<< I would recommend Denny's brand of exotica over Baxter's to anyone new to
this music, because I think it is much more fun to listen to. Baxters best
exotic music is far more sophisticated and challenging. As far as an
overall
comparison, it's a slam dunk for Baxter. Just look at his recordings, from
Music From the Moon and The Passions to the Dunwich Horror and Helles
Belles. >>
But "How To Stuff A Wild Bikini" and some of his other soundtracks are pretty
poor. If you are going to compare Denny vs. Baxter you have to do so on
shared terms. Undeniably Baxter wins with respect to composing.
However when it comes to arranging the job is a lot more difficult to
compare. Remember, not counting "Hypnotique," Denny arranged for a small 5
piece group which is quite different from Baxter's arrangements for an
orchestra. I would have to say they share equally a sense of sophistication
and challange. You surely must realize that while Baxter wrote "Quiet
Village" it is Denny's recording which is the most recogniozed version. For
this particular composition, in the arrangement department as Denny was able
to create far more atmosphere among a five man group than Baxter did with an
orchestra -- now that is something. Comparuing Baxter to Denny in this
respect is like apples and oranges....or should that be papayas and passion
fruits?

"Forbidden Island" is the only Denny album to have a truly alternate cover.
As Denny mentioned in the liner notes to the Scamp CD some a&r or project
manager was just trying to give the orignal cover a more up-to-date look as
the original does look stylistically as one the most older looking of the lot.

I don't think I would consider the presence of bird calls as the benchmark
of good exotica (Baxter, Drasnin, etc.).
Wouldn't it even be too Lyman's credit that he didn't utilize Denny's
trademark bird sounds? (Though, as Kevin points out, he often did.)

Jack, don't confuse "spirited" corrections with personal attacks. I
agree that major flames should be done offline, but (for example) when
**somebody** (e.g. you) makes LOUD PROCLOMATIONS then you've got to
expect a bit of "juice" when someone feels they must post to the list in
order to correct a false assertion. (e.g. my correction that Lyman did
indeed use birdcalls).
I should have done more winking.

Excellent. Good, sincere screed is hard to come by.
It's been a while.
I've always thought that many of the people on this

excited about music in general.
I live in the heart of "silicon valley" and engineers

Disney Animator Ken Peterson Dead at 91:
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) -- Ken Peterson, who worked as a artist on Walt Disney's
''Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,'' died March 29 of cancer. He was 91.
After a brief attempt at making his own animated motion pictures,
Peterson joined the army of young artists Disney hired in 1936 for
''Snow White,'' the first feature-length animated film.
Peterson headed the art department for many animated films, including
''Alice in Wonderland,'' ''Lady and the Tramp'' and ''Sleeping Beauty.''
- ---
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Actor Arnold H. Johnson, who starred in the 1969 film
''Putney Swope'' and was a regular on the television series ''Sanford and
Son,'' died Monday. He was 78.
He also appeared in several other television shows, including ''Good Times,''
''The Jeffersons,'' ''Highway to Heaven'' and ''Matlock.''
He was cast as Swope in the Robert Downey-directed comedy ''Putney Swope,''
about blacks taking over a Madison Avenue advertising agency.
Soon after, Norman Lear brought Johnson to Los Angeles for a running role as
George Hutton in the ''Sanford and Son'' sitcom, which ran from 1972 to 1977.
He also played a patient in ''A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich,'' a bum in
''Honky Tonk Freeway,'' a tattoo artist in ''Racing With the Moon,'' an inmate
in ''Weeds,'' a butler in ''Sunset,'' a janitor in ''The Seventh Sign'' and
Grandpapa in ''Menace II Society.''

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - James Charles ``Bud'' Wingard, long-time head writer for
the television country variety show ``Hee Haw,'' died Wednesday. He was 67.
Wingard was a cosmetics executive in California in the late 1960s when he
decided to move to Nashville to be a singer. His career stalled, so he went to
Archie Campbell, who later became a ``Hee Haw'' regular, for advice. Campbell
asked Wingard if he could write jokes and Wingard fibbed and said yes.
Wingard went on to lead a team of writers who turned out 2,000 jokes a year for
the likes of Grandpa Jones, Junior Samples, Campbell and Roy Clark.

very good. i like it, but the title song is by far and large the greatest
track here, IMO. for me, it's not worth anything more than a reissue price
tag.
BTW, is a "song" with spoken words a song?

A better choice of Shirley MacLaine fare: the Sweet Charity OST/ Hey Big
Spender and a frug number, featuring Sammy Davis Jr. at his get funky now!
best. Downside: a nearly toxic march. And some boring patches.
An even better choice would be the OST for Nights of Cabiria, on which Irma
was based.
But...Cabiria is unavailable. Even from CAM, the wellspring of Fellini/Rota
OSTs. Years of fruitless questing have turned up nothing.

Subject: (exotica) "The Later Lounge: Vol. 1"
At my local Borders this morning, I spotted the May 2000 issue of a British
men's magazine entitled "Later," sporting one of those free cover-mounted
CDs: "The Later Lounge: Vol 1 -- Twenty kitsch classics from the sixities and
seventies."
Of course, I snapped it up. The design of the disc is cool and it's filled
with some great stuff, including tracks from several of the Blue Note
compilations ("Blue Bacharach," "Blue Movies," "Blue Breakbeats"), Shirley
Bassey's "Light My Fire," Lord Sitar's "I Can See for Miles" and James
Clarke's "Blow Up a Go-Go" (aka "Wild Elephants," from the Gap commercial).
True, I have some of the tracks on other compilations, but it was too nifty
to pass up. A steal at $6.95

That whole thing on the American Pie site about the

And, directly from the boot, I would say that - unfortunately - discs
here aren't cheaper than in the States. I've even found out that it's
cheaper for me to buy them Italian movie music comps at
www.dustygroove.com, rather than getting them in the shops round the
block, which makes it quite unrealistic when you think that, say,
Irma has their headquarters just a fifteen minute walk from my home.
So it's not a matter of finding something cheaper, only to get
something you won't get in the States. Having said that, there's not
much to get here that you won't be able to get yourself in USA: all
Italian "lounge" (or call it whatever) labels are well distributed
abroad, and I would say that they even are better distributed abroad
than in the inside market. "Lounge" is not that big in Italy, and
those Italian products surely sell far better abroad than on the
domestic market. The fact that there are always been very few Italian
listmembers just prove that.
So, what could Domenico ask his papa' (Giovanni, isn't he?) to bring
him home? Nothing he couldn't find cheaper and more steadily at
Dusty Groove, I'd say. And I would be surprised if he'd even find the
most popular issues, like Easy Tempos, in an average record shop,
because these items are only stocked by "rock" oriented shops, which
are a minority. That's for the cd reissues. As far as original vinyl
is concerned, there just no hope to find it, at least you'd want to
spend big bucks at a record fair (a place where your pa is not
planning to go, I guess...). Thrift stores and garage sales still
have to be invented around here, and it takes a heavy dose of luck to
find some interesting items in a little village saturday morning flea
market.
The 2 records Cheryl mentioned were issued by a very little
indie label called "Giallo Records", which isn't distributed outside
Italy and has very scarce distribution even in Italy. I posted about
these when they came out, just as I do every time that gets released
an Italian disc that I think would not be easy to find abroad. These
two are actually the only Italian releases that didn't make it on the
dustygroove catalogue. Everything else that came out on Right Tempo,
Irma, Plastic, Aperitivo, Studio Uno, Dagored, Cinevox, Schema, etc.,
I see it's easily available in the States.
Trying to help, I "introduced" (no hand-shakin', just e-mail
crossin') Jack Diamond to Giallo Records, in order to find those
discs distribution in the USA; the man from Giallo did send, but I
think Giacomo Diamante (glad to read you back, btw) let them down.
If you'd want them, you better directly check Giallo Records at:
giallorecords@excite.com
(hope it's still there; if it's not, drop me a line, and I'll
enquire).
At the moment there's another new Italian label that specializes in
"Lounge", and that has yet to appear on Dusty Groove: it's Black Cat
Records, run by the guy who edits "Il Giaguaro" magazine. By now, it
has put out:
1. "Italian Lounge Beat Party" (BCR 0100) - unreleased
tracks from the italian film music party, featuring Armando
Trovajoli, Alessandro Alessandroni, Piero Piccioni, Nico Fidenco,
Stefano Torossi, Luis Bacalov, and an interactive rom-track
with an interview (in english) with A. Alessandroni;
2. The Psych-Jazzy-Beat of i Marc 4 (BCR 1001) - plus an
interactive rom-track with an interview (in english) with
Maurizio Majorana of Marc 4;
- -- coming soon on cd/dlp:
- - "Fumo di Londra", OST by Piero Piccioni;
- - "Italian Library Music Party, vol. 1";
- - "Italian Lounge Beat Party, vol. 2".
You may want to directly check the ed at:

That cut is also on Lord Sitar's self-titled album (originally released
in 1968, and reissued on CD last year) which can be found very
reasonably (try Dusty Groove or CDNow) It's one of the weaker tracks on
the CD, imho - so I wouldn't buy the compilation just for that piece.
But that's me... But I would recommend the CD for his versions of
"Black Is Black" and "I Can See For Miles".

Subject: (exotica) [obit] Alan Betrock
April 15, 2000
Alan Betrock, 49, Pop Critic and Record
Producer
By ANN POWERS,NYTimes
Alan Betrock, whose love of rock 'n' roll propelled a pioneering
career as a critic, editor, publisher, archivist and record producer,
died on Sunday at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. He was 49 and lived in
Brooklyn.
The cause was cancer, said Marilyn Laverty, his former wife.
Mr. Betrock's interest in the outer limits of popular culture began when
he was a child in Queens. "I'd hear a record on radio and try to seek it
out, but it was very hard to find if it wasn't in the top 30," he said in a
1972 interview in The New York Times. By that time, he was a Queens
College graduate publishing JAMZ, an early fanzine.
JAMZ led to Rock Marketplace, which united collectors nationwide in
the search for obscure recordings. Mr. Betrock broadened his editorial
vision in 1976, when he founded New York Rocker, one of the primary
organs of the burgeoning American punk scene.
Mr. Betrock understood the connections between this new movement
and the sounds he loved from the 1960's. He championed artists who
were refreshing rock's traditions, including Blondie, Richard Hell and the
Voidoids and Television. He produced Blondie's first recordings,
including a crystalline version of the Ellie Greenwich girl-group classic
"Out in the Street."
His 1982 book, "Girl Groups: The Story of a Sound," was lauded by the
critic Robert Palmer in The Times as "everything a rock 'n' roll genre
study should be." By the time he published it, Mr. Betrock had sold New
York Rocker and was pursuing a dual career as a journalist and an
independent record mogul. Releases on his label, Shake Records,
introduced artists like the dB's, the Smithereens and Marshall Crenshaw.
In his writing he ardently defended American punk, exposing its roots in
garage rock and vintage teenage pop.
In later years Mr. Betrock expanded his explorations by founding Shake
Books, which published more than a dozen works on subjects spiritually
tied to rock, like teenage exploitation films and the history of the pinup.
He is survived by a brother, Wayne, of Manhattan, and his mother,
Gertrude Betrock of Tamarac, Fla.
