I'm trying to struggle with the difficult music category I still seem to
call "electronica".
I say this as I keep hearing more and more stuff that I can't quite place...
A case in point is this new "Covert Operations" compilation on ESL. It's
funny as another ESL comp (Jet Society) first got me on to the whole
breakbeat rush (I can see Nat cringing here by this point...). But my first
interest has always been electronic music so it's a style I at least thought
I knew well. Problem is I know what it is I like but I just can't figure
what to call it or how to describe it anymore. Take just about anything on
the Covert Operations CD. Lots of Eastern/Indian/Dub references, smooth
sound, and some samples I know but can't place! It features Ursula 1000 and
lots of exotica sounding titles to boot. I don't know how this CD would be
categorized in a store but if I did it may help. What I'm referring to here
is the stuff you routineliy find mixed into Acid Jazz/electronica sections
of most better stores and yet somehow never seems to find its way into the
dance music stores ( I always asked myself - is this a bad thing?). I'm
talking of artists from what I call the the A-Musik crowd and related
labels: Pol, Schlammpfeitziger, L@N, Markus Schmickler, Howie B, Seefeel,
Kreidler, FX Randomiz, Console, to name just a few. So am I on to yet
another new thing (most of this isn't all that new actually) or do I just
need a little help with the categories? So much overlap and so much
crossover these days. It's exciting but a even for a long time music addict
a bit confusing! Any other opinions on "Covert Operations"? Certainly worth
a good listen IMHO and definitely a label I have to investigate further! Why
do I think I'm likely to be headed to the dance music stores though...

While I was visitng Portland last weekend I picked up a brill cd called 'Bombay the Hard Way, Guns, Cars & Sitars.' It was one of those cds that you take one look at the cover and know it'll be well worth the money...and this doesn't have a bad track on it. It's like Ravi Shankar sits in with Isaac Hayes (or vice versa).
