ADJ Foot/Food (?) featuring the great Ken Nordine. anyone knows more about

The track may be called "The Aging Young Rebel" and according to CDNow
(http://cdnow.com) there is an album called "Dubplate of Food, Vol. 2",
although that may be a single, too.
A sample (Hee!) of "The Aging Young Rebel" can be heard here:

Here is a simple key:
DJ Food, but "My Pal FOOT FOOT" :^)

DJ Food were Coldcut, then Coldcut and two others. Now it is just the
two others. Their latest album has this Ken Nordine collaboration track.
http://www.ninjatune.net/ninja/artists/djfood/ should explain things
after a little exploration.

Brian asked about the Spaceheads:
Just to add to what others have posted, they sound a bit like Ben Neill and
his "mutant trumpet" but less drum & bass and more experimental. Although
when I saw them at Victoriaville last year they seemed like a dance band
compared to the other acts that were there!
Johan heard a new track by DJ Food:
This is from the new album "Kaleidoscope" on Ninja Tune. The Ken Nordine
track ("The Ageing Young Rebel") is also available on an ep entitled "A Dub
Plate of Food vol. 2". It's a great album combining elements of jazz with
low-key hip hop beats and hints of dub. Someone recently mentioned
Cinematic Orchestra; this is along the same lines.

well, i've already received the answer in my mail box, in the
latest "Other Music" update:
DJ FOOD "Kaleidoscope" (Ninjatune, Canada) CD $13.99
RealAudio: http://userweb.interactive.net/~tomc/djfood.ram
It's five years later and Coldcut's gone, but there's still plenty of fresh
Food left. PC and Strictly Kev have persevered to offer us an aptly-named
collection, in which their trippy beats refract chopped up orchestral
soundscapes, loungecore, kung-fu fighting, pool balls sinking in their
pockets, a Ken Nordine poem, samples galore, and more. Call it Snip-Hop.
The sound's a bit familiar: they're definitely walking a trail they already
blazed. But they do it with style and wit, making each of these 12 tracks
an adventure every time it visits your earhole. What they had wasn't
broken, so they didn't fix it. You've heard those mixologists who stole it
all from these guys, so now hear the originals, masters at play. [AL]

Its DJ Food, a "Snip-Hop" artist(S?). It's Hip-Hop sampled and culled
together cut and paste style. I ordered one from Other Music yesterday. If
you want, I'll ram my opinion of it onto the digest (I also ordered "Los
Samplers Descargas", sort of on the same tip but with older Latin samples,
not hip-hop, hopefully Tico quality) JB

Subject: (exotica) To the Exoticans
Dear Exoticans,
Some of you have no doubt noticed that I haven't posted to this list in
almost a week. Before you consider celebrating that fact, I've several
things that need to be said.
First, to those on the list with whom I have remained on friendly terms
via email, this post is most definitely *not* meant for you. I
appreciate your friendship, your kindness, and your generosity in the
support of my music websites and in being willing to share information
with me in general. I thank you very much. This is what it's all about.
If only everyone felt this way.
I was recommended to join this list shortly after I had put up my Walter
Wanderley site and I was assured that I'd not only find kindred spirits
here, but that I'd find a lot of support from people who liked his music
as well. In my own experience so far, that has most definitely not been
the case, and the person who recommended this list to me for such a
reason did so in error.
I have really come to disdain the term "Exotica" or any such term like
"weird", "strange", "wacky", "lounge", et al. to describe what is in
essence to me to be simply _good music_ - regardless of the popularity of
such music with the general public.
It is for that reason, and because there are those on this list who have
been (for lack of a more accurate description) _totally obnoxious_ in
their replies to various messages I have posted (irregardless of subject)
that has made me reconsider whether I want to continue on this list any
longer. I have chosen not to continue on the list.

Well.... as someone who you are possibly talking about, I want to
express, that I feel that it's a pity that it should end this way. I'm
sure there were some misinterpretations on all sides. The fact alone
that we had controverse discussions should not make one take such a
decision. After all I believe a list like this lives on the exchange of
sometimes diametral opposite opinions, to a certain degree even of
biting sarcasm, always carried however by a big portion of passion. If
we'd all always agree on everything, *I* would long have left this list.
It's a basic sign of a different opinion that you don't share it. It can
drive you mad sometimes. Insulting others isn't justified though, and I
must say, that I didn't like some of the reactions on your posts,
despite the fact that I didn't agree with your positions. Looks like I
didn't quite read between your lines what others read. All I can say is
that any other list or chat I was ever in, had a lower culture of
discurse than the Exotica list has.

That is indeed "what it is all about". It would appear that not agreeing
with your particular point of view would equate with not being friendly,
kind or generous. I believe you are wrong here, in fact I'm sure many on
this list would find this personally insulting! Rest assured on one point
though; The sharing of information IS the reason for the existence of this
list!

We may not all be devotees of the man but I'm certain most everyone likes
his music. I actually discovered him through this list and have since
acquired
several of his records myself. I have not heard any such negative comments
towards WW himself?

Who says weird wacky or strange are not, or cannot, be "good"! In most
parts it's called a sense of humour! Laugh a little .. it'll surely do you
good!

That is is your choice as well as your interpretation. It would appear you
equate any opinion which disagrees with your own point of view as obnoxious,
etc. Not to make a philosophical discussion out of this but I think you're
simply feeling sorry for yourself. Remember this is also discusssion list!

That is entirely your choice to make. If this helps you justify your
decision, so be it. I do not wish to debate the matter any further but I
simply think this probably isn't the group of people for you. Remember the
list is really nothing more than the sum of its members... and you must
take
the whole thing or nothing. Unfortunately, you have chosen nothing. And that
is your loss...

Subject: (exotica) claudine longet
Hello Hello,
Does anyone have the parody of Claudine Longet that aired on Saturday Night
Live in the 70's on video tape? If so, can anyone encode the audio of the
skit into an mp3 for me?
Reason I ask is that I am in the process of building an immense Claudine
Longet RealAudio Gallery online. All clips will be encoded in stereo
(except for mono originals) and there will be choices to stream individual
files or play the "longet" radio! I have set aside 40MG online for this on
my server. There will not be any mp3 files on the site though due to
copyright issues (plus the space would kill.)
This is also going to be an offshoot part of the Cuddle up with Claudine
website at,
http://users.deltanet.com/~gondola/longet/
Also, if anyone can help with encoding vocal bites into mp3 form from
various television appearances that would be excellent and of course you
would be listed on the site as a main contributor. If the vocal snippets
are small enough, wav or aiff files are fine.
I only ask for mp3 form because I can rip the good quality file and then
encode various realaudio versions at different bitrates.
If you can help as a contributor, email me off list at,
mofo2148@speakeasy.org
Thanks in advance!

I have to plead ignorance to some of the events that lead up to the virtual
equivalent of the tar-and-feathering of BJ, but I have to say the tone and
tenor of the discussion became far too mean for my liking. BJ was one of the
few people whose posts I avoided unless I was really interested in the
subject-matter, so I may have missed some great, unforgiveable offense. But
I would hope in the future we could handle such matters with more aplomb.
This list is easily the most kind, least flame-prone group I have
participated in, and I am quite proud of the way we all conduct ourselves
most of the time, even when differences and controversy arise. On the net
it's easy to forget that there are people on the other ends of the wire.
(Sometimes silly, judgemental, obnoxious people - but people nonetheless.)
I do not know exactly why things happened differently this time. I'm sure
there are those who will be burning to educate me, and again, I admit that I
have not looked back to see what the hubbub was REALLY all about and why
everything came to such a foam. I read some of the posts, and she did come
off as rigid and closed minded at times, but I saw nothing to deserve the
confrontation she recieved.
I don't mean to preach, and I do not wish to point fingers - I hope these
comments are not taken as such. It's an encouragement to do better next
time, perhaps.
Mostly I am speaking up because it's been bothering me today, and I needed
to purge.
Thanks for the space.

You tighten your laws so tight that your little cojones get jammed right up

Love it!

I too think its a shame that BJ is no longer with us. Even though she's a
fiery little bitch (and that should be taken as a compliment) and seemed
very tetchy and continually on the verge of a major rant, veering between
unchecked aggression and major paranoia, I liked her contibutions and the
reactions they provoked.
It must seem to certain new dwellers on this list that we are a bit of a
closed shop - set in our ways, with a history and a developed awareness of
each other - but I like to think that we are a tolerant, level headed group
of people (get me! All I know about any of you is derived from some black
and white text on my PC screen and the odd tape of wierdness - thanks Ben!)
who are pretty open minded. Perhaps BJ's departure is indicative not of our
lack of understanding of her individuality but of her actual inability to
settle down with us.
Oh well!

Subject: (exotica) (AFP) Ohio bans Manneken Pis beer
BRUSSELS, April 6 (AFP) - The US state of Ohio is banning a
Belgian white ale because the label features Brussels' famous
Manneken Pis -- a boy urinating -- the Brussels newspaper Le Soir
reported Thursday.
The Ohio liquor control agency said no to the brew -- also named
Manneken Pis -- because it runs afoul of a state law that prohibits
images deemed "grotesque or in bad taste," the French-language
newspaper said.
"A little boy urinating: that's vulgar," the agency's
spokeswoman Patty Haskins was quoted as telling Le Soir's New York
correspondent. "Add to that the name the yellow tint of the label,
and the product which suggests the color of urine.... It's gross."
Manneken Pis the statuette has been doing his thing on a street
corner in old Brussels since the 17th century, much to the delight
of tourists as well as Belgians who see it as a symbol of
irreverance.
Manneken Pis the beer accounts for 55 percent of Belgian suds
imported into the United States by the Paulaner group, which Le Soir
said is appealing the Ohio ruling.
The brew has "a soft dry taste and hints of orange," according
to Southern Draft Beer News, an Internet site.
Belgian beer has been part of a vogue for all kinds of things
Belgian in the United States, a trend that has also seen New York
City endowed with Belgian bistros featuring steamed mussels and
French fries.
But Mannekin Pis's run-in with the law in Ohio is not without
precedent.
In the 1990s another Belgian beer, Rose de Gambrinus, was banned
for its label featuring a naked woman frolicking with Gambrinus, the
mythical king of beer. The ban was lifted by the US Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in 1997 after it agreed that beer
labels can be considered works of art.

Subject: (exotica) [obits] Mary Smith McClain, Terence McKenna , Larry Stevens
*Mary Smith McClain
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Blues singer Mary Smith McClain,
better known to fans as ``Diamond Teeth Mary,'' died Tuesday. She
was believed to have been 97 or 98.
McClain was a teen-ager posing as a boy when she hopped a train
in her native West Virginia to begin a new life as a traveling
blues musician more than 80 years ago.
She went from singing at carnivals with the Rabbit Foot
Minstrels to the Chicago Blues Festival, New York City's Carnegie
Hall and Europe. She sang with such music greats as B.B. King, Duke
Ellington, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.
McClain, who once had diamonds set in her teeth, was considered
the world's oldest-performing true blues musician, appearing at
local clubs until two weeks ago.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 5 (UPI) - Blues singer Mary Smith
McClain,
known to her fans as "Diamond Mary," died Tuesday night in a St.
Petersburg,
Fla., nursing home at the age of 97.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Known as "Diamond Mary" because of the set of diamonds
embedded in her
front teeth, her singing career spanned 80 years. She performed with
Louis
Armstrong, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Billie
Holliday and Sarah Vaughn.
McClain toured with the USO in New Guinea during World War II.
After a
20-year hiatus from 1959 to 1979, she resumed her singing career. In
1982,
she performed for President Reagan in the White House.
McClain did not make her first commercial recording until
March 1993. The
record, "If I Can't Sell It, I'm Gonna Sit On It," quickly went to the
top
of the blues charts. She was noted for closing each of her performances
with
an up-tempo version of "Amazing Grace."
McClain was born in Huntington, W.Va., and asked that her
ashes be
scattered over the railroad tracks there. McClain hopped a train in
Huntington 80 years ago to begin her career.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) -- Terence McKenna, spiritual theorist
and author of several books proclaiming the virtues of psychedelic
mushrooms, died Monday of brain cancer. He was 53.
One of McKenna's best known books was 1975's ``The Invisible
Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I Ching,'' which he
co-wrote with his brother Dennis. ``Food of the Gods,'' published
in 1992, and 1993's ``True Hallucinations'' followed in the same
vein, exploring the idea of consciousness and its link with nature
and the environment.
McKenna traveled extensively through Asia, Europe and South
America before completing a self-tailored degree in Shamanology at
Berkeley in 1975.

Larry Stevens, the last surviving regular cast member of Jack Benny's
NBC radio show of the 1940s, died of liver cancer on April 5th,
according to his widow, Norma Stevens. He was 77 years old.
Stevens had been hired by Benny to be the show's singer after Dennis
Day, his predecessor, joined the U.S. Navy in November 1944. He left the
show when Day returned in March 1946.

Allright then, Nate and Charlie, what do you make of this?:
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., April 6 (UPI) - Lawmakers say the lack of
a
bestiality law makes Missouri look "like some kind of backward hillbilly
state."
State Rep. Catherine Hanaway of Des Peres told Thursday's St.
Louis
Post-Dispatch her constituents want to outlaw humans having sex with
animals.
A hearing was held Wednesday on a proposed bill that would
impose a
maximum five-year prison term and $5,000 fine on those convicted of
engaging
in sex with animals. Hanaway said she will try to attach the measure to
another bill during the legislative session.
Not prohibiting bestiality "makes us look like some kind of
backward
hillbilly state," Hanaway said.
Missouri banned bestiality until 1977 when the legislature
rewrote the
sodomy laws and accidentally left bestiality out of the measure. No one
noticed until George Willard of Carl Junction, Mo., published a book
about
his interest in 1994, sparking jokes about the Ozarks on "The Tonight
Show."
Hanaway said she has received more letters, phone calls and
e-mails on the
issue than any other this year.
"Once people get beyond the sensational aspect of this or the
vulgarity, I
think most Missourians would have a very difficult time trying to
rationalize why this should be legal," Katherine McGowan, a Humane
Society
of Missouri spokeswoman, told the Post-Dispatch.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
in New York
estimates 3 percent to 5 percent of the population is interested in
bestiality but few act on the urge.

There was a great programme a while ago on the telly here about an American
man who'd left his wife to marry a horse. It was the only state in the US
where it is still legal to marry an animal (and I assume that once married,
sex was OK). The man was really in love, and to be fair the horse looked
like it had found the right partner. They kissed rather well!
Anyway, Mr Louis Nytab, your example proves the point. By law in the US, it
is OK to roger a goat, but not OK to show a statue pissing water, on a beer
bottle. You all need to relax your nut clusters (thanks Col. Hugh
Jampton/Brian)!

Ron,
You're right. Despite my unchecked annoyance with the
sappy sign-off yesterday, I said as much myself
initially(though, ironically - and untentionally -
insulting her at the same time, because I did not
realize she was a she). Though I do feel that it's
better to ignore someone than lash out at them, and
that some of the ripostes were unduly harsh - I also
believe it is possible to address people civilly, and
to lighten up a bit. There was very little flexibility
there.
Not to sound like some Robert Fulghum geek, but
everyday life tells us if we jump on people constantly
they are not obliged to appreciate it, even though
theyhave the option to ignore us.
Now to absolutely forget about it all...
