Hee! Well, I couldn't let this pass without comment. For whatever reason,
the single, on a pink Tipton label, is the version of the Batman theme that
I grew up on. My brother always thought that the cool side was the flip,
"Robin's Theme" (Lyrics: "It's Robin, hey, it's Robin/Ho-ohhhh,
Robinnnnnnnn"). The A side is indeed a great version, starting with a Sun
Ra-esque (that's a word, dogbite it!), lean on the keyboard and then it's
off to the races. Oddly enough, the Mar-Ketts version uses the exact same
arrangement. Which came first?

Life was surely simpler before sampling and computers! I sometimes think
that range of styles of electronic and pop music are expanding as those of
rock styles are shrinking. For me it was the new wave era that changed
everything. New music replaced rock as the main term in my musical
vocabulary.
> Go into any store that specializes in electronic or dance music

That's what I've noticed, though these categorizations usually are limited
to dance music. I used to apply the Acid Jazz term to cover a wide range,
from Amon Tobin to Stock Hausen & Walkman but left the A-Musik type music to
electronica. This mimmicks the way my favorite stores seem to deal with this
issue. However, the distinction is rapidly becoming blurred. Not that it's a
bad thing, just makes it hard to find things in stores when you don't know
where to look!! Dance music stores tend to be easy because typically its
all about what's the newest or the latest. Few stores sort by label for
obvious reasons but when looking at searchable databases this method is
actually quite effective, with labels like Crippled Dick, ESL, etc as good
examples.

Never come across a "loungey beats" section in a dance store but then again
I've never seen Ursula 1000 in one either... "Downtempo" may be a good one
if it decribes the smooth (vs the punding beat heavy) style of music, such
as that on Covert Operations.

Couldn't agree more! This is a really good label. I know all to well the
thumping rave crap you speak of and have felt much the same way about it for
many years now. Do check out any of those names I mentioned. Much of it is
more sparse but I'm sure you're going to like a lot of it. Best source for
this A-Musik label is Forced Exposure - and they offer good and accurate
descriptions of everything. Of course Dusty Grooves with their new UHF
Records partnership may just combine the best of both worlds for me!

Hey Mo, that's sad news. I have respect for you decision, but I don't
understand your motivation. What do you mean by 'the list has lost its

Anyway, I'm glad I got to know you through this list and I hope we'll hear

You might have an easier time finding it by looking for the "limited edition"

I always thought of this record as a spoof of "serious" exotica records.
Rather than the usual bird calls, there are other animal sounds, lots of
them. Funny ones, like a Donald Duck type, monkeys, etc. But this LP is no
joke, as it is very well done.

Canadians, is TCM offered on your cable services? Or does it not offer
sufficient Canadian content?
Just have to rave about the silent movies shown at midnight ET Sunday
nights on TCM. The music connection is the scores for these films. Y'all
can imagine the importance of scores for silents. Most I've seen on TCM
have newly commissioned music, often in the style of the period when the
films were made. Pretty interesting stuff, albeit tame for this group.
=46or the list, the most compelling OST was the score for an Oscar Micheaux
film, which aired on TCM in February. TCM teamed up with one of the New
York museums of art of restore the film...and they hired Roy Brooks to
write an all-percussion score. You can find out more about Micheaux, his
work, and early "race films" at

of the Brooks-scored film, though.

I will however enjoy recieving mailing form this list even though I believe
you are very clique ridden, and perhaps a bit egotistical in who you
welcome, and who you do not welcome.
PS
Mimi I suspect that I am that "Jerk" Andrew who you so decently referred to
in your recent BJ related mailing, I have been a lurker for the past few
months and have been constantly surprised at the level of nastiness which
pervades this once decent environment. I claim to be neither of great
intellect or massive understanding of shriners, or personal music opinions,
but I do realise that it is human to err.

If you examine any of my Western Swing related posts, circa July 1999 you
will se that i neither insult anyone personally, or become overly hostile to
other opinions, and rapidly retract when I realise that my postings are
unwelcome.

I bet I have a better record collection than anyone on this list

i just got a copy last year and feel whole again!
does any one know who exactly is on this record???

the reverb/echo or atomsphere of this record is too cool.

While on the subject of the ESL label, I feel compelled to bring up the
like-minded Quango label, which has really been overlooked (and probably
unfairly pegged as a "world music" label). They haven't released anything in
a few years, but according to their website, they're set for a "rebirth."
Anyway, Quango released several fantastic downtempo electronic compilations
that I would highly recommend. Coming in the mid-'90s, these were arguably
ahead of their time, which is why the label has been inactive lately. Among
the acts featured are Thievery Corporation, Kruder + Dorfmeister, Strange
Cargo (William Orbit), Fila Brazillia, David Holmes, Jazzanova and others.
There are two good "Abstract Vibes" comps, as well as "Dimensions in
Ambience." There are four volumes of "A Journey into Ambient Groove," all of
which are good. But the one to look out for in particular is "Pop Fiction:
New Crime Jazz," which is heavily noir-influenced and one of my favorite
collections.
I hope this label starts up again, because for a short period there, most
everything they released was pretty solid.

Sun Ra and mebers of his Arkestra play the music on this LP. It was a quick
session they did for some easy, fast cash. A lot of the melodies/themes used
on this LP were taken from some fairly well known classical compositions
(which is in fact very common on Batman and other cash in LPs). I think that
some famous surf/session guitarists also sat in on this recording of this LP.
I've forgotten who it was though.

A film I have never been able to watch all the way through because Peter
Sellers is so
ab-so-lute-ly brilliant at being a total fucking idiot, it just makes me
SOOOOOOOOOO uncomfortable, I just can't handle it
Maybe some day I'll be able to watch it all the way through
The soundtrack however, is a completely different story, with
Sitars-A-Groovin', Now Go Go Sounds, Loungey Jazz and just general great
fun sounds, that ONLY Mancini can create.

Medley: Kojak and S.W.A.T, Baretta's Theme, The Rockford Files, Hawaii 5-0,

Compleat with synthesizers, Fender Bass, big booming and spot on
percussion, the "genius of them all", Henry Mancini steps up to bat and
gives us all his best "Now Go Go Sound recording and does it as only the
guy with some of the best taste in popular music ever,
can do.
He really pulls it off, so if you do like that "Now Go Go Sound" and you do
like TV Sounds, this it is. Killer guitars and organs and that driving
seriously funky sound and a sound of tunes that are very familiar and just
may be the "soundtrack to your childhood or life", you'd looooooooooove
this release. Great cartooney cover too, that says it all.
Released 1976

Great booklet with pictures and liner notes outlining who arranged what and who
played in what combo/orchestra
http://www.jackdiamond.com/jazz_sounds.JPG
3 different records, all music composed by Henry Mancini, arranged by
3 great arrangers , from the very same time period.
1959 and 1961
Bob Florence, Pete Candoli and Maxwell Davis.
Serious beatnik "private eye/crime" jazz with bongos a-plenty,
performed by all the same players who originally played on
and in the Mancini Orchestra, from the same period.
Understand ? It kills, no pun intended
Lots of great guitars, horns, that never ending classic "Walkin' Bass" and
many time "Running Bass" sound, arrangements et al

Quoting from John F. Zwed's Sun Ra biography, "Space Is The Place" (highly
recommended):
"Ed Bland continued to hire the Arkestra's people whenever he could. He
called them for a limbo record he was doing for Audiofidelity, used them
for some singles for Epic Records with soul singer Popcorn Whylie, and on
blues guitarist Phil Upchurch's 'Feeling Blue'. Their flexibility allowed
him to use them on projects where other musicians might fumble, like the
non-Union session he hired them for in Newark in January 1966, to record a
children's record of 'Batman and Robin' for Tifton Record Company. Under
the name of The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale, and with Tom Wilson as
producer, they pieced together a band of Sun Ra on organ, Jimmy Owens on
trumpet, Tom McIntosh on trombone, Al Kooper (on organ when Sun Ra wasn't
playing), Danny Kalb on guitar, and the rest of the members of the early
rock band The Blues Project. Though the 'Batman' theme does appear on the
record, most of the rest of it was made up of rearrangements of music in
the public domain (such as a theme by Tchaikovsky), all played in
rhythm-and-blues style with prominent twangy guitars."
>are DAN AND DALE for real?
Speaking for myself, I think there were earlier 'Sensational Guitars of Dan
& Dale' records (cut by other people). I've seen at least one pictured on a
dust liner. My suspicion is that there was no Dan & Dale... it was just a
concept created to get some of the Santo & Johnny market. But I could well
be wrong. Anyone? Thanks.

There sure were! I have one of these...things on Diplomat Records and they
picture about four more. This just can't be Sun Ra/Blues Project on these
issues. It was my great puzzlement as a boy as to why it was called "The
Sensational Guitars...", when I couldn't hear much of any kind of guitar on
my brother's monophonic Eletrophonic. "Robin's Theme" had the wild guitar
lead.
Curious about hearing the Bat Boys (thanks Mr. Diamond!), but having heard
the Neal Hefti soundtrack reissued, I was underwhelmed. Not bad, but not
particularly wacky. I like Neal Hefti, but this one didn't do it for
me. All the props in the world to Billy May for the incomparable lyrics to
the Batman Theme (for which he is credited on the TV show).
Holy Graduation (!),

Phil Upchurch, whom I'm sure played "blues guitar" many times, on many
records was not a
"blues guitarist" per se'
He was a studio player
He's the gittar player on all those wonderful "Soulful Strings" rekkids and
if I'm not mistaken, the sitar player is not credited, mebbie it's him.
I dunno. Maybe
Find his records, solo wise on Cadet or Blue Thumb and prepare yourself for
some ___serious___ funk/jazz/soul guitar and at times HEAVY FUNK, like as
in psychedelic funk
and many times with horn sections blasting away
He's a killer, yes he is

That was always one of my favorites as it was my first Batman LP. Some of
the playing is a little sloppy at times but still a must for any Batman
rip-off LP collector. The theme is really cool on here. Also, like the Sun
Ra one many of the melodies/themes are ripped off from famous classical music
pieces.

There are tons of records by "The Sensational Guitars Of Dan & Dale." Some
are pretty cool small combo sessions, covering 1960's hits. Others have lame
strings arrangements with uninteresting guitar melody playing on top. My
guess is that many of these were rereleases of other records originally
released under someone else's name. I have a few and none of them give
arranger or player credits. If you see 'em at the thrift for 50 cents why
not pick it up. Otherwise let 'em stay on the store shelf.

The Nelson Riddle original Batman TV soundtrack is MUCH better. It has a lot
of dialogue from the show, often over the music. Many will be glad for the
dialogue, but I wish it weren't over some of the best musical moments on the
LP.
BTW, this is on cd. (Don't know if it is still in print or not). You may
see sealed copies of this on eBay for a lot of money. Don't do it! I was in
a record store in Dallas a year ago and they had about 30 still sealed copies
of this album, so either it was reissued at some point, or a warehouse full
of them was discovered some where.
Best,
Larry

Well... you asked for it... Keep in mind the following disclaimer: We've
had a database of our records for some years for a number of reasons, from
trading to just knowing what we have, etc. It's hopelessly out of date and
the reason for wanting to revive it was to help us in planning radio shows
and NOT due to any obssesion for coding and classifying. What is worse is we
seem to have an attraction to music that is innately unclassifiable, thus
only serving to make this process all the more painful!
Acid Jazz - Started to include things I was finding in these sections. Most
of the Ninja crowd, Portishead, etc. After The Bobby Hughes Experience I
figured this category was history for me.
Ambient - Use of both electronic and acoustic sounds but more atmospheric
like Gavin Bryars, Harold Budd, Duriutti Column, etc. Strictly speaking
later Eno fits the bill too.
Cut-Ups - Collage artists like Negativeland, People Like Us and to some
degree Stock, Hausen & Walkman.
Drone - Misleading category as most early Philip Glass fits the bill. Still
not a style I know all that well but it's very defined. Allan C. could
surely expand on this.
Electro-Acoustic - Mix of electronic and acoustic instruments. Lots of the
Made to Measure groups, Holger Czukay and even Can could sometimes fit this
category. Lots of overlap to be sure.
Electronic - the purer often more sparse stuff. Say Conrad Schnitzler, etc.
Electronica - The smoother flowing and structured electronics such as say
Howie B, Kreidler, Console & the A-Musik crowd. Its a more recent term for
electronic if you ask me but the one that I see in stores most often.
Experimental - Experiments or manipulations. Could include more
experimental recording by other artists. A fall back if nothing else works
for the otherwise unclassifiable. We have lots in this category!
Industrial - The original late 70's crowd including Cabaret Voltaire, TG,
etc.
Krautrock - The catch-all description for many of my personal favourites,
many associated with the producer Conny Plank. Still very age dated as even
though their sound is influenced by the likes of Neu! it's a stretch to call
Stereolab Krautrock.
Minimalist - The Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass crowd. It's just
that all contemporary clasical music isn't minimalist so New Music seems to
be a better catch all description. 20th century is another attempt that
covers this music and then some.
Moog - This seems to conveniently cover all the electronic oldies except
that they all didn't use a Moog so...
Musique actuelle - The style of music seemingly invented in Quebec. Robert
M Lepage, Rene Lussier and gang. Very Zorn like in general. Closer to jazz
New Music - Covers just about anything. I started using this one once the
New Wave seemed over but its almost too broad to be of any meaning anymore.
New Wave - Most of the the electro-pop recordings fit in here but this
category has too much of a date association to it to work well.
Noise - Hmm, well Whitehouse, Merzbow or Chop Shop come to mind. Not at all
the Alan Vega "Wall of Sound" either. Certainly not for the faint of heart!
Space Music - The softer dronier yet musical stuff like say Klaus Schulze.
Another dated category which seems to fit the 70's well but not much more.
Techno - In my case this is the high BPM stuff that would give me a headache
if listened to for any extended period. Putting something into this
category usually meant "to be sold off".
Not to start another round but closer to home, try dealing with the easy -
exotica - instrumental records for classifications. I have to admit this one
is easier though the J word sprouts up a lot. Incredibly Strange Music
worked at first but...Since its mostly all natural instruments the task
would seemingly be easier as Citizen kafka notes. I just think I'm no longer
up to it... Must be getting too old... And to think we started this only to
attempt to make things easier for ourselves!!!

There seems to be two kinds of stores... Those with Electronica/Acid Jazz
sections and those with umpteen variations of electronica, none of which
seems to ever be the stuff I like. Sure these stores have a breakbeat
section but it never seems to house any of the stuff Br.Cleve put us on to
for example. Downbeat sounds just fine to me too in this context!
> BTW, I found that Jacknife Lee CD used so I don't know what rack it would

Hey you're not THAT much older than me! I think you're finding what I did
with this stuff, that being a lot of it is a bit too Hip Hop and heavy
sounding. I like the 60's-70's sampled pieces but a significant percentage
of most of these releases seems to sound lilk hiphop to me. But the good
tracks are really good. And.. those added years help identify samples!
> Jacknife Lee kind of reminds me of sped up Human League. Or Kraftwerk.
Considering that's probably a potential source for samples I wouldn't be
surprised. And since both of those groups are old favourites I'm not
surprised I like it.
We played a piece on the show today by Skeewiff that included samples from
Shaft, the Twilight Zone and someone shouting what sounded like Seig Heil!
Yes, another Br. Cleve recommendation, from It's Finger Lickin' Thang
(Finger Lickin) UK. Gotta admit all this new stuff somehow makes me think
back to the days of hanging around the record store waiting for the latest
new wave releases to come in (there's my date stamp) so I ain't complaining!
