thanks
Otto

Well, unlike my good friend Brian I actually really dig Alfred Apaka--I
guess I've been lucky in avoiding the syrupy string-laden ones. An easy one
to find is the "very best of" double album he made shortly before his death.
You should also try to find any and all "Polynesians" records, very upbeat
and lively, a tight group. Can't remember any album titles except for Blue
Hawaii, but I think they're on Crown (?) on RED vinyl.
EZ does it,

I think you need to make limitations, even in the name of freedom. 20th century art
theory brought a libertarian widening of the notion of art in the name of freedom and
"self-determination", like "art is what you want to see in it". The disadvantage of
this process however is, that the definitions become very vague to an extent where
they actually don't mean anything anymore, so you can't talk about it anymore. The
often quoted extension of the notion of art by Joseph Beuys in fact creates a
destruction of the language of art and the communication about and through art. We all
can experience the results today when going to art exhibitions and being told that art
today "needs explanation", when art should rather speak by itself. It's like a bad
VTR-design, that needs an extensive complicated handbook to enable you to use it. For
the artists this twist of the notion of art meant, they were recognized and accepted
by the world of critics only when they fit into their theories; art became an
illustration of the theories of writers, instead of an independent voice in the
cultural world. I've been going through all of this as a long painful process and I'm
only using my experiences on the subject of Exotica when I demand that the definition
of it shouldn't be too wide. Of course it doesn't mean that I despise any ethnic
branch of music; in fact all the influences of Exotica come from there, it's just not
the same thing.

Joe Loco - "Puerto Rico '68" (Sunset Records)

cool Latin jazz/bossa??
Both of these albums are on those kooky "second-citizen" labels.....The =

Sounds neat. I have always liked Joe Loco records. I have another of his
Sunset LPs and one of his Columbia LPs and like both a lot. It'll be Latin
alright.

disappointing, especially their version of "Powerhouse" (the
reason i bought this single for.) It's just not as exotic as the
super-cool cover design, or the song titles (A go-go drum; Sneaky
Tiki; Tum-Tiki) OR, for that matter, their band name would like you
to believe, not at all. It's so close to plain surf music -- which
means to me: boring, uninspired, without humor, fantasy or subtlety.
