"Rosie Jacuzzi, the oldest member of the Jacuzzi family and a 1906 earthquake

Now there's a low-concept tv-movie-of-the-week biopic idea.

I don't know the name of it, but the origin of it was that the fellow who
composed it wrote and submitted in raw form, saying that the lyrics should
sound something like what he sang. They liked the song the way it was, so
the lyrics are complete nonsense. A partial transcription:
"Wet too a ponny, bossa fell a hen,
A sibba wonna sib, got a filler ron a sit, uh huh."
And so forth.
From http://www.tir.com/~rtw/inside.htm
What Are They Saying?" Ever wonder what the words are to the closing theme
of WKRP? Before you get excited about finding those long lost lyrics, the
actual answer is -- there are none! Tom Chehak, a first season
writer/producer who was present at the Atlanta recording session of the
theme, recalls how Tom Welles, theme writer, suggested to Chehak and Hugh
Wilson a closing theme for the song. According to Chehak, the singer just
started blarring out a bunch of nonsense words; if any of them were actual
words, they're lost to history. Indeed, Chehak recalls how great they all
thought it would be to leave fans guessing forever -- looks like they got
their wish.

I guess I'm too quick on the draw, but I deleted Jeff
Phillips response to "Why doesn't the Boston Pops do
an Exotica performance" ...He said that
then-and-now-conductor Keith Lockhart balked at
Esquivel charts ever being performed in Boston! I
guess even Keith knows how square this city is.
Anyway, refresh me, but were there not some
zany-by-Pops standards performances in the 7ts with
MOOGS and perhaps Theremins under the batons of
John(ny) Williams or Arthur "Saturday Night" Feidler,
or do I just wax wishfully?

I can truly relate to this myself! I find a lot of those experimental
oddities like Culturcide not getting the playing they deserve here and
it's totally our own doing, both of us being so caught up in the EZ
craze. Still, their version of "White Christmas" is a bit softer and
may appeal to more list members. It's called "Depressed Christmas",
and aside from showing a cover with a guy slashing his wrists, the
song goes ...I'm having a depressed Christmas, just like the one I
had last year... We still try to include these kind of things from
time to time in Space Bop as part of our station's mandate is to play
non-mainstream music and we can't disappoint! Now if we could only
find a bit more Canadian content we'd be set...

I personally would NOT say in any way "amateurish" or "blase," but
definitely REALLY laid-back, informal, and, well, *earnest*.
>Do any list members know of other bands I could check out
>that have a similar style or approach? I want more stuff like this.
I too really liked this first FODM album, but I deeply and passionately
*LOVED* Calexico, and obtaining their CDs may be more important than your
next breath.
I still haven't picked up the second FODM, which I've been told from a
couple of sources, is not as interesting, with conjecture that when John
Burns & John Convertino split FODM to form Calexico, they took its spark
with them.
The first Calexico album, _Spoke_, I described to a friend (who agreed
with my description) as something like the dreams you might have falling
asleep to Friends' _Shadow of Your Smile_. Much more ethnic and eclectic
than SoYS, with even more of a wandering-the-desert-on-a-motorcycle sort
of vibe. Songs with Morricone-esque guitars, accordions, and vibes drift
in and out of eerie ambient sound field recordings with a fab, raw,
ultra-lo-fi surf number poking up midway. Slurred and dreamy, restless,
distinctive, visionary, haunting, and moving... particularly with some of
its poetic vocal numbers. Yow, I *love* that album.
I bought the album in its original form on German vinyl from the band
(when I saw them as part of Victoria Williams' 7-piece backing ensemble
in Ann Arbor in early 1998 -- side note: Vic's stuff has evolved from the
delightfully bizarre avant folk swamp rock of her first Rough Trade album
to an almost-easy-listening approach complete with more orchestral and
percussive arrangements and quirky covers of standards. Her 1998 cover of
Eden Ahbez's "Nature Boy," particularly with the Calexico & co. exotic
percussion backing, definitely rates as "Exotica" in my book. She's hard
to peg, which is so much of why I *love* Victoria...).
The gatefold LP doesn't even have the band name "Calexico" on it
anywhere, making me wonder if they were first going under the name
"Spoke." I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the original intent was
to ONLY release this album on 12" vinyl, but it since came out
domestically in the US on CD.
After it became probably my favorite album of 1998, I proceeded to also
purchase the CD, so I loved it enough to buy it twice (mighty nice
packaging on both formats, BTW). But, if you recall, I haven't yet taken
the plunge on the second FODM on SubPop, so you can see where my
priorities are.
There's a follow-up that came out about a year ago called _The Black
Light_, which is also fabulous, and has grown on me to the point where
it's about equal with _Spoke_ in its musical appeal. Somewhat of a more
Duane Eddy meets up with a Mariachi band in the desert kind of vibe in
places, and a track called "Fake Fur" that most folks on this here
Exotica list should find cuddly. One friend prefers its slightly more
tangy twang to the first album, but they're pretty consistent in overall
tone and both equally endorsed.
Somewhat of a narrative concept album, I don't think I've yet really
plumbed The Black Light's depths -- it still hasn't gripped me from a
conceptual/content aspect as much as _Spoke_ moved me, but it still
might. (Both albums available domestically on Quarterstick Records)
The newness is wearing in
I check my eyes to see if they have spokes
To see if they are moving
To see if they have spoke
To see if there is somewhere else to ride...
Could not possibly yield a higher recommendation from this guy,

Not a lot of turnups recently but this weekend I found:
Supercharged - Paddy Kingsland (Studio 2). This is one of the most dreary
moog (VCS3 actually) records I now own (possibly apart from Ye Old Moog),
saved only by The Earthmen (featured on the first Sound Gallery
compilation) which is a superb track.
Berry Lipman - With Love from Germany. A horrible, mushy, sickly lp with
every track suffering from an incessant swinging rhythm that makes me want
to vomit. I am still desperately looking for 'The Most Beautiful Girls in
the World' by Mr Lipman though, as well as a couple of his library lps so
if anyone has any leads.....
Thats all for now.

Funny, I always kinda liked these lyrics. I have about 4 or 5 recordings of
versions with lyrics.
The Trilogy series puts one vocal version on each disc.
My question is if old Les actually penned these lyrics.

Astroslut will be formed on planet earth in the late

colonization through
pure, unadulterated sex, unsullied by such quaint

monogamy. By the late 23rd Century it will become
apparent that
humans, in

sexual
frustration: Three centuries of war, aggression and

grab up all the galaxy's choice real estate. By the
time earth's
atmosphere is depleted and humans' need for
colonization grows
desperate,
the other races of the universe will be all to happy
to let the
bellicose
inhabitants of earth perish and to use the rubble of
their legacy for

held down and hassled by the Intergalactic Man.
Astroslut's Millennium mission is to spread their

No, unfortunately you're not. We went all through this a year or so ago
talking about "Now Sound versus plain old instrumental rock" and similar
subjects.
Actually I'm in the process of getting rid of almost all my early "Teen
Beat" and "Let there be drums" Sandy Nelson records since those records
kind of bore me and I don't want to be a Sandy collector.
The Sandy records I lurve are the later "quasi-psychedelic" ones with the
sixties rock covers and the far lower proportion of endless drum "solos".
My faves: The Beat Goes On, Groovy, Cheetah Beat, "In" Beat, Rebirth of
the Beat and best of all Superdrums!
It's strange to be selling Sandy records but I'm up to 300 rejects and I'm
pretty proud of myself. I'm trying to get rid of anything that I have just
because it relates to something else I genuinely love.
I'm even getting rid of a couple of Buddy Merrill records which only
recently were such a thrill to find. But you gotta be ruthless.

Nice to see such an enthusiastic Calexico review here. I'm still kicking
myself that I passed up seeing them live here recently. Too old, too blase
I guess.
But I too love their CD's, though like Mr.Toth, the second one hasn't quite
sunk in yet.
I did buy the second Friends of Dean Martinez record. I liked it the first
time I heard it and less and less with each subsequent play. All I can say
is that it's slicker than the first one and a bit more standard.
As far as where you can get more stuff like the first Friends record, I
don't think you can. Or at least not all in one place.
I have quite a few of those guitar instrumental quasi surf lounge CD's that
seemed to explode out of nowhere in the last few years and there are
occasional pleasures there, occasionally even resembling the pleasure of
that first Friends CD.
But nothing quite as laid back and loungey.
You could try The Henrys, a great local band whose leader plays a lap
Hawaiian guitar, sort of like a dobro. I've seen their CD's reviewed in
American magazines so I assume you can find them. (If you're really
interested and you can't find anything, I can probably hook you up.)
Any Mary Margaret O'Hara fans out there should also have the Henry's CD's
because she appears on guest vocals.
Then there are moments on one of the Aqua Velvas CD's.
And I have this one pretty obscure CD called "Slim Westerns" by "a small
good thing" which is sort of like a quasi-Morricone tribute soundtrack to a
western film that was never made.
So I know that there's stuff like this out there.
And you could try the first OP8 CD - if you haven't already - which is
obviously related to all this, being yet another Giant Sand/Calexico spinoff.
Then there's Tuatara. I think the second one is better than the first.
Again, it's not exactly "like" the first Friends CD but if you like one,
you might like the other.
And while I'm at it, if you've ever been interested in Tortoise but you
couldn't get into their first two CD's, try "TNT", their third or fourth
which is easily the most "accessible". (I like them all myself but...)
Yes I do have CD's. I just don't have time to bond with them because I'm
too busy trying to decide which of my 16 Lenny Dee LP's I can live without.
The problem is that the old ones have amazing covers and the "new" ones
have really surprising arrangements.

<< Denny McLain >>
Good chance not everyone on this list knows who Denny McLain is.
He was a 1968 Cy Young award winning pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and the
last player to win 30 games in a season.
He also made at least one record, "Denny McLain At The Organ" (Capitol ST
2881), playing a Hammond X-77. Titles include:
The Look Of Love
Hurdy Gurdy Man
This Guys In Love With You
Cherish
Watch What Happens
Great cover photo of Denny on the mound in his Tigers uniform.
I think he is in jail now, got mixed up with John Gotti.
I'm fixin' Shakehip (Ed) with a CD-R of this, so if there any of you
interested in a generous slice of cheese, let me know off list. My CD-R's
include a tray liner with complete LP details and indexed track list along
with full color jewel case insert of the record(s) cover.

Has a really wild and funny version of Hawaiian War Chant but it is short
(about 2 min or less)
otherwise it is mostly dislogue from the show which is interesting but not

Subject: (exotica) week off
Been off work for a week, did a 5 hour stint DJing at a fashion show (40
degrees at earls Court) which I'll write about later. Also found a couple
of interesting things in charity shops.
SAMPLE MANCINI
what a great record, well side one is anyway. It seems to be a sort of
compilation. Starts off with a latin version of The Magnificent 7 (from
'Mancini in Latin' I think), then Senor Peter Gunn (no source record for
this, but its a real corker, nice organ in the middle - you know I'm gonna
love it). Then side 1 rounds off with a great version of 'House of the
Rising Sun' from Mancini 67. side 2 is pretty good, but those 3 tracks are
just real winners. The 'Mancini 67' LP looks well worth buying if you see
it.
The other thing I got was
STEREO 99
another compilation, mixed stuff. On the label 'Ninety Nine', which I
think is the label I have my Buffalo Springfield LP on, although the tracks
come from (German?) polydor releases it looks like. Mostly the usual
suspects, Roberto Delgado etc. 2 *gag* James Last tracks I liked, 'O
Manguero (the Bandit)' and 'Happy Music'. That was a shock. A pretty good
John Scott version of 'Delilah', I've not come across him before. I
actually got it as it has a Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra track on it,
'Those were the days'. Not my favourite song, but a pleasingly interesting
arrangement.
That was about it. I was up in East Dulwich for a while, which was one of
my favourite spots for charity shops, but half of them had closed down,
and those that were open had either recent trance 12's or poor 80s pop.
very disappointing.
also new URL if anyone is interested (same old stuff though).

My cousin "ghost wrote" his autobiography and later was pissed at him becasue
McLain lied to him about all the Las Vegas "problems".
I think he should of seen it coming.

Stereo 99 is indeed a Polydor compilation -- now you have to look out
for volumes 2 & 3 as well. These (and other) Polydor comps always whet
my appetite for albums which I've never found: has anyone out there
ever found/seen copies of albums by "Certain Lions and Tigers" or
"Xylos Inc."?

I listened to this CD and, even liking the TV show, did not like the CD.
It is really not Tiki at all!

Subject: (exotica) Fashion Show
The temptation is to try and make this another epic tale, but my writing
skills just aren't up to it I'm afraid.
Anyway I was asked by the organisers to provide music in the central bar
for 5 hours Sunday afternoon, 1 - 6pm. The show was 40 degrees, and is a
'streetwear' show, where designers, manufacturers etc set up and buyers
for retailers come down to look, make contacts and place orders. Its a
trade fair rather than a catwalk thing. 'It's very URBAN, ...FUNKY. The
organisers said. They had skateboarders from all over the world on this big
half pipe, that sort of thing.
Fine. They promised silly money, which was even finer, but this was soon
scaled down, but it was still fine. Although I haven't been paid yet. So,
I packed up enough records (I hoped) for 5 hours and with a friend who was
doing an hour and a half after me on Sunday and then again Monday, set off
for the London.
We got up there early, found the bar. I was expecting it to be enclosed.
What it was, was a space for about 8 stands (say 30 Yards square) cleared in
the middle of the floor, with a few chairs. Totally open to the hall, but
split down the middle with 2 bars back to back. Next thing we noticed was
the stand with Drum and Bass blasting out from about 2 stalls away (they had
Goldie there on the Monday fortunately I wasn't up against him). Then, no
booth for us. The decks were set up on the counter behind the bar, so that
I had to stand with my back to the seating area, looking through a little
hatch to another bit of the bar on the other side. No monitors either so
all you could hear was the wash of bass coming out of the speakers, the
walls were way too far away for echoes.
As soon as I started playing the other thing about that bass you noticed was
the rumbling feedback. Not too bad at first, but after about 3pm the DnB
stall starting really kicking in. The Bass snaked out through the floor,
up through the bar into the decks, out of my speakers and fed right back in
again. Great. Every Bass note from there just went round my system
endlessly. All I could do was turn the bass right down and float stuff out
over the top, fortunately I had some sitar bits that did very nicely, as
did the more laid back exotic stuff, Denny and Baxter.
Then one of the bar staff (we'd been bumping backs and getting in each
others way all afternoon) spilt a skip of ice and water all over the bar
floor. Just what you need with amps and wires and records all over the
place.
I think it went well in spite of it being far more stressful than it should
have. I started off with Euro go-go stuff, Peter Thomas, Vampyros Lesbos,
Gert Wilden etc, down through Brasilian Samba to some jazzier bits for
about 3 when I had the bass problems, so it was off into Ananda Shanka and
Exotica, then they unplugged the DnB PA as it was pissing too many people
off, so then I could come back up through some Lounge stuff (Frank, Dino
etc) into Now Sounds and finished off with Funkier tunes along the lines off
the Incredible Bongo Band and Hells Belles. Quite a musical journey. I
must have played over 150 of the 200 records I took. I think they liked it.
My friend played some disco tunes afterwards and on the Monday, and we've
been asked back for February.
Not much feedback from bar users (one person asked about Tom Jones 'Witch
Queen', but that was it). But its funny the people you know who it turns
out make latex underwear.
And they forgot to give me any food.
