I like Doob Doob A Rama, though others on the exotica list found it wanting.
Some of the more rocking cuts from Bollywood musicals including the famed
"Jaan Pechan Ho." Sound quality is a bit muddy (one expects less than the
master tapes were available), but the songs are all catchy, often featuring
twangy rock guitar.

I don't think this has something to do with the master tapes. Most of the
Bollywood soundtracks I know have this sound quality. I've also seen some of
these movies on Arabian tv channel MBC (broadcasting from London I believe) and
they suffer from the same problem. Some movies from the 90s look and sound like
they were made in the early 70s. Of course this all adds to the charm of this
genre!

Actually I was less distressed by the remake itself than I was by the idea
that Rene Russo is this year's Faye Dunaway.

At the time this song was foisted upon the world, I couldn't have agreed
more. And yet now, when I hear it sung by Jack Jones or Mel Torme (or even
Ed Ames??) I actually like it. And not just that. I actually understand
the lyrics.
In fact, it was my change-of-mind over this exact song that made me realize
that my taste had irrevocably changed and it was time to stop pretending
that the shelf full of crooners was just some anomaly.
It's a crappy song and I love it. I don't know what to do about it.
But if I start liking "The night Chicago died", I'll switch to hip hop
immediately.

There seems to be a period of re-making great films at the moment: they've
just completed the Italian Job I believe, Get Carter's in the pipeline, The
Mummy, that scene-by-scene Psycho remake, Godzilla...
It's enough to keep anyone away from the cinema...

My first language wasn't English, still most of the music I heard in my life
had English lyrics. I often thought, I had missed something by not having
understood the lyrics of songs when I was young. And to a certain extent that's
even true. On the other hand I consider myself being lucky, because I could
appreciate so much music I wouldn't have been able to, if I HAD understood the
lyrics. I guess that's true for much music of the "hippie"/psychedelic era, and
I think "Windmills" is a good example. Another one is a former US number 1
charts hit: "Just Dropped In" by Kenny Rodgers & the First Edition. I think
it's a hell of a psychedlic Pop-song, but when I listened to the lyrics
consciously for the first time some 5 years ago, it sounded so embarrassing! ("
...I found my mind in a brown paper bag wrapped in...") Or think of "San
Franciscan Nights": "Strobe lights beam, create streams. Walls move, minds do
too..." Ui ui ui... God, was I lucky to NOT understand so many lyrics!

That explains why the sound on Dance Rajah Dance is so stinky. Really a
shame, cuz this is a fine CD mixing synthes, guitars, sitars, violins
electro percussion and tablas, and some amazing vocals. It's also South
Indian Bollywood music, so it's is off-center. Think of Yellow Magic
Orchestra colliding with Ravi Shankar with vocals by the Plastics -- and
everyone's on on dexedrine while playing early video games. With
bluegrass hoedown/Brazilian flavors tossed in for fun. Masala! All tunes
hits written by Vinjaya Anand, whose name, the sleeve notes say, means
"victory" and "ecstasy." Weird, I didn't hear the mud in the store
listening station; not til I got it home and cranked loud did the mud
emerge. I suppose you could say it just makes the music all the more
psychedelic.
Could there also be tech problems in the CD itself, akin to a bad pressing
of a record? Sometimes the vocals sound like the singer got a bit too cozy
with the mic.

No, there's no such thing as a bad pressing in CDs. Sometimes they skip or
hang, but the sound quality is digital and should be exactely as it was
recorded. Only in the process of digitizing the sound could have suffered. But
that's prior to the pressing.
Burnt my first five CDs the other day. Fun! Designed and printed booklets for
them and now they look like real CDs! Actually I have the impression the sound
changed a bit, I hear less basses. Did anybody have similar experiences?

If you think Dance Raja Dance has poor sound quality you'd be amazed to know
that it stands out as one of the clearest sounding Hindi Film recording that
I've heard...
This is one reason why I don't think it's as powerful as similar recordings.
I think that if the exotica, etc. stuff that we like was recorded with today
audio techniques that I would not be interested.
I wish that sound techs would dig their head out of their collective butts and
realize that "clarity" is a subjective term.
My mind is reeling right now of all the tangential rants I could lance into
right now and I'm stifled by the possibilities. Perhaps someone could pick up
this thread, I'd contribute from there.

Hmm, it's a tricky one, since there's really two issues involved. (I'm making
this up as I go along, btw) One is the production quality and one is the
mastering/pressing/copying quality. By production quality I mean the way
something is produced - the number of channels, microphone placement and all
that sort of stuff, while the other refers to actually getting the sound that
was recorded to the consumer intact.
While, and I'm sure I'm not alone here, I often prefer a relatively 'rough'
production, the sort of one-take 60s soul sound, it needs to reach me in a
relatively unaltered state. There's nothing worse than listening to a muffled
tape someone's made or a badly mastered record. So while I love the cardboard
box drums and tinny guitar I want to be able to hear them clearly in all their
'badly' recorded glory with the only colouration the vinyl crackle...
I don't think this made sense, but I knew what I meant when I started...

I usually just lurk on this list, but I had some pretty good luck today. I
finally got hold of Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, mint condition with the

picked up the following:
The Magic Islands Revisited - Axel Stordahl, Pick a Bale of Cotton - Brownie
McGhee and Sonny Terry, a 10" by Leadbelly called Rock Island Line, Nine
Simone - Simone At Town Hall, Pearl Bailey and Sylvia Lynn, The Wonderful
World of the Brothers Grimm - David Rose, Night Beat - Tito Puente (great
cover), Cha Cha Cha - Pepe Luis, High Fi-esta - Edmundo Ros, ...with your in
mind - Marian McPartland, Go Go Go - Alan Freed's TV Record Hop, Lita Roza
(Can anyone tell me about her?) and an interesting sampler (Actually,I got
about 4 samplers) but this one has a song called Gee, Baby by Donna Hightower
that LOOKS interesting (they show the album covers) and I'm wondering if
anyone has any info on her. Jeri Southern is also on this sampler, Dean
Martin, Stan Kenton, Nat Cole, Ernie Ford and the Jordanaires, a pretty good
sampler from November, 1959.
Sorry to be so longwinded, but I always enjoy reading about other's finds
that I thought I'd share mine. Thanks for the space.

A&E is rerunning their 4 part Rat Pack "Biography" Monday to Thursday,
8:00pm and midnight (eastern). With a Sammy solo edition on Friday night.
Peter Sellers stars in "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas" (1968) tomorrow
(Sunday) night at 8:00 on TCM. I seem to recall a generous helping of Now
Sound in the soundtrack. Double-billed with "Dr. Strangelove" (1963) at 10:00.
For the soft pops out there, a "Profile" of The Mamas And The Papas on
Bravo, Monday afternoon at 3:00pm.
Not very relevant, but what the hell... on Thursday morning, TCM has
"Freaks" (1932) at 6:00am and "Mark Of The Vampire" (1935) at 7:30am. The
latter has my favorite ending of any vampire movie.

Elakelaiset may resemble Culturcide in its approach - they both
"steal" and mutulate hits - but the resulting sound differs a lot.
Elakelaiset plays hilarious turbo-humppa. Culturcide is much more
aggressive and harsh than Elakelaiset: they play back a record of a hit,
and overdub it with layers of grungy guitar and out-of-tune new lyrics,
more shouting than singing. I used to like Culturcide, I found their thing
even funny, but now, after listening so much to EZ etc, I can't bear
Culturcide's loud guitar "noise" anymore ;-) this is not meant to attack
them! I'm sure there are plenty of folks on this list who like them...

Well, Tiki Bob, I listened to this record for the first time last night and
loved it. Extra added sound effects: My parakeet and cockatiel LOVED all of

Everything you got sounds terrif!
The record buying scene in Portland seems to have dried up. Django's no
longer
has much vinyl and they got rid of their 20 cents records (many of which they
had outside the store marked as "FREE"). The records I see at the Goodwill
As-Is store don't fill up the bins anymore and are usually not very good.
Makes me wonder whether all the good stuff is being snapped up and they put
on ebay or something...because I haven't seen it anywhere lately.
Which is okay, because I need to get my present collection in order and
properly take care of it. I had to dump a bunch of record albums yesterday
because they were improperly stored and mold/mildew ruined them. I didn't
have anything I really cared about but it is upsetting just the same. Each
record had something I liked and wanted to keep...just not something I
needed to have in front of me all the time.

somewhat amateurish and perhaps blase sound that I find really
appealing. Do any list members know of other bands I could check out

apparently the Florida Disneyworld has a machine where you can make your own
CD and select from the theme songs from several rides including the Tiki Room
Unfortunately it is only the actual theme songs and not the extended music
included on the 12" versions

There's reference in print to at least two spoken word LPs by
stripper/actress/personality, Liz Renay. One is her own poetry, the other
is the Greek play "Lysistra" (spl?). Anyone have/heard/etc either of these?
Reports? Thanks!

Before leaving the BSO in 1996, I gave a copy of the SABPM Esquivel CD
to Keith Lockhart, who had just recently been hired as Pops conductor.=20
He said, "that is some wild, wild stuff!" I asked if he thought the
Pops would ever be interested in recreating some of it, and he replied,
"in Boston?! Are you out of your mind?"
It seems that the Pops *have* been capitalizing on the swing craze of
late, though.... I suppose there's always a chance!
EZ does it,

This has been discussed, but the computer also exists in Disneyland, CA and
you can select several tracks from the Tiki Room, although not the dialogue
bits from the LP. However, for the first time, you can select the dialogue of
the tikis that goes on BEFORE the show OUTSIDE of the tiki room. Which is
actually pretty darn cool. And I speak as someone who
1) Owns the Enchanted Tiki Room LP in excellent condition (bought for a
dollar) and
2) Made the CD in Disneyland with this dialogue.

Alfons Bach
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- Industrial designer,
architect and artist Alfons Bach, who helped create one the Nation's
first shopping malls, died Thursday. He was 95.
Born in Magdeburg, Germany, Bach studied architecture
in Berlin and opened a design firm in New York City in 1928.
During a career that spanned seven decades,

the Industrial Design Society of America.
``His biggest impact is he had hung in there
the longest,'' said Carroll Gantz, a retired industrial designer

was one of the first generation designers and that makes him
unusual.''

Heywood Wakefield, carpet manufacturer Bigelow-Sanford, General

Girves, son of a Greek immigrant, was also

Rosie Jacuzzi
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (AP) -- Rosie Jacuzzi,
the oldest member of the Jacuzzi family and a 1906 earthquake
survivor, died Aug. 4. She was 95.
Rosie Jacuzzi, whose family invented the Jacuzzi
whirlpool, was born in Cuneo, Italy and emigrated to America
at age 3, but left shortly after her mother and brother died
in the earthquake. She returned at age 11 to live with her father
and stepmother in Berkeley.
The Jacuzzi family owned a machine shop where
they built airplane propellers for the Army Air Corps during
World War I. They expanded into airplane manufacturing after
the war but quit in 1921 after a fiery airplane crash killed
several people, including Mrs. Jacuzzi's brother-in-law.
Mrs. Jacuzzi and her husband moved to a ranch
near Brentwood where the brothers invented the Jacuzzi pump,
first used to pull water from wells.
Later, when a nephew contracted rheumatoid
arthritis and required water therapy, the Jacuzzi brothers modified
their pump to create the whirlpool bath that bears their name.

of Haiti,'' died Thursday of complications from pulmonary cancer.

at the jazz club Mars. He then lived in Asia and Canada before
making his home in the United States 10 years ago.

Le Figaro newspaper reported.

a soloist and guitar teacher in Paris.
In addition to his concert and teaching career,
Lagoya performed for film scores.
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mary Jane Croft Lewis,
who played a comedy sidekick in Lucille Ball's television series,
died Tuesday of natural causes, said Madelyn Pugh Davis, the
co-creator and writer of ``I Love Lucy.''
Mrs. Lewis was 83.
The actress built a career on playing TV's
friendly neighbor, starting with a role on ``The Adventures of
Ozzie and Harriet.'' She and Lyle Talbot played Clara and Joe
Randolph on the sitcom from 1956-66.
Mrs. Lewis joined ``I Love Lucy'' for the 1957
season, playing neighbor Betty Ramsey.
Mrs. Lewis began her career on radio in Cincinnati
and moved to Los Angeles in 1939. She had roles on the era's
major radio dramas, including ``Lux Radio Theatre'' and a radio
version of ``Ozzie and Harriet,'' as well as the TV and radio
versions of Eve Arden's series ``Our Miss Brooks.''
Mrs. Lewis was the widow of ``The Lucy Show''
producer, Eliott Lewis.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Screenwriter and playwright Norman Wexler,
whose work included ``Saturday Night Fever'' and ``Serpico,''
has died at 73.
Wexler died Monday after suffering a heart
attack , according to the Writers Guild of America.
The Harvard College graduate wrote movies and
plays that exposed life's grit. In 1970, he earned his first
Oscar nomination for the movie ``Joe,'' starring Susan Sarandon
and Peter Boyle, about a racist factory worker and his search
for a businessman's hippie daughter.
Wexler earned more praise for ``Serpico'' in
1973, a screenplay based on the true story of a New York cop's
battles against corruption in the police department.
His blockbuster ``Saturday Night Fever,'' nominated
for an Oscar, explored the life of a store clerk, played by John
Travolta, who submerged himself in the world of disco.
In his later career, Wexler tallied a few flops,
including ``Stayin' Alive,'' the sequel to ``Saturday Night Fever,''
and ``Raw Deal'' starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Wexler, who suffered from manic depression,
was arrested by the FBI in 1972 after he said he planned to shoot
President Nixon.
HONOLULU (AP) -- Island entertainer Lani Kai, who had a feature
role in the Elvis Presley movie ``Blue Hawaii,'' died Tuesday
in Oahu. He was 63.
Born George Clarence Dennis James Von Ruckleman
Wood III, Kai got his break in show business in the 1960s television
show ``Adventures in Paradise,'' playing a crewman aboard the

who shared the stage with jazz greats including Tommy and Jimmy
Dorsey and Eddie Lang, died Wednesday. He was 96.
Willcox grew up in Cortland, where in 1913
he took up the valve trombone and joined his father, Lynn, in
the town band.
In 1922, his Ithaca band was discovered by
jazz musician Paul Whiteman, who renamed the band the Paul Whiteman
Collegians and brought the group to New York City.
Willcox remained with the Whiteman group for
nearly three years before he was asked to replace Tommy Dorsey
in the Jean Goldkette Orchestra in Detroit.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Wallace Rosenwach, builder of rooftop water
tanks that dot Manhattan's skyline, died Aug. 23 after a brief
illness. He was 77.
Rosenwach, who inherited his grandfather's
Rosenwach Tank Company, stunned the competition by developing
a process to construct water tanks in just 10 hours, a fraction
of the time residents used to have to go without water while
their tanks were replaced.
The mini wooden silos perched atop hundreds
of New York City buildings are capped with tin hats that look
like upside-down funnels. They're a crucial part of city life,
storing at least 8,500 gallons of water and ensuring that occupants
of higher floors have proper water pressure.
Sometimes the tanks aren't just for water.
Rosenwach once built a two-story version for a customer to live
in, and used to supply them to winemakers as well.
