Subject: (exotica) The Plastic Fantastic Vinyl Factory
The active list subscriber Dom Ciccone recently offered some of us locals=20
(that=92s the New England states, United States of America, Planet Earth, fo=
r=20
you non locals) the opportunity to scrounge around the record collection of =
a=20
friend of his.
His friend, let=92s just call him =93Tony=94, owns a plastic factory. In th=
e dusty=20
attic above the back half of the factory is where Tony keeps his record=20
collection. He=92s been at it awhile, I=92d guess there were 10 to 15 thousa=
nd=20
albums there plus a mess of singles and 78=92s. Now this all could have eas=
ily=20
been another Herb story, but Tony is an orderly fellow. Tony kept the vast=20
majority of his collection in alphabetized boxes, and he even had some sorte=
d=20
by categories. Tony is planning to move, and he let Dom bring some folks by=20
before he dumps the whole mess-O-records to some dealer. =20
Dom had contacted everyone he knew in the area who might be interested, but=20
with crazy schedules and the general pain in the ass of living, only three=20
people showed up. Me, Dom and Br. Cleve. =20
Tony=92s factory was making chess pieces on Saturday when we visited him. Up =
in=20
the attic Tony set up a turn table so we could listen to anything we found. =20
I was a bit overwhelmed by all the boxes and the plastic fumes rising up fro=
m=20
down stairs, so I flitted around looked here and there. Dom uses this=20
collection as sort of a lending library, so he spent part of his time helpin=
g=20
look for things I was interested in. Br. Cleve had a Yoda like record=20
finding technique that comes with years of experience. He started at the=20
letter A and continued on to the letter Z. It seems simple, but it takes a=20
cool head and nerves of steel and Cleve demonstrated both. =20
In addition to Br. Cleve=92s amazing understanding of the alphabet, he was v=
ery=20
helpful in directing a neophyte like myself towards some groovy albums and=20
away from some evil ones. As an added bonus Br. Cleve regaled Dom and I wit=
h=20
some great impressions of Esquivel and even greater impressions of our own=20
Jane Fondle during her steamier moments on stage. As part of this latter=20
impression, Br. Cleve actually stripped down to bra and panties and writhed=20
around on top of some old boxes of records, while pleasuring himself. Tony=20
came out of his office where he=92d been pricing some of the albums we had=20
selected. When he caught sight of Cleve=92s erotic dance spectacular, Tony=20
rushed back into his office and dialed up his favorite local escort service. =20
In less then 15 minutes a micro-bus pulled up in front of the plastic factor=
y=20
and out stepped 9 hired hands (actually 18 hands on 9 beautiful females -=20
actually 5 females - 2 she-males and one pseudo-hermaphrodite). A small=20
nearby caterer arrived seconds later, packing trays of multi-colored finger=20
sandwiches and 4 cases of champagne. They all marched up into the attic=20
record loft and joined Br. Cleve in a hypnotic gyrating mass high atop the=20
mountains of records. The burly Tony swung out of his office wearing noting=20
but a leopard skin thong and a smile. Dominic was right behind him wearing =
a=20
powdered wig formed from Cool Whip and a grass skirt. The fumes from the=20
plastic works downstairs were getting very strong, and everything started to=20
take on the quality of a Jefferson Airplane light show. The sound of Dom an=
d=20
Cleve yelling =93More, more!!!=94 could be heard intermingling with Xavier=20
Cugat=92s =93Dance Party=94, Crazy Otto, and The California Poppy Pickers al=
l being=20
played on a slightly off speed turntables. =20
It was at this point that things started getting weird. I think the=20
champagne and plastic gas got the better of all of us, especially the=20
she-males. A whip topping encrusted Cleve pulled a rare Les Baxter/Hoffman=20
=9178 from a stack of filth. He handed it to one of the well oiled Ladies o=
f=20
the Evening (early afternoon), who placed it on nearby Fisher Price=20
turntable. There was a blinding emerald green flash from the rickety Fisher=20
Price and a tropical mist filled the attic. Hovering over the turntable was=20
Les Baxter draped in a diaphanous gown. He started to speak and that was th=
e=20
point at which I passed out. =20
I woke up with Dom and Cleve, in a heap out behind the plastic factory, a=20
fully dressed Tony was hosing us all down. He said the vapors from his=20
chessmen must have knocked us senseless. The escort service=92s bus was gon=
e,=20
as was the caterer. I dressed quickly paid Tony for the records I=92d found=20
and hit the road. I=92m not sure what actually happened, maybe Dom or Br.=20
Cleve have a clearer recollection.

Hey, I know this WAY off base (not to mention off topic), but I am hoping
that there are some good folks out there who may be able to help me. As you
know, we've got this company (Surreal World Products) and we have put up
our early version of our website.
How the hell do I promote it and get it listed on search engines?
I know that there are services that will charge you to do this, but I have
heard that these are not necessary as a person can do it themselves for
free.
Any help will be appreciated. Please email off list (don't want to clutter
the list more than i already have!)
Thanks....and I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion.

But the only people who are ever there are the hotel guests. The one
time I have ever seen it approaching full was when it was full of PBS
conventioners from the hotel. Now that was a scary crowd. But at least
it was a crowd.
New Year's was sad. My date and I were the only two people there and the
staff was so upset when we left to be somewhere else at midnight.

I love Gleason albums and I think Bobby Hackett was one of the
most soulful trumpet players ever. On some albums the tempo does
decend into lethargy though. My favorite Gleason albums are the
ones with "Brass" in the title. They are a little peppier. In
particular, Gleason's version of "You're Drivin Me Crazy" sticks
with me. It should have been on that Placidil album he made!

I had to review "Mambo No. 5" so here's what I know.
They pretty much added lyrics to Prado's song of the same name, as well as
cheesy synths. The singer is Ugandan-Italian and works with a team of German
producers/musicians. It's not so much the new Macarena (although it'll do
*great* at weddings) as the new Boney M. The song has a certain catchiness
(it's Prado after all) but the album as a whole is dumb dum dumb dumb.

sample of our man Perez doing his "AARGH!"

I know I'm slow on the uptake here(actually,too busy
for long posts lately, but here I go!)
My point is, WHY REMAKE THIS FILM AT ALL!? It set an
aesthetic standard for media beyond film for YEARS
after its release, in advertising, in design...you can
look at say, an old Playboy from 1970, and see an ad,
and think"Oh, that's SO Thomas Crown!" The way it was
filmed, with the multi-screens, the lighting, the
design are what made this film so compelling, not the
plot-line, which is pretty standard.
As far as "Windmills", most know I pant madly over
Michel Legrand, but the BERGMANS are hacks, I'm sorry!
The lyrics to that song are dreadful,
faux-Dylan-adults-trying-to-be-hip-but-not-even-achieving-now-sound-levels.
The only lyric I like that they wrote is that to
"What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?"
Man, I feel so much BETTER!

"Oh Susanna" can also be found on the comp CD "Golden Goofers (Your

stuff, recommended for Dr. Demento fans.

The remake most certainly did include "Windmills of Your Mind" -- in many
permutations in fact - as a flamenco number, as closing credits music (with
Sting singing, I believe), and throughout the movie in little musical
vignettes.
not commenting on the movie, the need to remake it (or lack thereof), just=

As many of us have already suspected, something strange truly is
going on in Finland (and Iceland for that matter)... All you have to
do is listen to a few things off of the Bad Vugum Label, or maybe
Paska singing "I'm Sh*t", or Laika & the Cosmonauts' Finnish brand of
surf music, or better yet, watch a film by one or both Kaurismaki
brothers to know! My theory is the proximity to Russia has injected
a whole differerent set of infuences to what would otherwise be a
quiet Scandanavian country! Second posssibility is the cold, as we in
Canada know all too well, ours being a country that's a natural stop
on the death metal tour circuit...
I'm waiting to hear this release after reading Allan's review as it
seems it may bear a strong resemblance to another project some may
know called Culturcide. This is a group that also lifts popular rock
and easy melodies but with lyrics you wouldn't want to play while the
kids are around. I think the group comes from Texas and their best
known release, "Tacky Souvenirs from Pre-Revolutionary America", was
available on a CD a few years back. The original was a private
release and not too commonly available.

Well, Dang, I tried to send this to my Yahoo! address
and it truncated the part to which I wanted to
respond, and that was of Skip Heller wanting to
"orchestrate" a proper performance of Robert Drasnin's
VOODOO! Here, here! Bring it HERE(to Boston!) I have
oft wondered why orchestras like the Boston Pops don't
have an "exotica night" and perform Les Baxter
(imagine THE PASSIONS, which was SUPPOSED to be a
SERIOUS CLASSICAL WORK anyway!)or Robert Drasnin. The
music is way meatier than a lot of the stuff the Pops
tackles on a regular basis...Maybe Jeff Phillips in SF
knows! Maybe Cleve knows...anyway, Jeff, Cleve and
SKip, if this reaches you, it's an helluva idea.

There's a mailing list at Onelist called

Barbarella-esque plastic dinette sets (my personal
favorite) to match your music should go to

Cliff Edwards was best known as the voice of Jimminy Cricket... and
that gig ruined his career. Before Pinocchio, Ukelele Ike was quite
popular. After the film was released and "When You Wish Upon A Star"
became a hit, he had a brief flurry of work, then his career took a
nose dive. He lived on skid row and became an alcoholic. In the fifties,
Walt Disney searched him out, cleaned him up and gave him a lot of work
on the Mickey Mouse club and the educational shorts you might have
seen in school as a kid. ("I'm No Fool" and "You and Your Five
Senses"). Then, true to form, Walt dumped him again and Cliff hit the
skids again. Pretty sad story.
In any case, his best CD is called "Singing in the Rain". (Audiophile
ACD-17). It's a bunch of radio transcriptions from the early 40s. The
performances are spirited and the sound quality is better than some of
the other CDs I've heard. Edwards was a childhood chum of Bing Crosby.
Supposedly they sang a lot together to the radio in their early days.
You can see Cliff Edwards in the flesh in a Vitaphone short called
"My Little Buckaroo" which was released on a laserdisc set. He sings
the title song with loving, heartfelt feeling with his face about two
inches away from a big fat sleeping slug of a ranch hand. Really sick!
>One guy, who looks popular on his many records, wasn't such a great
>success with me: Tex Williams
Tex is great. He was the singer in Spade Cooley's band until Spade,
in a drunken rage, fired him for having a "big head". Apparently
Tex had been passing out 8 by 10 glossies of himself to the ladies
in the crowd. There is a good Tex Williams and his Western Caravan
collection on the Capitol Vintage Collections series, and his vocals
are all over the Spade Cooley CD called "Spadella", but the best
Tex Williams CD I've heard is a live broadcast from Los Angeles in
the late forties called "Tex Williams on the Air 1947-1949" (Country
Roots RFD CD 17).
>America wouldn't be America without performers like the Louvin
>Brothers.
Supposedly, the Louvins were a real "Cain and Abel" pair. Charley
was a quiet religious man, and Ira was an abusive alcholic boor.
Even his close friends described him as a "rattlesnake". The
Louvin Brothers were Elvis's mother's favorite musicians.
Elvis made them his opening act in the fifties. After belting
out Hound Dog and the rest of his rock n roll numbers for the
crowd, Elvis would go backstage and jam with the Louvins on
the gospel songs of his childhood. Ira Louvin was drunk one
night and said to Elvis, "You should play these gospel tunes
all the time... Give up that crappy nigger music". Elvis
walked out of the room without a word, and the next day the
Louvin's got the pink slip.
The Louvin Brothers are great because of their simple,
ignorant sincerity. You can tell they are singing songs that
they really feel. The pain is palpable. It's kind of like
a dog that has a broken leg and howls with pain without
really understanding what is happening to him. If you can
find "Tragic Songs of Life" on vinyl, pick it up. It's their
best album. Unfortunately, the CD reissues of it dull the
sharpness of the Louvin's sound to make it "more paletable
for modern ears". It takes a lot of the edge off the music
in the process.
>On their album "Satan Is Real", that shows a cute devil in
>the back, Ira and Charlie "pour out their beliefs and
>convictions born of a deep-seated religious upbringing.
The story goes that the brothers built that devil in their
back yard, then set fire to it and jumped in the flames to
have the picture shot. It is one of the best album covers
ever. The album is great too.
See ya

Is there something "sadder" than sad? If this isn't the definition I
don't know what is.
I've obtained the phone number for the Pres. of the Trader Vic's

If any of you have questions you'd like answered (both positive and
negative ones, I hope), please send em to me at kevin@kevdo.com.

the Trader Vic's home site make it clear that the resturants "are not family

the home site and the heirs run the product selling / distribution end.
