Personally, I dig the Ravi Harris disc. It's not something I would listen to
all in one sitting since it has a similar sound throughout. But, a few
tracks at a time, it is quite groovy

A friend is searching for a record he vaguely remembers from
his youth. It was a novelty 45, probably titled "Dr. Livingston
I Presume?" and that's about all he can remember, other than
thinking it was hilarious.
A search of the ASCAP and BMI web pages turned up a few items.
This one seems the most likely to me, since it was published
by Felsted Music, who were responsible for some oddball records:
DR LIVINGSTONE I PRESUME BMI Work #339333
Writer: THOMAS RAYMOND
Publishers: FELSTED MUSIC CORPORATION BMI
PALACE MUSIC CO LTD PRS
Unfortunately, I was unable to find a recording artist listed
for this one.
I know that Artie Shaw recorded an instrumental with the same
title, but I don't think that's what he's looking for.
There's also a Moody Blues song, but that's not the one either.
Anybody on the list know what this could be?
In research mode,

Subject: Re: (exotica) Re: Ravi Harris and chinese music question.
as i recall, the major gripe with the record was that it wasn't genuine
60s/70s sitar funk as it claimed to be. if you listen to the record the
sound is, indeed, very modern, particularly the bass (although the reissue
pressings that BBE records produce all have a very deep, warm, pronounced
bass sound (except where the original can't support it) and are thus very
handy for the modern dancefloor) there don't seem to be any effects used not
of the period. i would think the record was made on vintage equipment.
although, and here's the rub, the record actually never claims, if you read
the liner notes carefully, to *actually* be genuine old recordings. they
just give the impression that this is some mad old forgotten shit rather
than some people having a lark. a scam if you like. but if you like the
record (and i do, but it's not a huge favourite) there is no scam.
funnily enough i was playing a night of indian/ pakistani music in a hard
house club last night, and i didn't even consider bringing this record
along, although i did play quite a bit of non-genuine indian music. it's
just too chill for a dancefloor (particularly one as up as an indian night).
well there was a large chinese contingent there.
does anyone know any decent chinese dance music? i mean dance in the sense
that intersects with this list.

He's probably thinking of NYC's Janie Grant on "Are You Still Using That
Greasy Kid Stuff?" backed by the Hutch Davie Orchestra and reaching the #74
on Billboard position in mid 1962.... JB/proud owner of the single

Subject: (exotica) F & T meets The Joker's Wild
Howdy kidlets,
I was the fella what told everyone here about Art Ferrante & Lou Teicher
reforming. I've become good email pals with their manager Scott Smith.
Here's a snippet of some fascinating background into the path of their
career:
>>----Art & Lou never had a manager in the old days.
After 12 years 1948-1960--they were probably about to hang it up. The
prepared piano recordings were a huge flop---their classical
concerts--although reviewed as fabulous--were not yielding much of a crowd.
It was Don Costa (producer-k) who experimented with various combinations of
music who
finally hit upon the huge commercial radio success. At that time the
two-piano genius of F & T flew right out the window! So--since 1960 they
have been serving up every hackneyed cliche known (or not known) to popular
music. They always said---which would you rather do? Play in a converted
boxing ring for 250 people---or play the Hollywood Bowl for 18,990---an
attendance record to this day! Plus---they were getting older--late 30's by
that time--and they were getting tired of no recognition---needless to say
they had very little money!
The success of the Apartment and Exodus completely changed their
approach--and I can understand that. The sound was great until about
1970---after Midnight Cowboy. Having another Top 10 single at that time was
the worst possible thing--because they then starting becoming HIP!!! Wrong
move!!!! Radio had changed and the only format on which they could be heard
was "beautiful music". Even the beautiful music programmers told them that
their arrangements were way too big-----go to the lush sound---EZ elevator
music ---if you want to be programmed. So they did! The 70's turned out
90%
schlock. Nick Perito (2nd producer-k) pushed up the orchestra and drowned
out the pianos--so
Art & Lou starting writing less and less piano parts!<<<<
And he had this to say:
>>>>Regarding Exotica digest----you can mention that F & T are in the planning
stages of some new recordings----but please don't be too specific! I'd hate
to disappoint anyone!
We don't yet know what the actual song titles will be---as they are
"experimenting" with the sounds and what specifically they can do with
certain melodies. They might do Cole Porter---and then again they might do
"Titanic"---I just don't know yet!<<<<
Let's have a collective crossing of the fingers that they don't go with
Titanic, OK listees?
Not long after that last email segment (Sept.'99) , one of them became a bit
ill, and the practicing slowed to an ebb. So I guess to sum it up, we're
still waiting, and I wouldn't hold my breath as to when and if something
comes of it. Man, if I could be a fly on the wall as they stuff their
piano's fulla crap and PLAY!
In other news: Indy, good ears---Perrey & Kingsley's THE SAVERS was The
Joker's Wild theme.
Sayonara,
Keith

The same situation with the Crippled Dick's release of The Third Wave from
MPS. The bass is strong, not very warm, however, and doesn't fit well mixed
with other hippie pop of the same ilk not yet remastered. The 2000-print LP
does come with a poster though....JB

I LOVE non-english sung r&r/beat from the 50's & the 6ts. I mean,
just as much as the english-sung, which is undoubtely better when it
comes to music quality, but hasn't that exotic feel that only
unconventional singing can add.
I think the most brilliant and funny music of this kind comes from
South America (check out "Rare Mexican Cuts Of The Sixties", on the
French Eva label, "Sons Of Yma - A Collection of Peruvian Garage and
Instrumental Bands From the 60's", or the already mentioned vol. 2 of
"Planetary Pebbles" on A.I.P., called "Exitos A Go-Go". My favorite
combo of the lot is "Los Locos del Ritmo").
But I agree also the 6Ts music from the ex-communist countries is
fun. (While we're on the subject, I felt depressed when I read on the
back cover of "Planetary Pebbles, vol. 1: Surfbeat Behind The Iron
Curtain" that tracks from England and Italy were also included: will
someone please teach A.I.P. the ABC of history and geography?).
As for Czerwono Czarni, one track of theirs has been actually
reissued on the lp-only comp. "Project Blue, vol. 1: Back to the
Basements" on Destination X recs (2 more vols out, n.3 focusing
on Hong Kong bands). The record was released on 500 numbered copies,
but if you're interested I think I still can find some, as the label
happens to be from Bologna, my hometown, and I know the guy who runs
it. The only track reissued is "Big-Beatland" from 1967, and the
liner notes say: "a quite stupid title but groovy sounds for this
Poland combo. They recorded something like two lp's in their home
country but the other stuff is pretty forgettable".
Another little Italian label (Reverendo Moon, from Rome) put out an
lp comp called "Czechoslovakian Beat, 65-68". More recently has come
out "Yugobeat - 16 Mid-Sixties Punkers From Jugoslavia".
And French-sung Canadian garage-punk is great (Les Lutins, Les
Miserables, and the Purple Haze translated version as "Vapeur mauve"
by the Haunted kicks ass), and I also find Japanese garage an
absolute killer (two great comps out: "G.S. I Love You" and "G.S. I
Love You Too", both on cd).
I'm just mad about these things, and if out there someone shares this
insane passion of mine, I'll be more than happy to trade some of this
obscure recordings.
From behind the bologna curtain,
yours truly

I just received the latest issue of 'The Realist', and inside there is a
very good interview from 1960 with radio personality Jean Shepherd.
Thought you all would like to read the following short excerpt...
- -----------
" Well, the weirdest thing that I've seen recently - I was working on a
movie script for the Durochemont Corporation, and it involved a trip on
a Navy vessel, and I was in a forward gun turret of this cruiser, and
these guys are getting orders, and all the stuff is going - radarscope
and everything - and what do you think they've got? They've got a
little metal loudspeaker hanging over them and the ship has a record
room and it's playing Montovani records.
Well, my God, I never would've believed it, but these guys are - "Off
40 degrees to the left, 17 degrees starboard" - they're getting ready to
fire a missile - and Montovani is playing "Sleepy Lagoon." They've got
mood music. Dimitri Tiomkin will be writing original music for
cruisers. "Music to Drop a Bomb By."
- ---------
This is from issue #143 (Spring 2000) of the Realist - it has a salute
to'Peanuts' on the front cover.

I've done a huge selling job on this one myself since I got it and thanks surely
go to Br. Cleve for first mentioning it to me. Remember the context
of this one? It was first mentioned in response to a question I put to
the list about the very unique sound of The Bobby Hughes
Experience which I'd heard on another compilation. It went on from
there and I came to much the same conclusion as you did Chuck,
that this is a direction I want to pursue!
So... I would have to recommend Ursula 1000 as Jimmy says. It is
in a class of its own and one of our all time favourites of recent
years! You then must get The Bobby Hughes Experience "Fusa
Riot" (Ultimate Dilemma). I also think you would like the "Jet
Society" comp. (18th Street Lounge) where I first heard The Bobby
Hughes Experience. It also contains a great piece by the German
group Mo'Horizons. I later got a CD of theirs that is quite good
itself. The rest of "Jet Society" is more Bossa inspired but I'm
certain you will like it all the same. Also highly recommended is
the DJ You DJ Me "Simplemachinerock" release. Of course we've
searched all the aritist, labels, etc. that Br. Cleve recommended
and while hard to source, good news is they are becoming more
available... If the mail ever returns to normal here, I expect a CD by
The Resident Filters, Mint Royale and Jacknife Lee, three of the
best artists on Kinky Beats. Also, I've put this off all week but I'm
going to go today to listen to one of the comps on FSUK (Future
Sounds of the United Kingdom) which has a lot of these groups on
them. The store here only has volume 2 and there are 4 volumes
with 2 CD's in each. I suspect they are compiled from a lot of
these hard to find 12" singles. They cost a whopping CDN$36 each
(plus 15.5% tax) but nothing from the UK ever comes in here with a
reasonable price tag. Quite different from Europe, but I suspect the
relative strength (and weakness) of our respective currencies has
something to do with it.
Chuck, let me know if you don't have those posts from Br. Cleve as
we've compiled a small list of names, labels, etc... from them. As
we find more I will share our discoveries with the list and of course
with our listeners!
My philosophy on this music was that if I start to like dance music,
(I was one of those "death to Disco" types back in the 70's) there
must be something to this! As I suspected, featuring this music on
our show a few weeks back generated a record number of calls and
interest. Our City, like many others, is still caught up in that mind
numbing techno which I've always detested, so the dance music
stores here were of no use whatsoever. Technoids do not generally
have much of a sense of humour and this music most certainly
does! Seems the good old Acid Jazz section is the safest place to
find this stuff for now...
Happy hunting!

Subject: (exotica) Bags
I am looking at ordering some vinyl bags to cover some
of my nicer albums. But Bags Unlimited offers like 40
different choices. Well, not forty, but I do have the
choice between
12 5/8 inch and 12 3/4 inch. I like the tighter bag,
I think, unless it's a pain.
Also I can choose between 2, 3, 4 and 6 mils.
What do I know?
I dunno.
Anyone have any favorites, tips, wisdom or psychotic
ramblings they could impart?
Thanks,
Peter

My favorite track on the much-discussed "Kinky Beats" comp is "Jackie in
Action," by Soul Mission. Anyone have any information on these guys? The only
clue given by the liners is that they must be from Japan. A search to find
more music (hell, any music) by them has been futile.

Subject: (exotica) Soundproof vs. Soundblast
For a few years I had assumed that "Soundproof" and "Soundblast" by F&T were
the same LP or maybe that one was the stereo version of the other. Just
today, I came across a copy of "Soundblast" and have found it is a totally
different LP with totally different tracks. Both are mono. This is
certainly good news on the one hand since I've got another whole LP of F&T
prepared piano material. On the other hand, I realize that I have been
living and spreading a lie (move over Jimmy Swaggart). I just changed my
website which used to recommend "Soundproof (a.k.a. Soundblast)" to now
recommend both LPs
Now if I can just find that elusive copy of "Adventure in Carols"...
Also, it seems to me that someone on the list once said that the LP "We've
Got Rhythm" was "Blast Off" with added orchestra (like they did with their
Heavenly Sounds LPs). If anyone has the scoop on this, your input would be
appreciated.

I went and pulled what I thought was my dupe copy of Soundproof. It is in
fact a stereo copy of Soundproof which matches up track for track with my
mono copy of Soundblast. However, the stereo and mono copies of Soundproof
have totally different tracks!
Mono Soundproof (WP 6014) which is also a promo lists the following tracks:
What is This Thing Called Love?
El Cumbanchero
Greensleeves
Mississippi Boogie
Mermaid Waltz
Man From Mars
Baia
Breeze and I
Someone to Watch Over Me
African Echoes
Dark Eyes
Lover
Mono Soundblast (promo) (WP 6041) and stereo Soundproof (WST 15011) list
these tracks:
Peg-leg Meringue
Brazil
Poinciana
Mama yo Quero
Orchids in the Moonlight
Cumana
Tico-Tico
Frenesi
Mexican Hat Dance
Siboney
Loose Ends Meringue
La Cucaracha
And Peter has the stereo Soundblast which apparently matches the latter list.
Mystery solved!
The stereo and mono Soundproof do have the same picture on the front cover
and same liner notes. Mono Soundblast has totally different liner notes.
