sad but true... another one bites the lava. first the tiki palaces, now
the dancing maiden. as the bumper sticker o'er reads, "no Hawaiians, no
aloha." like the product disclaimer says, "no aloha may cause potential
tiki loss." on a sunnier note, Don Tiki recently played a fundraiser for
the contemporary art museum here at the swank "A Pacific Cafe." Martin
Denny was invited as a guest of honor and wound up jamming with the band
on 5 tunes including "Quiet Village", "Exotica", "Taste of Honey"
"Corcovado" and "Cobra." He was AmaZingZing!!! Our own dancer Pamtiki
bamboozled the men in the audience with her sultry forbidden hula.
Martin just got back from Seattle where he was flown in for the premiere
of "Breakfast of Champions"... new major film from Vonnegut book that
features his music prominently throughout. He reports that stars Willis
and Nolte treated him like royalty... as well they should!
let your tiki flag fly,

Awww, it could happen! My first name is Celtic (Brian), my middle name is
French (Douglas) and my last name is Greek (Phillips). I am partially West
Indian and had my father been into the dual citizenship (UK and Jamaican)
thing I might have ended up with a name like Giles, such as Beville (a
fellow I met in Los Angeles) or a friend of the family, the fabulously named
Llewelyn Herod!
Besides, haven't you ever heard of the famous trumpet player Giles Davis,
especially his collaborations with Mil Evans?

You know, most of us have resigned ourselves to the fact that we can't live in
paradise, and now you add more fuel to that fire...? Please tell me this stuff
has been videotaped or something. (hey, are the vids of ANY Denny
performances?) Man, I am so very, very jealous... (and, a great selection of
songs, too!) first Drasnin and now this...

Ach! Now I'm jealous I've never seen Don Tiki too! Jeeze, way to ruin a guy's

Well, this certainly softened the blow! I was just thinking it would be cool to
hear Denny music in a movie! Maybe Denny will be featured on the soundtrack.
Hey, maybe Quiet Village will celebrate it's 40th anniversary of being a hit
(this summer folks!) by being a hit again!
Hey, a guy can dream can't he?

Spotted Lord Sitar's 11 track CD full of Beatles and Who songs in the
Virgin Megastore import section, but passed on it since i'm waiting on
the Vampyros Lesbos DVD due out next week. (Am also trying to figure out
what the 2 disc compilation "Suck It and See" is all about - it does
have a Fantastic Plastic Machine song on it - just more garden variety
technolectronica or something special?)
BTW, considering the threads about EZ vocals like Free Design et al,
give another listen to the Fleetwoods. There is a 28 track EMI
compilation for $9.99 at CDNow ($10-off coupon special just expired)
which contains all the hits plus some acapella stuff, especially a
hauntingly lovely "Unchained Melody." Very little lame filler, and
better than the Rhino comp of a few years back despite the omission of
"Truly Do." Excellent liner notes (Roy Lanham & Si Zentner played on
Mister Blue) and a story that the title of "Come Softly to Me" was
originally "Come Softly" but the producer changed it - well, it WAS
1959. In retrospect a fine body of work, and IMHO these kids seem to
have been taken for granted here as EZ pioneers in the heyday of rock.
Sweet, simple, charming and innocent, except maybe "Lovers By
Night,Strangers By Day." Great nighttime music.

It confirms that Ennio Morricone's original soundtrack was lost in a garage

Subject: (exotica) Don Fagen
Just pondering the exotica/lounge influences on Donald Fagen's stuff,
particularly "the Nightfly" album. Doesn't walk between the Raindrops sound
like 80s-hipped out lounge? Or The Goodbye Look like some vibe intro from
lighter exoticish pseudotaboo?
Just a thought, mabye a thread.

And there is some dude that keeps listing Yma Sumac "Glamor Photographs" on
ebay and sometimes they are (I think) signed.

What is also funny is that he starts bidding a $ 10.00 and usually list
Photos 1 thru 5. The current set is all bid on by one person.
Just another curiosity! That Yma must be hanging out at the mall and keeping
Glamor Shots in business.
I wonder if they are using Kodak film?

>My love and respect for Les Baxter are well documented, so I don't feel to
badly in saying this poor soul is being ripped off, especially considering
the SHAPE the record is in! Yes, I think SPACE ESCAPADE is nice space-age
pop. I only say "nice", as it's nothing dazzling. And anybody who buys it
thinking its "space" music along the lines of Frank Comstock or Russ Garcia
will cry on his or her credit card bill. I also saw that BEDAZZLED was
going for a cool $200, at last check. Kids! Do what I did until the thing
is released on CD or CDr(hint, hint!)...dub the songs off the viddy!
Thriftly,

high amount!

they'll use the Martin Denny music in the scenes where the car-dealership

own. But the use of Martin Denny makes one hopeful!

You bet! I got a complete album (and that is 4 records - eight sides!!!) of
Yma Sumac's Xtabay on 78 about 2 weeks ago. Price? Nine bucks plus book
rate shipping of $ 2.00. The cover, wax, etc. all in beautiful condition.
What a blast!
On the other hand -- cocktail shakers. Through the roof. One's I paid 20
bucks for 3 years ago now go for over a hundred. A few (Revere Wear's
Manhattans and Zephyrs which I got for $ 80 to $ 90 bucks a few years back
now reach from $ 600 to $ 1000. That's right.
My problem with this? I am not a collector. Collectors will often sell
their wears. I am an accumulator -- we never sell nuthin'. Thus no profit
to be had. Oh well.

>>>Geez, my work-day is so slow I'm goin' thru old digests...No, Pea, I
don't have one, but I almost bid on Pete Rugolo's BEHIND BRIGETTE

when you fold out the box of the tape, in place of the "behind" part is
instead a lovely b&w pic of her. Still, getting the __behind__ part is
all of the fun(it's a great rekkid, too, have it on tape.)

Never heard of it but it looked like the kind of thing we'd all like to see

Coincidentally, it just ran on AMC. I was slightly disappointed... it's in
that less compelling zone between the really good and the cheap 'n' sleazy
poles. It had that made-for-tv movie feel. Even had Tony Franciosa as the
male lead, y'know? But worth a viewing, with some of that fun quirkiness
that 60s movies have, like Clive Revill's performance as a twistedly
eccentric jewel thief. Raquel is a trooper as always. She plays a dental
hygienist (sic?)/ part-time skydiver touring Europe with her skydiving
buddies. But she's quickly sidetracked into a spy/jewel theft conspiracy. A
cheery little action flick that never gets into anything that would raise
the budget too much (a yacht gets all smoky but never actually explodes).
The music (by John Dankworth) had some nice moments, I think. I seem to
recall thinking, "yeah, the gang on the list would like this bit." But to
be honest, I can't recall a lick of it now.
I have been meaning to mention "Dr. Goldfoot & The Bikini Machine", which
ran on AMC this past weekend. Score by Les Baxter, and a real fun one, I
thought (with Les, there's always more (sorry)). I don't know if he wrote
the music for the title song (sung by The Supremes), but he employs a lot
of variations on its main riff in the score. Also has a lot of fun "busy"
music, sort of like cartoon music, sort of like "Busy Port". Some nifty
horror and action cues too. I swear, Francis Vincent Zappa must have
listened to a good helping of Les in his youth. Juxtapose "Jungle
Riverboat" and "Uncle Meat: Main Title Theme" sometime.
I don't know if there was a soundtrack album released for "Dr. Goldfoot",
but like Jane F, I'm happy enough to hear it via the video.
