I might be making a mistake sharing this as I am a huge Rugolo fan and
collector, but I just saw a 1968 soundtrack he did up for sale on eBay ---
The Sweet Ride. Anyone ever heard it? Is it worth making a break the bank
bid on? The theme song was written by Lee Hazelwood & sung by Dusty
Springfield!!!! That in itself makes it worth buying, and also because it is
Pete, but it looks like it's going to be one of those way over $20.00 deals
and to be honest I don't like to spend more thanj $8.00 on any record.
Thanks for any advice/opinions anyone can offer.
Larry

"Sweet Ride" is available on a Dusty Springfield retrospective.
Yes, it is good, but I'd rather buy the CDs. I can't remember the
title. Mike Ace would know more about it - he taped it for me.

Vicki Sue Robinson
WILTON, Conn. (AP) -- Vicki Sue Robinson, whose 1976 hit ``Turn
The Beat Around,'' was among the disco anthems of that dancing
decade, died Thursday of cancer. She was 46.
Robinson's influences ranged from the blues of Dinah Washington to the
folk stylings of Pete Seeger. She made her singing debut at age 6 with her
mother at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. As a teen-ager, she appeared
on Broadway in ``Hair'' and ``Jesus Christ Superstar.''
When she hit the recording studio, she struck gold with ``Turn The Beat
Around,'' one of the biggest hits of the disco era. She was nominated for
a Grammy Award for best female vocalist and earned a Billboard Award
for the No. 1 pop album.
Robinson joined in a disco revival in the last few years, touring with K.C.
and the Sunshine Band, The Village People and Gloria Gaynor.
Jim Rogers
CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) -- Jim Rogers, the last surviving son of
cowboy humorist Will Rogers, died Friday of cancer. He was 84.
Jim Rogers served as the family's representative on the official Will
Rogers Memorial Commission of Oklahoma.
He appeared in three of Will Rogers' feature films. He was a cinema
cowboy in three Hopalong Cassidy westerns, made Army training films
with Rod Cameron, and co-starred with Noah Beery Jr. in ``Dudes are
Pretty People,'' ``Calaboose,'' and ``Prairie Chicken,'' all produced by
Hal Roach Jr. .

Does anyone else have the 1988 Anita Kerr album "In The Soul"? It is on
GAIA records and she intones Walt Whitman over her own drum machine and
synthesiser compositions? Anita plays the synths on it too and there are a
few wordless oohs and aahs in the background.
Something akin to a totally humourless version of the Rod McKuen
colaborations of the '60's with more than hint of the New Age.

Subject: (exotica) [obit] Toon Hermans
April 29, 2000
Toon Hermans, 83, Practitioner of the
Gentle Art of Fun Onstage
By MARLISE SIMONS,NYTimes
Toon Hermans, a beloved Dutch stage performer who was as
comfortable in poetry, song and folk philosophy as in making
people ache with laughter, died last Saturday in a hospital in Utrecht, the
Netherlands. He was 83.
Hermans, who spent his life in the spotlight, was buried privately on
Tuesday in Sittard, the small southern town where he was born on Dec.
17, 1916, and where he often returned. The death of Hermans, whose
first name was originally Antoine, was widely mourned in a nation where
half the population could sing along with his songs, and where, his age
notwithstanding, he was preparing another show.
Until the end of his life there was rarely a spare seat in any theater where
he performed, and he often had people crying with laughter. After his
death, the radio and television shows dedicated to him invariably recalled
what was perhaps his most touching tragic-comic act: the sketch of the
magician who finds that his dove is dead.
In another well-known sketch he posed as an ornithologist, delivering a
serious scientific lecture on different species of birds while imitating all
their sounds and mannerisms.
Many Dutch entertainers and cabaret artists said Hermans, whose hobby
was painting, had a great influence on them. "He painted with his brush,
with words and with music," said Paul van Vliet, the Dutch entertainer.
Seth Gaaikema, another cabaret artist, said: "He could put pinpricks into
everything that was inflated and he could make magic out of nothing. He
always remained a child."
He was a master of superior nonsense who was loved because his humor
was gentle and affectionate, never mean or scathing. In a country where
humor can be heavy-handed, his sketches and songs were always
nimble. One of his famous songs was about a little balloon; another was
about a man desperately searching for his clown nose to wear to a party.
He said he got his sense of fun and love of the surreal from the Limburgs
dialect he spoke when he was young and from his visits to fairs and the
circus, which was virtually the only entertainment in his small town.
He was never good at political satire or at joking about current affairs. "I
believe in the therapy of fun, and I'm not good at being cynical or
critical," he sometimes said, half-apologetically, when people called his
humor naive. "I just want to amuse people and share a bit of philosophy
but do something that is always accessible, not topical."
He said he drew much inspiration from Charlie Chaplin and Jacques Tati.
"I'm interested only in the human condition," he once said in an interview.
"In the little nuances, the moments of fun and sadness that make up
everybody's life."
At various times, Hermans tried to take his one-man shows abroad, but
they never flourished. Somehow his songs, poems and wordplay did not
work well in translation, perhaps because they were so intimately woven
into the Dutch language. But in the Netherlands, his short poems and
haiku-like nuggets of folk wisdom were so popular that they were printed
on birthday cards and even on wall tiles.
He stopped performing for a time after his wife, Rita, died of cancer in
1990. In her memory, he opened a counseling center for cancer patients.
He is survived by three sons.
On the day of his funeral, the theater in Sittard, where he had often
performed, debated whether to cancel that night's variety show. Instead,
the lead comedian, Bert Visscher, decided to appear in a black suit and
to dedicate the show to Hermans. "Toon would have called me a wet for
stopping the show," he told a tearful audience. "He always said: 'Play,
play. Life is also about playing."

Oh, so that's who he is. A few weeks ago I ALMOST bought five or six
albums of Mr. Hermans, but then culled them from my pile because I wasn't
really sure if I could do much with Dutch comedy.

Now that one I might have used. Wonder if those ten cent LPs are still
there at the St. Vincent de Paul's Thrift store. Too bad I couldn't zoom
in to find that particular sketch. Perhaps called "BIIRD LEEKTUR" :)

Well neither Dolby or DBX ever were intended to remove noise from the
*source*--just to minimize the effects of tape hiss. . .
But I don't trust any of that the automagic hiss-and-click-removing
software myself. What I have been doing (and this is for the truly
insane and obsessed only) is to remove the clicks manually, one at a
time.
I open the sound file in an audio-editor program, and listen to the
music with headphones, stopping at all the really intrusive clicks.
Then I zoom zoom zoom in on the waveform--and about 3/4 of the time
there is a really obvious jagged spike.
The software I use (SoundMaker, and orphan program for Mac) lets you
interpolate a straight line section over the spike. I'm sure most
programs have a "pencil" or something similar.
An astonishing fraction of the time, this totally removes the click
and it's completely inaudible. Every once in a while you get a
noticeable "thuck" or thump. In that case I Undo the straight line,
and select a slightly longer section, then use a really rapid
fade-out/fade-in (we are talking about a hundredth of a second here).
Again, this is almost always inaudible, though if you are really
paying attention you might sense a little "wobble" in the sound.
Another great trick if you happen to be working with a Mono original
is to paste a good waveform from one channel over a click on the
other one.
The downside is that you can burn up an hour or two on a single
track, going back and forth and chasing down smaller and smaller
clicks. . .

This is Walgreen's response from their consumer hotline website
as emailed to Ramon Bocanegra
Thank you for taking the time to email our Corporate offices. We were
pursuing
the restaurant site as a possible location for a new Walgreens drugstore.
However, about a week ago our management learned that the restaurant is
listed
on the National Registry of Historic Places. Walgreens has a policy not to
take
down buildings on that registry. Therefore, now that we are aware of the
restaurant's designation, we are re-evaluating our interest in the site. No
final decision has been made at this time, but we expect one soon.
It should also be noted that the restaurant owner WANTS to sell the
restaurant
and get out of that business. We understand that he isn't interested in
reopening the restaurant at another location. If Walgreens doesn't pursue
the
site, it's quite possible another company could buy the property and tear
down
the building.
In light of this

Let me get this straight...Walgreen's has a policy not to take down
registry properties, Kahiki is on the register...so what is there to
decide, unless Walgreen's is set to change its own policy?
In any case, this sounds like a good opportunity to press the case.
Also, a friend of Tiki needs to be found to buy the place and continue the

Well, not really... Don't know what the correct title is though.
Toon also made at least 1 record in English. Very sought after here in

There are some bossa nova easy melody instros and I think there are
2 versions of the main theme, 1 sung by Dusty Springfield
However, I can't remember playing ANYTHING from it on my show

Not much more, I'm afraid. The title song appears on "The Dusty Springfield
Anthology", a very fine 3-CD set which came out on Mercury in '97. Nice
mid-tempo song. Credited to Lee Hazlewood. Produced by John Franz.
Originally released as a Philips single in 1968.
Liners say:
"America tried to perk her chart numbers up with the Vegasy 'Sweet Ride,' a
Lee Hazlewood leftover from his sessions with Nancy Sinatra (and one of the
true rarities on this set)."
That's all I know.

Subject: (exotica) Stratosphere Boogie & a Bottle of Porter
The latest Goldmine(Grisman cover) has a story on Bear Family records.
The author says the "most consistently exciting" Bear Family release is
Bryant/West's "Flamin' Guitars," a 4-CD set of individual and duo
recordings by the boys, as well as their work on sessions with Spike
Jones, Tennessee Ernie and Bing Crosby (y'know, the guy that sang "Hey
Jude"). I'm happy enough with the first excellent Razor & Tie comp.
Now that I've veered toward country, I recently found an album that may
be of interest to the lister who was looking for drinking songs not long
ago - Porter Wagoner's 1968 LP "The Bottom of the Bottle."
Track list: Daddy and the Wine, Swinging Doors, The Bottom of the
Bottle, In the Shadows of the Wine, She Burnt the Little Roadside Tavern
Down, The Bottle Let Me Down, One Dime for Wine, Wine, Turn the Juke Box
Up Louder, I Threw Away the Rose, Bottle Bottle and Wino. Seems like a
"concept" LP.
Mostly country weepers with a few Merle Haggard standards. The standout
is the Wagoner-Parton(hello Dolly) composition "Wino." This one is
basically a recitation of the life of a wino, music enhanced by sound
effects of police sirens, feet running through alleys and clanking
bottles as the wino rummages thru trash cans. Wino noir....
Wish I had a scanner cuz the cover is great - Porter is holding up and
staring at a wine bottle - standing inside the bottle is a little Porter
dressed as a bum, who looks exactly like Tom Waits!
From the liner notes by Skid Row Joe: "Maybe we're weak or we just have
a problem that's bigger than we are. It eats away at the mind until we
can no longer face life alone. So...we turn to the bottle."
My local bargain bins are full of traditional/outlaw country LP's, which
can be a refreshing change of pace after all that crime jazz, down beat,
shibuya-kei and psychedelic-Euro-scat music.
Have a nice W-E-E-K-E-N-D,
Skid Row Jim

Heads up, theres another free emperor norton records comp floating around, I
got mine in the mail probably because I got on their mailing list when I
requested the last free comp cd. I looked at their website
http://www.emperornorton.com and there wasnt anything about it. But for
those of you who got the last one, theres probably one coming your way if
you dont already have it.
This is a good one with a couple of remixes by Dj Me Dj You, Arling and
Cameron remixes, a new Air song, a new Fantastic Plastic Machine song from
their forthcoming single, a Roger Manning Jr song. As well as other new
stuff.
Gotta love that label

Have you heard his song called "Rubber Room?" Pretty wacko.

Kenny can really play (according to sax players I work with whose opinions I
respect). He has tremendous technique, and works very hard at it. I have
heard that after concerts, instead of drinking and chasing women (like a
reasonable person), he'll go back to his hotel room and practice for 3
hours..............
It's a shame when great chops get into the wrong hands

You guys must have some highly trained ears.
I run a light (keyword: light) pass of Sound Forge declicking and denosing on
almost every CD I burn and am very satisfied with the results.
The reduction in pops and surface noise vs whatever frequencies I've lost
(and am too insensitive to detect anyway) seems like a fair enough trade off.

Regarding Sound Forge, I find that the Vinyl Restoration Plug-In, when set
to moderate sensitivity, gets almost all the pops out without creating any
detectible (to my ears) distortion. Should I get my hearing checked?

I always enjoy a good OST and think The Sweet Ride is one of them. Just a
couple of killer tracks - which many soundtracks have - make it worthwhile
even if the rest of it comes up short.
The Sweet Ride has a number of good tracks, I don't think you'll be
disappointed, Larry Sparrow.
do you know about the movie? basically its about beach bums looking for
action. then J. Bisset gets murdered and things get a little more serious.
It's a Now Generation score providing a backdrop for sex, parties, surf,
cycling.
Look for bob denver as "choo choo" Burns, the off-the-wall jazz pianist, if
you ever see the movie.
Pete Rugolo. Didn't he do the music for that goofy hippie psychedelic dance
in one of the later episoides of Lost In Space?

That reminds me... a while back I ran across a country album with the
classic title of:
"Booze Is My Pal"
Can't remember the song titles, but they ran along the lines you would
expect, including the title track. Can't remember the artist -- a
middle-aged or older male, seemed to have some miles on him, not a big
name. Not a major label release either. I passed it by because the album
AND the cover were in pretty rough (and smelly) shape. Anyone else ever
seen it? Heard it? Thanks.

Another great country boozin' album I picked up at in a small town thrift is
Johnny Bond's "Ten Little Bottles and Other Tall Tales for Boozers" in
"authentic High Fidelity" (it says that right on the front) There's plenty
of drinkin' humor southern style and songs about drinkin' like "Three Sheets
In the Wind" "Barrell House Bessie", "Sadie was a Lady", "Sick Sober and
Sorry" and of course his hit "Ten Little Bottles" in which Johnny proceeds
to get more and more drunk as the song goes on. Its a hoot. Its on Starday
records out of Nashville Tenn which is responsible for most of the truck
drivin'- sacred country records and tapes I run across here in southern
Indiana.
A fine, fine record indeed.
I think I might have played it once. It will make for good mixing. (forgive
the pun please)
"whats the difference between a drunk and an alcoholic?" (what) "Us drunks
dont have to attend all those dang ol' meetings"- Johnny Bond

that's how I do it, too -- there's a pencil tool in both ProTools and Peak
that works beautifully for this.
Curiously in ProTools, the sound of the click goes away, but the spike
still resides in the waveform. Could never figure out why, but since the
click is gone, I really don't care (although I am curious).
