The Vinyl Museum here, a warehouse-like store and one of the first of its
kind here, closed on Saturday and boy am I glad.
I hauled more records out of there in the last month than in the any
previous year.
Hundreds for a dime, a quarter, fifty cents.
It was too much.  Especially now that my easy listening tastes cover just
about every manifestation imaginable.

Here are a few random highlights:

in the category of "whodathunk?"...
Roy Budd, his electric piano and orchestra play the music of Gilbert
O'Sullivan

in the category of "Those 101 strings can really surprise you"...
101 Strings Orchestra play Jim Webb
and 101 Strings "Here come the Birds".
They are a very funky bunch, that's all I can say.

in the category of "soft dreary stuff can be really beautiful"...
Charlie Byrd (the late) "Aquarius"  The best combo of wimpy and funky I've
ever heard.
and Francis Lai "A Man and a Woman", not the soundtrack, just a bunch of
covers like "McArthur's Park".  A beautiful record, featuring that electric
accordion

in the category of classic Now Sound
"Pet Project", the Bob Florence Big Band plays Pet Clark hits.  Need I say
more?
Billy Vaughn "A Current Set of Standards"  Amazing quasi-moog version of
Rosemary's Baby among other things
"The Button Down Brass featuring the funky trumpet of Ray Davies"  Classic.
"My World", Dieter Zimmerman.  On Polydor.  One of those James Lasty things
that actually sounds like you always hope he'll sound like.

in the category of jazzy Now Sound plus wacked-out instrumentals with
occasional moments of electric sitar...
The Paul Horn Quintet "Monday Monday"  (featuring, of course, Bill Plummer)

in a similar category but no electric sitar..
Don Randi plays Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet

and finally, in the DJ-friendly category of AfroCuban Latin Now Sound... I
guess you could put Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria in this category.  The
really expensive used record DJ store here, which features stuff like this
and puts out Joe Cain's "Latin Explosion" for fifty bucks, would like these
records:

"The Now Sound of the Ray Rivera Orchestra"  (on MGM's "Latino Series".
"The Moods of Miami 68" Luis Varona
Both great records.
And la piece de resistance, because it's a record I would buy just for the
title and for the cover but it turns out to be really hot...

"Boogaloo in Apartment 41" Ozzie Torrens and his exciting orchestra.
The kind of record that makes me want to become a DJ.

I have to go and watch my favourite TV show in the world now.  "Blind
Date".  I'll post the more loungey highlights later.  I bet you can't wait.

btw,  fleming sold the rights to Casino to CBS in the 1950's for a tv show
and Never was based on Thunderball that the "screenplay" rights were so to
(oh God, i am not sure if this is correct) Richard Maiubaum -- that is how
Connery did the re-make.

I know fans don't consider them part of the series but since they feature
the same character James Bond (or variations) and are derived from the
Fleming novels (however losely) then all us non-fans will consider them
James Bond films and let the franchise worry about itself.

I have this one, Les McCann Ltd. - "Bucket O' Grease" on Limelight. Mid to
late 60s, I'd say. Proclaimed to be Latin boogaloo. A nice set of
jazz/Latin/funk numbers:

Recorded live in the studio, with an audience encouraged to make noise and
have fun. The funky "Yesterday" has a really odd half time/clashing chords
thing going on on the intro and bridges. And yeah, "Music To Watch Girls
By" is pretty cool, as usual.

Les plays piano. Also features Plas Johnson (yeah!) on sax & flute, Lynn R.
Blessing on vibes (in a Cal Tjaderish vein), Lee Katzman on trumpet &
fluegelhorn... and a rhythm section that I'm too tired to type out.

Funny thing, the cover and label say it's the mono version, but when I play
it, it's the stereo version!


And speaking of Julie Andrews (Brian)...

   LOS ANGELES, Dec 20 (AFP) - Reggae legend Joe Higgs, who was
best known for his coaching of Bob Marley, has died of cancer. He
was 59.
   Higgs died at his Los Angeles home Saturday night, the Los
Angeles Times reported.
   Known as the father of reggae music, Higgs spent years
instructing a young Marley in Kingston, Jamaica. The late Marley
later credited Higgs for his international success.
   Higgs also worked with other reggae artists, including Bunny
Wailer, Peter Tosh, Bob Andy, Derrick Harriot, and the Wailing
Souls.
   Higgs moved to Los Angeles 15 years ago because his music about
the plight of the poor in his homeland was frowned upon by the
ruling political party.
   He continued to tour and work with American reggae musicians
until his death.
   Higgs is survived by 12 children.

    NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Marion Worth, who had hit country music
records in the early 1960s, died of emphysema Sunday. She was 64.
    Worth, a native of Birmingham, Ala., was known as ``Lady
Marion'' for her dignified bearing and soft, melodic voice.
    ``She was the Patti Page of country music,'' said her friend
Jean Shepard, a fellow singer on the Grand Ole Opry radio show.
    Worth's biggest hit was ``That's My Kind of Love,'' in 1960.
After it reached No. 5, she followed it up with the No. 7 hit ``I
Think I Know.''
    Born Mary Ann Ward, she got her start by winning a Birmingham
talent contest. That led to a show on WVOK Radio. She joined the
cast of the Grand Ole Opry radio show in 1963 and stayed on until
the mid-1970s.
    Worth's other hits include ``Shake Me I Rattle (Squeeze Me I
Cry)'' and ``Slipping Around,'' a duet with George Morgan.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - ``Lady'' Marion Worth, sultry ballad singer on the
Grand Ole Opry for 17 years, died Sunday at Tennessee Christian Medical Center
of complications from emphysema, her daughter Joyce said on Monday.

Worth, one of the first country music performers to appear at Carnegie Hall,
was 64.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, she learned piano from her father but later
took up guitar. After working for a time as a bookkeeper for a recording
company, she launched  her music career with her own radio show.

During the 1950s she was one of several female singers, including Loretta Lynn
and Kitty Wells, who broke down the tradition of using women only as background
singers in country music.

The petite singer performed on the Opry from 1963 until her retirement in 1980.
Her recordings for Columbia and Decca Records included her top hit ``Shake Me,
I Rattle'' which crossed over into pop and became a Christmas song, ``Crazy
Arms'', ``Are You Willing, Willie'', ``A Woman Needs Love'' and ``Mama Says''.

Exotica Queen Yma Sumac Returns On New
Compilation, Plans Tour

Lounge enthusiasts with an ear for the bizarre who find themselves
with some extra cash after the holidays my want to keep an eye out
for a new 21-track collection from exotica queen Yma Sumac.

The diva (whose five-octave range reached a new generation of
fans on Capitol Records' recent "Ultra Lounge" series) will see the
release of "The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection" on January 11,
and is also planning to tour in support of the album.

In addition to some of Sumac's best known (and most off-beat)
tracks, the collection will also carry three previously unreleased
tunes: "Negrito Filomino," "Huayno" and "Inca Waltz."

Sumac lore holds that the singer hails from Ichocan, Peru (high in
the Andes mountains) and was brought to the U.S. by musicologist
Moises Vivanco. While the singer claimed her given name was
Ziola Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo and that she was a
direct descendent of Incan emperor Athualpa, others maintain that
Sumac is actually Brooklyn's Amy Camus.

Regardless of this murky background (or perhaps because of it),
Sumac hooked up with Capitol Records and turned her blend of
traditional South American songs and cocktail sounds into a string
of successful albums in the '50s. Sumac ranked with that era's giants
of exotica like Les Baxter and Martin Denny, but slipped from favor
after the '50s drew to a close.

With the retro-lounge movement of the mid-to-late '90s, Sumac
gained new commercial life when Capitol released the "Ultra
Lounge" series as well as a number of her classic titles including
"Voice Of Xtabay," "Mambo," and "Legend Of The Sun Virgin."

I can't tell you more about the man, but I can recommend his compilation in
Verve's Talkin' Verve series. Eighteen tracks, including the great "Compared to
what?", a cover of "Goin' out of my head" and of course "Watermelon man".
And did you know that in my CD collection Les McCann is filed between Shelly
Manne and Tommy McCook? Just for your information...

    PARIS (AP) -- Robert Bresson, the film director whose austere
approach helped redefine French cinema and paved the way for
France's New Wave movement, has died, French television reported
today. He was 98.
    The LCI channel quoted members of Bresson's family as saying the
director died Saturday. No cause of death was given.
    Often using untrained actors coached to speak in flat monotones,
Bresson believed the most poignant stories defied words and were
best told with images.
    Critics said Bresson played a unique role in the development of
French cinema. A man who defied categorization, he was the ultimate
loner, belonging to no particular school of cinematography.
    In ``Pickpocket,'' (1959) widely regarded as his most brilliant
film, Bresson pared down the compulsive art of lifting wallets to
its barest psychological elements. Coinciding with the budding New
Wave cinema, the film became a reference for the generation of
young filmmakers spearheaded by Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc
Godard.
    In ``La Femme Douce'' (1969), starring the 19-year-old Dominique
Sanda in her first screen role, Bresson painted an ironic tale of
obsessive love. Using flashbacks, he allowed the viewer to unravel
the mystery of the opening scene: a young woman who throws herself
off a building.
    Bresson also was interested in extreme, real-life situations.
``A Man Escaped,'' which won Bresson the best director award at the
1957 Cannes Film Festival, was based on the true story of a French
Resistance fighter who escaped from the Gestapo's Fort Montluc
prison in Lyon.
    Born on Sept. 25, 1901, in Bromont-Lamothe, the son of a
military officer, Bresson first studied to become a painter. He
made his first film in 1934, ``Affaires Publiques'' (Public
Affairs), based on three days in the life of an imaginary dictator.
    During World War II, Bresson spent a year in a German prisoner
of war camp. He returned home in 1943 to make ``Les Anges du
Peche'' (The Angels of Sin) and ``Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne''
(Ladies of the Bois de Boulogne) in 1945.
    Bresson was known as a quiet, solitary, even secretive man.
    Critics said the turning point of his career came in 1951 with
the film adaptation of the Georges Bernanos classic ``Journal d'un
Cure de Campagne'' (Diary of a Country Priest), the story of an
ailing priest who tries, unsuccessfully, to connect spiritually
with his parishioners.
    Bresson's final work, ``L'Argent'' (Money) was based on a short
story by Leo Tolstoy. It won the Grand Prix du Cinema de Creation
in Cannes in 1983. Comparing it to a Greek tragedy, critics said it
expressed Bresson's dismal vision of a society in which appearances
count more than values. The film also won a major New York film
critics' award in 1984.
    Bresson was married twice. Details on funeral arrangements and
survivors were not immediately clear.

new release catalogue that gives a little information
about the new Yma Sumac collection that's mentioned in

He must have been fairly active in the cartoon music biz.  I met a friend
of mine because she saw my website mention him...she was interested in him
for the music he wrote for some Dr. Seuss cartoon.  Not sure what cartoon,
though.

    SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- Stanley Meyer, executive producer
and a co-owner of the ``Dragnet'' television series, died Saturday
of heart failure. He was 85.
    The producer claimed that his health was weakened by the 1994
earthquake and lengthy litigation with his insurance company over
repairs to his home. In 1997, Superior Court jurors awarded $5.4
million to Meyer and his wife, Doris.
    In addition to his ``Dragnet'' TV production company Mark VII,
Meyer was chairman of Filmaster Ltd., which helped produce such
popular early series as ``Pete Kelly's Blues,'' ``Gunsmoke'' and
``Have Gun Will Travel.''

Right on, bruddah!  I am sorry the normally verbose and boisterous Ms. F has
been so silent, but I went back to Tampa for a spell(not a lot of rekkids,
but nice View Masters, including the KODAK HULA SHOW, and 6ts-7ts Worlds
Fair, also Playboy avec Serge and Jane!)...and this new job whicha keeps me
busy!  But as soon as I get a handle on it, and a home computer, I'll be

Subject: (exotica) A Great New 99 Christmas Album

Every now and then the people in the music business align just right to
produce a wonderful Christmas album.   Its been awhile for me but finally in
1999 along comes " El Christmas:  The World In Winter"    El records is
associated with the wonderful and mysterious Mike Alway who goes under
various names when making his music, ( ex: " Fantastic Everlasting
Gobstopper")

This album also includes contributions from Louis Phiilippe whose teamed up
with Mike Alway on other great collections on the Siesta label  and Momus.
These are three major leaders in the modern soft indie pop scene.

The album consists of 16 songs,  14 new compositions and marverlous remake of
"Goodnight"  It has, what I consider are some modern day  Christmas classics.
The style ranges from Beach Boy influenced, to girl group sound, to sunshine
pop (theres a remake of the Cowsills' Rain the Park and Other Things".   Its
a surprise to hear a 64 styled girl group song on here. Don't get me wrong
though its not produced like Phil Spector or written by the great Brill
Building writers.  One of the songs starts off with seagull sounds and I was
hoping for a Shadow Morton Shangrilas adventure but got a more Bananarama
sound

Theres a guitar sound on one of the songs straight from 65.   One of the
Louis Phillipe songs, "The Thirteenth Day Of Christmas"  is up to his high
standards and is extremely well written in a mid 60s style with his stamp all
over it.

The album is generally solid but there are some week and obnoxious cuts.
Generally it has a little more of a 60s stamp than Mike Alway and Louis
Philippe usually have.  However some of the songs really are classics.  One
song that desrves special mention is "Psychedlic Christmas" a late 60's style
romp that is sure to get airplay on college radio.

On a similiar vein comes a newly written Christmas cd single, "Lonely
Christmas" by Jonnny Diamond, (Easy Tune 1995)  produced by Arling & Cameron.
 This is a beautiful and sad Christmas song sung softly and beautifully by
Jonny Diamond, who I don't know anything about.

Also worth mentioning, though only a few songs would appeal to members of
these lists,   is a V/A compilation put together by L A DJ Rodney
Bingenheimer on Dionysus Records called " Santa's Got A GTO"  For me the best
song  is the Ramona's title cut.   A little modern punk on top of a great
60's melody.  Generally the album is power pop but the Wondermints turn in a
great version of "Ski Party"  (which I enjoyed watching on AMC last Sat
night).

Stooges (with Curley Joe I suspect.....) in the recording studio trying to =
cut a funny 12 Days of Christmas song.

The boys argue with each other and complain while a studio guy tries to =
get the sound effects just right.  The Stooges also have heavy Jewish =
"accents."

What the hell is this???  Anybody?

I have no idea what this is Nathan but in the same vein I would like to
mention a version of "White Christmas"  by Plunderphonics available on a
Johan da da Vis Christmas collection cd.  Its all slowed down/speeded up and
distorted and phased,  sometimes totally beyond recognition.  I wouldn't play
this song in the dark.

I highly recommend Johans Christmas cds.  They are fantastic!   A really wild
ride!

On a similiar note, Ron Grandia put together 2 Christmas cds to die for.
Really missed the new comps from both of them this year, but its great to
have these 4 cds to play this Christmas.

Happy Holidays to you all :)

I don't run across Bas Sheva records everyday (do YOU?!?!), but I did score
*something* today with her as the featured artist.  Just seeing her name in
silver letters on a purple Captiol label gave me goose bumps.

This is a 78, Bas-Sheva (they used a dash) with the Harold Mooney Orchestra
doing "Caravan" backed with "My Mother's Lullaby".  She sings and also moans
and groans like she does on "The Passions".

Any leads on more of her recordings?

It's a fan-feckkin'tastic comp CD called "Christmas Party with Eddie G"
Eddie was a writer for SNL...Maybe Lettermand too... dunno.. anyway he made
these crazy mix-tapes for a few years, and it blossomed into a real-live
comp complete with "tween" bits that he wrote and recorded with Billy West
(Voice of Stimpy and a bajillion other toons) West does a haunting Larry
Fine on this CD, and the voice of Moe and the low-self-esteem Curly Joe
Besser are not to believed!  A few VERY mean Jokes about dead stooges are
thrown in for good measure. (Just the name "Shemp" sends me into paroxysms
of glee.)

Music's TOPS, too. A must have. I'm sure you could search it on CDnow,
etc...
