3. WEIRD KIDS' ALBUM OF THE WEEK:
Ever since today's generation discovered the aural delights of Esquivel,
Les Baxter and other lounge music practitioners, musical archeologists have
ventured into ever darker corners looking for forgotten gems. So it was
only a matter of time before the fertile field of children's music became a
subject for further study. 'LISTEN COMPUTE ROCK HOME: THE BEST OF DIMENSION
5' (Emperor Norton), created by BRUCE HAACK, ESTHER NELSON and DIMENSION 5,
is a prime example of a late-'60s time capsule that, upon airing, renders
the jaw slack in mute amazement. The recordings here -- testament to an
innovative child-development program -- are low-budget DIY but as vivid as
a B-movie before the Hays Code, bursting with odd noises, silly voices and
overall weirdness, like some freeform multimedia art project of that era.
Some will hear the influence of drugs, no doubt, but what it really sounds
like is unbridled creativity without a hint of self-consciousness. The late
Haack, who had some renown as a electronic musician (he did an album for
Columbia in 1973 called 'The Electric Lucifer'), and Esther Nelson were
worthy co-conspirators, whether simulating a "Motorcycle Ride" in
easy-to-follow directions or warning of "Army Ants in Your Pants." This CD
may be too loopy for today's kids (the 2-year-old I lab-tested appeared not
to listen at all) but adults will find it fascinating, if occasionally
unsettling. (Melton)

Subject: (exotica) Looking for information
Hi everyone! I have a few queries...I'm new to this list, so if this pushes
the boundries of Exotica let me know.....
1. Does any one know who has the lowest singing voice in the world? J.D.
Sumner held this record for six years. Who is it now?
2. For my Canadian friends....Does anyone recall a 1974 7" called Fight On
Manitoba by Alden Diehl? It's like Eddie Lawrence's The Old Philosopher but
relates to 6 months of a Manitoba winter. (Your car won't start...The pipes
have burst....But FIGHT ON MANITOBA...FIGHT ON!)
3. Walt Pascoe...Wilma The Belgian Mare. The story of the world largest
horse who was saved from the dinner table and put on show for all the
kiddies to enjoy. Any background information that's not on the record
jacket?
4. Weight Control by Audio Therapy. A Lions Club Fund Raising Activity.
Subliminal suggestions as every pause in the narraration is taken out so the
listener can enjoy the record at 500 words a minute. Of course, backed by
lush strings. Who is the Better Life Institute?
5. Superman and the Mystery of the Mad Minnows. Anyone know the voices
behind this Power records release?
Thanks,
Brian

Welcome to the list!
Having spent many frigid winters in Manitoba, yes, I remember that
"song" well - it was played pretty regularly on Don Percy's morning show
(it's been awhile - I can't remember the station). It was quite
amusing, although it tended to get a little monotonous after many
repeated listenings!

Subject: (exotica) annoying music cd
There's a show on Chicago's public radio station called "The Annoying Music Show" (which sounds like a knockoff of Irwin Chusid's old "Atrocious Music show".)
They are selling a CD. From the show's website:
The Annoying Music Show! CD. To order call 888.590.OUCH.
Has anyone heard this CD, know what's on it, or can recommend for/against it??

Our motto: Celebrating the life, not morbidly dwelling on death.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Rex Allen Sr., a singer and actor in
Westerns who also served as the voice on Walt Disney films and TV
shows, died from injuries suffered when he accidentally was run
over by a car. He was 78.
Police believe his caretaker did not realize Allen was behind
the car when she began to back it up, police spokeswoman Judy
Altieri said. Detectives were attempting to determine whether Allen
had fallen before he was hit.
Allen, who grew up on an Arizona ranch, starred in several
western movies, including a 1949 film called ``The Arizona
Cowboy,'' and in a television series called ``Frontier Doctor.''
His signature stallion for the western movies, Koko the Wonder
Horse, was added in his second film, ``The Hills of Oklahoma.''
Among his narration credits are more than 80 Walt Disney films
and the animated classic, ``Charlotte's Web.''
He got into music before reaching his teens, playing guitar and
singing with his fiddle-playing father at dances.
His professional break came in the 1940s when country star Roy
Acuff heard him with a band in Quakertown, Pa.
Though the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville hired Eddy Arnold instead
and Arnold went on to fame, Allen joined with the National Barn
Dance on WLS in Chicago and subsequently was signed by Mercury
Records. His hits included ``Streets of Laredo'' and ``Crying in
the Chapel.''
Allen, who would have turned 79 on New Year's Eve, moved to
