I'll take that question on. Northern Soul is a British term primarily
referring to American soul music of the 6T's (although time has made this
definition evolve through the 7T's and even into the 8T's "Modern Soul"
sound). It must have a strong beat--hopefully emphasized by a tamborine--and
a Motown flavor, but obscurity rates highly. It is almost always vocal,
preferably (by me anyway) by a group as opposed to a solo artist. And it was
very popular among the English "northern" regions where the soul
"all-nighter" was made famous. The DJ's pride themselves on having totally
obscure 45's and often spent an inordinate amount of time removing labels
from their 45's so that other collectors would not know the song, title, or
artist of the record they were hearing. Some stories have it that shipments
via ocean-liner to Britain from the U.S. were often weighted down in the bow
of the ship with old 45's no longer deemed saleable. DJ's would supposedly
grab from the shipments and become the "sole proprietors" of these rekkids.
During the 8T's the Kent U.K. label licensed and released MANY compilations
of "Northern Soul" and to this day the "Goldmine" label (known for direct
vinyl to CD process!) continues to pump out obscure Northern Soul
compilations of formerly rejected mid-6T's Motown-flavored soul 45's. It is
indeed American....I could dig up a groovy article on this if any interest
continues....JB

Does anyone have any info on the Group called The Bogmen? They play songs
like The Twist, Rock Around the Clock, Lucille, Tie A Yellow Ribbon Around
The Old Oak Tree,etc.
As well as a whole slew of traditional jigs and reels. The traditional tunes
are played on accordian and tin whistle, but the pop tunes are played on
what sounds like a Rhythm Ace and A Beat Box. They have no sense of time and
it sounds as if they have never even heard the songs before and are reading
chord changes off song sheets.

Read this on the Wind list, by a certain Bob Notes:
In many live concerts for major acts, much of the material is "lip synced".
There is too much at stake to involve any risk.=20
If you have a concert filling a football stadium, and Whitney Houston or
Mariah Carey has a severe cold and cannot sing, would you want to refund
the tickets to a few thousand angry fans? The promoters don't, so they pre
record all or the majority of the performance and have the singer lip sync.
I have played in the "hired gun" band to a couple of those events. The
vocal is on the click track. Usually the talking between songs is real, the
sound man turns on the singer's mic for that and cuts it as soon as the
song starts. Then the singer can sing along with the click track, so he or
she looks like he or she is singing, but the audience hears the click track
(without the click, of course, that only goes to the musicians).
I was in the audience of a concert when the tape broke (this was in the
1970s) and all that was left was the on stage drummer coming through the
PA. He was playing along with the tape. It was the wake up call for me, I
have kept my eyes and ears open ever since then. It is done like this more
often than not.
When I was in a band that opened for major concerts, I got to talk to a lot
of different star acts backstage. I had more than one person tell me it was
more fun playing before they got famous. It was more real then. Now they
feel like part of a machine.
Makes me wonder, whether you know of any memorable breakdowns.
Cheers, Ton

Yes. If you're willing to give it one more try, be sure you have VERSION 2.0
of Sonic Foundry's Noise Reduction Plug-In Pack. It has four modules: 1)
Click and Crackle Removal, 2) Clipped Peak Restoration, 3) Noise Reduction (a
confusing name because this is the name of the overall product, too), and 4)
Vinyl Restoration. The best declicker is #1. I recommend DO NOT use Vinyl
Restoration. VR does work, but not at well as Click and Crackle Removal,
which was upgraded significantly with Version 2.0. I usually use the "default
for vinyl recordings" setting.

Hi, all,
I've not been following this thread too closely because I use different
equipment which, USED PROPERLY, works great, and only leaves
psycho-acoustic (not real or measurable) changes... great improvement in
audibility and clarity without affecting the program material CAN be
had, with the right tools and the right operator. I think the software
many of the listees are using and talking about are very good in the
right hands, but also difficult to maneuver through. I'll answer
whatever i can privately about this, but i'm only really proficient in
sonic solutions no-noise (all modules) and CEDAR (not the boxes, which i
can work fine but don't own!) but the software plug-ins for SADiE,
including de-thump, which is like magic.
I am not trying to be a wise guy about this, only to say that
restoration is definitely possible without destructive artifacts, but at
a great cost!

Now we are very off topic but this is an interesting point you have brought
up. There are stories of ELO being booed off stage in the early 1980's for
their obvious lip syncing. I saw Kansas right after they had their first two
big hits and they were blatanly lip syncing to a tape during parts of their
concert. In general I don't trust any large colesium rock concert event to
be real. It's gotten to be like wrestling.
If you want to hear/see "live" music you've gotta go to a club.

Tasty! This is listed on AMC, this coming Saturday night at 10:00pm,
11:00pm, 4:00am and 5:00am (eastern zone).
Whether this means it will be the same show run 4 times, or two shows run
twice each, I have no idea. Watch your local listings for further details.

Subject: (exotica) HEAR showandtellmusic (Michel Magne, JIm Fassett, Charles Camilleri, Gary Schneider, other freaks)
Hey guys,
The most obvious flaw with the showandtell website is the fact that you
cant listen to any of the recordings. its ridiculous (and will be changing as
soon as i get the time to make the sound bytes, i promise). In the
meanwhile, heres a few songs i put together for Larry and the CSMMM
e-radio site. i came out pretty good so maybe take a listen. Show
"airs" tonight or Mon am, heres the URL:
http://www.thebranflakes.com/fp/
the stupid part is, most of these tracks are from albums i havent yet posted
on the site! its silly. they've all been sitting in my "READY TO GO"
folder for
a while now. All of these with maybe 1 exception will be up on my site
before long.
And,,,
heres a copy of the track list & show notes to read if your interested.
Lately my big thing is people
creating there own languages. I had to leave a few out (Jimmie Haskell,
Raymond Scott, Jean Jacque Perrey, others) cuz they didnt flow musically.
Also the language of animals is good stuff, especially when it's simulated by
humans. Sooooo, here's a run down :
1): Elsa Popping (Andre Popp with Pierre Fatsome), Java
from the album "Delirium in Hi-fi"
Don't really need to introduce this one. Elsa Popping is from outer
space and speaks all Martian dialects fluently. Check out the cover here ...
http://showandtellmusic.com/pages/thrift/delirium.html
2): Michel Magne, Perfida
from the album "Tropical Fantasy"
Tropical Fantasy has all kinds of good banter going on in it. Mostly
from a bunch of synthetic birdies, but also other crazy jungle creatures.
This album is a brilliant satire, and it's obvious that he was following
Martin Denny pretty closely at that point in his career. TF is the closest
thing to a "missing link" between MD and Andre Popp (Elsa Popping) Ive
ever heard.
3): Jim Fassett, Wood Thrush (at 1/8 speed)
from the album "Music and Bird Songs"
Fassett is a guy I just can't speak highly enough of. He's a certain kind of
genious/geek who never did, and never will, get the recognition he should have.
I found this Columbia 10" ("Music and Bird Songs") and am assuming it's the
precursor to "Symphony of the Birds" (his Grand Masterpiece in my opinion).
Listen to the 2nd movement of the Symphony and you'll know exactly what I'm
talking about. This guy had a great working relationship with our feathered
freinds and they seemed to both speak each others language.
4): Rex Kona, Bird Train
from the album "Wild Orchids"
Standout track from RK's exotic contribution, "Wild Orchids". High octane
stuff,
playful and truly great.
5): John McFarland, The Chimp and the Bumble Bee
from the album "Provacatif"
One of the goofier tracks from (Ellington protege) JM's lone exotic title.
Another good one is about headhunters. Pretty great stuff. Theres also a
VERY MUCH Ellington-derived (for better or for worse) version of Watusi
on this album thats worth mention. Check out the cover here ...
http://showandtellmusic.com/pages/fancy/provocatif.html
6): John Evans (with feature percussionist, Chaino), Eso Es el Amor
from the album "Exotic Percussion and Brilliant Brass"
Here's an album that on the outside looks like budget label shit. Inside
though,
is some of the wildest "jungle creature dialogue ive ever heard. Its all
pretty
goofy (good-goofy), but pretty frickin wild. Actually, the only wilder jungle
creatures ive heard came from Michel Magne. The album is pretty fantastic, with
a few standouts and some cheese you have to wade through. Plus, theres "guest
percussionist" Chaino laeadin the way on the beats and freaking out with his
Dark Continent Styley vocal cries and shrieks. Pretty rad.
7): Charles Camilleri, Jungle Fantasy
from the album "Spectacular Accordians"
One of my favorite Space Age instrumentals. Totally weird and super smokin'
version. Unfortunately, it's the only great song on the album. It's arranged
by the guy who wrote Jungle Fantasy. Check out a (mono version) of the cover
here ...
http://showandtellmusic.com/pages/thrift/accordians.html
8): Joe Maize and his Cordsmen, Misirlou
from the album "Presenting Joe Maize and his Cordsmen"
Three Suns meets the Three Stooges with steel accordian, steel guitar, and
stand up bass. Absolutely one of the most awesome instro albums ive found.
Check out the cover here ...
http://showandtellmusic.com/pages/thrift/joemaize.html
9): Joe Vento, Green Dolphin Street
from the album "The Many Moods of Joe Vento"
Hyperactive moog and organ cut from Lounge Anti-Hero, Joe Vento. As far as I
know, he has 3 albums, but this is the only one I've found. Has exotic
versions of
The Godfather Theme, Yellow Bird, My Island in the Sun, and others. TOTALLY
lo-fi and one of the only truly entertaining homemade lounge records I've ever
heard. Pretty great stuff.
10): John Thomas, Hot Tip
from the album "Big Beat on the Organ"
Here's a wild garage/junk yard funk sounding number from some random mediocre
jazz/shmaltz album i found called "Big Beat on the Organ". Its the only
good song
on the album, and is one of those cases where one song is enough and Ive
held onto
it. pretty cool.
11): Pete Drake, Ain't She Sweet
from the album "Talking Steel Guitar"
My new favorite recording artist. This is the 1st PD song I ever heard, and
it just slayed
me dead instantly. You know how they say good poets are able to put into
words what "the
people" cant nessasarily express ? well, musicians like this tell volumes
about my personal
outlook on art/music/life in general. I love this guy and most other
people who utilize
The Power of Lightheartedness in Art. Another guy who spoke in different
languages.
(also, this is my favorite new dance song)
12): The U.S. Air Force, Psychological Warfare, Public Address From C-47
from the album "Sound Effects U.S. Air Force Firepower"
Check the cover here ...
http://showandtellmusic.com/pages/thrift/airforce.html
13): Gary Schneider, Green Tambourine
from the album "Just For Fun Just For Friends"
Best homemade lounge record ive ever heard (or expect to hear). GS creates
a sound unlike
any other with his special concoction of bizarro lead (and guest)
vocals,drum machine, synthesizer,
electric organ, sound effects, and a jerry-rigged version of a Sonovox.
Truly incredibly strange
stuff.
14): The U.S. Air Force, Simulated Nuclear Bomb Drop by F-105
from the album "Sound Effects U.S. Air Force Firepower"
See scan link above. The end.

I've heard that some unaired footage was located and was either included with

Good Hello,
We would like to invite you to visit "The Claudine Longet Audio Archives."
A comprehensive audio site covering Miss Longet's recording career at,
http://www.thebranflakes.com/mofo/claudine/index.html
A bit of a background on C.L. (taken from who2.com),
"Originally from France, Claudine Longet was a Las Vegas showgirl when
crooner Andy Williams discovered her. In her few TV and film appearances,
she was typecast as the innocently foxy mademoiselle. Given a contract by
A&M Records, she recorded mostly soft covers of songs by popular rock
groups. It wasn't until after she'd left Williams, however, that she really
got famous. In 1976 she shot and killed champion skiier Vladimir "Spider"
Sabich, her long-time boyfriend. After a highly publicized murder trial,
Longet was convicted of criminal negligence and sentenced to 30 days in
jail."
All songs stream in RealAudio and you will need at least a 56k dialup to
listen to the selections. Almost all of the encoded files are in Stereo for
a better listening experience.
The 'Audio Archives' were set up to compliment the 'Cuddle Up With Claudine'

They're great. I have the four CD Bear Family box of theirs. Capitol
Records had the most incredible C&W division in the fifties. It was
run by Cliffie Stone, a local LA impressario who organized live
radio broadcasts, TV shows and dances. Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant
were regulars on Stone's TV show which also included Tennessee Ernie
Ford and the Collins Kids. There are a couple of CDs of these
broadcasts that include live Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant songs.
They were just as incredible live.
If you like this, I would recommend a few other CDs...
"The Lightning Fingers of Roy Clark for Swinging, Dancing and
Listening" (Razor & Tie 7930182193-2)
Buck Owens & His Buckaroos: Instrumental Classics (I don't
have the manufacturer info on this one)
If all you know of Roy Clark (and Buck Owens for that matter) is
what you saw on Hee Haw in the 70s, you know nothing about them.
They are both incredibly talented and amazing performers. The
Roy Clark CD has some of the fastest and most accurate playing
I've ever heard. Buck Owens' stuff is great too. If you can't
find the instrumental CD, the two CD set of Buck Owens on Rhino
is a comprehensive collection of his work. Buck has a live radio
broadcast out of his restaurant in Bakersfield every Saturday
night. He still has all of his chops intact.
Chet Atkins: Guitar Legend The RCA Years (2CD Buddha Records
74465 99673 2)
Chet Atkins has that weird otherworldly sound that Les Paul had,
but to me is much more listenable. His version of "Chinatown, My
Chinatown" is positively inhuman in its complexity.
Country & Western music may be dead and buried today for all intents
and purposes, but if you pick up stuff from the fifties, you will
find some gems that you like even if you think you don't like
country music.

Add to that list, Hank Thompson's "Six Pack To Go". A whole album of

It's great to see that dear old Toon is mentioned in NY Times. He really
was a one of a kind performer. Bye, bye Toon, we'll miss ya.

This is the review from Forced Exposure, that was posted on this list a
while ago:
WILP, CHARLES: Charles Wilp Fotografiert Bunny CD (ATA WR74).
"No other German has embodied the breakaway from the 50s into
modern times so well as Charles Wilp. A Man Ray student, turned
artonaut, Dokumenta 5 artist, photographer, an advertising
conceptualist, conductor and a space age media artist. Whether
spectacularly blowing up his racing car, building an UFO bungalow
on the roof of his D=FCsseldorf home, or overcoming gravity in a NASA
centrifuge simulator, the LP written in the Sun Year 1965, titled
Charles Wilp fotografiert Bunny -- a light and floating melange -- has
at Ata Tak's specific wish, been re-released as a CD. A world first in
psychedelic TV advertising in 1969 -- 'Africola' showing three lightly
clad women dancing behind a water covered screen (Amanda Lear's,
Marsha Hunt's and Donna Summer's first TV appearance) -- Bunny
was never available in the shops, but was produced together for 16
organizations which had contracted Wilp to create their company
designs. Over 500,00 free record copies were distributed to
employees and clients in the same companies. What is surprising
about Bunny-Musik is the elegant stylistic assuredness and relaxed
work out which is really unusual for a German orchestra. Peter
Thomas made some close observations of these recordings, noting
influences from A.C. Jobim, Frank Sinatra and Claus Ogermann.
This possibly had to do with the hottest summer of the century in 1965,
when this piece was composed. More probable is that Charles Wilp
developed a feeling for music and space through his mother, who
accompanied Richard Tauber through the world as a silent film pianist,
as well as through encounters with the so called 'rocket men' he knew,
including Karl Oberth, Paul Nebel, Werner von Braun, Fritz von Opel
and Paul Valier. One thing however is certain - this record is too good
remain unreleased ......... That opinion is shared by Daniel Miller,
The Gentle People, Tipsy, Stereo Total, Thomas Fehlmann, A Certain
Frank, Andreas Dorau, Schlammpeitziger, Stockhausen & Walkman
and many others who have expressed willingness to make a remix
for Charles Wilp. This will shortly be released under the name
Michaelangelo in Space, a name shared by the space art module to
be designed and built by Wilp as the first Art-in-Space Gallery as
well the first Space Art Academy. This is to be docked onto the
newly developed international ISS space station - which will of
course include the CD onboard! The first CD in space!" $15.00
And Magnus (still here, Magnus?) wrote this about it:
Just got the cd from Atatak and its great! Nice sooooooft and WILD
arrangements with lots of screaming organs (!), sensually sleazy and funn=
y
too. And i really love the spoken word bits in german, the language I
hated in school (sorry Mo, it had to come out :) ).
My recommendation is to get this cd. Its different. Und kaufen eine Kamer=
a
und start fotografieren Bunnys =FCber ganze WELT!
And Mo about the remix CD:
The long-awaited release of THE BUNNY REMIXES CD, the tribute
compilation chock-full of hot new tunes, cover versions of tracks from
the Charles Wilp fotografiert Bunny album, is out now - and hopefully
available everywhere. In North-America it should be distributed by
Caroline.
Details can be seen and heard on the Ata Tak homepage at
http://atatak.com
Participants are:
Yasuharu Konishi (Pizzicato 5) - Maxwell Implosion
Haruomi Hosono (Y.M.O.) - Tipsy - i:o:l - a certain frank
Thomas Fehlmann - Sunroof - Schlammpeitziger
Andreas Dorau - Donna Regina - Stereo Total
Don Tiki - To Rococo Rot - bad examples a.o.
The music is quite diverse and ranges from hip lounge, "breakbeat",
pleasantly calm melodic pieces, to Latino-influenced and
"deconstructivistic" avantgarde electronic. My personal favorite is the
track by i:o:l, which is nothing but a simple song, but I haven't heard
anything as beautiful as this for quite a while. Btw: Behind the group
Sunroof hides nobody less than "The Normal", legendary Mute-Boss Daniel
Miller and Depeche Mode-soundengineer Gareth Jones. It's great to
actually hear all these musicians, that I have seen for a while as
somehow connected, develop their style on one album in comparison to
each other. I had never believed that Ata Tak would manage to bring all
of these bands and artist together, but they did. And the result, I
think, was worth the effort
best wishes,
Marco (who wrote the liner notes for the CD)

Subject: (exotica) Dave's True Story
Hey folks,
I had joined a while back, then had to unsub due to the birth of my
daughter--now almost two months old. Things have slowed down here at home
(or we've learned to embrace the chaos), so I'm back.
I wanted to draw everybody's attention to an article in today's
(Sunday,
April 30) New York Times. They do a nice piece on a great band called
Dave's True Story. I used to see them a lot about five years ago when I
was
dating a woman who worked with Kelly Flint, the singer. They even opened
for my band once.
They are a great little lounge act. Dave Cantor writes scathingly
witty
songs--mostly about sex. It's like Cole Porter collaborating with Prince
(at least lyrically). The music is usually small ensemble--Dave on guitar,
drums, double-bass and maybe a horn or two.
I haven't heard their last disc (Sex Without Bodies) or the new one
(Unauthorized), but I would bet a lot of you folks would like them.
