*Mary Sorrentino
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) -- Mary Sorrentino, who was one of the
city's last restaurateurs with links to Palm Springs' movie colony
days, died Tuesday of cancer. She was 78.
Sorrentino and ex-husband Bill Sorrentino opened their first
restaurant in Toluca Lake, on the edge of Los Angeles, in 1944. Bob
and Dolores Hope were among their first customers and they remained
friends when the Sorrentinos opened their Palm Springs seafood
house in 1966.
Frank Sinatra developed his Steak Sinatra recipe with Bill
Sorrentino and it is still served at the restaurant. Sinatra
celebrated his 60th birthday at Sorrentinos and often visited the
kitchen staff when he dined there.

*Fred Rhoads
GREENWOOD, S.C. (AP) -- Fred Rhoads, a cartoonist of the
post-World War II ``Sad Sack'' comics, has died. He was 78.
Rhoads died Sunday from complications of Alzheimer's disease in
Greenwood, where he lived since December.
The cartoonist drew the exaggerated life of a World War II GI
trying to cope with a civilian's life in ``Sad Sack'' comic books.
The cartoon was initially created for Yank Magazine during the
war -- with the character a luckless draftee -- by George Baker. It
was resuscitated by Harvey Comics after the war.
Rhoads was one of the artists who worked on the postwar ``Sad
Sack'' comic books, helping illustrate the character's comic woes
for more than 20 years.
He once recalled that Baker's contributions were sometimes a
little racy.
``He was used to drawing for men in the service,'' Rhoads once
said. ``His humor tended to be more dirty. More sexy. And that
didn't work as well in the comic book.''
Rhoads once sued Harvey Comics for more of the profits for his
efforts on ``Sad Sack'' comic books. A Pima County Superior Court
awarded him $2.6 million in the early 1980s, but that ruling was
reversed in the Arizona Court of Appeals.
Rhoads also assisted ``Beetle Bailey'' creator Mort Walker,
Jimmy Hatlo, who did ``They'll Do It Every Time,'' and Fred
Lasswell, who created ``Snuffy Smith.''
More recently, Rhoads worked for the Tucson (Ariz.) Citizen as
an editorial cartoonist in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Rhoads studied art illustration in New York City from 1940-1942
until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II.

*Lynn Shults
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Lynn Shults, a state Correction
Department spokesman who in a previous career helped discover
country music superstar Garth Brooks, died Thursday of an apparent
heart attack. He was 55.
Shults, who just joined the state Correction Department on Feb.
1, collapsed after an afternoon meeting.
Shults had a long career in the music industry, including jobs
with Acuff-Rose Publishing Co., Capitol Records, Atlantic Records,
and Billboard magazine. He was with Capitol in 1988 when the label
initially decided against signing Brooks.
``Lynn came out to a showcase and Garth happened to be one of
the performers,'' said Bob Doyle, Brooks' manager. ``He had the
courage to kind of rethink his earlier decision and advocated
signing Garth.''
- ---
STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- Eliot A. Caplin, a writer who devised
the plots for a number of well-known comic strips, died Feb. 20. He
was 86.
Caplin cooperated with artists who produced strips like ``Heart
of Juliet Jones,'' ``Big Ben Bolt'' and ``Dr. Bobbs.''
Caplin was the brother of ``L'il Abner'' cartoonist Al Capp.
Although the brothers never collaborated on a strip, Capp
conceived two strips that he passed along to Caplin. One, ``Abbie
an' Slats,'' which was drawn by Raeburn van Burne, lasted 23 years.
The other was ``Long Sam,'' drawn by Bob Lubbers.
Capp shortened his name from Caplin so it would fit better in
comic strips.
Caplin received little personal publicity because he wrote for
different feature syndicates that were not eager to promote someone
who also wrote for their competitors, his son, Donald, told The New
York Times.
Caplin also wrote many plays, including ``Any Resemblance to
Persons Living or Dead,'' which was produced off Broadway in 1971.
Caplin studied at Brown University and Ohio State University. He
earned a Purple Heart in World War II after being injured aboard a
minesweeper in the Pacific.

Irish folksinger enjoys virtual wake
Traditional Irish musician and singer Liam Clancy has said he has enjoyed
his own "virtual wake" on the internet after an American radio station
announced he had died.
He received over 1,200 condolences and tributes on his homepage within hours
of his misreported death.
Liam Clancy and his brothers were folk hits in the 60s
"It is a very eerie feeling to get a preview of your own death," he said.
"People sent in memories of me and wonderful tributes."
Clancy said a man with the same name had died in the US and a New York
university radio station announced his death and then ran a special tribute
programme broadcasting his songs.
Members of the folk singer's family even telephoned his home from the United
States to find out about the funeral arrangements and were shocked when he
answered their calls.
With his brothers and singer Tommy Makem, Liam Clancy enjoyed huge success
in the folk boom of the 1960s.
The singer said that when the mistake was discovered his nephew sent him an
e-mail asking "How are things in Hell?"

THOUSANDS BID ADIEU TO THE VETERAN COMEDIAN
Kozhikode - The body of veteran comedian of Malayalam
screen Kuthiravattom Pappu, who died here last evening,
was consigned to flames at the Mavoor Road crematorium
this afternoon.
Earlier, his body was kept in the Bhashaposhini Library
before being taken to the town hall in a flower decked
van. Kerala finance minister T. Sivadasa Menon, cine
actors Mohanlal, Jayaram, Jagathi Sreekumar, Oduvil
Unnikrishnan, Kunjandi, Janardanan, Zeenath, director
V.N. Vinu, lyricist Girish Puthencherry and CPM leaders
M. Dasan and C.P. Kunju were among hundreds of people who
thronged the actor's house to pay their last respects.
The 62-year-old comedian, who had acted in more than 1000
films in a career spanning four decades, leaves behind a
history enscripted with his peculiar dialogue rendition
and down-to-earth characters in the minds of Malayalam
cine goers, reports UNI.

Been off for a week, Laid some Exotica and groovy soundtracks on the
Fashion conscious public at 40 degrees at Earls Court again. Bit less
traumatic than last time, although we saw off new boys band 'Northern Line'
(stage too small, didn't like our ambiance) and Giorgio from Nightmares on
Wax, (turned up late, was double booked against us and sulked when his
'representative' couldn't bully us off. wanker).
But anyway, Got 13 and Cowboy in Sweden on Vinyl last weekend on Smells Like
Records. I was a bit disappointed with 13 at first, the reviews of it made
a lot of play on the fact that it was arranged by someone who did cartoon
soundtracks, so I was expecting something a lot more off the wall. When
what you got was somewhere between solid funk, Staxy ballads and Soft Parade
era Doors. The Juxtaposition of Lee Hazlewoods voice over the Funk tracks
that open up each side is a little bizarre at first, but I think its a
great record, if very short, but no way worth the silly money the original
is supposed to go for.
Cowboy in Sweden is more Lee Hazlewood in customary Country-ish mode. I
swear I know half the songs on here, the just settle into your song
memories so nicely. Did Johnny cash ever cover any Lee Hazlewood songs?
'pray them bars way' just sounds custom made for him. Apart from that
spent hours browsing the charity shops and nothing at all to show for it
apart from a Pierre Cardin suit for the summer (7 pounds), not a sniff of a
decent record. Never mind.
Thanks for all that on Shriners I was sorry I asked at one stage, but if
you got to worry about world domination why look any further than the WTO?
They don't even try to hide it.
But then again, Nat might be right, Stand up for yourself! Burn your

After being swamped with requests for this information, I'll post all
that I have on the subject it to the list. I think the discussion first
began around the subject of a type of music that mixed new and
old sounds to create something quite unique, likely relating to The
Bobby Hughes Experience... BTW, I've picked up FSUK volumes 2
& 3 compilations and they're less "refined" than Kinky beats but
very much in the same style (also a mix of originals and remixes)
and well worth giving a listen to.

I would also add the AtaTak - City Space compilation to the above
list, for a different take on the subject! City Space 2 is a bit more

they are both available via the AtaTak website if all else fails. I
think that was how we got them, back in 1991:

Also I've attached Moritz's explanation of City Space as there is no

Quite intuitive given the constant 'density' of bits in the media.
The next obvious question is whether the audio properties of an LP are
superior for the first track where you get effectively more grove distance
per unit of time (given the fixed rotational speed)?

Okay, we're now curious to know who else is in the club. I already

We realize this is straight off topic (but I can tell that being a

Tonight I noticed that The Three Suns make an extended audio cameo
appearance in Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "Rope" (1948).
The official credit is "Radio Sequence by The Three Suns."
About halfway through the film, a character turns on a radio... music plays
in the background for a little while. And it is indeed The Three Suns, in
their earlier, softer mode. With some orchestra and wordless chorus
accompanying them now and then.
Anyone know anything more about this? Thanks.

Yes, that would be us. Alexander will be 4 in June - he's been
listening to exotica music pretty much since he was conceived - and he
loves to bring all his musical instruments into one place, and play
along with whatever music is on the stereo - especially if it's Peter
Thomas, for some reason!
It's really neat to see how a child can relate to this music - in my
case (and many of the others, I suspect) we were probably listening to
much the same music at that age, too!

Me too, my son is 3 1/2. Right now his favorite song is "Mickey" by Toni
Basil. His favorite video (musically) is the Cramps rawther lewd vid for
"Ultra Twist." Previously he's gone through big B-52s and Talking Heads
phases. What can I say? He's got a strong New Wave gene. One of my biggest
thrills of parenthood was driving to work one day (where his daycare is also)
and hearing him softly sing along with the radio (he was barely 2): "Sweet
Jane...Sweet Jane..."

Full time dad to two boys. Jesse 3 1/2 - bought up on Moondog as sleep music
for the first 18 months now a fan of "robot music" as he calls it
(Kraftwerk, Air, YMO) and Luke 5 months, a sometime "Soothing Sounds For
Babies" guinea pig.
Less time for record hunting but it has got me buying old children's
records. Some of which are great (most not).

I never noticed any difference in the noise the CD drive makes during the
beginning of the CD as compared to the end. But you are right: the digital
units burnt into the CD all have the same size, unlike the waves of a vinyl
groove, which are getting shorter and shorter the nearer the record comes to
the end.

More groove distance? No. Longer waves - yes. But wether that's an advantage I
doubt; it definitely means there will be more dust particles per inch. It
could be of a certain advantage for very high frequences, as you can squeeze
them better in a longer groove. A higher speed also means more pressure energy
on the needle, which could result in a bit more dynamic range, as in a Maxi,
compared to an LP. It also means the record should wear off faster in the
beginning than in the end of a record side. I doubt though that you will be
able to actually hear any of these differences.

My son Ely (pronounced E-Lee -- like the old Tarzan star Ron Ely) will be 3
in July. He grew up (and out) with Exotica as I played it loud enough so he
could hear it in the womb.
One of my many fanaticisms, is collecting Magnavox consoles and record
players. The bigger the console the better. Well, when he was born, I added
console number 3 and needed a place to put it. So it logically went into the
baby's room ("He needs music in there!" I told my wife.) For the longest
time Exotica (1) was his favorite, particularly Hong Kong Blues (he liked all
the banging and clanging). I swear to God, one of the first statements was
"Play Martin Denny."
Real excitement came when we switched over to The Enchanted Tiki Room album.
BTW, to show how kind this List's members are, a fellow member found out I
was looking for a Tiki Room album and offered to send me his, no charge. I
nearly cried when later he told me he had had it since his teenage years. I
eventually located a copy my self and graciously returned the original to it
"rightful" owner.
Anyway, he knows all the words to the Tiki Room album. For some reason,
every so often, something will set him off and in the middle of what he is
doing he will say, "Ahhhhh, buenos dias senorita, my siestas are getting
chorter and chorter, oh look at all the people, and welcome to Walt Disney's
Enchanted Tiki Room. Michael, mi amigo, pay attention it's show time . . . .
.So it is! And what darling people I have sitting under me . . . . . . . . "
He even does the accents and inflections! It makes a daddy proud.
I also have the Tiki Room tracks on my computer and will play them that way
for him (as I try to type while he sits on my lap). We were at a restaurant
the other night and the waiter entered the order on one of those touch screen
computers and Ely asked him, "Would you play the Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room?"
Ely can correctly identify Martin Denny in pictures and album covers. I tell
ya, the child is brilliant!
The current craze, it listening to Tomorrow Land's Carousel of Progress Show
(the "Now Is The Time" version).
I recently added yet another Magnavox console. A 1964 unit that is the
biggest one yet (15 bucks - Salvation Army). I had to locate it in the
garage/workshop. That's OK tho, it insures LP play while he and I fiddle in
the garage.
And I hope not to offend, but I am keeping him away from that punk rock stuff.

When my nephew George was six, his dad planned a pretty exciting weekend: a
basketball game with the Chicago Bulls (Michael Jordon, one of George's
heros) and, mostly for dad, a show at the Philly community center that was
the Sun Ra Archestra's home base. George was blown away by Sun Ra, and
small wonder. In the traditional parade round the hall that highlighted Sun
Ra shows, the Master Himself spotted George and led the parade over to a
squirty, thrilled little boy. In school the next day George was called up
for Show N Tell. "Here's the thing," my brother said. "George didn't even
mention seeing Air Jordon, like most kids would. He talked about Sun Ra and
how cool the music was." And George's favorite song from childhood? "Nights
in Tunesia." That's rearing a child right.
Nice thread. Thanks Giovanni. Mimi =20

I recall that a good while ago someone mentioned a forthcoming book
called "Second Hand: A Novel; by Michael Zadoorian."
I notice that the book is now available.
Can anyone who reads it provide a short review? Thumbs up, down, whatever?
Thanks!

maybe it was "Mister Livingston" by larry Verne, a follow-up to his
"Mister Custer" which hit #1 in the 1960 billboard hot 100. he did a whole
LP around the same concept, but Livingston & Custer are the stand-outs.

Good LP - it has a track called Beatnik - his
character being a southern country boy who wanders

and jazz -

Thanks to all those that helped me out with the Grandmaster Flash
mystery. It is indeed Super Rappin' Theme! Now a follow-up
question... Are there different versions of this piece? The sample I
heard from one of the comps at CDNow sounded a bit different than
the one I have. Then there's a reference to a piece called Super
Rappin No.1 on another compilation.

I doubt ENJOY records has reisued a CD of the above. I've
discovered that GM Flash is found in a lot of compilations! Not
surprising considering how ahead of its time this music was. Does
anyone have any recommendations, preferably with this piece
included? I'm a bit lost given the volume of output and reissues
available.
