I have the same problems especially with these polydor Comps, I'm still
looking for records by Augusto Alguerro, who always has these blinding
tracks on the compilations, but I've never seen his LPs at all. Are they
German?

Stereo 99 is indeed a Polydor compilation -- now you have to look out
for volumes 2 & 3 as well. These (and other) Polydor comps always whet
my appetite for albums which I've never found: has anyone out there
ever found/seen copies of albums by "Certain Lions and Tigers" or
"Xylos Inc."?

Found three of these albums over the weekend - superb packaging with =
*very* heavy cardboard sleeves and a cut-out portion where the inner =
jacket shows through (a bright, vibrant abstract color pattern). One I =
know is Henre Rene with some damn fun cuts on it.
How many of these were released?

19 in all, including a sampler LP, from early 1961 to mid-1962.
Here's the list, in order of appearance:
Dynamica - Ray Martin
It's Magic - Marty Gold
Runnin' Wild - Dick Schory
The Music Goes 'Round
Sounds Terrific! - Ted Textor (orchestra and chorus)
Crazy Rhythm - Guitars Unlimited + 7
Futura - Bernie Green
Stereo Action Goes Hollywood - Marty Gold
Stereo Action Goes Broadway - Dick Schory
Paradise Regained - Leo Addeo
Excitement, Incorporated - Ray Martin
Sounds Sensational! - Keith Texor
More Double Exposure - Manny Albam
Dynamic Dimensions - Henri Rene
Stereo Action Unlimited - various artists
Latin-Esque - Esquivel
Holiday for Percussion - Dick Schory
I Had the Craziest Dream - Manny Albam
Movin' & Groovin' - Three Suns
As I understand it, there was also a proposed 20th in the series,
Percussion Playful and Pretty by Bobby Rosengarden and Phil
Kraus but for some reason it wasn't released under the Stereo
Action banner. Came out instead on the RCA Record Club.

interesting Leven titles:
"Christmas on the Isthmus"
"I Used to Live Here, Kid"
"Shoulder Queerness"

"The Okey Pokey Band and Singers are featured on this album of Groovy Hits
for Dancing. One one recording Okey has grouped the top dance hits of
today, the sounds turned-on psychedelic pop-rock proponents dig most.
These are the sounds that rock New York City's fashonable discotheques,
London's mod-spots and the Love Generation's favourite playground Fillmore
Auditorium in San Francisco.
This recording can transform your own "rock 'n wreck" room into a dazzling
mini dance palace. Grooving there to its boss rhythms you and your party
playmates can experience the same out-of-sight thrills as swingers in the
world's good-time capitals. As zany as the Monkees, as wildly experimental
as any San Francisco fluid-sound group, the Okey Pokey Band and Singers
will make it happen.
This is the second Okey Pokey Band and Singers' record to be released on
Arc. The group's first Flower Power highlighting the Love Generation's
favourite music is regarded by many as the definitive album produced in
that field to date. Groovy Hits for Dancing focuses on the many rhythms of
rock n roll, the beats and changes that take you where you've never been
before. If you dance you'll dig".

my thoughts about the second (and third) Friends of Dean Martinez cd's:
_Retrograde_:
This CD hasn't left my player for a couple of weeks, I love it! Friends of
Dean Martinez have a very original, relaxed, melancholic and warm guitar
based sound, but it ain't no typical Brit instro, and certainly not surf
either. They sound a bit more exotic than their previous one ("Shadow of
your smile") thanks to some vibes and gentle conga work, and also more
varied, with the addition of organ, sax, harmonica and accordion here and
there. They sound a bit like Santo & Johnny with a fistful of fuzzy and
distorted electric guitars, and a pinch of feedback. Other references that
came to my mind while listening where: The Triffids without vocals, Twin
Peaks (the dreamy atmosphere), Neil Youngs guitar work on a late warm night
in a tiki lounge... grungy lounge? Only 1 track sounded a bit out of place
here: the uptempo R&B based "Monte Carlo"; I would have given it a cocktail
jazz treatment instead. But a couple of other slightly Latin rhythms fit in
percectly! Highly recommended late night "grounge" listening pleasure!
_Atardecer_: More EZ grunge instro beauty!

Subject: (exotica) Autumn Leaves
I was thinking of doing an "Autumn Leaves" program on my radio show on
September 24th, the first full day of Autumn. Got the idea from reading
the article on Frank Turek's (Recliner's) program on the Internet.
Where it mentioned Frank did 25 versions of the song once. Bravo Frank!
So, to paraphrase Dave Barry: "Has the 25 song Autumn Leaves barrier ever
been broken?" It?s time to go for a new record! ;') I?m new at this and
may not have the stamina, or the rekkids, to even get to 25 versions. But
I?m willing to give it a try. I need about 45 versions to fill a whole 3
hour show. If I go that route. Yikes!
Gone through my LP's and found about 12 versions, by the time I go through
the CD?s (Esquivel, Nat King Cole, Karrin Allison come to mind) I may have
another 10. So the Recliner's record may stand. But still have some time
to find more versions. Definately have to pick up the Roger Williams
Greatest Hits LP. My Mom played that cassette to death when I was a kid.
If anyone has an "Autumn Leaves" compilation already made on tape or CD let
me know?
I'll post a playlist after I do the show. If I'm still coherent. ;')
And if you want to know more about the song check out the Space Age Pop

Awe shucks, Ma'am :^) It's on what is generally considered to be his finest
album, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. As good as Autumn Leaves is,
though, the peak of peaks is their version of "Lush Life", a classic,
drinks down.
To show that gold is where you find it, I was introduced to Hartman's
recordings by a fellow named Reuben Radding, who played in a band called
Dain Bramage, which featured Dave Grohl, who later joined Nirvana and the
Foo Fighters. Reuben and I worked at Tower Records in Washington, DC.
Johnny Hartman. Sigh.,

By "reissue", I take it they mean "boot"...but that's
ok...Tell me, oh space cadets, is this primo? Darrell
Brogdon has already THOROUGHLY depressed me that the
Leith Stevens outerspaceexotica is nearly dang
impossible to find under $200....but ol' Jack Diamond
had talked about a reissue of that...All I can say is,
if it isn't gonna be re-released, then get those CDrs
rollin' for me, will y'all?

I just got my copy of this from the Dusty Groovers yesterday
(listening to it right now, in fact) and I have to say it sounds
FANTASTIC! I'm no audiophile, but the vinyl is nice and heavy and
the pressing--at least on my copy--is first rate. Love that electro-
theremin! And, yes, it's clearly a bootleg.

Subject: (exotica) more Siesta and Euro stuff
More goodies from Siesta: a 3rd Free Design compilation (fab covers of
"Happy Together" and "A Man and a Woman" among others) and a follow-up to
Algebra Spaghetti in their "Reverie" imprint of music for children. Totally
great stuff, and of course the artwork is superior, as usual with Siesta
releases.
Also got a catalogue from a German label called Trikont. They're all over
the map and the brochure is in German, which I don't speak, but I did notice
2 or 3 volumes of versions of "La Paloma", something called "Vietnam Roady
Music 2000" as well as something by Isar 12, already spotted on some
Bungalow comp. Could anybody fill me in on Trikont? Are the compilations of
German material titled Zur Holle Mama--Perlen deutschsprachiger Popmusik
worth getting?
Live notes:
Louis Philippe (who produces most of the Reverie stuff and is a wondrous
solo artist) will make his New York debut on a bill with Momus and Kahimi
Karie in September.
Awesome garage band the Monks are doing their *first ever* US show on
November 5 and 7 in New York!!! And reuniting after 32 years in the
process!!!

Hmm. Maybe we have different copies but I have the CD and the vinyl and on
both copies, they do "Autumn Serenade", not "Leaves"... unless it's the
same song.
And anyway, the classic on that record is "My one and only love".
(Good enough even to obliterate memories of Sting croaking it out on TV once.)
I have two more of those Impulse compilations, with almost thirty tunes
between them and unfortunately none of them have leaves in them either.
And then there's this reissue of one of his "lost" albums, "And I thought
about you". Again, no leaves. (And at this point, we're well over forty
tunes with that lovely deep dark voice.)
And finally I have this sort of sad, almost exotic record he made in 1972 -
"Today" - where he covered "By the time I get to Phoenix", "Games people
play", "Betcha by golly wow" (!) and "Help me make it through the night".
On that one, the closest he comes to "Autumn Leaves" is "Summer Wind".
The record isn't a total failure but you have to wonder if he'd have made
it if he had received anything near his proper due as a singer.
It's sort of cool to hear his sing "betcha by golly wow".
I've read some explanations of why he never made it. I'm sure it had
something to do with race although Nat King Cole would seem to put that
into question.
But for me he was the best crooner ever. Hands down.
(Have you seen the infomercial for that classical CD "The Most Relaxing
Classical Record in the World... Ever"? I love the way the way the guy
pauses before he says "ever".)

You will find lots of French versions of this song as it is of French origin.
The version we are familiar with is an English translation. By the way on of
the most emotional lump-in-your-throat versions is the Irresistible Force's
remix of the version by Coldcut (this has just recently been reissued on a
limited 12").

I'm obsessed with knowing what celebs are still alive, so thanks for this
list, Lou.
I still remember almost dying of shock when, in the middle of Warren Beatty's
Dick Tracy (1990), character actor Ian Wolfe, who played old, old men in
the 1940s, turned
up briefly.
I guess the biggest surprise is Frank Cady.
