Yes, Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant boggle the mind. I think of their music as
the aural equivalent of Googie architecture.
They played on jillions of west coast country sessions, or even on Spike
Jones and Stan Freberg sessions. They were also regulars on the "Hometown
Jamboree" local TV show. And in their spare moments, they cut these
instrumental blasts of their own.
The sessions were very off the cuff and live. Speaking of no effects, the
two of them were recorded through 1 microphone! They set their amps up at
an angle to each other, placed the mic between them and controlled the
balance with the volume controls on their instruments!
Besides the two CD comps on Razor & Tie, Bear Family has one of their usual
comprehensive boxed sets. I think it's called "Flaming Guitars" or
something like that.
Movie note: Jimmy Bryant makes a 1 or 2 song appearance in the low budget
flick, "The Skydivers".
Joe Maphis *is* a helluva picker, but for me he doesn't have the Googie
swirl that you get with West & Bryant. Bear Family has a well-packed single
CD comp of Maphis tracks: "Flying Fingers". It includes the whole EP that
he and Larry Collins did together. They used to do a trick with the ol'
double-neck Mosrite, where l'il Larry would play the lower neck, and big
ol' Joe would reach around and play the upper neck for a one-guitar duet.

I also recommend "All you need is love" with a lovely version of the Bee
Gees' "Holiday" and "Sounds" with a groovy version of "The beat goes on".
But you can't really compare any of this stuff with the vocal groups of the
fifties so the standard is a bit lower.
I don't like to repeat myself here more than twice a year but my "theory"
is that in the sixties, vocal groups thought they were hip just for
covering the tunes they covered. It was hip enough to be doing "Up Up and
Away" so they didn't actually have to distinguish themselves with their
arrangements. Or so they thought.
And so you get this change where for instance, Ray Conniff's groovy
wordless vocal records turn into this stuff like "Happiness Is"...
..which I know some people on this list LOVE but I hope it's not for the
actual vocal arrangements.
There are exceptions but I think for the most part, the groups that
inherited the vocal arrangement traditions were the "original" groups and
not the "cover bands".
Meaning you have to go to the Fifth Dimension, the Association, the Beach
Boys etc. rather than the Billy Vaughn or Percy Faith Singers.
But speaking of the Beach Boys, check out the 101Strings (and Alshire
Singers) "Play and Sing the songs of the Beach Boys".
And also check out a group I discovered through softpop afficianado Jimmy B...

Subject: (exotica) Marlene Van Der Planck/ more vinyl transfer
Interesting to hear Marlene Van Derplanck getting a mention. I found a promising LP by her a couple of months ago in a nyc street market.
It was on an obscure New York label which I had not heard of before, but the musicians included the usual suspects - al caiola, phil bodner etc.
Anyway, I picked it up mainly in the hope of hearing a vocal version of the 'mission impossible' theme.
Unfortunately there were no lyrics, but it was a great, unusual scat version. She also sings Jobim's 'Wave' and Schifrin's 'down here on the ground', although the rest of the album is quieter...
btw, thanks to whoever recommended the 'Vibert/Cole - stop the panic' album a few months back - I picked it up and have really enjoyed the fusion of steel guitar and beats.
I have a basic question about transferring vinyl into digital format.
I just got a PC set up at home, but it has a very basic sound card, which I'm currently blaming for the poor quality of my vinyl to cd experiments. Is there any point in me continuing to attempt recording vinyl with such a basic card? Or are there some settings I should be playing with first (other than basic recording level)? Any off-list advice would be appreciated.

Haven't used these tools but I have had no luck over the years with any noise
reduction system, specifically Dolby! I alway record without it and never switch
it on during playback. It simply cuts out too much of the sound! I can't see too
many basic cleanup tools doing a much better job. I'd always
heard the much more sophisticated (and expensive) DBX system
worked much better but have never had the opportunity to test it
out.

My ears have never liked Dolby either, be it type B, C or HX-Pro. It seemed
to produce the same results as turning the treble down -- and who wanted to
do that?!?
But DBX is indeed the bomb. It uses a compression/expansion scheme, but
doesn't fiddle with the EQ. In the early-80s, I got this pretty cheap
Technics cassette deck with DBX (still in operation). DBX works great --
cuts the noise, greater dynamic range, and you can record with really hot
levels. Very forgiving of overloads too. Unfortunately, within a few years
after that, you couldn't find consumer decks with DBX any more. Some sort
of skullduggery there?
Also unfortunately, I eventually stopped using the DBX encoding because I
was too worried about winding up with tapes that couldn't be played back if
this deck ever dies. Or for compatibility with other folks' decks. Too bad,
it really worked well. Everything that Dolby never delivered. My cassette
multi-tracker also has DBX, and again, it simply does its job and doesn't
make itself known.
The pro-line DBX gear is outboard rack-mount stuff, so theoretically, I
guess you could hook it up with any deck.

All old and not all that good. It DOES have a Mohawks track "Soul Organ"
which is killer and two others (I forget the titles) that I liked a lot. If
you follow my general rule that a truly good song is worth $5.00 then you get
your money's worth. But if you think that you should pay thrift shop prices
for great stuff then fuhgedaboudit. And the track listing is f___ed up so you
don't really know which is which. And there's no way you can contact the
thief who released the stuff...JB

This one is on Dolby and Dolby DBX and why they don't work.
The basic principle of the original Dolby system is that tape hiss was a big
problem at the time. But, if you remove the frequency where tape his occurs
you lose the high end. So Dolby is designed to boost the high end in the
recording process, and then decrease it some in the playback process. Thus
you lose hiss but keep the high end. But it doesn't work very well. I have
always hated it, be it standard Dolby, B or C.
DBX was a much more complicated system, as mention, of compressing the music
and then reexpanding it (similar to what happens with stereo FM radio signals
when received on a radio.) As mentioned in a previous post it worked great
- --- ON SOME UNITS. Other tape deck manufactureres put in Dolby DBX but with
a cheaper chip and the result was what was called a "breathing effect" where
the frequencies heard in the music would fluctuate during play back and it
sounded godawful. Now, this one only on the cheap versions. However, due to
these decks DBX got a very bad reputation and pretty much disappeared as a
feature on cassette decks.
I may be wrong, but I seem to reacall the Dolby C came out about that time as
an upgrade on DBX. I have two high dollar Denon cassette decks, both with
dolby C. At first I thought, wow, what a great improvement! But after
making a few tapes noticed that I really didn't like the way it sounded, and
that while it eliminates tape hiss totally the resulting change in sound of
the music was too dramatic.
OK. I will only talk about records from now on. I promise.

The Match, recommended, actually played to me at Bar d'O by Brother Cleve,
who got his copy after it was recommended by one of the myriad of Japanese
collectors he seems to know, is STILL highly recommended after repeated
listening. Its a really special album and the shops aren't aware of it and
charge between $2 and $4. I can also recommend The Novi Singers, a 6T's
Polish vocal group and Les Masques, a 6T's Samba/Bossa vocal group, whose
"Sexopolis" compilation inclusion was one of the best trax on the disc. Both
were available from Dusty Groove a month or two ago. JB

Let's not forget Jackie And Roy. Jackie Cain is a great jazz singer. Her
husband Roy Kral isn't such a great singer, but a good piano player. Thier
earliest LPs were great modern jazz stuff, in a kind of Annie Ross way.
Killer. Then in the mid 60's they started doing pop cover version LPs.
These are fantastic also but in a different way. They were very now sound,
somewhat like Free Design in a way but way more Now Sound, if that makes any
sense. They did a great one called "Changes" which has a wordless vocal of
The Beatles Norwegian Wood, and a killer Now SOund all the way version of The
Beatles song The Word.
Regarding Anita Kerr --- I have heard those radio station jingles she did for
a Chicago station and they are outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also
highly recommend are the "We Dig Mancini" and "Reflects On The Hits Of Burt
Bacharach And Hal David." The later has an amazing a cappella version of "A
House Is Not A Home", while maybe not the most modern of vocal arrangements
is still AWE INSPIRING!
