The Sing-A-Long Sound of Music has proved to be so popular in London,
productions are headed for New York and, I think, San Francisco or maybe
it's LA. Bicoasters in the US, get yer liederhosen or nun suits ready.
Anthony Lane published a hilarious "Letter from London" about it in a
recent _New Yorker_. Y'all will be glad you tracked it down in your local
library. Guaranteed have the librarians shushing you.

He is a contemporary Italian artist. Just take a 50% of swingin'
Paolo Conte, add 25% tango and 25% balkanian ethnic stomp, and you'll
have your Capossela cocktail ready to be served!

In addition to weddings and supper clubs, he does RV

Oh for the lost paisano thread: my lp is signed and

Frankie, if nothing else, is one for an elegant

A trip to New Orleans can make you a fan of this music...
Especially when you see all these kids running around with drums or
horns improvising at will. I strongly suspect a return visit will get my
interest back again. Blues is another area I once lightly explored
but haven't been back to recently.

I think Will's jaw must surely be aching from the gum he still chews

There was serious demand for Blue Note originals and I remember
selling off the one I had for something rare and experimental. I don't
think anybody believed they would ever be reissued. I was never a
huge fan so it was no loss. In fact the one I had was from the
Dixieland collection and of minor interest, I think George Lewis.

We should do a survey - do women prefer CD's or LP's? I suspect
the majority will go for CDs. I have my own theories why but...

i must own it.
which reminds me, my copy of 'together again' by lee and nancy is a post
oil-crisis 'dynaflex' record, ie, you could bend it double and it ways,
maybe 60 grammes. it makes bold claims as to its sound quality and being the

i bought it in a charity shop and it's 25+ years old and sounds grand. any

Chief Walatghi & his Afro-Drummers: "Taboo" (Hallmark Records). The album
has a great cover which promises "exotic rhythms of THE JUNGLE". I have a
fondness for the disk as it is one of the first exotica records that I
bought, that and the fact that it was released on red vinyl. But truth be
told, the music is merely an ok exercise in African-tribal-exotica.
I think it is worth buying for $10 or so.
Curiously, the label credits the performer as "Chief Roha & the
Afro-Drummers" which makes me wonder if this recording was recycled several
times.

I have the Spaceheads self-titled debut on Red Note Records (not sure how
many releases they have). The duo featured Andy Diagram on vocals and
trumpet played through electronics and Richard Harrison on drums. Fun in a
"Blurt" kinda-way, but I think that you might find the outfit a bit on the
abrasive side.
Best track is "Eat the Machine" which features Matt Wand of Stock, Hausen
and Walkman manipulating Spacehead samples.

not about Spaceheads, but Andy Diagram has been working off and on over the
last couple of years with David (Pere Ubu) Thomas as "Two Pale Boys". His
trumpet with fx soloing incredible to see and hear. He also plays a major
part in the D Thomas composition/improvisation "Mirror Man" (along with
Linda Thompson & Peter Hammill amongst others) premiered here in London last
year and to be performed in North America this year.

All are listed as 'available' at the towerrecords.com website, though only
in low quantities. If the reader is interested in either the Denny or
Baxter double-sets you are advised to acquire them post-haste, as EMI has
been folded into the Time-Warner conglomerate.
Technically all Capitol-EMI product is currently without distribution, and
music retailers are waiting for the other shoe to drop, whether existing
stock simply needs to be re-barcoded or there will be a massive recall on
everything. I doubt this will mean The Beatles and Garth Brooks will
disappear from the shelves, but it's anyone's guess if obscure (and
expensive) doubles such as the Denny and Baxter
will survive the transition.
>>
Allow me to correct the inacuracies in Uncle Dave's posting:
1.) The Denny and Baxter CDs are in no danger of being unavailable. The
reason they are in low quantitles in Tower is due more to the Tower buyers'
reaction to the lower sales levels they are reaching than in reaction to the
impending EMI and Warner expected merger.
2.) The statement that Capitol-EMI is without distribution is totally false.
In the first place the required regulatory hearing has yet to even have
occured to decide if the merger creates any anti-trust or monploy laws. This
is not expected to occur before June at the earliest. Secondly It is business
at usual at both EMI and Warner's. There have been no layoffs within the
distribution companies. To do so now would be
from both a manpower and financial perspective like shooting yourself in the
foot as it is important for every label within each of EMI and Warner's
groups, even if there was no impending merger, to be as profitable as
possible.
3.) As with the MCA /Polygram/Universal merger which occured last year, as
long as a label is profitable it will remain intact. This is simple business
101 regardless a pending merger. There is expected to be some downsizing
between the two distribution companies as a merger would not require two
seperate sales forces at their current levels. However due to the increased
size of EMI and Warner's combined catalog and new releases being sold, a
larger sales/distribution force than either EMI or Warner's currently has is
required.
4.) Needless to say, because of what I wrote above, no recall on catalog
would be required. In fact this suggestion along with the idea that the UPC
codes would need to be changed is absolutely ludicrous. Can you imagine
record labels asking for their bread and butter profts from catalog sales
being lost due to a recall! Can you image the reception chain stores would
have if they were told massive amounts of their databases would have to be
changed due to UPC code changes! Just as with the previous
MCA/Polygram/Universal merger where no UPCs or product recalls ocurred, none
will happen in this case.
In a nutshell the only way these titles will disappear from shelves is if
they stop selling in quantites to make continued pressings unprofitable. The
initial investment on these catalog titles has been recouped years ago so on
a per-title basis they are far more profitable than releases by new artists.
Let me close by saying that exotica mailing list is useful to the extent that
the information which appears in the postings are factual. If you don't know
the facts please don't post what you think might be the truth without at
least acknowledging that your post is merely an opinion. This is how
falsehoods and unsubstantiated rumors start.
Let's try to keep the chicken little postings off this list and make it
better for everyone.

Okay, here'a an odd bit of recorded weirdness:
From the book "Weird Europe" there's a female urinating statue in Brussels =
that is sort of an attraction. There are "postcards and recordings of the =
song "Song of Jeanneke Pis" available for sale - all of the proceeds go to =
charity."
Anybody heard THAT song??
FYI - There's also a male pissing statue called "Manneken Pis" in Burssels =
also.
