Subject: (exotica) Kahiki Update!
Hello Everyone,
This information was gathered from an article in the latest issue of
"Columbus Alive" a local paper here in Columbus.
>Last Week, stories surfaced that the Kahiki might close its doors, the rows
of bamboo tables to be replaced by the sterile aisles of a Walgreens
pharmacy. The announcement upset historical preservationists and
retro-hepcats, who are clutching onto one of the few remaining monuments of
East Broad Street's heyday.
>But after some initial investigating, "Columbus Alive" stumbled onto a
pleasant discovery -- there's still hope for the Polynesian palace. It
seems last week's media attention is giving the drug store giant second
thoughts.
"We're reassessing what our plans are for the site," Michael Polzin,
spokesperson for Walgreens, told "Alive" on Friday. "The situation has
changed a little bit."
>The reason for the change of heart? Polzin said Walgreens management was
unaware of Kahiki's designation on the National Register of Historic Places.
The restaurant earned that distinction in 1997 at the request of Nathalie
Wright, national register coordinator for the Ohio Historic Preservation
Office. Though Polzin said Walgreens' corporate policy forbids the company
from tearing down buildings on the national registry, he said there has been
no final decision on whether to redevelop the site. "We're trying to get in
touch with all the parties involved," he said.
>If the Kahiki can be saved from the clutches of the drug store, there is a
way to preserve the landmark for generations to come. Simply being on the
national register doesn't preclude a building's demolition, but being on the
Columbus Register of Historic Properties does. All the owner has to do is
request a nomination, which Columbus City Council would have to approve.
While the city typically requires a building to be 40 years old for
eligibility, as the Kahiki will be next year, exceptions are made for those
already on the national register.
>So, if the Kahiki could find an owner willing to nominate it for the city's
register, it would be legally impossible for anyone to destroy the fabled
building. Owners would have to get permission from the historic
preservation office before they could change a thing. Kahiki owner Michael
Tsao would still lay claim to all the funky Polynesian artifacts inside the
restaurant. Last week, Tsao was unavailable for comment; Kahiki employees
said he was out of town.
>Media reports have speculated that the restaurant may relocate somewhere
along the Scioto riverfront. Young hipsters--the cool cats who have revived
cocktail culture, swing dancing and Sinatra--have also reveled in the
Kahiki's authentic kitschiness in the last few years. But would a
transplanted Kahiki be able to carry on its campy legacy? "They could move
a lot of the gaudy memorabilia inside but so much of that place is the
building"
That was most of the story. To me it seems we need to get the owner to
preserve this place on the Columbus Register. This is the Number One
priority. I have emailed the Kahiki and tried to contact Michael Tsao but
still have heard nothing back. We must all stand together and make sure
that the Kahiki does not fall fate to this incomprehensible disaster.
Hope this helps out guys,
See Ya,
Jeff

I've listened to it a couple of times and like it. Busy Exotica in the
Baxter vein. Jane Fondle (who we haven't heard from for a while) raved
about this LP last summer.

I saw her in late June of '92 here in Boston at Symphony Hall. I thought I
had at last gotten a chance to see a living legend. Alas the show weak and
slow. She spent far too much time in those kind of tiresome ballads she
sometimes leans toward. No "Sugar In My Bowl". No "I Wish I Knew How It Would
Feel To Be Free". None of the grabbers that had made me a fan in the first
place. I almost fell asleep......JB

See, I think it should be saved, etc.etc., but what many people seem to
overlook is that Walgreens can't just TAKE a building. Mike Tsao has to
want to sell it, and, from what I overheard at the restaurant, it sounds
like he does. Maybe Walgreens made him an offer he can't refuse...

I love it. It's an Inca version similar to the full orchestra Baxter
material with chanting vocals. It's great, I think it's comparable to some
of Baxter's best work.
I have it on CD so if anyone wants to stop over and listen to it, bring some
cookies. Today's coffee is Kona from the South face of the mountain. I
think a lizard died in the bag I have, although that adds something magical
to the taste. If you can't make it by the house and you want to listen, drop

Subject: (exotica) Favorite LPs an Such for April / May 2000
Hello,
Just a small list of what's rocking my world in the "Exotica" vein which is
pertinent:
LARRY YOUNG'S FUEL "Spaceball"
Awesome funky, rare groove type madness. O.K. use of moog, but very funk,
especially on the track "spaceball" which starts out with Larry make the beat"
Wow-wuh--bbbb--Wow-wUH -- bbbbbb-Baow-wuh... repeat. I just transferred it to
CD along with Ebony Godfather's "Moog Fluting" LP.
AQUAVIVA - 12 Who Sing Of Revolutione
First track is called Robot. It's just about the neatest thing I've found on
LP this year.
A mimiced robot talking about a psychedelic experience. 1min 42 sec.. These
are why we all feverishly collect. ~sigh~
OFFBEAT - A Red Hot Sound Trip
From1996, the Red-Hot-Aids people put this one together. Features Skylab,
Barry Adamson, EBN, DJ Spooky and My Bloody Valentine + more. Very strange,
mellow trippy tunes.
TRANS-AM - Self titled
From 1999. This is a cross betwen Devo / Kraftwerk / and Primus. All vocals
are on vocoder. 10 tracks. Excellent cross section of drums, guitar and a
secret collection of synths. It appears the cover was made on an Atari 2600
graphics program.
DJ ME DJ YOU - Rainbows & Robots
Ex-Sukia members now make music as DJ ME DJ YOU. 14 tracks of Tipsy meets
Dimitri inspired weirdness. I love the quote "... I'll give them chickens
sumthin' to cackle about...". (Check out Sukia's debut album also. *SPANK
ME*)
THIEVERY CORPORATION - Sounds From The Thievery hi-fi.
Purchased at Best Buy NEW for only $9.99. Well worth the price. Runs the
gamut from hip-hop inspired beats to loungecore to ambient-dub. Lounge lovers
looking for somthing sounding "current" but with a safe-retro feel, find.
NINO NARDINI & POP RIVIERA GROUP - Self Titled
I listend to this about 10 times before I realized (or accepted) it was
recorded recently.
EXCELLENT Throwback Italio Soul Crime Jazz. From the liner notes: "... they
play heavy funk in the tradition of late sixties bands like the Mohawks,
Chakachas, Kool & The Gang, etc. Here the music is 100% nasty, featuring
copious amounts of greased out Hammond and floor pounding break beats. Put
this record on and you will have any gathering transfomed into a sure-shot
soul party..." On the rotonde musique label. #7.
STARDRIVE - Intergalactic Trot w/ Robert Mason 1973
"Using a few pre-constructed parts plus a lot of custom-designed electronic
gear and great engenuity, Robert Mason has built the worlds first
multi-voiced synthesizer which can be played like a real keyboard instrument
with full chords and tonal clusters. All the music on this album was
performed live on the Stardrive synthesizer..." Features wild versions of
Strawberry Fields & Want To Take You Higher. Hell... there's even a picture
of Mason on the back with an open can of pull-tab brew in his hand. "Whata
guy!"
DANNY GUGLIELMI w/ Vocals by DENA - Adventure In Sound
What an attractive woman on the cover. Is that Dena? Standouts to me were:
Cherokee A-E-I-O-U, Georgia On My Mind and Bullfrog... They all have this
weirdo processed echo effect with many Esquivel-like sound effects. Nice!
THE MOOG MACHINE - Switched On Rock
Well... this LP is just dandy by my estimation. The awesome MOOG (rhymes with
"vogue") synth is featured to wicked-awesome effect on the tracks: Spinning
Wheel, Jumpin Jack Flash & Yummy Yummy Yummy to such perfect effect, my ass
just won't go to sleep. Dam you Moog Machine... DAMN YOU!
last but not least...
BATMANIA - Songs Inspired by the Batman TV Series...
This CD was a nice used find. Not only does it contain the Neil Hefti theme
that I remember from the TV show it also features tracks like 1976's The
Story Of Batman & Batman & Robin as performed by Adam West himself... Also
features clunkers like The Capture by Burgess Meredith, Batman A Go-Go by
Combo Kings, Batman To The Rescue by LaVern Baker and MORE! "Pee-your
GENius... old.... chum..."
By the by... I really like Sounds Galatic LP. Great memory of when, after a
particularly heavy night of psychedelics, I woke up my friend the next
morning to this version of "Good Morning Starshine". Perfect. I just put it
on CD along with Don Sebesky's "The Distant Galaxy". More great NOW sound
covers peppered with sound interlude moog whooshes with their own titles like
"Martian Storm" and "Solar Emissions."

Bruce is probably referring to one of two multi-volume Montenegro sets on
Time, "Great Songs from Motion Pictures." I have just the first two volumes
(1927-1937 & 1938-1944) of that one. The other, similar series is "Overture
American Theater," also in four volumes. Each consist of medleys or
single-song arrangements. Using my own tastes as a guideline, I'd say that
rougly two-thirds of each are lush, easy-listeningish arrangements, and the
rest pretty neat swingin' big-band stuff. I have a particular fondness for
Billy May and Nelson Riddle vocal accompaniment arrangements, and I'd put
that latter 1/3 of those 2 Montenegro sets in that category.
The personnel listed on the albums is something of a who's who of the
classical (Aaron Rosand in the violins), big band (Doc Severinsen in the
trumpets) and space-age pop (Harry Breuer in the percussion) worlds. And
that's just picking three.
Despite the quibbling over digital remastering going on elsewhere, I'd love
to hear the master tapes (if they still exist) restored and transferred to
CD, even if only 1/3 really floats my boat.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Singer and pianist George Paoa, whose smooth voice
and mellow style
introduced generations of tourists to Hawaiian music, died Monday. He was 65.
Paoa collapsed while on a vacation cruise with his wife, and several friends and
relatives, his daughter said. The ship's medical team was unable to revive him.
For more than 40 years, Paoa entertained vacationers at isle hotels with a
repertoire of
old Hawaiian standards, light jazz and hapa-haole music, a tourist favorite
with its blend
of English lyrics and Hawaiian melodies.
Although prolific in the recording studio, he remained a fixture of the
hotel music scene
on his home island of Maui and, later, Lanai.
Paoa played with the jazz recording star Martin Denny in the 1960s and two
of his children
sang on his 1994 album, ``Walking in the Sand.''

Most sixties vocal group stuff is tame. Mostly unison, a little harmony
but very little in the way of vocal "arrangement". (Unlike the fifties
stuff like the Hi-Los)
That's not to say I don't like the tame stuff. If I like the tune, I
probably like the version. I had a Ray Bloch Singers record and it wasn't
any more "out there" than the Ray Charles Singers stuff. Or the Enoch
Light Singers. Or Percy Faith singers etc.
The only stuff like this I've heard which consistently stands out is Anita
Kerr's records.
(This is exactly the kind of thing I'm going to buy a CD burner for. So I
can get rid of them afterwards.)

But there are some incredible vocal groups with very modern vocal
arrangements. If you like Lambert, Hendricks & Ross type stuff you have got
to hear The John LeSalle Quartet LP "Potpourri". The vocal harmonies are
outstanding, and the female singer is Marlene Van Derplank, who is excellent.
You have heard her voice because in the late 60's and through the 70's she
worked singing jingles for radio and television commercials.
The early Anita Kerr Quartet records have thier moments.
Even the Four Freshmen did an LP called Modern Voices (or something to that
effect) that actually kicks. (Although in general I don't dig them or most
of the other white-bread vocal groups.)
Anyone else into LaSalle Quartet please chime in. I think Marlene was later
the lead female voice for The Swingle Singers.

with Hammond organ singin' scat bop/beatnik jazzy pop #'s like "Farmer's
Market"
and Twisted, from '53!!!
I can't fuckin' believe that Buddy Collette's Latin Jazz All Stars-"Jazz
Heat Bongo Beat"
has been reissued! This is important, dammit!
Another GREAT vocal group that I believe never made another record other
than this 1,
another RCA Spain reissue that needs to happen;
Group One: "Sings Mancini". That's NOT the title, but I don't wanna get up
and go see. Ford knows.
What izzit, Ford ? Conducted/arranged by 1 George Wilkins (?)
KILLER rekkid
THE HELLERS! Damn. Whew! Here's another outfit that did a lot of group
vocals
for jingles/commercials. Also made a VERY sophisticated LP on Command.
Probably Command's MOST sophisticated record. Shoulda been released on
Project 3,
it was/is THAT forward. It's not a konk you over the head killer type of
record.
It takes a loooooooooooooooooooong time to get it
I wouldn't doubt the "Free Design" having made commercial group vocal jingles.
They were prime for the time and had the sound down
The Kirby Stone 4, made a bunch of records, seems like for a few different
labels.
1 of those labels was Cadence.
I scored a 45 on EBAY for a buck, I think, sight unseen
Been looking for the Cadence label record, FOREVER! and NOTHING!
See this 45 on EBAY, with "The Raven" and "S'Wonderful"
I find out the track list for the LP and the "Raven" isn't on it!
YIPPPPPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I love when that shit happens. It's totally beatnik spoken word, with a
group vocal
break harmony, after each spoken word part.
Simple music line up, maybe, bass, drums, electric guitar. In and out and
then
back to the spoken word.
And you can only get it, on this 45:-))) YES!
Modernaires-Like Swung! (Mercury)
Great vocal group, also did commercial jingles, does a vocal version of
Pete Rugolo's original instrumental version of the theme to "Richard Diamond"
called "The Girl with the Long Black Hair", or something like that.
I LOVE vocal groups:)
Pagan Festival rules, too. Hard to find in Stereo, but it does exist AND
mono is great too.
Leda Annest-Portrait of Leda. Music written/arranged and composed by Phil
Moore.
Now THERE'S an amazing record
More later, I'm sure:)
Thanks!
Jack

Very sad news to report from here-
The Aku Aku in Cambridge MA is being dismantled this week. The 2 exterior
(fiberglass) tikis were chopped up yesterday; the photo in todays newspaper
was very sad, showing them being hauled away. We managed to get about a
dozen or so captains chairs out of the trash there last night, to be used
in our new nightclub. I heard today there are some carved tikis in the
trash behind the place - I'm going to check it out tomorrow. Between this
and the news about the Kahiki, we should be wearing black armbands. More
updates as they come.....

Subject: (exotica) Kahiki vs. Walgreens. HELP!
Alarming news has come our way
It seems the Kahiki was offered a proposition to sellout to Walgreen's for
expansion of their store nearby
Because the Kahiki has not made any official comment denying these rumors
which have appeared on local TV and in the local paper TWICE in one week
(thanks to one very
diligent reporter)
The Kahiki is arguably THE BEST Tiki establishment in America.
to see the Kahiki and to get all the info needed to take action now visit

I also laud the efforts of Stu Koblentz of Ohio Preservation Alliance
and Natalie Wright (Ohio Historic Properties Office) who was responsible for
getting the Kahiki on the National Register of Historic Sites

and thanks to Betty Maple & Michael Toth who provided some of the contact
info below
It is important to write a letter rather than an email so the company sees
tangible results

I don't think I need to stress the importance of everyone's support in
protecting the Kahiki
I think this will be the first opportunity for Tiki fans to really make a
difference and save a historic Tiki sight. Many have fallen since the
inception of Tiki News but none so great has been in peril since our
founding. I intend to make a stand on this issue and I hope all of you will
join in.

someone mentioned these LPs:

this is actually a UK release from 1990 put together by Bal and the guys at
Big Beat. it is still on catalog if anyone is after it. Bit too much Ray
Dennis Steckler stuff for my taste but some fun moments.

This sounds great - more info please! Is this old stuff or new?
BTW was anyone else on the list at the KPM All Stars gig at the London Jazz
Cafe last night? This was truly a seminal event featuring all the original
KPM composers (Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw et al) and a shit-hot session
band playing groovy film library/Studio 2/Sound Gallery type stuff from the
60s/70s (and the Mohawks). Apparently this was the first time such a gig
was organised. All I can say is WOW.

One-name stars that I know:
Kasandra. He's a MAN, baby! Had a minor hit in the early '70's with
"Don't Pat Me on the Back and Call Me Brother
Arrow - Soca star. "Hot, Hot, Hot" is still a good song, albeit
overplayed and overcopped.
Abdullah - Sang the song "I Coma Zimba Zio". Well, I couldn't resist it
when I saw it in the store!
Lobo - And that's all I have to say about that.
Drafi (Deutscher) occasionally backed by the Magics, was German and
heeeeere's Drafi!
http://online.prevezanos.com/schlager/d/drafi.shtml
Exuma - Bahamaian sort of folk singer (Pssst! Does anyone know how I can
get in touch with Bob Wyld?)
Jochanon - the Space Age Vocalist who sang with Sun Ra.
Morrissey
There's always Chaino...

Actually, it was "Potluck" for Capitol Records, followed by "Jumpin'
at the Left Bank" in 1959. And, yes, Marlene Verplanck is a first-
rate jazz singer--she has (I'm pretty sure) albums available on
Varese Sarabande and DRG--and her husband Billy Verplanck has
also done a lot of arranging/ composing.
