I look at the words "Digitally Remastered" on analogue recordings
with a great deal of skepticism. I was collecting Sinatra CDs at
one point, and before I got all the ones I wanted they pulled the
old ones and released "Digitally Remastered" versions. They were
the most artificial sounding CDs I ever heard. I found a couple
of vinyl copies of the same albums and compared them to the
remastered CDs and it was like night and day. The CDs sounded
like whole ranges of frequencies were chopped out of the spectrum.
The bass no longer sounded like a plucked instrument. It sounded
like a synthesizer. There was an added echo and the whole band
sounded like it was further away. Sinatra's voice was almost the
same, but the backing orchestra was a mess.
Back in the analogue days, the limitations made engineers aware
that they had to be careful and do a good job to get good sound.
Today, it seems that they assume that the machine does all of
that for them. No one listens with their ears. They listen with
vu meters and waveforms.

Is this in multiple volumes? I saw a volume 2 and 4 of something like this
yesterday in a used store.
I've also seen TIME movie theme comps with multiple arrangers. One with a
title similar to "New Movie Themes" the movies are not that new anymore,
West Side Story is on there. At least one really good spy cut that was
worth it.
So far my favorite on this label is Hugo Montenegro's "Cha-Cha for

One example of the brouhaha from Anders Wass <wass@INIT.SE>:
Let me share this Kenny memory with you.
First let me just say that I don't for a moment think=20
Kenny is a fraud. I just get this uncontrollable,=20
allergic reaction when I hear him...
Anyway, 'twas the time before christmas and I was
on holiday in South Africa. The G man had just
released his first let-me-cash-in-on-xmas album.
The first thing that met my ears when I arrived
in Cape Town was Kenny silent nighting away.
So much for exotic african sounds... Turns out
the man with the curly hair was anywhere and
after a week of trauma my girlfriend began
fearing for my mental health. Luckily, we
pushed on into the bushweld to meet the lions
in the great Kruger natinal park. Finally some
sonic relief! I thought...just when we were seated
at the colonial style dinner in a big wooden hut,
Greensleves vibratoed its way down my ear canals.
The natives were touched by the sight of a grown
man bursting into tears when he heard the joyful
messages of christmas. Well, I'm not broken that
easily. We escaped further into South Africa and
found a small B&B in the middle of nowhere. Free,
free, free at last! We were the only guests and
the couple running the place was the nicest people
you can imagine. They served a brilliant dinner
and afterwards invited us to their living room.
He was delighted when he heard I was a
saxophonist and showed his collection of
Miles, Dexter and the boys. I relaxed.
"Oh, I simply must play you this new record.
You'll love this". When he pressed play,
you all know what came streaming out...
Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated!

I've read similar complaints about digital mutilation from
collectors and audio engineers on 78-L, and I agree that
lots of the remastered reissues sound bad. But I think this
is due to choices made by the producers and engineers,
nothing inherently wrong with digital processing.
I have done quite a bit of computer-based restoration for my
own use (using Sound Forge Noise Reduction). You can make a
simple 16-bit transfer to CD-R or DAT tape that sounds
identical to any analog source (to my ears, at least). The
trouble starts with equalization, declicking, and noise
reduction. People go overboard with these tools. Some of
the sound engineers on 78-L complain that their clients want
NO NOISE, instead of reduced noise, which inevitably means
they take out some of the musical content. The most common
complaint I have is too much higher frequency reduction to
get rid of surface noise and tape hiss. I'd rather put up
with some background noise if the instruments are more
true-to-life.

i have to chime in here. the declicking and noise reduction tools on sound
forge make all my LP transfers sound like Dolby time 10. way to muted for my
taste.
the problem comes if you run the whole declicking or what ever programs for
the whole cut. on the other hand, it is too lengthy to go back and run the
program on each click individually.
i have abandoned the vinyl to LP transfer at this time, except on REALLY
EXCELLENT condition LP (few in my stacks!)
and some won't like this, but i like the expanded sound provided by the
truely digitally remastered CD. especially when they have additional tracks
they can add in.
the CD format can hold sooooooo much more information per unit time than a LP.
now don't beat me but because of the above statement. i still listen to the
majority of my records on old magnavoxes as opposed to the CD transfered
media.
click, spin, drop, clunk, let the music begin,

I agree with you, completely! The noise reduction program
"right out of the box" muffles the highs. I usually just
use the declick/decrackle module and manual editing of the
really big clicks. Declick/decrackle doesn't seem to reduce
the high frequency response. (I NEVER use the "vinyl

Don't you find that quality varies from CD to CD? Don't
some sound great, while others sound worse than the

I can't remember if this has come up on the list before, but what
about this movie "The Woman Chaser"? Apparently it's been
making the rounds of the festivals, most recently at the SXSW
Festival in Austin. According to the film's unofficial site:
"The film is based on a classic piece 1960 hard-boiled noir by a
master of the genre, Charles Willeford. It tells a story of an used
car salesman and his would-be career as a movie director, that,
like women, he chases with passion and sociopathic tendencies."
The star is Patrick Warburton (Puddy on "Seinfeld"). But what
caught my attention is the soundtrack CD. Dig this, from the film's
"official" site:
:"The Woman Chaser's groovelicious sountrack was compiled
under the supervision of Se=F1or Amor it includes the following tracks:
Bacao - Les Baxter
Car Dealer - Daniele Luppi
Ritual Drum Dance - Tito Puente
Lotus Land - Martin Denny
Taboo - Chico O'Farrill
Montage - Daniele Luppi
Voodoo Dreams - Les Baxter
Ataypura - Yma Sumac
Black Orchid - Cal Tjader
Dance Of The Headhunters - Tito Puente
Autumn In Washington Square - Dave Brubeck
Fiesta Time - Chico O'Farrill
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Jimmy Smith"
Anybody had a chance to see this film yet? I gather it's still in
festival mode and not yet in general relese(?). If this has been
mentioned before, I missed it and sorry for the repetition.

I'm down with Mark on this. I have tested just about every noise reduction
software on the market and I've found that there's nothing they can do that
you can't generally do more precisely with some judicious use of a
paragraphic equalizer and a click remover.
There are 3 types of noise that you find when restoring old (or new) vinyl.
Continuous, Harmonic and impulsive.
Harmonic is usually a hum from AC power or ground loops or putting your
tongue on your audio equipment, and it can be easily removed with
equalization.
Impulsive noises are pops, crackles, scratches, cat hairs, dog vomit, stuff
on your record. These can generally be removed easily with click removal
software. This software just looks for large spikes in the music. When set
properly (and these programs aren't hard to set) the software can tell the
difference between record noise and music, and they should not effect much
more of the music. The software works even better if run backwards on a
sound file and set properly it can easily be run on an entire album without
any adverse side effects.
Continuous noises are tape hiss or grinding surface noise and these are a
bitch to remove, because they usually effect a fairly wide band of audio
frequency. Most software made to remove this noise, even when used
moderately, will eat into the music so much that they're not worth using.
They can also leave a residual sound (Jonny Yuma aptly called digital wind)
which to me is worse then the surface noise.
Equalization, pop and crackle removal and volume control (fading in and out)
are all I use on vinyl and it generally is all that's needed, no matter how
sad assed the record is.
If anyone (and you know who you are) would like to talk more about this
e-mail me directly.

Nice, but unfortunately it doesn't look like the soundtrack is available
on CD :-(
Thanks for the note though, this movie has got to be better than
Breakfast of Champions, the last movie to use a retro-Exotica soundtrack.

Actually, it appears there IS a soundtrack CD, though very limited
release as yet. Don't know who released it or about plans for wider
distribution.

Subject: (exotica) recent additions annotated
some more "exobitionism"
this is more of the best of the stuff i've added to my collection during
the last months:
ALBUMS
* Vinnie Bell: "Good Morning Starshine"
o LP, Decca DL75138 stereo, 1960's
o appreciation: 3
o note: It starts with some cool guitar trickery on "Aquarius" (the
only sitar track), "A sinner kissed an angle" and "Good morning
starshine", but the rest is very poor "music for the masses" easy
easy, with guitar effects drowned in strings.
* Big Jim "H" And His Men Of Rythm: "Big Jim "H" Plays Smash Hits Of
Today (Hammond Organ Dance Party)"
o LP, Stero Gold Award MER 344, UK, 1971
o appreciation: 3
o note: One very good track, a funky blues called "Blues for
keyboard"; a couple of good tracks: "Power ot the people", "House
of the rising sun", "Rose garden". The rest is not bad, but
forgettable anyway.
* Cookie Carr: "Cookie Carr Plays Organ with a Solid Beat Vol. 2"
o LP, Grand Award 339 stereo
o appreciation: 3
o note: A couple of tracks are way too cheesy for me, but most of it
ranges from nice over cool to groovy.
* El Chicles: "The Best Of"
o LP, Selection Club (bootleg), Belgium?, 1998
o appreciation: 3
o note: Belgian moody EZ jazzy funk. El Chicles were the backing
group of Nico Gomez in the 1960's.
* Bobby and Betty: "Happy Monsters (Funny songs, sounds and stories about
a pleasant adventure into the impossible Land Of Ooog!)"
o LP, Happy House HH502, UK issue, 1973
o appreciation: 4
o note: "A place where only good children can visit and talk with
the happy monsters". The 5 music tracks on the B-side are the same
music as on "Bobby and Betty go to the moon", but with Goofy Spike
Jones-like rubber piggysqueeze squeeks all through.
* Hollyridge Strings: "Hit's of the 70's"
o LP, EMI/ Capitol ST-883, USA, 1970's
o appreciation: 3
o note: Arranged and conducted by Stu Phillips. Contains a very good
(IMO) version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Theme from Shaft",
with nice wordless vocals.
* Richard Marino and His Orchestra: "The Magic Beat! (The Unique Rhythms
of Richard Marino)"
o LP, Liberty Premier Series LSS-14003 die-cut cover
o appreciation: 4
o note: Sounds to me like a mix between The ("Fever and Smoke")
Three Suns and Dick Schory. Lots of fun mallet playing, some
harpsichord, wacky Space Age Pop stereo arrangements.
* Don Ralke and His Orchestra: "But You've Never Heard Gershwin
With Bongos"
o LP, Warner Bros. 1360 mono, USA, 1960
o appreciation: 4
o note: Really nice Spage Age Poppy big band beatnik jazz
versions of Gershwin tunes.
COMPILATIONS
* Discotheque Volume One
o LP, Sensateria Records SENSA LP 1 (bootleg), UK, 1999
o appreciation: 4
o note: Great stuff: 20 tracks of boogaloo, soulful "now with
lots of hand clapping, funky or bluesy Hammond groovers, and
also some "roots of acid jazz". Nice cover too, but the track
listing is totally screwed up: it doesn't match with the
contents of the disk, and 1 track from side A is duplicated
on side B, which means that one of the listed tracks is
missing, but which one? It's a puzzle.
* Drive Beat
o LP, Conroy music library BMLP 095, UK, 1972
o appreciation: 4
o note: Another untitled Conroy LP; "Drive Beat" is just the
sound description of the first 4 tracks. "Sound
Gallery/Inflight Entertainment" type of swinging Euro big
band stuff, including several really good Latin tracks.
Composed by J. Hawksworth, R. Owen and G. Somers.
* Las Vegas Grind volume 6
o LP/CD, Crypt/ Strip 78, Germany, 2000
o appreciation: 5
o note: A very strong volume! Plenty of wacky and trashy mixes
of R&B, doo-wop, beatnik, R&R, twist and funk, with lots of
sax and organ upfront, and of course - the trademark of this
series: nonsens talk, scats and crazy human zounds.
* The Wild Wild World of Mondo Movies
o LP, Big Beat/ Mondo Movies WIK 90, Germany, end 1980's?
o appreciation: 3
o note: Features music and dialogue fragments from, and cool
trailers for, trashy, "bad", American movies, like "plan 9
from outer space", and other films about madness, monsters,
murder and other mayhem.

yep, with Arthur Lyman's "With A Christmas Vibe" (Rykodisc CD). I
compared the sound of this CD with the original "Mele Kalikimaka" LP, and I
swear the LP sounds far better: most of the high frequencies were lost in
the CD remastering!

AT has a huge range and everything from a $20 moving magnet to
the higher end Signet moving coil series. I think there are two or
three at this higher end of which the OC-9 is the best value. It was
recommended to me by the guys at Wilson Audio in New Orleans
where I bought my first moving coil. I actually called them at
replacement time and asked for a recommendation since the one I
got from them was no longer made and this was the only one they
said was going to make me happy. If you've ever listened to a
moving coil you would instantly recognize the difference in detail
and sound quality. However, for heavy use, rough use or playing old
and scratched records it's hard to justify the cost. In an ideal world
I'd have had the model of SME arm on our turntable with
detachable head shell so I could swap cartridges as needed.
However many say the detachable head shell makes for worse
sound as the alignment isn't as precise. Who knows!

Yes but we can't al have th eluxury of custom proportioned rooms!
However, the placement and height of the speakers makes a huge
difference. I had a hi-fi fanatic come to see me after we moved and
while I really coudn't deal with leaving the main living room empty
for best sound, I at least listened to his advice on speaker
placement. Distance from the wall and corners is importanat and
depending on the speaker design will make a huge difference.
Never put them too close to the wall, I leave mine a good 6"-8"
away from the wall behind. Avoid close proximity to corners. If you
have bass reflex design speakers (they typically have a round
opening "port" usually in the back) the bassiness is
understandable. This type of speaker is more "efficient" in that it
needs less power to drive it but the sound is always too bassy.
Japanese and many lower end speakers typically use this design
but most British ones I've seen typically do not. If you want more
specific details let me know offlist.

early exotica thing? any good?
